When they don’t work alone

I am seeing more and more cases where my internal (employee) theft cases revolve around an employee and someone from the outside. That is just fine by me. When you have a single associate stealing, it can be problematic trying to find out how and where they are stealing.

When an employee is working with someone, I see more activity around the registers. It may sound strange, but it works out better for me in the long run.

Most of the time when an employee passes merchandise off to a buddy or relative, they move the product past the checkouts. It is to give the appearance that the items are being paid for. The other reason is that is where the detachers are to get rid of any checkpoint labels or checkpoint security tags that are present.

For a lot of retailers, the cash wraps are where the bulk of cameras are. So when an employee is at the register deactivating RF labels, we can see what is going on, as well as recording it for further evidence.

By having Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint security tags on our product, it slows down the theft giving us a better chance at detecting the pass off, and accurately case building. We can recover more merchandise and restitution in the end, all thanks to the RF labels.

Which One Will You Pick?

I have had many opportunities over the years to stop shoplifting, or more accurately, to stop shoplifters in my stores. One of the easiest ways is to incorporate the use of Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint security tags into our day-to-day operations.

Checkpoint security tags and Checkpoint labels are tested for quality and reliability. Checkpoint prides themselves at being at the top of the anti theft device game. They have blazed the trail to provide effective solutions to stop shoplifting.

Checkpoint continues to innovate product specific solutions to assist in all of your shrink reduction needs. They have gone beyond the simple hard tags and now offer box locks, wraps, customizable adhesive labels and jewelry solutions, just to name a few.

Having more solutions makes it easier for me to do my job and reduce shrink in my stores. I no longer have to spend my time reinventing the wheel just to make something work. I can just browse the list of Checkpoint solutions to see what will work in my situation.

I find that I spend less time looking at what went wrong, because I was using the wrong product. Now I spend my time evaluating what went right and how can I produce those same results with my next problem area.

Don’t Be Fooled By a Knock- Off

If you have ever tried or switched from a name brand item to a generic or store brand item, you know that not all products are equivalent to each other. Some things turn out ok. There is not a glaring difference between the two. Sometimes, though, the difference between a name brand and a cheap knock off is alarming.

When you are trying to stop shoplifting from occurring in your stores, you need to be wary of what off brands you use. You are libel to end up with an inferior foreign made item that does not stand up to the extreme quality controls of a Checkpoint label or a Checkpoint security tag.

Not all RF labels and RF security tags are equal. Checkpoint has developed and adheres to strict quality controls; testing each and every RF security tag and RF label they make.

Checkpoint believes in their quality and stands behind their name. They want you to believe in them too. This is one time where it is worth it to go with a trusted name brand. Your merchandise and your inventories are depending on it. Don’t be fooled by a knock off. Go with Checkpoint.

How Do They Do It?

A rather young, new employee asked me the other day how Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint security tags stop shoplifting. They didn’t really believe that a plastic tag or a little sticky label could really be an effective method to stop shoplifting. You could see the doubt brimming in their eyes.

I told them it was a combination of several different facets all working together that created an efficient shortage reduction program. The first step was utilizing the RF labels and RF security tags.

You see, the RF security tags and labels are a visual cue for potential thieves. They say that stealing any of the tagged items are going to be more difficult to get out the door without raising suspicion or notice.

For those shoplifters that do try to beat the system, it will take them longer to either try (usually unsuccessfully) to defeat the tags, or they will set the alarm off as they go out the door.

If they are noticed inside the store, they will generally be apprehended. Those that set the alarm off run the risk of having a license plate on their get away vehicle documented. Many a shoplifter has been apprehended after the fact by having a lead on the car’s make, color and plates.

All in all, the word spreads quickly that this store takes shortages and theft seriously; best to move on to the next store and leave this one alone.

Why The EAS System IS So Effective

Sometimes we just take things for granted. We know that certain things work and certain things don’t. How often do we ever stop and think about why something works better than something else. Take EAS systems like Checkpoint security tags and Checkpoint labels as an effective means to stop shoplifting.

Shoplifters ultimately rely on the need to remain inconspicuous and anonymous. A shoplifter’s greatest trait is to be able to dash into a store, under the radar, and get out before anyone notices they are there. When you say time is of the essence, no one can relate more than a shoplifter.

When you add another variable into the equation, such as Checkpoint security tags and Checkpoint labels, that precious time needed to make a successful theft starts to dwindle. If a shoplifter is now faced with the task of unauthorized removal of the tags and labels, they run the risk of being detected.

Since there is no easy, quick way to remove the tags without the proper deactivators or detachers, the addition of tags and labels are essential to being able to stop shoplifting. It is far better to rob a thief of time, than for a thief to rob you of your inventory.

Who Do You Trust With Your Assets

Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint security tags are amongst the best in the business. Sure, you can go out just about anywhere and get some inexpensive knock offs, but why would you?

When you are making an investment to stop shoplifting losses in your store, trust only the best name in the business.  Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint security tags are reliable. They are individually tested to ensure consistent results. They make a point to not having any duds sent out with their name on it.

Often other RF labels and RF security tags are foreign imports that are quickly and cheaply made. There generally aren’t the same quality control standards. You can have multiple RF labels on a roll that do not work. Why pay for a product that is only marginally good? Expect the best for your merchandise.

If you are taking the time and effort to truly invest in a shrink reduction plan, do it right the first time. Make no mistakes in which you will trust with your most precious assets: your merchandise, your customers, and your store. You will be happier from the start. Quality products that are done right each and every time absolutely guaranteed.

Sleek and Discreet

After spending years in Loss Prevention, I understand the need for discretion and stealth very well. With out either of these traits, I would not have gotten very far in my career. It is rather hard to stop shoplifting from occurring in your stores if you are loud and boisterous.

I remember a story my old mentor told me. He had been standing in a checkout line behind one of his shoplifters. This wasn’t just any old shoplifter either. He had been hitting the stores for months and my mentor finally had enough to make an apprehension.

They had stuffed a box with merchandise and were paying for only the box, not the contents. After the transaction finished, my mentor could make the apprehension as they left the store.

Well, sure enough, another associate was walking by and shouted “Hey! Have you caught any shoplifters today?” My mentor’s cover was gone and the shoplifter left without any product. The case had been blown. While the shoplifter never came back to the store, any chance of recovering the previously stolen product, or securing restitution was completely destroyed.

Checkpoint security tags and Checkpoint labels are designed with the same thought in mind. They should be effective above all else, but also sleek, discreet and stealth whenever they are needed to stop shoplifting. It is much more wise to put your trust in Checkpoint security tags and Checkpoint labels to get the job done.

On The Inside

When I was in my teenage years, it seems like I had plenty of disposable income. It was never a stretch to go out and buy some new little trinket, or a new CD. As the years went by, my discretionary funds if you will, seemed to give way to new expenses like a car payment, mortgage, etc. My new CD purchases have been few and far between.

The other day, I did go out and buy a new CD. It had been a while, and quite frankly I was shocked to see that stores still carried CDs. After I got home with my new purchase, I eagerly ripped into the packaging. Ten minutes later I finally got the plastic wrap off. Inside the cover, on the insert, was a little RF security label.

It seemed like a rather unfortunate place to put an RF label since the insert can easily be removed. To stop shoplifting, using an RF security label is an important step. When I think of how long it took me to actually get into my CD, I think it is a very good hiding spot for the RF label. I just really wish they had put it on the inside of the case, instead of ruining my insert.

Some thieves are just brazen

So you think that just because you have every piece of inventory tagged with RF labels or Checkpoint security tags that you are absolutely protected from shoplifters?  I hate to be the bearer of bad news but if some scumbag professional thief wants to steal from you, they will, and they might not even try to conceal their efforts.

As an example, on the second floor of my store there is only one entrance/exit, not including access points from elevators or escalators.  Along the walls of said entrance are walls of product, on one side clearance items and the other side high-end children’s clothing.  For two weekends in a row, the staff working that floor discovered a particular section of the high-end product suddenly emptied out of everything.  This prompted us to mandate that any product being placed in that section be affixed with a Checkpoint security tag, regardless of whether it was within guidelines.  The next weekend a man was spotted by a store employee coming into the store with a large shopping bag, going directly to that previously hit corner, and loading the bag with everything he could get his hands on.  In less than twenty seconds he had cleaned out the section and made for the door when the employee tried to call out to him, which prompted him to run.

We still haven’t caught him on camera and there is literally only twenty feet separating his target section with the doorway.  It has required us to think outside the box.  Applying RF labels or security tags only helps when the shoplifters are worried about getting noticed.  This particular guy doesn’t seem to care.

Ready for Spring

I was looking out my back door yesterday and I saw the first robin of the season. I couldn’t believe it. The winter months have just flown by and now we are already seeing the signs of spring.

After the robin, I noticed the trees are budding out and the grass is starting to return to its normal shade of green. Inside the stores, you can see a shift. Bright spring colors are on display, a long with bright spring merchandise. New shoes, new clothes and definitely new bags and purses.

In the winter we see a lot of tiny little bags and clutches. The spring brings out huge beach bags and carry alls. On more than one occasion I have apprehended a suspect that has stuffed one of these huge bags full of merchandise. In an effort to stop shoplifting using our merchandise as a tool, we started to use Checkpoint security tags.

We are now attaching Checkpoint security tags to all of our purses and handbags. We are putting the pins right into the eye of the zipper pull. So far it seems to be working. Without a means to stuff the product, we are eliminating one more way to attempt shoplifting. It also provides a visual cue that more merchandise in the store is tagged and we are watching our shrink.
