Prevent shoplifting with the help of Alpha security.

Up until recently there had been two major players in the “retail anti theft devices” game.  With the introduction of Alpha security there is now another major play in this game and they are hitting it out of the park.  Alpha security is a leader in innovative retail anti theft devices that not only prevent shoplifting, but also keep the focus high on sales.

There are several advantages to the retail anti theft devices from Alpha security.  One is they are sturdy and last.  No one wants to continue to replace security devices.  You expect to buy them and reuse them for a while and these products can stand the test of time.  Another benefit is the many types of products.  Here are some of the items offered.  First are sensor tags.  You can get traditional tags and you can get tags with an alarm built in that will sound when tapered with or removed from the building.  (It’s easy to explain setting off the door alarm, but hard to explain that alarm going off in your pocket).

Keeper cases are also a great choice.  These are hard portable cases you can lock the product in.  Unlike a display case, the customer can pick up the item themselves and take it to the register.  Spider wraps serve a similar function.  For items too big for the keeper cases you can use these wraps to attach an alarmed device to the product.  Like the S3 alarm sensor tags, an alarm will sound if tampered with or removed from the building.

The benefit to the keeper cases and spider wraps is you can openly display your product which is much more conducive for sales as customers hate having to wait for an associate to get something for them from a locked display case.

Security Labels- the best hidden deterrent

In order for one to stop shoplifting, preventive measures must exist. Checkpoint labels like: checkpoint security tags, RF labels, RF security labels and RF security tags help deter and eventually stop shoplifting.

Checkpoint labels or RF labels can be small devices or stickers that can easily be hidden or made obvious on items of clothing, electronics, or other high or low dollar merchandise. Some RF labels can even be sewn into clothing disguised as a garment tag; which tricks the potential shoplifter into thinking there are no RF security tags. What better way than to trick or stop a shoplifter from stealing than to fool them with a hidden RF label.

Once I apprehended a shoplifter under the assumption that they could just walk out of my store wearing a high dollar sweater. I had noticed her walk towards the sweaters in just a t-shirt. Well because it was a little chilly outside, an opportunity to get warm quick, I could tell was on her mind. She seemed to be looking for a sweater that had no RF security labels or RF security tags. After a few try-ons, the customer noticed a sweater that did not have any checkpoint security tags instead it had a sewn in RF label, appearing to be the garment tag. The “customer” was obviously unaware of this hidden RF label.

Long story short, she left what she thought was free of checkpoint security tags sweater on and walked out the door. While walking out she set off the checkpoint security alarm tower that recognizes security tags left on items. Of course, this was a shock to her because she thought she had a found an item with no checkpoint labels.

RF security labels are the best deterrent when you can’t always be present. They keep an honest man honest. And they keep a potential shoplifter aware of your no tolerance for theft.  You can rest easy also knowing that even when opportunity may arise for a customer to become a shoplifter a hidden RF label will stop shoplifting at the door.

Employee theft of gift cards. Have you considered it??

Recently I had to conduct an employee theft investigation involving gift cards.  Gift cards are great, but they are just one more way we as retailers can lose money.  Generally gift card theft is an internal theft (or employee theft) problem more than an external theft (shoplifting) problem.  The reason is simple.  Most all gift cards have to be rung into the register in order to be active and shoplifters cannot do this, but employees can.

Here is one internal theft gift card case I just wrapped up today.  A few days ago I got a call from a store manager informing me of a cash shortage of $100.  As we all know, mistakes usually don’t come in even dollar amounts like this.  This typically means someone stole Big Ben.  I started the employee theft investigation like normal and went straight to the “No Sales” and watched the video looking for cash theft.  When I did not find any I looked at the “Opening” and “Closing” of that till for cash theft.  Still nothing.  Here is where cash investigations get fun – NOT!!  I started looking at each transaction on the Electronic Journal to see if anything stuck out.

I noticed a $50 gift card paid for with $50 in cash.  That struck me as a little odd because usually I see a birthday card or something else in the purchase.  I made the mental note and kept going.  Several transactions later I saw another $50 gift card for the same store.  This too was paid in even cash and no other purchases.  Now we’re getting somewhere.

Sure enough when I watched video I saw the employee on both cases scan a gift card with no customer present, pocket the card and put no money in the drawer.  Cash theft is a major employee theft problem, but when doing an employee theft investigation don’t forget about the other tender types as well.

You Are Not an Easy Target with Checkpoint Systems

Shoplifters that steal for resale are looking for that easy target; that business that allows the opportunity for shoplifting to occur. Without the opportunity, there cannot be successful shoplifting theft, so reducing that opportunity is a primary factor in retail theft prevention.

Anti shoplifting techniques also have to provide the shoplifter with attention that he or she does not want. Shoplifters not only have to have the opportunity to steal from your business – they have to go unnoticed when they steal your merchandise. So giving customers attention by providing good customer service can go far in reducing theft.

There are tools available to use in your anti shoplifting crusade for your business. Checkpoint Security system has tags that affix to your high theft merchandise that can be a deterrent to the potential shoplifter. Checkpoint security tags are easily attached but hard to remove by a shoplifter. When the item is purchased, the tags are easily removed with a key by your employees. Checkpoint security tags can then be reused on other high theft and high ticket merchandise that you wish to display.

Organized retail crime, which includes shoplifters stealing for resale of your merchandise, can be hard to combat. These groups are often familiar with anti shoplifting techniques and other methods of retail theft prevention. However, these groups know that businesses with Checkpoint Security tags can be difficult to steal from, and Checkpoint systems can be enough of a deterrent to send the shoplifters on to the next business. Protecting your business and its assets with anti shoplifting devices is the best way to maximize profits while sending a message – that you are serious about retail theft prevention. Don’t be that easy target that the organized shoplifters want to frequent.

Bottle up your savings with Alpha security.

If your store sales alcohol then you know what a nightmare shoplifting is.  It’s almost enough to drive you to … well, drink yourself.  My suggestion is turn to Alpha security and not AA to solve this particular problem.  Bottle security will always be a problem in this genre of retail.  Whether you need liquor bottle security or bottle security for expensive wines and spirits; Alpha Security has you covered.

There are several benefits to using EASy bottle bottle locks on your product.  For one, the bottle lock prevents the contents (and your profits) from being drained by capping the bottle.  Secondly, EASy bottle locks work with your existing EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance) systems to alert you of possible theft.  One thing I have learned in my many years of Loss Prevention is that if someone gets away with product once, they will be back.  While we count on bottle security to deter theft (which it will do in many cases) I like knowing that after the alarm is activated I can find out who was stealing.  That means next time I am ready and the police will be on speed dial as soon as that person comes back into the store.

Another great aspect of using the bottle lock provided by Alpha security is the ability to openly display your product.  Before you would never consider putting $200 Cristal on the shelf because you know if would go missing in a hurry.  Now you can safely put the product in the customer’s hands and hopefully in their shopping carts thanks to this type of bottle security.

Whether you are a package store needing liquor bottle security or just a grocery store looking to secure your wine, Alpha Security is a name you need to know.

Woven labels. A must for high end clothing security.

High end boutiques are a constant target for theft.  In today’s market that holds even more truth.  Many have been negatively impacted by the recession, but still want to hold on to their old lifestyle.  That means taking the products they can’t afford to buy.  The result is retailers are forced to utilize a clothing alarm and put security tags on clothes in order to protect their product.  The problem is that many high end boutiques don’t want standard clothing security tags on their products.  Now even high society retailers have a tailored clothing security option.

Checkpoint tags can be woven into the product.  This is accomplished by having the manufacturer install a small fabric label that contains Checkpoint tags into the product.  This can go anywhere you want.  I have mostly seen them used by the cleaning instructions or existing size tag.  It is not noticeable.  It does not require putting a hole in the product like a standard hard tag.  It can be used on almost any type of fabric.  And best of all, it still provides the clothing security you need.

Shoplifters will see the clothing alarm when they walk in the door and know that you use security tags on clothes so the deterrent effect is still in place.  For those who try to steal the clothing alarm will alert you and still give you the ability to react.  You also get the visual aesthetics of not seeing the clothing security tags which many high end retailers really want.  Additionally, you won’t have to worry about your cashiers forgetting to remove a sensor from the product and your customer having to come back before they can use the product.  It’s a win all the way around.

Retail anti theft devices continue to sell for a reason. They work!!!

Who buys products that don’t work?  The answer is, “No one”.  What business invests in equipment that doesn’t work?  Again, the answer is “None”.  The point I hope to get across is that in most all major business you will find retail anti theft devices.  The reason you will find them everywhere is because they work well to prevent shoplifting.

I hear a lot of business leaders question the effectiveness of retail anti theft devices.  This is surprising to me as many are from my own company and we have shown repeatedly how effective these devices are to prevent shoplifting.  Here is a recent example of how I got to prove my point to a particularly skeptical Store Manager that I have.

We use EAS tags on a lot of our boxed products.  This particularly goes for cosmetics, razors and other health and beauty products.  I was teaching a new LP agent how to catch shoplifters and we had noticed during our walk that only about half of the high dollar products were properly tagged.  Not too long after that we observed a shoplifter on the Health and Beauty aisle.  It was comical as we watched, because he picked up the highest dollar product, saw it was tagged and put it back.  He then did the same with the two price levels lower and finally found a price level not tagged and then attempted to steal that line.  It was clear how he wasn’t about to take the tagged product and had he not found any untagged I know he would have gone to the store across the street and tried there.  It was a perfect example to share with that manager just how impactful retail anti theft devices are to prevent shoplifting.

Reducing Losses with Checkpoint Labels

With a tough economy, retailers are looking for ways to stop shoplifting without sinking all of their profits into the effort. Shoplifting takes away from our profits and is a frustrating cost of doing business. It is not a cost that you have to suffer without being able to do something to reduce it.

Checkpoint security tags and RF labels can go far to help reduce shoplifting in your business. Both can be affixed to your high theft merchandise, and an alarm will sound if the merchandise goes near your doors without being purchased. Knowing that this is a possibility can deter many shoplifters that do not want to take the chance of drawing unwanted attention.

RF security labels work on a radio frequency in order to alert your employees. They are deactivated at your registers when purchased in order to prevent false alarms. Your employees are trained to react to the alarms appropriately, as well as how to deactivate them properly at your registers. The RF label is a simple yet effective way to help stop shoplifting within your business, convincing shoplifters that yours is not a business to steal from.

Checkpoint labels are an industry leader in the loss prevention world and along with their reputation is the knowledge that you are doing something to help stop shoplifting in your business. RF labels can help get you on the right track to increasing the profits and reducing the loss. These along with a good loss prevention program, excellent customer service, and well trained employees can keep your business competitive for years to come.

Employee theft investigations are so easy anyone can do them.

Just kidding.  The fact is a proper employee theft investigation is quite difficult and time consuming.  Sure you could just pull your associates in and start making accusations, but did you know there is a large amount of liability in that?  If you can’t back up the claim you may be setting yourself up for even more loss.

Employee theft, or internal theft, is a common problem that all businesses face.  From fast food to clothing retail to doctors and lawyers; employee theft is a problem.  There are a few solutions available however.

The first, and the one I recommend, is to use a trained Loss Prevention Professional to conduct you employee theft investigation.  If you have the budget to keep a LP Professional on staff then you are ahead of the curve.  This person can be utilized to detect and catch shoplifting, internal theft as well as paperwork errors and other causes of shrink.  If you don’t have the budget, or aren’t quite sold on staffing your own LP Professional, then you can rent one.  There are companies who staff and train LP Professionals and then contract them out to retailers large and small when there is a need.  One benefit to this is reduced liability on your part as the contract company is responsible for their employee.  The reason I push this concept so hard is the training involved in doing a quality employee theft investigation.  Do you know how to read body language?  Are you familiar with the concepts of Neurolinguistics?  Do you know how to properly obtain a confession for all dishonest activity, including things you had no idea about?  The answer to these questions is probably “no”.  These are some of the things that a trained LP Professional has spent time studying and know.

The second option is to get the training yourself.  However you choose to run you business is … well, your business.  I just recommend that a trained person conduct internal theft investigations in order to do the job right.

Retail theft prevention or anti-shoplifting methods should take priority when it comes to running your business successfully.  Your customers and potential shoplifters must be aware of your checkpoint systems, checkpoint security tags and no tolerance policies and procedures for theft.

How do you prevent 100% discounts?  With retail theft prevention and anti-shoplifting methods, you can say good-bye to the five finger discount. A checkpoint security system can monitor your assets when you’re not always able to.  Who better to watch your property than the latest Checkpoint Security system equipment? Even if thieves think they can get around the equipment you can use the Checkpoint System CCTV program as evidence when filing a theft or burglary report.

I once worked for a company that had an outstanding checkpoint security system alarm and CCTV system. My loss prevention department had received word that our early morning cleaning crew were possibly stealing. We did some review of video tape and found that they were emptying a mop bucket quite often outside. This was alarming to us because they had an in store sink for dumping water. We set up a time to come in and actually monitor their every move from all our cameras. Come to find out they were loading up the mop buckets with merchandise then taking them outside to their cars. The items they took did not have checkpoint security tags or sensors. They avoided the high dollar items because without a special tool they could not remove the sensors.

Checkpoint security tags are a great deterrent.  Who knows what they had already taken out?  Retail theft prevention and checkpoint systems will keep your customers and employees from receiving that 100% discount.
