What is your squeaky wheel?

It is very true that the squeaky wheel gets the grease. We respond to whatever is loudest, most pressing, and sometimes just the most irritating situation in front of us. All too often, it is a customer that is the squeaky wheel monopolizing our time. The complaints or sheer neediness of a demanding customer can easily draw our attention away from what we really want or should be focusing on.

Rarely are we drawn to shrink reduction strategies as a squeaky wheel. Shrink losses tend to be an underlying, looming detail that eventually we get around to. Unless we are being faced with a shoplifter in our presence, liquor bottle security takes its place on the back burner.

Checkpoint systems can only do so much

As much as one would like to think that all you need for retail theft prevention in a store is buying a Checkpoint security system it just isn’t that simple. At the very least, these systems provide us with a set of stop-gaps that allow us to ward of less determined criminals and create obstacles to slow down the much more ‘seasoned’ ones.

Keep It Under Wraps

As spring is well under way, so are many home improvement projects for homeowners. In the home improvement industry, the time from beginning of April through the fourth of July is the busiest time. Memorial day weekend is often compared to black Friday or Christmas. If most stores don’t make their sales during this time, their entire year’s projections can be shot.

I have spent many years trying to prevent shoplifting from happening in the home improvement stores that I have managed loss prevention for. I know that as this busy season increases sales, it also increases shoplifters and shoplifting attempts.

One of the best retail anti theft devices I have seen used is the Spider Wrap. I wish all stores were using the spider wraps. They are criss- crossed wires with a center disc joining them as they wrap around a box. The Spider Wrap keeps the boxes contents inside. If anyone attempts to tamper with the box, the Spider Wrap will alarm.

Shoplifters are not always well prepared. When they come across a Spider Wrap, there is no easy way to deactivate the alarm without it going off. The last thing a shoplifter wants is to draw attention to them, so it is a pretty good deterrent, I’d say. Keep it under wraps, and keep your shoplifters at bay.

When they don’t work alone

I am seeing more and more cases where my internal (employee) theft cases revolve around an employee and someone from the outside. That is just fine by me. When you have a single associate stealing, it can be problematic trying to find out how and where they are stealing.

When an employee is working with someone, I see more activity around the registers. It may sound strange, but it works out better for me in the long run.

Most of the time when an employee passes merchandise off to a buddy or relative, they move the product past the checkouts. It is to give the appearance that the items are being paid for. The other reason is that is where the detachers are to get rid of any checkpoint labels or checkpoint security tags that are present.

For a lot of retailers, the cash wraps are where the bulk of cameras are. So when an employee is at the register deactivating RF labels, we can see what is going on, as well as recording it for further evidence.

An Eye Witness Account

When I first started in Loss Prevention many years ago, not every store had a good CCTV camera system in place. One store in particular had the Frankenstein system. It was pieced together from so many different system that our new service vendor would not work on it because of how patched together it was.

This store firmly believed that an eyewitness testimony was still far superior to anything else. No one can contest an eyewitness account because there isn’t any other evidence on the contrary.

For some situations, they were absolutely right. That is until I brought my first employee theft investigation to a close.

$54,000 admitted dollars later; my store was starting to realize what they had been missing, literally. Without a usable CCTV system, they were missing not only live instances of theft, but they had no way to review to see how far the scope of an employee theft investigation could take them.

They had been relying on live shots of employee theft. They didn’t realize that if the employee theft investigation produces previous instances of theft, than you can potentially seek restitution. The only way to get that is to have a comprehensive CCTV system that not only allows you to see the live action, but also a recordable set up as well.

I recommend a digital system. Bigger storage capacity, longer retention, clearer recordings and no one had to remember to change out a day’s VHS tape.

What’s in Your Bag?
