Bottle Locks Shut Down Shoplifter Opportunities

Bottle locks put the cap on retail liquor business’ shoplifting losses by reducing the opportunity to successfully get away with the goods.

Liquor retailers who are fed up with losing merchandise – especially high value high theft merchandise – to shoplifters have turned to bottle security in the form of the Alpha Security bottle lock to protect their inventory investment.

In a perfect world, no liquor bottle security would be necessary.  Unfortunately, there are “customers” who are under age, or addicted, under the influence, or greedy, or under the impression that someone else’s property belongs to them by entitlement, so in order for the wine and spirits retailer to remain in business bottle locks are an effective means of preventing theft.

The EASy Bottle lock, for example, is secured tightly on top of the bottle so that the bottle top can’t be removed.  The only way the bottle cap can be removed is by a special key that only store employees can access.  Attempting to remove the bottle security without the key will frustrate the would- be thief in that the only way to access the contents of the bottle is by breaking the top off.  Breaking the top off will ruin the product and deny its use to the thief.

Frustration for the shoplifter means the end of frustration for the shopkeeper, at least as far as finding his hard earned profit has walked out the door in the booster bag of a liquor thief, or walking the aisles and finding empty space where stock should be, and there are no sales recorded for the items.

The EASy Bottle lock has the added feature of containing an EAS device that can be detected as it passes through anti shoplifting systems at the exits.  The systems emit an alarm when they detect the cap attached to the merchandise.

Bottle locks can take at least one frustration away from liquor store owners.

Clothing security made fashionable. What???

Yep.  I said it.  Clothing security can be fashionable.  We all know that in this day and age you have to put security tags on clothes in order to protect your inventory.  One of the major downsides though is how it looks.  We work in sales and sales are all about looks.  That is why Checkpoint tags come in so many different sizes and shapes.

You can always get the trusty hard clothing security tags.  But that does not look that great and can make trying clothes on hard, depending on the product.  There are now a variety of sizes in hard clothing security tags that make them less noticeable and do not impede the “trying on” process.  In addition, Checkpoint tags now can be sewn inside the product.  Many retailers are using this for their high end product.  The Checkpoint tags are “soft tags” and they are inside a small piece of cloth and sewn beside the size tag or cleaning instructions.  The customer’s don’t even notice they are there.  The clothes look great on the mannequins or rack, but your EAS will still alert you if someone is trying to steal the product.

Whatever clothing security solution you use is up to you, but know that putting security tags on clothes no longer has to be a trade-off for sales.

Is It Possible to Prevent Shoplifting In Your Stores?

Yes. It is very possible to prevent shoplifting in your stores. Shoplifting is a nuisance and if left unchecked, can ruin a business. So what can be done to prevent shoplifting in your stores?

Retailers have been battling shoplifting for many, many years. Of these years of battle, retailers can agree that shoplifting may never go away completely, but there certainly are ways to prevent shoplifting from occurring and greatly reduce the amount of loss incurred. An effective method of control or preventing loss is by using retail anti theft devices. You have the merchandise in your stores, you have the employees to work and make sales, now you need to retail anti theft devices to help prevent shoplifting, boost your profits and promote your business growth.

In a discount clothing chain I once worked for, the stores were reluctant to incorporate retail anti theft devices initially, because they did not want to spend the money on the investment. What this told me was they were not sold on the effectiveness of the retail anti theft devices available on the market. My job was clear, I had to show results. I talked an owner into testing some of these retail anti theft devices on merchandise considered high theft, or high shrink and we would monitor the sales and shrink over the next 30 days. It was pretty simple. In fact, the security devices we used, impacted theft so distinctly within the first week, the owner was encouraged to roll out a store wide program.

It certainly is possible to prevent shoplifting in your stores. It takes dedication, the right tools and a plan to execute. In the long run, if you stick to your plan you will certainly see an impact on shrink and theft in your stores.

Reasonable Measures Taken Using RF Labels

Reasonable measures to stop shoplifting are those that will give a retailer a return on his investment and stop his profits from walking out the door, like using RF security labels and RF security tags on merchandise that is vulnerable to customer theft.

Every retailer experiences inventory shrink; it is a retail business fact of life.  The trick is to balance economic preventive measures with acceptable merchandising methods.

In some high crime areas, customers expect and understand merchandise that is under lock and key or behind glass.  In others, such means to protect merchandise would be over the top and turn shoppers off, as they expect to be able to handle and inspect the goods, as they are able to do with merchandise protected by Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint security tags.

One of the less obtrusive retail electronic devices designed to stop shoplifting is the Checkpoint Security System.  The system stands quietly at the entrance until it is needed.  When it detects active RF security tags or RF security labels on clothing or other merchandise that leaving the store unpaid, it alerts store personnel with an audible alarm.

The Checkpoint security tags and RF labels come in a variety of shapes and sizes for almost any application or type of merchandise.  Your and your employees’ eyes can’t be on every shopper all the time, but a Checkpoint Security System is always on.

The return on investment of a Checkpoint Security System using RF labels or RF tags is remarkably fast.  Not only will it alert staff to unsold merchandise going out the door, but also the prevention factor alone is a value in itself.

The greater the risk of being caught, the greater the chance that a shoplifter will avoid a protected store and go to an easier target.

Checkpoint Systems with RF security labels and RF security tags can greatly enhance your efforts to control or stop shoplifting at your business.

Retail theft prevention is more than just a quick fix, but it is possible.

Most everyone is familiar with anti shoplifting devices such as EAS tags.  Hopefully, you are familiar with Checkpoint systems product, the Checkpoint security tags.  Many still don’t really have an understanding of how the Checkpoint security tags can really fight professional shoplifters and Organized Retail Crime rings.  Here is an example of how a fully functioning Checkpoint security system can work for retail theft prevention.

I had a store using Checkpoint systems.  One day the EAS alarm activated and the clerk looked up just in time to see a professional booster running out of the door with stolen product.  Now I already hear the questions.  If they got away where’s the retail theft prevention?  Keep reading.  In addition to the Checkpoint security tags, the store also had the Checkpoint systems CCTV system.  They were able to go back on the DVR to find the shoplifter entering and get a good picture of his face.  Management then showed the video to all of the employees and asked that they contact management if they saw that person.

Naturally, since the shoplifter was so successful the first time, he came back about a week later.  The cashier saw the perp enter the store and immediately called the manager.  The manager used the Checkpoint systems camera to verify that it was, in fact, the same guy and observed the shoplifter starting to conceal merchandise.  The manager went ahead and notified the PD who headed that way.  As the shoplifter attempted to leave this time the Checkpoint security system alarm sounded and the manager approached the shoplifter to ask for a receipt.  As the guy started to flea he ran right into the waiting arms of the police and was promptly taken to jail.

It sometimes takes work to build your case, but the right anti shoplifting devices make the job a lot easier when properly used.

Alpha Security Wins Praises from The Little Guy

That’s right. Working in the field for many years has given me a rather personal relationship with Alpha Security products. I have had a much successful career recommending Alpha security products to various retailers who have put them to good use.

In particular, the placement of liquor bottle security in grocery stores and deploying EASy bottle locks to help quell would- be theft, has proven not only to me but those using the bottle locks that this kids of gear is well worth the investment.

The first time I had seen a bottle lock, I was a little skeptical and maybe even under educated about their purpose. These bad boys were designed to deter thieves by mere sight and offer tough protection against those that weren’t put off. I spent the time learning more about these products from Alpha Security and really took hold of these liquor bottle security devices. I was impressed and not easily, mind you.

Working for a retailer that sells liquor can be a tough spot. Protection of merchandise, implementation of bottle security, prevention of theft and loss is expected. I made the recommendations to install liquor bottle locks on all merchandise and to put EASy bottle locks on merchandise that had never really displayed before. The owners wanted more information on how this type of bottle lock and bottle security worked, in fact they too seemed a little skeptical about liquor bottle security. None the less, I got my way and we installed a bottle lock on all merchandise in the liquor aisle or department. Recently, one store had been experiencing heavy loss, assumedly by shoplifters, finding large sections missing. After installing the bottle locks, the store saw an immediate decrease in theft.

It may have taken years for me to figure it out, but an investment into merchandise protection and liquor bottle security will pay off, big time.

Prevent Organized Retail Crime with Clothing Security

A common practice amongst thieves is theft for resale. Organized retail crime impacts our businesses more than we sometimes realize, and businesses that sell clothing are not exempt. Groups of shoplifters have been known to enter businesses, grab handfuls of merchandise, and exit quickly without making an attempt to conceal the crime. Speed is the tool that they use to try and make their quick getaway.

Clothing security can help prevent these types of crimes. Having a clothing alarm, such as Checkpoint tags, can make shoplifters nervous that extra attention may be drawn to their crimes. Removing clothing security tags after the theft is extremely difficult also, as Checkpoint tags require a key for removal. Your employees can remove the clothing security tags easily at the time the merchandise is purchased, but shoplifters do not want to have to fight for hours to remove them from the merchandise they have stolen.

Having clothing security also includes merchandising your items in such a way to minimize theft. Make sure that high theft, highly sought after merchandise is not located right near the entrance and exits of your business. High theft merchandise should also be located in an area where employees can monitor it. Employees should also be taught to provide good customer service to keep your honest customers coming back, and to deter the shoplifters from stealing.

Security tags on clothes are a recommended option to protect your merchandise from those that wish to steal it. Checkpoint tags are a visual deterrent to shoplifters, and can be just convincing enough to encourage the shoplifters to move on to a business that does not have clothing security.

Retail anti theft devices that do more than stop theft.

There are many different retail anti theft devices on the market today.  One set of products that I absolutely have fallen in love with are the Safer Cases from Alpha.  These products do more than just prevent shoplifting.  They also add a positive visual aesthetic to your shelf presentation; which, from a merchandising standpoint is great for sales.

These retail anti theft devices are hard plastic boxes that you can lock your boxed or package products in.  They are great because the customer can still handle the product and read the product information without having to wait on an associate to unlock a case for them.  Once at the register the cashier has a key to unlock the Safer case and ring the product up.  It can prevent shoplifting by keeping a shoplifter from being able to easily conceal the product.  In addition, there is a sensor tag built into the lid of the case that will activate the existing EAS alarm if someone tries to steal the product.

As for visual aesthetics they make the product look great and make the shelves look full.  One problem with that most stores face is the issue of putting out too much of a high theft product because they don’t want the shelves to look empty.  This sets them up for Organized Retail Crime rings to wipe out a large amount of product at one time since it was all sitting out.  The Safer cases do take up a little room, but that is good as it adds depth to the shelf.  You can get away with having just a few items out to purchase without looking like you are going out of business.  Additionally, it makes it easy to keep items in odd shaped packages neat and orderly.  In the boxes everything lines up in nice crisp rows that really add an organized look to the shelf.

This Just In: The World is Not Square

Come to find out, the world is indeed round. Not only is this great big planet we live in not square but also the majority of items in this world are also not square.

While the notion that you were not aware that the earth is round is ridiculous, what you might not know is that not all RF labels are square.

Several years ago the people at Checkpoint had a brilliant revelation that not all the products being tagged had squared off edges. Since this flash of genius these folks have created a plethora of different Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint Security Tags to help retailers tag items that don’t fit the generic inch and a half square mold.

In my personal opinion, the best RF label they have is a round label that is about an inch in diameter. This RF label can be applied to the bottom of medicine bottles, almost anything in health and beauty care or any other item that might have caused an issue with standard RF security labels. Not to mention that in a lot of cases it is also more aesthetically pleasing.

For the retailer looking for a more sleek and sexy design, Checkpoint labels also offer a clear polyurethane label that can be placed directly over a barcode. This allows you to place RF security labels on items without having to cover up any instructions or ingredients that are listed on the packaging.

These are just a couple of the many different RF security tags that are offered to help you stop shoplifting from occurring in your business.

The evolution of Checkpoint security tags.

I remember when I first started working in Loss Prevention.  The company I worked for used Checkpoint security tags.  It was a hardlines retailer so we primarily used the “soft” Checkpoint labels.  These were stickers with a barcode printed on them so they looked like a product UPC.  In fact, on the bottom of the sticker was the Radio Frequency lining that made these RF security labels sound the door alarms when the product was stolen.

These are great and can still be used today.  In addition, there are many other RF security labels and RF security tags than can be used to accomplish the same task, which is to stop shoplifting.  In addition, to the standard sticker RF labels, you can now get Checkpoint labels that are built into the hang tags of your merchandise.  The RF label is actually built inside of the tag and most shoplifters don’t even know.  You can also get Checkpoint labels that are sewn into the clothes themselves if you work in softlines.

Most softline retailers rely on hard RF security tags.  For this you can still get a variety of Checkpoint security tags.  There are now a half dozen different sizes and shapes for RF security tags so you can find the right tag for each different type of product.  You can also get Checkpoint security tags that have ink inside that “pop” if a shoplifter tries to remove the tag without the proper device.

It has always been a challenge to stop shoplifting, but RF security tags and RF security labels have come a long way to help with this struggle.
