The Two-Headed Monster: Employee Theft and Shoplifting

theft (2)The big news is that in 2013 the rate of retail shrinkage continued to grow because of the continuing economic crisis.

Employee theft and shoplifting still take the largest bites out of a retailer’s profits out of all categories of shrink, combining for 66 percent of the total.

Comparing the two, employee theft and shoplifting, most people would expect shoplifting to lead the way. Statistics from the Global Retail Theft Barometer for the United States, shoplifting does win the theft race at 34 percent of the total to 32 percent for employee theft.

In frequency of instances, there are far more shoplifters than employee thieves, but the average amount stolen by employees is estimated to be 6 to 10 times the average amount taken by shoplifters.

The crime of employee theft should be easier than shoplifting for the retailer to control:  After all, the employee is a known quantity (why would any business owner hire a thief?) and his/her actions are apt to be examined at any time by management or storeowners.  Yet, employee theft continues.

If there are any recurrent themes in employee theft cases, they are these:  The employee began stealing on a small scale and increased both frequency and amounts as he/she became bolder; and the employee is generally in a position some of degree of trust and is not audited or checked up on regularly.

No retailer should assume that he knows his employees well enough to say, “Sally Salesclerk will never steal from me.  She’s my most trusted employee.”  A statement like that will only lead to disappointment. The Retailers who make these types of statements are naïve to the retail environment. There is always a threat of both employee theft and shoplifting. What separates good leaders from bad, is awareness and action.

If you are not aware of how and why employees steal you will never see it unless it hits you in the face. The very nature of employee theft is behind the scenes. So unless you know what to look for such as specific employee behavior, actions and attitudes, you will have lost a lot of money and merchandise and it will be too late. We can provide you with training that is both easy and affordable. Arm yourself with these techniques and you will win the employee theft battle.

When it comes to Shoplifters the best attack is to make their life difficult enough that they go down the street to someone else who is not prepared. This is not that difficult to achieve. Shoplifters by their very nature require anonymity and brief privacy to do their “job”. Customer service will take care of much of this. However, as retailers we cannot provide enough customer coverage as we would like because of payroll limitations. And we cannot be everywhere at one time. Camera systems are passive and are not a threat to the shoplifter and they know it. That is where a Checkpoint System comes in. A Checkpoint System is working 24/7, no holidays, sick time, breaks…

Regardless of the shrink figures, no retailer should relax his standards.  Continue to educate staff members on shoplifting prevention, install a Checkpoint System and have training and controls in place to eliminate the possibility of employee theft. Then react quickly when it is suspected. We can teach you how!

Take steps now to avoid having profits eaten by the Two-Headed Profit Monsters, employee theft and shoplifting, and reduce your shrinkage losses. Call us today at 1-770-426-0547 or email us at [email protected] and fix the problem once and for all.

Three Simple Steps – Anti-shoplifting

Trying to teach my child how to do things, I have learned the art of simplifying a process. If I can teach her in three steps, it is easier for her to learn as well as easier for her to remember what to do. When I think about all of the anti-shoplifting action plans I have seen over the years, I wonder how many of them would have been more successful had we simplified them down to three simple steps.

Take adding Checkpoint security tags into a store. I have seen some crazy, in depth, time consuming and overly complex action plans to get the program going. The reality is that it only takes three simple steps to use Checkpoint security tags to stop shoplifting.

  • Step one:  Decide what merchandise needs to have some retail theft prevention.
  • Step two:  Put the anti-shoplifting tags on that merchandise.
  • Step three:  Move the tagged merchandise back onto the sales floor to be sold.

Now, it is not that I think everyone needs to be spoken to like a three year old, it’s quite the contrary. I just see too many employees or managers who are over thinking their strategies and the end result is that their plans often are not followed through or successful. By simplifying an action plan, you can give that plan a better shot of being successfully implemented and used.

Value and Reliability- Alpha Security

Retail anti theft devices need to provide value and be reliable. If they are not, there is no point in using them them. That is why Alpha Security puts a major focus on value and reliability when they design their products.
I see great plans to stop shrink that are so complicated to execute that the plan dies before it even has a chance to work. When a plan or product is simple to use and doesn’t disrupt the normal flow of business employees will execute more completely and customers won’t have a negative shopping impact.
Part of the reliability of Alpha Security retail anti theft devices is that they are simple to use. If your employees don’t execute the compliance piece to 100%, your investments to prevent shoplifting is now more expensive because there are loop holes that continue to allow shrink to happen. If it is easy, then your employees will use them.
They also will not upset customers with erroneous alarms. By making the retail anti theft devices visually appealing, the customers can continue to enjoy your carefully merchandised stores without unsightly security tools in place.

What You Should Find – EASy Bottle

The basics of bottle security are there to ensure you get the most benefit from security products such as the EASy Bottle by Alpha Security.

To start with, you will find some of the best features in these bottle locks. The EASy Bottle has a two stage locking mechanism, which helps ensure a solid lock on the product that will not come off in the hands of a shoplifter. From an employee’s perspective, they are easy to remove and attach. This cuts down on the amount of payroll needed to ensure compliance.

Some of the other benefits of using a bottle lock for bottle security are that for a simple application of bottle security, you gain maximum protection through product denial. They also cover a wide range of bottle types making them a versatile application to fit all of your needs. Even the most unique sizes and shapes of bottles can be covered using bottle locks.

From a financial perspective, there is a good return on the initial investment. Since the bottle locks are made from an extremely durable polycarbonate material, they can be used over and over again. There is a very minimal maintenance cost as there is very little that will need to be replaced. It is more likely that a bottle lock will be replaced because it was lost than because it was broken.

Paper Resume – Pre-employment Screening

Where to start? When I look at a job applicant, I start by looking through their job application. Working with a bigger company, I get online submittals that are carefully screened by a key word system that looks to pick up on specific traits. It is like an initial background check. It is a pre-employment screening tool to help stream line the hiring process for us.

For most small businesses, this type of pre-employment screening is a luxury that they do not have. Small business owners and managers usually have to manually review a multitude of paper applications. The plus side is that you might end up with a paper resume with the application.

That can be a great way to do a type of pre-employment screening that automated systems do not have. Electronic resumes usually are amended to the website’s fonts and formatting. By seeing a paper resume, you know that everything was hand made by the applicant.

This gives an insight into your applicant. You get to see more of their personality. Is the resume formal or personable? What type of paper was it printed on – stationary or plain typing paper? How about a bright neon color paper with a crazy hard to read font? Did they bother to not only spell check but proof read their writing?

You can see a person’s attention to detail better on a paper resume than on an online, standardized application.

How Much is Too Much? – Clothing Security

How much is too much? When you are merchandising and stocking in your departments, traditionally you want to fill the shelves and the racks as much as you can. It is usually discouraged to have things in a back stockroom. How does this factor into clothing security? Can there be too much product on the sales floor?

If you have theft issues, then yes, you can have too much product out. Thieves will take every opportunity you give them. If you put out every piece of high theft merchandise, do not be surprised if the thieves actually take every piece.

Clothing security actually goes beyond just putting clothing security tags on your merchandise. It involves taking a second look at the opportunities your store presents. Can you reduce your shelf quantities and not make a negative impact on your sales? If so, do it. Take those items and back stock them.

By giving your store a different approach to theft prevention than just using Checkpoint tags, you will be better off. Reducing your shelf quantity is just another enhancement to your clothing security.

The right way is to look at your current sales and make a determination if you can make the reductions. If you sell multiples of an item and need a large representation of this item, don’t sacrifice your sales through a shelf quantity reduction. However, those situations are generally more of an exception than a rule.

Do Not Mix – Alpha Fashion2

If there are two things I have always felt that don’t mix, it has to be shoes and retail anti-theft devices. I completely understand that shoe departments are traditionally a high theft area, but finding good ways to prevent shoplifting is difficult at the very least.

Retail anti-theft devices like a hard tag and pin configuration are so limited. At my very first retail job I was assigned the task of retagging the entire shoe department because some inexperienced (or apathetic) clerk put the tags on the wrong way. The large, bulky ink tag part was on the inside of the shoe (instead of the pin) and no one could comfortably try them on.

That was assuming there was a shoelace eye to thread the pin tag through. Dress shoes, sandals, or loafers were left to their own devices, as there was no good place to thread the pin through.

Now, with the help of the Alpha Security Alpha Fashion2 Accessory Tag, there are more skillful ways to prevent shoplifting. The Alpha Fashion2 is a small lanyard that can thread through even the smallest of details on a dress shoe. The smaller overall size of the tag also helps keep it customer friendly so it does not take away from a customer trying the shoes on.

Up in Smoke – Employee Theft Investigation

I recently concluded an employee theft investigation in one of my general merchandise stores. The last time I was in this store, I had noticed a customer who had been in and out of the store several times during the day.  At first, I thought he might have been a shoplifter because I never saw him buy anything.

I then thought differently as this man was awfully friendly with my store employees. I then began to suspect that there might be some employee theft going on. I started to review my recorded video of the cash registers for the last few days.

Over and over again I saw the man coming up to the register. He would speak with the employees, who would give him a few loose cigarettes out of a pack that was mostly hidden by the registers. Sometimes the man would hand over cash or sometimes it was something in a bag that I could not identify.

I then suspected that this was employee theft of our cigarettes.  I went out and did a physical count of the cigarettes in question and compared it to what our inventory should have been. We were several cartons short.

As it turned out, the employees were selling loose cigarettes to this man, who in turn, would sell the cigarettes (and other store merchandise) in the parking lot – splitting the cash with the employees. The cigarettes were, of course, stolen from our inventory.

Anti-Shoplifting Devices

theft (12)Shoplifting affects everyone.  Shoplifters affect the retail store or small business store they enter, the individual consumer and employee of the store. Increase in prices is something stores do to outset the revenue they are losing due to shoplifting. Stores around the world invest heavily in security systems, security personnel and anti-theft devices to deter shoplifters from entering their stores and costing them revenue losses that ultimately affect everyone.

How Anti-shoplifting Devices Work

Let’s imagine for the moment that you own a large department store, and you are having a big problem with shoplifting. (You’re not alone — retail stores lost $26 billion last year to shoplifting!) What are you going to do? You cannot let it continue, because every month your accounting system tells you that you are losing thousands of dollars to theft. It forces you to raise your prices, and that means you have to charge more than the store next door. That can make it very hard to compete, especially if the store next door is successfully discouraging shoplifting.

As a retailer focusing on the problem of what’s known in the industry as loss prevention, you basically have three methods at your disposal to slow the shoplifters down: (1) You can watch everyone in the store like a hawk and make sure they don’t steal anything. You can do that using security guards and/or video surveillance systems; (2) You can make things hard to remove from the store by bolting them down, attaching cables, putting things in display cases and behind the counter; (3) You can use a system that attaches special tags onto everything so that an alarm goes off whenever a shoplifter tries to walk out with an item. In this article, we’ll look at each of these options in more detail.

Virginia’s Quik-E Foods Cuts Losses with March Networks Retail Video Surveillance Solution

a global provider of intelligent IP video solutions, today announced that customer Quik-E Foods of Lynchburg, Virginia is upgrading to its next-generation retail solution for enhanced security and loss prevention. The March Networks solution integrates high-quality video, audio and transaction data to combat point-of-sale (POS) fraud and other threats to the business. The powerful solution has already helped Quik-E Foods improve operations and resolve serious incidents across its chain of 12 convenience stores and five automated car washes.
“We caught a cashier who was pausing transactions and then pocketing the money once customers left the store. The scam was adding up to more than $6,000 in losses,” explained Quik-E Foods Vice President Todd Burgess. “With the deep POS integration and search tools in our March Networks solution, those transactions showed up as voids, and we also had the video evidence to verify what was happening. Added Employee Benefit Package- Pre Employment Screening

With so many companies making it blatantly obvious that the employees are an after thought, pre employment screening is frequently viewed as another company hoop to be jumped through. Maybe it is time we talk to our potential employees about the benefits that they will get from undergoing the employee background checks.
As business owners and managers, we are all aware of the benefits from low turnover, so we really should be presenting pre employment screening in the same context that we do vacation time, insurance, or 401K opportunities. In other words, these are benefits to and for the employee, not just a protection for the company.  The more an employee feels like they are taken care of by the company, the longer they will want to stay and be engaged.
Make sure that they understand the effects of employee background checks, and more importantly the direct effect of not having them.
When you verify work history, you can discover large employment gaps or frequent job bouncing. Those employees can exhibit a serious lack of commitment to their job and their productivity. Not hiring those candidates help keep high employee morale as everyone is doing their share of the workload.
When you are validating education history, you are ensuring that other employees will not have to work double duty to compensate for the lied about skill and knowledge sets of a potential bad hire.
When you are able to weed out potentially dangerous or deceitful employees, you are creating a safer work environment for the employees who do make it past the initial screening.
