Anti shoplifting efforts pay back the bottom line

Anti shoplifting efforts can be a profit booster from many angles. However, in my opinion, no efforts are easier to achieve than that of a checkpoint security system.

Checkpoint security tags … your solution to Organized Retail Crime.

One of the most common methods to stop shoplifting is to use some type of RF label. A RF label is a radio frequency label (or RF security tags as it is more commonly known) and is applied to merchandise in order to help stop shoplifting. The RF security labels prevent shoplifting is that when the merchandise with the RF label goes through the door without first going through the register then an alarm is generated which will draw your employees attention to the theft in progress.

Thieves hate this. Shoplifters want to do their evil deeds undetected since no one really wants to go to jail. Checkpoint security tags are some of the best that I have used. They are durable and hard to remove so groups who steal for profit (i.e. Organized Retail Crime (ORC) rings) don’t want to waste their time trying to remove the tags and they definitely don’t want the recognition they would receive from standing in the door with an alarm going off. The result … they go bother someone else and leave your merchandise alone.

A few things to consider when using Checkpoint labels to make them most effective. 1) Use the right RF security tags for the right product. You will want hard tags for clothes, handbags, shoes, etc. Make sure you get the lanyards to go with the hard tags for the handbags and shoes as you don’t want to damage the product. Use soft tags for package items. 2) Pick the right items to place RF labels on. You don’t want to tag everything as it is too expensive. Pick the high dollar / high theft items to tag. There is no exact science to stop shoplifting so adjust as necessary to find the right solution for your location.

Retail theft prevention … fundamental or fantasy???

So everyone knows about Checkpoint security tags on merchandise, right? There are several providers. One that happens to be pretty good is made by Checkpoint security system. I’ve had the opportunity to use their product and find it to be quality product at a good price.

But enough of that. Do anti shoplifting devices work? That’s the real question. I can say without a doubt, “YES”! Here’s an example. A rookie thief wants to get product without attention. He, like us, is familiar with the “beep, beep, beep” from the Checkpoint security system at the doors and knows that will draw attention. When he/she see’s that Checkpoint security tags on product, then he/she is likely to head to your competitor to do the shoplifting there. That is the key. We say retail theft prevention too casually sometimes, but we often forget the “prevention” part.

There are other options as well. Checkpoint systems offers camera systems too. Cameras are great to use to record doors, registers and high theft areas of the store. Just having them will cause potential shoplifters to think twice about stealing and it helps make your case in court when someone is dumb enough to still try. You can always use smoke domes or “dummy domes” if you can’t afford the full Checkpoint systems camera system. It still gives the illusion that you have a camera over certain “high theft” product and will deter the thieves.

Shoplifting is unfortunately a part of everyday retail. The only way to truly employ retail theft prevention is to utilize the anti shoplifting devices that are available today. Crime evolves and you have to keep up so it won’t shut you down.

Labels or Tags? You Decide (cont.)

The benefits of using RF security labels are that they are easy to use, cost effective and with a plethora of different shapes and sizes, are ideal for many different applications. With the release of Checkpoint’s new EP (enhanced performance) RF label, you are able to receive the same detection capabilities that you would have gotten with a much larger tag in the past. Although the EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance) system is the same, changes in the design of the RF labels have improved the effectiveness of the detection. You can apply these Checkpoint labels to almost any item that you would like to keep from leaving the location without your knowledge. Also, these RF labels will not have to be removed at the time of purchase. When the item is scanned at the point of sale the RF security labels are automatically deactivated, causing a seamless transaction and not adding any time to the routine of your cashier.

There are a few things to remember when applying Checkpoint labels. They are not as durable as RF security tags because they are in sticker form and are not in a hard case. The RF label is also more prone to being tampered with. Also, for the RF labels to be most effective it needs to be placed on a flat surface. If you place the sticker label on a significantly curved surface it can cause the tag to not be detected properly from the EAS system.

Labels or Tags? You Decide

Need help deciding which Checkpoint Labels you should use to help stop shoplifting? Here are a few things to think about from a Checkpoint security system certified technician’s point of view. The first decision you will need to make is whether you need reusable RF security tags or one time use RF security labels.

Checkpoint security tags have greater detection from a further distance than an RF label. This does not mean that you must have RF security tags for your system to work properly. A Checkpoint system is configured and tuned to detect RF labels from antenna to antenna without losing detection. One of the primary reasons for having Checkpoint security tags is that they are a visual deterrent. When a customer is browsing the merchandise, whether it is a pair of jeans or a nice purse, they will see the tag and know that if they try to steal the item an alarm will sound. Having RF security tags alone will help to stop shoplifting. The other benefits of using these tags are that they are more durable than RF security labels and are reusable.

The downside of using Checkpoint security tags is the same as one of the benefits they are easy to see. While it will help to stop shoplifting, it could also not be as aesthetically pleasing as some companies would prefer. There are also some products that it is not logical or cost effective to use RF security tags on. These items would be better suited for a RF label.

Beep, Beep, Beep. Retail theft prevention sounds good to me.

Ever been in a store and heard the annoying beep, beep, beep at the doors? I bet no one even looked up did they? Anti shoplifting systems are only as good as the people who use them. So what are anti shoplifting systems? These are systems designed to assist in retail theft prevention.
