Keep Your Service Level Up

When you are in a retail establishment that is a high shrink area, it is easy to be distrustful of the customers coming in to shop. After a while you or your staff my just start to assume that everyone is a crook. When that mentality starts to take over, the level of customer service that everyone receives starts to go down.

When service diminishes, more than likely so do sales. Now the theft problem becomes even bigger as it rips away even more of your profit, as the sales are not compensating for the shrink losses.

One of the best ways to bring back that level of service, and redeem your dwindling sales is to employ the use of bottle locks with your bottle security.

Alpha Security makes a line called the EASy Bottle, because it really is easy. They are easy to use, easy to audit for compliance, and easy to ward of the crooks in your store.

Once your bottle security is in place, you can easily go back to providing customer service, without judgment, to your clientele. You can let the locks protect your inventory without you needing to maintain constant vigilance and suspicion.

While you will still have to keep an eye out for the few that will still make an attempt at theft, the majority of those who enter your store will now be legitimate customers.

What is your squeaky wheel?

It is very true that the squeaky wheel gets the grease. We respond to whatever is loudest, most pressing, and sometimes just the most irritating situation in front of us. All too often, it is a customer that is the squeaky wheel monopolizing our time. The complaints or sheer neediness of a demanding customer can easily draw our attention away from what we really want or should be focusing on.

Rarely are we drawn to shrink reduction strategies as a squeaky wheel. Shrink losses tend to be an underlying, looming detail that eventually we get around to. Unless we are being faced with a shoplifter in our presence, liquor bottle security takes its place on the back burner.

Bottle locks are a great form of liquor bottle security. Their ease of installation and removal simplify the process of adding bottle locks to your everyday operations. There is nothing worse than trying to add an additional task to an already full schedule of events.

Using bottle security helps to free up your time so you can easily go back to working with those squeaky wheels. A bottle lock will help deter shoplifters, even if you have your back turned with a different issue.

Don’t make your bottle security any harder than what it has to be, start using a bottle lock today.

Checkpoint systems can only do so much

As much as one would like to think that all you need for retail theft prevention in a store is buying a Checkpoint security system it just isn’t that simple.  As good an anti shoplifting measure as Checkpoint systems are they don’t function as the be-all, end-all device in the game of loss prevention.  Instead it serves to supplement you, the store manager or loss prevention team, in your bid to stop shoplifters.

Don’t think that this blog is meant to dissuade anyone from actually procuring a Checkpoint security system; it isn’t.  The truth of the matter is that I am simply attempting to enlighten the readers to the facts: there is no such thing as the ‘absolute power’ in retail theft prevention.  There is no super-device, no magic arrow to solve ALL your shoplifting problems.  It is YOU who has to determine what suite of equipment best assists your staff and fits to your store’s layout.  It is YOU who has to decide what provides the best coverage of your products and entry points.

Even if Checkpoint systems could do almost everything on their own, they would be nothing without human oversight.  Even the best of systems can be defeated by determined thieves so it is up to us, the humans who can make decisions to go on the evidence before us.  At the very least, these systems provide us with a set of stop-gaps that allow us to ward of less determined criminals and create obstacles to slow down the much more ‘seasoned’ ones.

Stay Savvy

The small business owner is a unique specimen of the business culture. They are often financially savvy, innovative and very passionate about what they are doing. They are not the ones to stand on the sidelines waiting for success to fall in their laps. This is why they are living their lives as an entrepreneur.

This is also why, when faced with an unexplained shortage, lack of sales production, or an all around bad hire, they take it personally. Small business owners generally have screened, interviewed and hired each of their employees personally. It is personally that they take any affront to their hiring decisions.

This is one of the critical areas that running background checks can help with. Employee background checks that are conducted by an outside, impartial Background Check Company can see past a personal, emotional response to a job candidate.

The Background Check Company’s only job is to see past the black and white on an application. They can run various levels of employee background checks to cover credit, work history, convictions, pay rates, etc.

These background checks help to fill in the blanks that are sometimes overlooked in an interview or a pre screen. Often, just mentioning to a potential candidate that there will be a background check conducted for all new hires is enough to keep some of the truly bad seeds at bay.

They know that any lies or issues they are trying to cover up will potentially be unearthed. This leaves the small business owner free to go back to being passionate about their jobs, their stores, their customers and their business, all while maintaining their financial savvy.

Clothing Security: Keep Your Clothes Safe

If you own a business that sells clothing, chances are that you own a business that loses clothing too. If you do not have the luxury of having Loss Prevention in your store you must rely on two things to reduce your shrink/loss: Customer Service, and Deterrence. Clothing security encompasses a couple of tactics.

First, having security tags on clothes is vital as a visual deterrent. Shoplifters are less likely to steal merchandise if they notice clothing security tags on it such as checkpoint tags. Checkpoint tags are tags that clip onto clothing and sound an alarm once they pass a certain checkpoint (the door alarms). These tags go hand in hand with a clothing alarm. This brings me to my second method of clothing security.

A clothing alarm is a device set up by the exit doors that look like metal detectors. They activate and let off a loud noise when it senses merchandise with checkpoint tags still attached. Throughout my experience as a Loss Prevention Officer, I can tell you that the one thing a shoplifter hates is being noticed. And he or she will be noticed standing at a door with alarms going off.

Deterrence is extremely important in order to minimize loss and maximize profit. Investing in clothing security tags such as checkpoint tags, making sure proper placement of security tags on clothes, and having a clothing alarm to compliment the security devices are essential parts of maintaining clothing security.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase a clothing alarm or clothing security tags and an Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system.

Keep It Under Wraps

As spring is well under way, so are many home improvement projects for homeowners. In the home improvement industry, the time from beginning of April through the fourth of July is the busiest time. Memorial day weekend is often compared to black Friday or Christmas. If most stores don’t make their sales during this time, their entire year’s projections can be shot.

I have spent many years trying to prevent shoplifting from happening in the home improvement stores that I have managed loss prevention for. I know that as this busy season increases sales, it also increases shoplifters and shoplifting attempts.

One of the best retail anti theft devices I have seen used is the Spider Wrap. I wish all stores were using the spider wraps. They are criss- crossed wires with a center disc joining them as they wrap around a box. The Spider Wrap keeps the boxes contents inside. If anyone attempts to tamper with the box, the Spider Wrap will alarm.

Shoplifters are not always well prepared. When they come across a Spider Wrap, there is no easy way to deactivate the alarm without it going off. The last thing a shoplifter wants is to draw attention to them, so it is a pretty good deterrent, I’d say. Keep it under wraps, and keep your shoplifters at bay.

When they don’t work alone

I am seeing more and more cases where my internal (employee) theft cases revolve around an employee and someone from the outside. That is just fine by me. When you have a single associate stealing, it can be problematic trying to find out how and where they are stealing.

When an employee is working with someone, I see more activity around the registers. It may sound strange, but it works out better for me in the long run.

Most of the time when an employee passes merchandise off to a buddy or relative, they move the product past the checkouts. It is to give the appearance that the items are being paid for. The other reason is that is where the detachers are to get rid of any checkpoint labels or checkpoint security tags that are present.

For a lot of retailers, the cash wraps are where the bulk of cameras are. So when an employee is at the register deactivating RF labels, we can see what is going on, as well as recording it for further evidence.

By having Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint security tags on our product, it slows down the theft giving us a better chance at detecting the pass off, and accurately case building. We can recover more merchandise and restitution in the end, all thanks to the RF labels.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase Checkpoint labels, Checkpoint security tags, and other RF labels that can help you stop shoplifting with your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system in your business.

An Eye Witness Account

When I first started in Loss Prevention many years ago, not every store had a good CCTV camera system in place. One store in particular had the Frankenstein system. It was pieced together from so many different system that our new service vendor would not work on it because of how patched together it was.

This store firmly believed that an eyewitness testimony was still far superior to anything else. No one can contest an eyewitness account because there isn’t any other evidence on the contrary.

For some situations, they were absolutely right. That is until I brought my first employee theft investigation to a close.

$54,000 admitted dollars later; my store was starting to realize what they had been missing, literally. Without a usable CCTV system, they were missing not only live instances of theft, but they had no way to review to see how far the scope of an employee theft investigation could take them.

They had been relying on live shots of employee theft. They didn’t realize that if the employee theft investigation produces previous instances of theft, than you can potentially seek restitution.  The only way to get that is to have a comprehensive CCTV system that not only allows you to see the live action, but also a recordable set up as well.

I recommend a digital system. Bigger storage capacity, longer retention, clearer recordings and no one had to remember to change out a day’s VHS tape.

What’s in Your Bag?

One of the tricks of the trade is using a bolster or booster bag to shoplift. These are devices made to help shoplifters go about your store undetected. Some states do have legislation making it a crime to be in possession of or to use a bolster or booster. That doesn’t mean it stops shoplifters from stealing though. Remember, shoplifting is also illegal, and they ignore that one too.

In the most simple terms, bolsters and booster bags may be anything from harnesses, to secret pockets sewn into clothes, to foil lined bags. Each one is designed to attempt to circumvent any anti theft devices you may have in place.

A trained Loss Prevention professional will know how to spot those shoplifting tools, and make sure that the shoplifters are in fact apprehended and prosecuted. These tools can wind up being a thief’s downfall, as they further prove their intent to steal.

Keep your clothing security programs in place and even the most innovative shoplifter who thinks they have a fool proof tool will be thwarted in the end.

Less Is More

Famed architect and designer Ludwig Meis van der Rohe once said less is more. He was more right that what he probably realized, especially when it comes to retail security measures.

Some people are under the assumption that in order to get the best, you have to spend more. The reality is, just because you are spending less, doesn’t mean you are getting less.

In the case of using cheap tags and cheap labels for your anti shoplifting needs, spending less actually gives you more. More money to spend elsewhere. More peace of mind knowing that you are protecting your assets from theft. Don’t forget, you are helping keep more money in American business by buying these tags and labels that are manufactured here in America.

You will be getting so much more for your dollars spent than if you went with a name brand EAS tag or EAS labels for your store’s security program. Cheap, reliable, and effective is hard to argue with.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that more is always more. This is one simple situation that proves less really is more.
