The EAS Decision: “No Stone Left Unturned”

Most large clothing retailers have an EAS system that aids them in the fight to stop shoplifting. They have the experience and the budgets to employ these systems company wide. It is the small to mid size clothing retailers that have the hardest time making the jump to employing a company wide EAS system. The thought of outfitting stores with the RF pedestals buying checkpoint security tags and checkpoint labels then ensuring the system is implemented correctly can send executives into a tailspin. That is why it is important for loss prevention executives to be able to communicate the cost effectiveness of making the right business decision.

Taking the first step is always the toughest. In my experience to research the possibility of installing checkpoint systems company wide I found that taking as many partners as possible from a variety of departments within the company allowed us to clearly define our wants and needs as goals to be achieved. One can’t just throw money at an issue by buying a bunch of RF security labels and RF security tags and hope to impact shrink in a positive way. Obviously when inventory numbers are trending higher than what the industry or the company deems acceptable people get nervous and the sense of urgency can tempt a person to cut corners. Many retailers immediately grasp at any straw to stop shoplifting.

I started with the internal audit and inventory control department heads when starting the process to research the possibility of a companywide roll out of checkpoint. I wanted a breakout of the company’s overall shrink by categories, by dollar and by percentage as well as a top ten category breakout detailing the exact skus being lost to ascertain the top loss skus. At that point we had the numbers and the information to take the next step to sit down with the checkpoint representative. I told him I wanted a detailed presentation of his product in a way that even my grandmother would understand. I was pleasantly surprised when he arrived with a wide array of checkpoint labels and checkpoint security tags as well as samples of the EAS pedestals to be installed. This is when I brought in the “bean counters” of the company to crunch the numbers to see if the money spent would be worth the savings gained. I do not think the finance guys were as impressed with the capabilities of the RF labels and RF security tags but the potential savings had them on the edge of their seats. One curve ball checkpoint had was the capability to source tag, which means they could set up a way to fix the RF security tags and the RF security labels to the product at the distribution center to arrive at the stores pre tagged thus saving payroll at the store level as well as the possibility of stores over buying checkpoint security tags or checkpoint labels.

I was duly impressed with how versatile the RF label was in how many different products it could protect. Watching the Checkpoint representative’s ability to interact and answer the questions of employees from multiple departments was very interesting and allowed me to expand my own horizons as far as the different concerns each department might entertain. I compiled the pros and cons of RF security labels and RF tags as well as the complete system itself. One thing all departments realized is no matter how “smart” an RF label is nor how many RF labels are purchased they themselves can not stop shoplifting. The most important point driven home by the checkpoint representative was the fact that the system is interactive. All employees must take part in the daily audits, theft detection and alarm reaction to ensure the system operates at peak performance.

In the end a comprehensive proposal was put together by checkpoint after having input from various department heads within the company that met all of our wants and needs as well as laid out a detailed plan as how to achieve our shrink goals while being cost effective. Let us say there were “no RF labels left unturned”. Business owners take note, the process can be lengthy but you will feel very comfortable that you have not been rushed into any decision since you are not just purchasing a system but forming an ongoing partnership.

Checkpoint Systems , for when the normal tactics don’t work…

I recently worked a case where a group of thieves were hitting several stores in the area. We were using typical retail theft prevention tactics in our stores, which included great customer service and Checkpoint security system with their Checkpoint security tags. The thieves had their own method to counteract the anti shoplifting measures we had in place.

They would rent a U-Haul or similar vehicle and drive it up to an emergency exit. Half of their group would go into the store, while the other half sat waiting. The half inside the store would take the four-way of high- ticket items (think leather, coats, athletics) and push it to the emergency exit. There they opened the door and pushed the entire fixture onto the waiting truck and drove off!

Our doors were not alarmed with audibles, so it was an easy shot straight out the door before anyone was the wiser.

We had lost thousands of dollars as a district, and we were stumped as to what sort of retail theft prevention we could use, preferably one that would tie into our existing Checkpoint system.

As luck would have it, one of our stores was being remodeled and the new emergency exits had a warning sign stating that an alarm would go off. Sure enough, our thieves tried to hit that store. Taken aback by the new doors, their hesitation on what to do gave us enough time to contact the authorities and the entire group was apprehended.

In a follow up to the case, it turns out that there is a Checkpoint security system called the Exit Stopper by STI. It is both an audible alarm for your doors and a stop sign warning to go on the door. Had these been in place, we would have saved thousands of dollars in losses because this group would have gone somewhere else. There is always an anti shoplifting solution if you just look in the right places.

Stop Shoplifting With A Label?

How does a small paper label the size of a postage stamp make shoplifters look elsewhere? If it is an RF label that will activate a Checkpoint system at your customer doors! These small RF labels can be “hidden” in plain sight on your merchandise. The result is that shoplifting will go down and so will inventory shrinkage and loss.

RF security labels come in many varieties and sizes. From postage stamp size to 1¾” square and many sizes in between. The most common RF label is the 410. It is 1½ “square. RF labels come in plain, barcode and black.

Many of the plain RF security labels can be printed on with your thermal transfer printer that you use to print pricing labels now. Chances are that we have the same size plain paper label that you now print on as a RF Security label. This eliminates some labor of adding an additional label to your product.

Don’t want to print on your Checkpoint labels? Consider using a “barcode” RF label. The barcode is inert and cannot be read by you scanner. However, shoplifters will not know this and the barcode helps to disguise the label.

Black Checkpoint labels are, well, black in color. They work very well on dark colored packaging, liquor and wine bottles or some hidden place that you may want a label placed. How about putting black Checkpoint labels inside the back pocket of a pair of designer jeans?

You can stop shoplifting with a small paper label, a Checkpoint security tag! Get on board now and send shoplifters packing down the street to your competition that does not have Checkpoint security tags or labels.

Anti Shoplifting: A Key To Retail Success.

Checkpoint Security Systems is an industry leader in retail theft prevention.  This company is often looked toward for the leading technology in retail theft prevention.  Checkpoint security systems can provide any business with an appropriate retail theft prevention program.

Checkpoint Security Systems provides the retailer with both high technology integrated checkpoint systems, or basic proven systems for the budget minded business.  Checkpoint Security System distributes many different Checkpoint security tags to full-scale Checkpoint security systems.  Currently, Checkpoint Security Systems is offering anti shoplifting solutions for many facets of the retail industry.   For the retailer that has a high level of customer service or a particular visual store model, Checkpoint security systems offers the checkpoint security tag.  The checkpoint security tag allows a retailer to protect their merchandise without requiring the use of a larger plastic tag.  This retail theft prevention solution is perfect for the retailer that is trying to control loss and not have a visible distraction on their merchandise.  The Checkpoint security tags also allow the retailer to control the issue of return fraud.  The checkpoint security tag can also verify if, when and how the merchandise was purchased.

For the retailer that is looking for the impact of a soft tag, but the visual a stronger visual deterrent, the hard checkpoint security tag is for you.  These tags provide the retailer an enhanced anti shoplifting deterrent, as the plastic pin and lock device is visible to the shoplifter.  The hard checkpoint security tags can be interfaced with a checkpoint system’s security tower.   This system is often used in specialty and discount retailers that experience higher annual losses.

Thinking Outside the Box

Whether you work in soft lines or hard lines, chances are some of your merchandise comes in a box. It could be a decorative accessory for the home, perhaps a bottle of cologne, or maybe a watch. Whatever the contents are, retailers know that boxes of any kind make typical anti shoplifting methods hard to use.

The point of retail theft prevention is to take these challenges and make great solutions. That is one of the reasons why I like the Checkpoint security system. They seem to have a solution for every challenge.

One of their lines of Checkpoint security tags is a soft tag. It’s a mainstay in retail theft prevention. Easy to apply just about everywhere, they are about as thick as a piece of paper, so very discreet. They have two major advantages over other tags.

The first is that they work with every Checkpoint security system. They do not need to be held in contact with a deactivator to be disabled. That means they can be hidden inside a variety of packaging. They can also be hidden outside of the boxes too. How?

Reason number two. These Checkpoint security tags can be printed to be disguised as just about anything you can think of. A bar code, a price label, you name it! They even have standard messages to choose from if you don’t feel your anti shoplifting creativity flowing.

Thinking outside the box has never been easier!

Checkpoint Security System is a reliable solution to theft deterrence.

There are many anti shoplifting solutions available in the marketplace today.  One such solution is the Checkpoint security system.  There are many components to a Checkpoint security system that can be used in your fight for retail theft prevention.

On aspect of Checkpoint systems are sensor tags.  Checkpoint security tags are a leading retail anti shoplifting solution.  Checkpoint security tags come in a variety of shapes, sizes and applications so they will fit on whatever product you are trying to protect.  Checkpoint systems are reliable and stand the test of time.  The last thing you want to do is invest in retail theft prevention equipment only to have to constantly have it repaired and replaced.  Checkpoint makes a quality product that is well known amount Loss Prevention Professionals as well as shoplifters (which is perhaps the most important).

Another component of a Checkpoint security system is CCTV.  Cameras are a great anti shoplifting solution.  Shoplifters don’t want to go to jail.  If a would-be thief sees that he/she is being taped on video then they are much more likely to try to steal elsewhere as video evidence is hard to dispute in court.  To this end Public View Monitors are great retail theft prevention solutions.  I use them in my stores where we have our high value / high theft items.  It just gives the shoplifters that extra sign that they are being watched and recorded and I have seen a drastic decline in theft of those items in my stores overall.

There is no single solution to shoplifting.  That is why leaders like Checkpoint systems develop multiple solutions in an effort to make an overall impact in retail theft prevention.

Sometimes You Have To Laugh

I know that shrink losses are a serious matter. Billions of dollars are lost annually due to inventory theft. Seeing the attempts day in and day out I know it can be a grueling process trying to stop shoplifting. I also get to see the result of a well laid plan thwarting a shoplifter, often due to the use of Checkpoint security tags and Checkpoint labels.

It was just the other day when I saw a lady come in to the store and eye a rather expensive leather jacket. This is one product that we diligently use RF security tags to help stop shoplifting. She looked to find her size, and tried it on. After admiring herself in the mirror, she looked back at the price tag. You could see by the look on her face that it was beyond what she wanted to pay.

She carried the jacket around the store lingering by the exits. Unfortunately for her, she got a bit too close to one of the doors and the RF security tag set off the alarm. She was so surprised; she practically threw the jacket in the air! Needless to say, she left the store in quite a hurry after that.

Without the use of Checkpoint security tags, we would have easily suffered a loss with that jacket.  I will, however, never forget the look on her face as she realized she had been caught trying to shoplift!

Anti shoplifting devices are a must for hardware items.

When I first started working Loss Prevention at a major hardware retail chain I did not expect the theft to be as rampant as it was.  I always assumed that most issues at a hardware store would be related to paperwork errors and safety claims.  I soon realized that thieves hit hardware stores in a big way.  Not only do hardware stores suffer from opportunistic thieves, but they are being targeted by Organized Retail Crime (ORC) rings and employee theft as well.  One of the biggest wins that we had in the fight against theft was utilizing anti shoplifting devices.

The major anti shoplifting device we introduced was Checkpoint security tags, which are produced by Checkpoint Systems.  Checkpoint security tags can be placed on a large variety of items.  Since most items in a hardware store are in boxes and packages the sticky Checkpoint security tags were the primary tags we used.  Checkpoint systems offers a variety of sticky tags.  The one I like the best is where you can have your logo put on the tag.  This serves two purposes.  The first is that with the Checkpoint security tags applied the door alarm would sound when someone tried to walk out without paying for product.  The second benefit is the store identifier is a great retail theft prevention mechanism for ORC.  In many jurisdictions the police can question and seize product from flea markets and small stores if the stolen property can be tracked back to the original owner and the store can prove the items are being sold below retail.

Retail theft prevention is not easy.  Since different shoplifters have different agendas and different experience it is hard to find a “one size fits all” system to prevent theft.  Checkpoint systems offer many different solutions to help customize the right solution for each business.

Stop Shoplifting With RF Technology

The retail business is littered with complications and issues that can affect the bottom line.  This can add significant stress to an already tight budget, during these difficult economic times.  Fortunately, some of these issues are preventable with the use of proper tools.  Once such issue is shoplifting.  By stopping shoplifting a retailer can limit their financial loss and create a more profitable environment.   To prevent shoplifting in your store, the use of Checkpoint labels, Checkpoint security tags, RF security labels, and RF security tags can be employed.  The use of these counter-measures discourages and eventually can stop shoplifting.

I have seen first hand the effectiveness of RF labels, RF Security labels/tags.  During my career in loss prevention, the use of this technology has greatly deterred many shoplifters and in some cases almost completely stopped shoplifting.  One company that I have worked with extensively is Checkpoint security.  The use of Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint security tags has had a positive impact for shortage reduction and safety in the stores.  The Checkpoint security tags and Checkpoint labels in the traditional fashion like most RF labels and RF security tags.  These devices give an audible notification if they are removed beyond your controlled access points.  This audible notification allows the store personnel to recover the merchandise, as well as, the RF labels and RF security tags.  This ability to recover the merchandise not only limits your theft loss, but also creates an environment that discourages shoplifting.  By preventing this type of loss, your business is better set up to run as a profitable organization.

How do you say Anti Shoplifting– Physical Security!!

Over the years of working in both large and small retailers it was always interesting to me to break down the actual shrink losses past just the dollars and overall percentages. Frequently retailers spend so much time attending to internal theft that they forget that retail theft prevention should be applied to all forms of loss. Smaller business locations seem to be the victims of this tendency.

External theft, shoplifting, can be perpetrated a variety of different ways. Regardless of the shoplifting method a business with a Checkpoint security system always has a deterrence effect upon potential shoplifters. From various post theft interviews I have conducted over the years with shoplifters I have learned that the vast majority of thieves look for the easiest target. They avoid stores with Checkpoint systems. When the potential thief sees the pedestals at the front of the store and the checkpoint security tags attached securely to product they avoid the location like a car thief avoids a car with an alarm and or the “club”. As one suspect stated “Why waste the time when I can go down the street and steal the same product from a company without any means of retail theft prevention?”.

I have to admit in all of the companies that I worked for who properly utilized the Checkpoint systems; their shrink percentage breakdown of product categories that were tagged consistently and properly with Checkpoint security tags were always lower than other companies who sold the same product and did not use any anti shoplifting tools.  Small businesses tend to believe that they either can’t afford the Checkpoint security system or that the Checkpoint system will not be cost effective. Many believe that they can handle retail theft prevention “in house” stating that their business is just to small to be on the radar of thieves. This tends to be a costly mistake. Once an inventory count has been conducted; a business owner is left with shrink loss that is compounded by the loss of the sale of the stolen product.

By no means is any anti shoplifting tool guaranteed to eliminate external theft. When you buy and employ a Checkpoint system it is important that everyone on the sales team from part timers to management are trained to properly use the checkpoint security tags on specified product, audit all product categories that have been tagged, report and investigate any defeated tags and react correctly when the Checkpoint system alarm has been activated.  Physical security using an anti shoplifting tool such as the Checkpoint security system is a must if a business is to prevent external losses via shoplifting.
