You Can’t Take It With You- Alpha 3 Alarm

Shoplifters are continually trying to beat the system. Retailers are continually trying to beat the shoplifters, and so the cycle goes. Each time a shoplifter develops a new plan, there are new retail anti theft devices to thwart them.  Unfortunately, every time there are new tools to prevent shoplifting, shoplifters begin to find ways to defeat them.
As a result of this cycle, Alpha Security has come up with a different approach to prevent shoplifting. They developed the Alpha 3 Alarm retail anti theft devices. This is an EAS tag with an extra deterrent for shoplifting.
A 1 alarm EAS tag will create an audible alarm from the door pedestals, if a tag passes through the doors without being deactivated first. Shoplifters can tamper with the tags to defeat them, or they might risk setting off the alarm and leaving with the merchandise anyway.
An Alpha 2 Alarm takes care of half the problem. The second part of the alarm is an audible directly from the EAS tag if the tag is tampered with.
The Alpha 3 Alarm takes the first two parts and adds an audible alarm directly from the EAS tag if the tag passes through the doors without being deactivated.
No longer can shoplifters take their stolen product with them without being heard everywhere they go.
Visit the Loss Prevention Store for Alpha 2Alarm, Alpha 3Alarm, Alpha Fashion2, Alpha Jewel Lok, Alpha Nano Gate,  Alpha Shark Tag, Alpha Spider Wrap and other retail anti-theft devices from Alpha Security to use in conjunction with your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system that can help you prevent shoplifting in your business.

Change Your Hiring Practices- Employee Background Checks

Many companies are successfully reducing the number of unwanted applications they need to sort through to hire for an open position within their company. An unwanted application is one that the applicant is embellishing their experience or education, padding their resume, or flat out declining (or denying) to disclose pertinent information like a criminal history.
In order to decrease these unwanted applications, companies, both large and small are starting change their hiring practices, starting by rewording their applications.
Somewhere on the application, whether it is computerized or on paper, there is wording stating that the job requires a through check to be conducted before final approval to be hired. Next is a signature line for the applicant to authorize the check to be completed.
What major hiring companies and managers are finding is that significant quantities of questionable applicants are declining to turn in their applications.
They know that they have potential red flags in their history that they do not want to come up. Instead of completing the application, they move on to the next business that does not require a background check.
In the meantime, you are left with fewer overall applications to sort through. Of those remaining applications, you are left with better overall applicants.
They are more honest about any previous criminal activity, previous work history, and can actually validate their education and degrees earned. They are not afraid of any background or criminal screenings because they have nothing to hide.

Stop The Addict- Bottle Locks

Bottle security, like bottle locks, has been proven highly effective at keeping the criminal element out of liquor stores. These bottle locks provide a strong visual deterrent that any shoplifter or crook can see the second the walk into a liquor store.
Unfortunately, alcohol in all of its forms is a potentially addicting substance. As such, addicts will often go out of their way to ignore the normal deterrents and accept the risk of getting caught for their thefts.
When I watch the evening news, the majority of the theft related stories I hear come out of liquor stores. It seem like whenever there is surveillance available, the footage seems to find their way onto the news.
Local law enforcement often uses these videos to help find a suspect. Courts will also utilize video surveillance to help them prosecute a case.
Whether the suspect is robbing the store or shoplifting from it, a solid prosecution can sometimes be more easily made when there is video surveillance available to corroborate the plaintiff’s case.
Even better than video footage, is high quality video footage. The less grainy and more detailed the picture, the better chance law enforcement has of finding a suspect and then successfully prosecuting them in a court of law.
Using Alpha Security bottle locks will help deter the normal shoplifter, but think about adding video surveillance as a part of your bottle security to help catch the addict shoplifter.
Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase EASy Bottle bottle locks by Alpha Security and your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system.

Looking Ahead- Clothing Security

Confronting a shoplifter takes more than just responding to a clothing alarm and throwing out a wild accusation. It takes actual knowledge of the crime being committed. An accusation that has no truth to it can result in a wrongful detainment lawsuit from the accused, costing an enormous sum of money and time.
Confronting or detaining a shoplifter takes an intimate knowledge of the crime. That means you have to personally witness the event. You have to know one hundred percent, undeniably, that the clothing the person has is yours, and they intended to steal it.
One of the parts of recovering the merchandise during the initial detainment is to make sure the shoplifter knows you have complete knowledge of their actions. That usually includes you stating “ I know you have Item A hidden in your bag (pocket, purse, coat, etc)”. By stating the exact item and the exact location the item was concealed, you have proven your knowledge of their theft attempt.
While some of the larger companies have access to RFID tags as a part of their clothing security, smaller business still have to rely on being an actual eyewitness to determine which specific pieces of merchandise have been concealed.
If dedicating that kind of time to reduce shoplifting losses just isn’t plausible for you, security tags on clothes are an effective deterrent. They stop losses before they even begin.

Discard the Merchandise – Alpha 3 Alarm

When a shoplifter feels like they have been caught, they can do a number of things, from running away, fighting, or even discarding the merchandise. When we look for solutions to prevent shoplifting, we look for ways to let the shoplifter feel like they have been caught.
Ultimately, we are trying to get the shoplifter to discard our merchandise without further incident. Trying to make a detention can be problematic, and can end up costing more money and resources if the case is pushed through the court system for prosecution.
When we employ Alpha 3 Alarm retail anti theft devices as part of our strategy, we are creating a situation where the shoplifters benefit by discarding the product on their own.
When the shoplifter leaves the store with an Alpha Security Alpha 3 Alarm protected product, the exit doors alarm, so do the actual retail anti theft devices attached to the merchandise. Even if the shoplifter continues to leave with the merchandise, there is an audible alarm on the product- making it impossible for the shoplifter not to be noticed.
They will discard the product, which allows the retailer to follow the sound until they find and retrieve the merchandise. All without further incident or risk of conflict.

Rise In The Cost of Goods- Internal Theft

I had an internal theft situation where the employee was taking cash at the end of her shift almost every night. She would search through the journal tape to find cash transactions that had happened earlier in the day. Then she would refund a few of those transactions, and keep the cash.
It wasn’t until we noticed an increase in our cost of goods that we started to see all of the refunds for cash. She had become so comfortable, that she would refund a few hundred dollars every shift that she worked causing thousands of dollars in losses.
When employees devise complex or elaborate schemes to cover their tracks, it makes it far more difficult to pinpoint the exact losses that are occurring. There is rarely a shortage in the cash till that shows up as a red flag. Sometimes the cash theft actually leaves an overage in the drawer.
These internal theft cases are ones that eventually get caught but only after they have become so comfortable in their theft that their methods begin to show up on our radar screens.
If you suspect that an employee is stealing cash from you, an employee theft investigation should be started as soon as possible. Cash theft can quickly escalate if it is not detected and resolved as soon as possible.

Is This The Answer? – Wardrobing Tags

Are Wardrobing Tags really the answer to solve the problem of refund fraud in your store? Yes. Yes they are. Wardrobing tags, or more specifically Alpha Shark Tags are an easy and comprehensive way to determine if a refund should be taken.
If the Alpha Shark Tags is still on and un-tampered with, then there shouldn’t be a reason to suspect wardrobing. However, to really put an end to wardrobing retail and other more costly forms of refund fraud, there needs to be another action plan put into place.
When you clarify your return policy, customers have a better chance of understanding what they can and cannot do even before a purchase is made. It is easier to retain your customer base when they understand what the ground rules are. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to make a legitimate return, only to find out that the store will not allow it.
That means you need to make sure your return policy is clear and concise, while still protecting your inventory. A few examples are to start with posting your return policy in writing where the customer can see it. You can reinforce this by printing it on the back of the receipt, or adding a second attachment that has the return policy on it.
Secondly educate your employees to educate your customers. Have them verbally explain the policy as the customer is making their purchase. This is especially crucial if they are buying something that has special return considerations like a shortened time frame or all items must be in their original packaging.

Make Your Employee’s Lives Easier- Retail Anti Theft Devices

As business owners and managers, we understand the correlation between an employee’s productivity and their overall work- life happiness. As an employer, we often find ourselves going out of our way to make their lives easier to make them happier- hopefully making them more engaged and loyal employees. It doesn’t cross our minds that an employee’s happiness can also prevent shoplifting.
Even one of the world’s premier developers of retail anti theft devices, Alpha Security, will readily admit that their products are only as good as the employees who use them.
If you are going to use retail anti theft devices as a shoplifting deterrent, they will only be effective if the devices actually make it onto the merchandise. They will do no good left in a box in the stockroom. It takes employees to attach the devices onto the merchandise.
When an employee is happy and engaged in their job, they are more likely to commit their time to seemingly mundane tasks like EAS tagging and compliance. A happy employee will go above and beyond to ensure the tagging is done correctly, and to the completion level you are looking for.

Mixed Media Production- Checkpoint Security Systems

I worked for a company that had slowly been integrating their retail theft prevention over the course of several years. They had minimal finances to spare to stop shoplifting, but knew they needed to have as much as possible.

They would progressively add a camera here and a recording device there. Not much matched as far as brands, or systems go. It was very much a conglomerate of mixed media fixtures.

Eventually, the company signed on with Checkpoint Security System to install and maintain the door towers and the Checkpoint tags they were investing in. Since the contract with Checkpoint Security System also included a service contract for their camera system they thought they were completely covered.

The Checkpoint tags were pretty low maintenance, and the door towers had minimal issues beyond the annual servicing and testing. Where there were problems was with the camera systems.

As they would slowly break down, we discovered that Checkpoint Systems was very limited on what they could do to repair them. Because most of the cameras had been bought at a discount, they were off brands with limited warranties.

The end result was that we spent more to replace the camera systems with authorized Checkpoint Systems products. Had we spent the money initially on the Checkpoint Security Systems, we would not have had to pay for the cameras and components twice.

Finding The Appropriate Text- Library Theft Prevention

As more Barnes and Noble stores are getting into college campus settings, they are replacing many of the bookstores that used to be run by the college or university. As such, they bring with them the wealth of knowledge to operate with financial efficiency, and their library theft prevention techniques and strategies.
Many campus- run bookstores simply had a hard time maintaining them financially. The lack of Checkpoint Systems created too much of a financial struggle to replace stolen textbooks and supplies. A larger retailer who has a system in place can deter a large amount of theft, making the store profitable and the college as well.
Textbooks currently can be as much as six or seven hundred dollars. Some students, who cannot afford their pricey class textbooks, have turned to the campus library as a resource. The problem is that libraries don’t typically loan out a textbook for an entire semester.
So what option do these students have?
Many of them turn to theft. Since libraries without any library theft detection system make for an easy target, students low on cash may turn to the library to steal their textbooks from. As more campus bookstores equip themselves with Checkpoint Systems, libraries become more vulnerable to student theft that normally would have occurred at the bookstore instead of at the library.
