A Premium Solution – Alpha Security

When you use the Alpha Security Bottle Locks, you have a premium product to protect your premium liquors and wines. What makes this EASy Bottle lock superior to any other lock?

Ultimately, it is about getting the biggest bang for your buck. There is no lengthy training involved which means your return on investment isn’t diluted from spending countless payroll hours teaching your employees how the bottle locks are to be used.

Your payroll is also saved by not needing to have an employee retrieve every single bottle of premium liquor because it is locked up in a case somewhere.

Using the Alpha Security Crystal Guarde has visual benefits as well. The clear top allows the tax ID stamp to be visible at all times.  This saves your employees time if they need to show the stamp to auditors, and potentially face fines for non-compliance.

The bottle locks also have the word “alarm” clearly written on them so shoplifters have a better clue that the bottles are being protected from theft and sampling.

The smaller design makes it easier to maximize shelf displays and product placement. The clear top is also less visually distracting. You see more of the product than you do the bottle locks when you scan across the store.

While this is not an all-inclusive list of the features that are included in the Alpha Security locks, it is a great way to learn that this really is a premium product.

Educating Your Customers- Alpha Shark Tag

Using the Alpha Shark Tag is an effective way to prevent “wardrobing” of your clothes. That means that customers have a decreased ability to purchase an item or entire outfit with the intention of wearing once and then returning the items. This is not designed to prevent shoplifting. This is designed specifically with wardrobing in mind.
This small, red plastic tag is tamper evident and eliminates the guesswork an employee has to do at the point of return. If the Alpha Shark Tag is still on and is 100% intact, the return is good.
The issue is in how to educate your customers so they know what they can and cannot do. The customers won’t have any idea what the tag is designed for. If they do not have any education, you can create customer issues. Legitimate customers may automatically take the tag off when they get home, not knowing that it needs to stay on. If they later change their mind and return the item, you wouldn’t want a declined return from a customer who honestly had not worn the item.
The easiest solution is to attach a hangtag to the pin of the Alpha Shark tag. The tag should have a copy of the store’s return policy on one side, and the removal instructions on the back. Alpha Security provides an example of such a tag to be used to avoid possible confusion and customer complaints.

How do you educate your customers so they know what they can and cannot do when they see the Alpha Shark Tag? The customers won’t have any idea what the tag is designed for. If they do not have any education, you can create customer issues.

Legitimate customers may automatically take the tag off when they get home, not knowing that it needs to stay on. If they later change their mind and return the item, you wouldn’t want a declined return from a customer who honestly had not worn the item.

The easiest solution is to attach a hangtag to the pin that holds the tag to the garment. The Alpha Shark Tag should now have a copy of the store’s return policy and the removal instructions attached to it. If you are looking for examples, Alpha Security has made one to be used.

Now, in addition to the cashier or salesperson verbally explaining the Alpha Shark Tag at the point of purchase, there is a written instruction physically attached to the tag. When used together, there should not be any confusion as to what the tag does, as well as how and when to remove it.

It may not prevent shoplifting, but it will prevent undo customer complaints.

Can You Do Better? – Background Check Experts

There are many companies out there that specialize in being background check experts. Their main function is to dig deep into an applicant or current employee’s past to help make a realistic determination in the hiring process.

Unfortunately, even these background check experts can miss out on finding a critical piece of history. As we have seen in some of the more tragic recent events, major companies whose employees need extremely high levels of security clearance have missed something big in their pre-employment screening.

So why spend the money and take the risk of outsourcing your background checks? Well, if the big guys can’t always find everything, what makes you think you can do better? Do you have their resources, time or their technology to more thoroughly conduct these background checks?

I know that I don’t, and realistically you probably don’t either. This is not a testament that sometimes even the background check experts can fail. Rather this is a realistic look at how hard it really is to conduct thorough background checks.

These are the people who have nothing to do in their day but to follow up on leads, contact out of county or state jurisdictions and run traces on work and address histories. They can track known acquaintances and family who might be liabilities if a potential employee gets sucked into their outside influence.

I am much more willing to let the experts spend the time to be as complete as possible because I know that I have a better chance of missing something than they would.

The Least Complicated – Clothing Alarm

Shoplifters will always find the path of least resistance. When they are trying to shoplift clothing, they will go out of their way to find merchandise that does not have any clothing security tags on them.

If that is not possible, the next thing that a shoplifter does is to try and leave the store without any visual clues that they have any merchandise with them. That means they will try to conceal the stolen product.

Concealing merchandise is not about trying to bypass the clothing alarms. It is about plausible deniability. Even if the clothing alarm responds to the concealed clothing security tags, a shoplifter who is seen empty handed can blame the alarm on something else.

If an employee does not see any merchandise being stolen, they have a harder time trying to get product back. Compare this to a shoplifter carrying merchandise, or holding a bulging purse. The visual cue that there might be stolen product makes it much less discrete for a shoplifter leaving the store.

More experienced shoplifters will use boosters to effectively conceal product. It can include false casts on arms and legs. There are ways to add extra hidden pockets to an already puffy coat. Sometimes it is as simple as a booster under a woman’s dress that looks like a pregnancy belly, but is really a hollow shell designed to have stolen clothing stuffed inside of it.

Employee Theft- Retail Security

I knew that Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint tags were originally designed as anti theft devices to protect against external theft- or shoplifters. What I didn’t know was how these same devices are a theft deterrent for employees as well.
Did you know that retail security could help you eliminate or reduce employee theft in your business?
It took me a long time to figure that out. It wasn’t until I had some actual training in loss prevention that I realized how truly multifunctional anti theft devices could be for both anti shoplifting and employee theft deterrents.
You see when an employee looks to steal merchandise, they go through a very similar process that a shoplifter does.
They look for a quiet moment when no one is watching to commit their act. They look to figure out how to get the merchandise out of the store. They also look to see how which merchandise would be best to take.
If the merchandise has no anti theft devices attached, then the merchandise is more desirable. It will be easier to get out the door undetected by other employees or management. When you use retail security, both shoplifters and employees are less likely to steal from you.

Not The Trade Off You Are Looking For- Security Tags on Clothes

Accidents are extremely costly due to the medical expenses involved in addition to the potential longevity of the accident claim. It is very rare that the cost of one accident is less than the costs incurred through multiple shoplifting losses. Clothing security is financially ineffective if you are creating unsafe environments.
Cable locking systems are an ideal way to protect runs of clothing like jackets, handbags or suits. The power system has a built in clothing alarm. The steel cords are highly effective security tags on clothes.
The downside to cable locking systems is that they pose a potential safety hazard. The cables are generally only one size that is quite lengthy to incorporate the maximum amount of merchandise.
The power supply frequently needs to be plugged into an outlet to make the clothing alarm operable. The end result can be an unsightly mess of cords and plugs and wires. All of which are difficult to shop around and could be easy to trip over.
By creating a safer environment you are saving yourself thousands of dollars from potential general liability claims. When you switch to the Alpha Security CableLoks you can continue to use top quality security tags on clothes without all of the bulk and potential tripping hazards.

Shoplifting Prevention

theft (1)According to the National Association for Shoplifting Prevention, getting caught while shoplifting is 1 in 48, and calling the authorities to turn the shoplifter into their hands is1 in 2.  The costs associated with prosecuting the shoplifters have been one of the major reasons why retail and small business stores opt out about pressing charges, or taking any more measures against them. A “Don’t come back to our store” is not a deterrent to the shoplifter and the likelihood of his returning to your store again or another similar one is highly probable.

Special skirt allegedly aided family in multi-state shoplifting spree

Three family members were arrested in connection with a shop lifting and fencing spree that spanned nearly a decade, at least three states and valued $7.1 million dollars.

58-year-old Branko Bogdanov and his 52-year-old wife Lela and their 34-year-old daughter Julia of Northbrook have been charged with interstate transportation of stolen property, according U.S. Attorney’s Office.

According to a statement, the Bogdanovs’ “shopping odyssey” began on February 17 in Oklahoma, continued in to Texas and ended in Louisiana on February 20th.    They were arrested Tuesday in the Northbrook home.

According to the complaint filed, the family targeted Barnes and Noble and Toys R Us stealing items that included American Girl dolls, Furbies and Legos. The complaint states that Lela wore a long skirt “that appeared larger and fuller when she exited” the stores  than when she entered.  The skirt was seized as part of the investigation and continued a lining “capable of containing multiple rectangular objects.”

The family worked with another person who acted as their “fence” and sold the items on eBay, the statement said.  Over the last decade, their merchandise had a “retail value of $7.1 million and sold for a combined total of $4.2 million,” according to the statement.

Another Pressing Matter- Anti Theft Devices

Just like every store employee, at some point you have to stop watching a suspected shoplifter in order to attend to another function of your job. I had one particular incident that I still think of because I knew this was a solid case, and our lack of clothing security was why she was here.
One time I spent thirty minutes waiting and “cleaning” the fitting room, because there was a girl inside, who was going to steal some shirts, and kept checking to see if I left. I was bound and determined that I could outwait her. Eventually she had to give up, right?
That was a great idea, at least until I had another pressing matter come up.
There was a hurt customer that I needed to attend to. So I left my potential suspect to address the injured customer. It didn’t take long before I saw the girl leave. When I went to see if she left shirts, all I found was a pile of empty hangers.
I knew that if we had used anti theft devices, even if they were cheap labels and cheap tags, this girl would not have left with our merchandise.

Through The Front Door – Retail Theft Prevention

I recently had an opportunity to speak to several peers in the retail industry. We chatted about a variety of topics but the conversation soon turned toward our issues with retail theft prevention. It seemed we all were experiencing some form of refund or return fraud and didn’t know how to handle it.

For some of my peers, the refund fraud was causing more issues with policies. They did not have policies in place regarding refunds that did not have a receipt. As a result, refunders targeted them on almost a daily basis.

For others, they did not use anti-shoplifting devices for retail theft prevention. Since the theft of the merchandise was so easy, the store was viewed as an easy refund target within the community.

Our store uses checkpoint systems to stop shoplifting. This helps to alleviate most of the criminal element from coming into the store to start with. Next, these same tools that we use for retail theft prevention also help clue us in when someone tries a fraudulent refund. They come to the cashier and try to refund merchandise that still has anti shoplifting tags still attached, and no receipt.

We started a policy of allowing customers three no receipted refunds within a six-month period before we declined the return. That gave the legitimate shopper an opportunity to return items that a receipt was lost, or they received the items as a gift.
