Pass Them By- Alpha Shark Tag

Not all retail anti-theft devices are integrated with EAS tags to sound an alarm. Take the Alpha Security Alpha Shark Tag for example, there is no EAS imbedded in the tag, but it is still an effective way to maintain store profits.

By design, the Alpha Shark Tag is designed to be a deterrent against customers who want to “wardrobe” an item. That means the consumer intends to buy a piece of clothing with the sole intent on wearing it once and then returning the item with a receipt for a full refund.

These purchases happen usually for special events (weddings, holiday parties, prom) and are either high end items or single wear items that a customer simply can not afford or want to keep (furs, ball gowns, tuxedos and accessories).

The Alpha Shark Tag is a small plastic tag that attaches to the front of a garment in a very conspicuous place. If the customer tries to remove the tag, they will not be able to return the item without visible damage to the tag. An unsuspecting shoplifter might bypass such an item because they assume the tags are also retail anti-theft devices there to prevent shoplifting.

The Perfect Marriage- Anti Shoplifting

When it comes to the sales of electronic devices, it has been proven over and over that when a customer can fully access a product they are more likely to purchase that item. If a product does not have a working display model that a customer can use, they will find a different retailer that does. That does not mean that you need to forego anti shoplifting so your customers can try out a display model.
The Atlas Display allows for such a marriage to stop shoplifting while enabling customer access.
The Atlas works with tablets, mobile phones, cameras, GPS devices and MP3 players. System provides power to merchandise so shoppers have the full experience. Security is monitored through multiple trigger points.
The internal alarm and flashing LED indicates if product is tampered with while the back-up battery maintains constant security if power is lost or power supply is interrupted. An adhesive on the base mounts securely to any flat surface without drilling holes. Programmable security key will arm or disarm system — up to 20 keys can be programmed for each stand. Backed by a global service and support network. Compliments Alpha Security’s line of S3 solutions.
Anti shoplifting and customer access combines seamlessly with the Alpha Security Atlas Displays.

Follow The Big Guys- Alpha Shark Tags

A recent news release brought an under acknowledged retail secret to light. That secret is wardrobing.
Wardrobing is the practice of buying an item, wearing that item once for a special occasion, and then returning the item for full purchased price.
In this news article one of the larger retail chains, whose product lines include designer and higher priced items, made a very public statement regarding the practice of wardrobing retail.
They announced that in an effort to combat this practice, they would be adding wardrobing tags to their lines of security measures. These black tags are affixed to the front of a garment. Attached to this tag is a paper card of instructions on how to remove the tag. The instructions also state that without the tag still on, the garment cannot be returned.
The point that this retailer is trying to make is to stop the likelihood of a customer wearing the product only one time before returning it. By having a big, unsightly tag on the front of an outfit, the user will be less inclined to wear that particular item out in public. If they can’t wear it, they (in turn) will be less likely to buy the item in the first place.
If they are less likely to buy the item, then the wardrobing tags are doing their job of discouraging the wardrobing retail practice.

How Did You Get Here? – Loss Prevention Workshop

At a recent Loss Prevention Workshop, several Loss Prevention professionals talked about their recent promotions and how they got to those positions. While I would have thought that they would have credited their success to things like employee theft resolution or uncovering a significant shoplifting ring, they had other reasons for their success.

One of the best pieces of advice they gave, is something I have stressed in my own personal career for many years. At this loss prevention training class, they spoke about the importance of learning other areas of the company or business outside of just loss prevention. It was a critical factor in their success stories.

It is so important, because it shows your respect for those other areas. It is nearly impossible to try and guide or confer with another department if you don’t have any knowledge of their responsibilities and processes.

It is also important to broaden your horizons. The more you know about the full circle of your business, the stronger you are as a manager or a key player, just as these professionals did.

The same thing goes for those out there that are going to loss prevention seminars to broaden their own horizons. The more you know about different areas of a business, the better off you will be.

Close The Window – Clothing Security Tags

Over the years I have seen a common problem with clothing security tags. Luckily this particular issue has a very simple remedy. The problem is attaching the clothing security tags on properly to bulky winter coats.

Often, when I do a spot check of these items, I find that the Checkpoint tags were not snapped down far enough. Sometimes the bulky of the coat makes it hard to determine that the tag is accurately secured. When it is not, there is an open window in our clothing security.

When checked, you will find that the pin is attached to the base of the tag. However, the pin is not completely engaged into the locking mechanism. That means anyone can detach the tags simply by giving the two sides a good pull. They will detach without damage to the tag or the outerwear.

To fix this, simply give the Checkpoint tags an extra push down. The pins in the tag will click and snap completely shut. This way they are not easily wiggled loose because the pin was not completely engaged.

By doing minimal additional training with your store employees, you should greatly reduce these discrepancies. The unintentional window will be shut and your coats will once again have the proper level of clothing security.

Product Demonstrations- Anti Shoplifting

To allow a customer to be fully immersed and hands on with electronic merchandise, retail theft prevention tools need to be used to secure a working display. When the customer can put their hands on the product, the customer is more likely to buy it. A working display lets the customer compare sizes, weights, and other functional capabilities of the item.
When anti shoplifting programs lock those items up and prevents demonstrations, a customer is more likely to pass on that purchase.
The Atlas system is a fully contained system that allows customers to use the display and still keep it secured. Because the Atlas display stand incorporates all of the components in its base, there is no need to drill into existing counters, or can be used on a glass display case. The internal alarm also has a flashing light that shows if it has been tampered with: a powerful deterrent to stop shoplifting.
The Atlas is appropriate for use with electronics like tablets, GPS, cameras, mobile phones and MP3 players.
This means that your employees are less concerned with retail theft prevention and more focused on product demonstrations. They know the Atlas displays will stop shoplifting and still allow customers to use the product.

Who Has The Money? – Security Tags on Clothes

When times are good and parents have more disposable income, they are more willing to spend money on name brand items of clothing. As times get harder and money is tighter, the same drive to purchase these items decreases. That doesn’t mean you need to lie off of your clothing security. Just because there is a decrease in desire to buy the clothing, doesn’t mean there is a decrease in desire for the clothing
What we end up seeing is a combination of one of two events. The first is the martyr syndrome. Well meaning parents spend what little income they can on their kids. They feel that they must be taken care of before the parent’s own needs. Because they still have their own list of wants that they are unable to afford, these parents might turn to theft to supplement their own wants.
The flip side is that when a parent’s cash runs short, teens and tweens (who rely on their parents for spending cash) are left without. That means the designer jeans and fashionable accessories are not as easy to come by.
Both groups can succumb to their own personal pressures and turn to theft. Security tags on clothes are an effective deterrent as neither of these groups is willing to risk too much effort for fear of getting caught.

CableLok – Alpha Security

Within the Alpha Security family of products to prevent shoplifting, Alpha 2 Alarm and Alpha 3 Alarm are not actual products but rather identifiers of the technology that is utilized. Lets take a closer look at one of their retail anti theft devices- the CableLok.
A CableLok is a portable and reusable locking system. It is an alarm base with an attached lanyard that is threaded through or around the merchandise to secure it and prevent shoplifting. The cable lanyard comes in three sizes: 6”, 48” and 72”.
There are two options of alarm systems to choose from- either the Alpha 3 Alarm or the Alpha 2 Alarm.
Standard EAS protection if a breech occurs is the first part of the Alpha 2 Alarm system. The second part provides an early warning alarm if the lock is tampered with inside of the store.
The Alpha 3 Alarm incorporates those same functionalities. Additionally, the third alarm is the 95 dBA self alarm if the lock and merchandise is removed from the store. The long lasting lithium battery, flashing light and visible speaker are standard on both models of the CableLok.
So the Alpha 2 Alarm and the Alpha 3 Alarm are not the actual retail anti theft devices. They are the alarming parts of the products like the Alpha Security CableLok.

Feeling Short Changed? – Liquor Bottle Security

EASy Bottle (Alpha Security bottle locks) is an effective deterrent against product sampling and shoplifting. If those are the only two ways your store is incurring inventory losses, you are probably covered by your liquor bottle security.
If you are having other unexplained shortages and you are sure that your liquor bottle security has the front of the house covered, then maybe you should start to investigate losses from the receiving end of things.
While shoplifters are always the first thought when it comes to how inventory shrink occurs, it is by far not the only way. In fact, it is easier and more common that vendors and employees will cause the biggest financial losses your liquor store will incur.
One of the easiest ways a vendor can steal from you is by overstating the quantities of product they are delivering. This can happen by taking a real invoice, and shorting the actual shipment that is delivered to your store.
If they leave a few cases of product on their deliver truck (and none of your employees verifies the physical received quantity) the vendor now has extra product on their truck. You will be left with an unexplained inventory shortage and they have cases of merchandise they can do with as they please.
Since they used a real invoice, their employer’s will be none the wiser since they did not leave the warehouse with extra product. It is up to you and your employees to physically verify the shipment’s invoice to the actual product delivered to your store.

System Failure- Checkpoint Systems

Nothing is more frustrating than listening to anti-shoplifting pedestals continually going off throughout the day. I take that back, one thing even more frustrating is when the alarms are false alarms. Not only are false alarms an irritant for both your customers and your store’s employees, but also it proves to be an ineffective way to stop shoplifting.

I have had many experiences with Checkpoint systems failures that are a direct result of damage done to the EAS pedestals. Sometimes the damages were deliberate as someone tried to disengage our retail theft prevention. Other times it was much more benign, a direct result of countless shopping carts banging into the pedestals on their way out the door during a busy weekend.

Sometimes it was the water from the floor cleaner that would seep into the base and disrupt the electronic components. Regardless of method, the retail theft prevention we had would be rendered null and void due to these damages interfering with the system.

Technology has improved over time. Now the Checkpoint systems are much more durable. The bases are more resistant to water or to intentional tampering. The pedestals are also now constructed from impact resistant thermoplastics. All of which helps keep the systems running when they should and eliminating more of the false alarms that were a result from system failures and damages.
