Don’t get lucky, get prepared

New and Improved

I went into my local grocery store tonight and was strangely surprised. I had just been in there a few days ago, but it seems like in that short span of time, they had managed to revamp almost the entire store.

One of the first things I noticed was there new hard liquor corral. I can only imagine what their losses have been for them to redo the store with this new set up in mind. It seems like they are trying to take the first steps toward liquor bottle security.

In the past, they had no bottle security to speak of. Bottles were just left on the shelves without any additional care or bottle security. They were ripe for the picking just the same as any other food product they were selling.

Now, it seems, liquor bottle security is moving closer to the forefront of their minds, and I do mean this literally. Now located at the very front of the store, you see a big walled in area filled with all of the hard liquor and spirits. There is also a sign stating no carts are allowed, and no one under the age of 21 can come in.

I still didn’t see any bottle locks, but I guess it is a step for them in the right direction.

Retail theft prevention tips that you should already know…

In the world of retail theft prevention there are quite a few concepts that are treated as ‘common knowledge’ to those of us in the business.  Concepts such as ‘a camera system is no good if nobody is using it’ or ‘what’s the point in have security tags if you don’t attach them to products’.  In truth it should be common knowledge (or more accurately common sense) to anyone in the retail game but there are some concepts that may not be so plain to see.

A good example would be retail theft prevention using your store’s layout.  Even if you have the top tier Checkpoint security system installed and enough Checkpoint security tags to tag one hundred percent of your store’s merchandise that means nothing to ‘grab and dash’ style shoplifters.  They don’t care if the products are tagged six ways from Sunday.  They don’t care if they set off every alarm on your Checkpoint security system.  All they care about is grabbing the priciest products within twenty feet of your store entrance and getting out as fast as possible.

In truth there is only one real way to dissuade such a criminal, apart from hiring a door guard for every minute your store is open.  What you can do is unsure that anything in your store of any significant value (which is, of course, based on your profit margin and discretion) is placed as far towards the rear of the store as possible.  The more space between that product and your front door means the more time the shoplifter has to worry about being seen on camera, or by you which means an increased likelihood in them being identified.

Why perform background checks?

On the road

I just came back from a great weekend with my family. We took a road trip up north to see one of the national museums that we had been dying to go see. It was well worth the trip, I might add. Even my toddler loved it.

After we had walked all seven floors of the museum, we decided to take a quick swing through the gift shop on our way out. They had a large amount of clothing for sale, but none of it seemed to have any clothing security tags.

I thought that was pretty strange for a tourist attraction to not have any visible clothing security. After I took a closer look, I could tell that they didn’t use any clothing security tags. They did have clothing security in the form of soft labels.

These labels were imbedded into the price tags of the clothes. It was a pretty smart move, I thought. There was still a form of protection in place, but it wasn’t overtly publicized.

No doubt they have had their share of shoplifters, but the amount of false activations from their clothing alarm was greatly reduced. No one ever forgot to remove a hard tag. The soft tags were disarmed as soon as they were placed on the counters at the wrap stand.

In a museum, the last thing you want is to have a clothing alarm going off every few minutes. This individual take on clothing security was very well thought out to suit their needs.

Out of the ordinary placement of anti theft devices

In one of my stores there is a problem that isn’t exactly unique to them but is somewhat of an epidemic.  They are constantly losing shoes to shoplifting.  In their efforts to prevent shoplifting in their store they have tried brainstorming numerous ways to battle this issue, but in spite of their efforts their total shrink in that department is astounding.  They have done everything from ensure one hundred percent tagging standards to twenty-four hour surveillance of the area, but still they get beat. 

The problem seems to be that the retail anti theft devices they are currently using have been beaten and the local thieves seem to have spread the word on the methods to do it.  After researching the problem we have come up with a somewhat unorthodox use for a different type of retail anti theft device which so far has seemed to confound the culprits.  Now the department is required to use 2 Alarm locks on all footwear in the store, specifically running the cable through the eye-loops of the footwear itself or attaching it to a structurally sound part of the item.  Also, if possible, they are to run the 2 Alarm units through BOTH pieces of footwear, thereby ensuring that the pair is kept intact and should anyone attempt to defeat the 2 Alarm piece it will simply sound off alerting associates to possible purloining of product.

Which One Will You Pick?
