One of my managers came to me the other day because they thought they were loosing their mind. He kept having customers looking for a particular item, and when he would go to the selling shelf, he would find the entire row of product gone. As several states are making changes to their liquor laws, many liquor stores are finding out that they have to rethink their strategies on how to be successful. Many of the changes are allowing wine to be sold at other retailers. As a result, liquor stores in these states have to find a way to secure their customer base or risk loosing their wine sales. Make It Crystal Clear- Wardrobing Retail

One of the best ways to implement a change of policy is to make sure your intentions are clear- make them black and white. When you start to use Alpha Shark Tags, you want to make sure your employees and your customers are clear form the start as to what they are and what they are used for.

One Thing Leads to Another- Employee Theft Investigation

One of the best ways I have found to do an employee theft investigation is to find the beginning of a paper trail and then start to follow it. At my company, we use merchandise credits/ store credits for returns made without a receipt.
A real customer who purchases an item, loses or throws out their receipt and later needs to return that item are given a store credit/ merchandise credit. They are generally ok with this because they will either be replacing the item they are returning, or will have other shopping they can do at our store.
From an employee theft perspective, many employees who commit a fraudulent return will then be issued a merchandise credit. There is no receipt because there was never a sale to begin with. The employee will then use the credit to purchase more items. Frequently they will use their employee discount along with this credit.
That is were the paper trail begins. We track employee purchases and can also track a merchandise credit’s history. When we see an employee with the credit but no corresponding purchase history, we know something is not right.
After starting with a single merchandise credit, we can find that it will lead up to other merchandise credits that the employee uses. From there, the employee theft investigation doesn’t take long before we can figure out the pattern of what this employee is doing and how they are causing losses to our store.

After a friend’s recent college graduation ceremony, one of the grads started talking about how she is always prepared for job interviews because she buys a new outfit for each interview and then returns it. Basically she was admitting to wardrobing retail to make herself look better (and more qualified) for a job interview.
 She talked about how the hardest item to return was shoes. When you wear them outside, they immediately begin to show wear on the soles- retailers look for that at the returns desk. This is one of the biggest reasons why retailers don’t use Alpha Shark Tags on shoes to prevent wardrobing.
Everything else was pretty easy to return. She figured out that if a suit jacket has the price tag on the sleeve she could bend the plastic on the attachment and slide it carefully through the hole in the price tag. Instead of clipping the plastic piece, she pushes it back inside the sleeve for the interview.
If she wears a jacket then it will hide any tags that are in her shirt, which means she does not have to even try and take those tags off.
After she is done, she bends the plastic end back through the hole of the price tag. By doing this, the employer never sees the evidence of her scheme, and the retailer that she is returning the outfit to never suspects her of wardrobing because the tag is still attached.

Security Overkill- Retail Anti Theft Devices

Caught Red Handed- Alpha Shark Tags

Even though it is rare to catch a customer actually wearing the clothes they are attempting to return, tampered Wardrobing Tags are the next best thing to catching them in the act. Alpha Shark Tags may not be able to tell you what the customer did with the clothes after they left the store, but they can decrease the likelihood that they were worn and then returned.
