Securing your profits with Alpha Security

Alpha security has been a leader in product security devices for many years. Only recently, was I able to use these devices to help a retailer protect their profits.

A growing chain of supermarkets was experiencing a high volume of loss in their liquor department. They looked at shipments from vendors and the receiving process to help understand where these losses were happening and how. Knowing loss prevention and the trends showing customer theft activity pertaining to liquor, I recommended Alpha Security products. More specifically, I asked them give EASy bottle locks a try. A former partner of mine works for a larger chain of drug stores and had great success with EASy bottle locks, in fact he recommends any retailer, large or small, selling liquor to use these EASy bottle locks if product security is a must.

Taking my recommendations, this chain ordered enough bottle locks to cover the entire liquor department in 10 stores. Almost overnight, stores noticed a dramatic difference in the liquor departments. No more big holes on the display shelves, no more opened containers and no more wondering. Bottle locks were working, and this was only the beginning. My team and I continued to monitor the liquor bottle security program in each of the stores. The biggest challenge we faced in each store, was not whether or not bottle locks from Alpha security worked, it was ensuring the store had enough product to fill the shelves. Funny how selling works, you actually must have product in the stores to make sales. And boy were sales made. Adding this liquor bottle security program, the company saw a 30% increase in comparative liquor sales and look forward to their future growth and the use of bottle locks.

Retail security doesn’t have to cost and arm and a leg…

The fact is retail security is now more cost effective than ever.  Think about this.  When do you every buy name brand charges or accessories for your phone or other electronic devices anymore?  The answer for most is never.  You can go online and find hundreds of options that work just as well for much less than the OEM prices.  The same principle applies to retail security items like anti-theft devices.

Can you spend a lot of money on name brand EAS tags and labels?  Of course.  Is it always necessary?  Not really.  As stated there are options now for cheap tags and cheap labels that still get the job done.  As long as a product is quality and works then the name really doesn’t matter.  I guarantee shoplifters don’t stop to check the brand name on an anti-shoplifting tag.  All they care about is discovering if an item is protected or not.  If it has anti-theft devices (even cheap tags and cheap labels) then they are much more likely to leave the product alone and steal elsewhere. Don’t get caught unprotected because you can’t afford the name brand retail security items.  Find a less expensive alternative and take the first step in fighting back against retail crime.

Can You Out Run Your Shrink?

No matter how hard you try, I’ll bet you just can’t out run your shrink losses. Trust me, I have seen many stores try. They think that as long as they keep exceeding their sales budgets, retail security can take a back burner.

The days of stellar positive comps are over. Expenses are being cut left and right to make up for the difference in profits. Retail security is critical to bottom line profit increases. At some point, you can only cut out so much. So where do you turn?

Anti theft devices are designed to resolve your shrink losses. If you use cheap tags and cheap labels for your go to anti theft devices, you can avoid costly expenses to reduce your shrink.

Not just for anti shoplifting, these tags and labels will also keep your employees in check. Most companies report that around 40% of shrink is incurred by store employees. Why wouldn’t you want to make the right cost effective decision?

Don’t keep cutting, and definitely don’t try to keep running. Put the focus back on retail security in your store.

Not Just About the EAS Tag

I used to think that all there was to retail theft prevention was anti shoplifting devices like Checkpoint security tags. Boy was I wrong. Checkpoint security tags are just the tip of the iceberg. While they are a very important component to retail theft prevention, there is so much more out there when it comes to anti shoplifting technology and tools.

When I first started in Loss Prevention I had a general understanding that the little hard plastic tags (EAS Tags) would set off an alarm if someone were trying to steal. I also knew that the tags were filled with ink that would spray everywhere if someone attempted to tear the tags off.

Little did I know that there are so many other components to a Checkpoint security system. One other piece to the puzzle are things like the camera system. The camera system or Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) consists of all of the stationary cameras as well as the Pan/ Tilt/ Zooms (PTZ).

The Checkpoint security system might also include things like public view monitors (PVM). This is a monitor stationed in a high shrink area that allows your customers (and thieves) to see exactly what you are seeing in the camera room. All of that is in addition to any recording devices and monitors in the camera room as well.

Having a comprehensive shrink reduction plan involving EAS tags is really only the beginning. Your own level of retail theft prevention is really only limited by your imagination.

By Any Other Name

We all know that William Shakespeare said that a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet.  Clearly Mr. Shakespeare didn’t work for a background check company. Any reputable background checks expert will tell you that when it comes to background checks and pre employment screening, not everyone with different names are roses.

I worked a rather large internal case a few years back. We flew in our corporate Loss Prevention Managers to help us out. One of the first things they did was to run a name and address verification on this employee. It was a similar protocol to what they had done when they had previously worked for a background check company.

The amount of information they could pull was staggering. It listed every place this employee had lived for the last ten years, including other occupants listed at the same address. To our surprise, this employee had been living with another one of our employees. Not only was this a clear policy violation, but it also opened up a whole new door to the investigation.

These guys really were background check experts in my book. The background check they did gave us a new employee to investigate that we may not have caught otherwise. Based on this new information, we were able to investigate and resolve close to $100,000 in losses over the previous five years they had been employed at our company. Had we done this sort of pre employment screening to begin with, the employee would not have been hired to begin with.

New business owner learns the importance of Bottle locks

Bottle locks where an item that I hardly used in my career but knew from speaking and reading about anti devices that they work well and are crucial to having proper Bottle security. Which is how I address the issue when a friend of mine asks my opinion on Liquor bottle security due to the fact that he was buying a sports bar? According to him the previous owner stated that he lost a lot of merchandise during the off hours.

So I explained to him what a bottle lock can do to protect his stock as well as other merchandise from Alpha security such as Easy Bottle lock by using these bottle locks he can protect his merchandise during the off hours. He can place Easy bottle locks when the bar closes and it can prevent anyone from drinking from the stock.

Alpha security can provide all the needed Liquor bottle security that can help protect his profits. Any business whether it’s a bar, night club or even a parent that wants to protect their liquor from being used without permission a bottle lock is a solution to the problem.

What is an EAS Tag?

While most everyone in the United States has seen an EAS tag, not everyone really knows what they are. Clothing security tags, specifically Checkpoint tags are two hard pieces of plastic. One side has a steel pin attached. The other side has a tiny hole to receive the pin as it pierces through the material of a garment.

Once clamped together, the checkpoint tags are virtually indestructible. They require the use of a detacher to remove them. I have seen shoplifters try to pry them off, cut them off, and even burn the plastic off. Very little have succeeded. The ones that did ended up destroying the clothing they were trying to steal, or they busted the ink inside.

Clothing security tags that are referred to as ink tags are a hard EAS tag that has two ampoules of dye in one of the sides. There is generally a blue dye and a glow in the dark dye that stain whatever the inks come in contact with.

EAS refers to electronic article surveillance. In basic terms, the security tags on clothes have an RF transmitter inside. When it crosses the path of a clothing alarm (the big towers flanking the doors of a retailer) an audible alarm goes off.

Security tags on clothes, or EAS tags are available and used in the majority of large chain stores. It is equally beneficial for small boutiques and other small box stores to utilize the EAS tags in their clothing security.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase a clothing alarm or clothing security tags and an Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system.

The low impact way to prevent shoplifting

Maybe you have a smaller store, or perhaps just don’t have a huge budget for retail anti theft devices.  If such is the case there is a simple method to scare off a large portion of your potential ‘opportunist’ shoplifters; deception.

All it takes it creating the illusion you have a bigger network of retail anti theft devices than what you actually possess.  As I have said before, the most common way to prevent shoplifting is to use your tools as a deterrent first and foremost and focus your hands-on work for the tried and true criminals.

Starting with the basics you should at the very least install Nano Gates at your entry points.  That right there generates the idea in the heads of those entering your store that you possess the items that work in concert with the Nano Gates.  Then, at your discretion (and within your plans/budget), you install retail anti theft devices on very visible and/or high value merchandise.  Be they Spider Wraps or Jewel Loks just make sure everyone sees that they are there.

Finally, you want to remove as many blind spots in your store as possible, and maybe even put up a few false cameras.  While YOU will know that they are not real, the vast majority of potential shoplifters won’t and will avoid trying to pull anything while they suspect they are being watched.

It may not seem like a great way to spend your loss prevention budget, but as I said before, with just a few Nano Gates and the overall illusion that you are more secure than you actually are, you can trick thieves into leaving you alone before they even attempt anything.

A Dime A Dozen

In the land of retail security, anti theft devices are a dime a dozen, sometimes literally. That doesn’t mean that every cheap label and every cheap tag is made up to the same standards.

When it comes to anti shoplifting devices and tactics, the implementation of an EAS system when paired with EAS labels and tags can potentially decrease shrink losses tenfold. That is one of the main reasons why it is so common for retailers to use EAS systems. It also makes sense that every company out there is going to try and cash in on the sale of cheap labels and cheap tags.

Not every EAS devices is created equal. Some labels are refurbished and do not have a high accuracy rate. Sometimes the labels may actually reactivate themselves if they sit too long, causing customer service issues. How much are you willing to pay for accurate results?

Just because you can make and sell inexpensive products, doesn’t really mean you should. Go to a reliable source and make your retail security investment efficient and effective.

On The Inside

When I was in my teenage years, it seems like I had plenty of disposable income. It was never a stretch to go out and buy some new little trinket, or a new CD. As the years went by, my discretionary funds if you will, seemed to give way to new expenses like a car payment, mortgage, etc. My new CD purchases have been few and far between.

The other day, I did go out and buy a new CD. It had been a while, and quite frankly I was shocked to see that stores still carried CDs. After I got home with my new purchase, I eagerly ripped into the packaging. Ten minutes later I finally got the plastic wrap off. Inside the cover, on the insert, was a little RF security label.

It seemed like a rather unfortunate place to put an RF label since the insert can easily be removed. To stop shoplifting, using an RF security label is an important step. When I think of how long it took me to actually get into my CD, I think it is a very good hiding spot for the RF label. I just really wish they had put it on the inside of the case, instead of ruining my insert.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase Checkpoint labels, Checkpoint security tags, and other RF labels that can help you stop shoplifting with your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system in your business.
