Anti shoplifting

Anti Shoplifting

Don’t let your profits walk out the door.

I used to work for a company that sold footwear in addition to many other clothing items.  Surprisingly to me, the footwear was the most commonly stolen item and the hardest to catch.  I soon learned how important the anti shoplifting devices by Checkpoint systems were to literally preventing my products from walking out.

The main way I found that footwear was stolen was simple.  The shoplifter leaves their old nasty shoes in the box and walks out the door with the new shoes on.  Even though it seems obvious, it really is not.  You expect to see a shoplifter with a big bag or trying to somehow conceal product.  The truth is it can be easiest to miss the bold approach right in front of you as it is unexpected.

We started to use the Checkpoint security tags from Checkpoint systems.  These work with the checkpoint security system door alarms to sound an alarm if “live” tags go out the door without being deactivated.  This is great because we would put “soft” Checkpoint security tags under the insole of the footwear.  Customers did not know the items were being protected by anti shoplifting devices.  The shoplifters would trade shoes and then the Checkpoint security system alarm going off at the door was a dead giveaway of just what they were doing.

This served two main purposes.  First, it allowed us to identify the theft and react.  Secondly, it provided retail theft prevention.  Prevention is the key.  Once word got around (and it did quickly) that we were using Checkpoint security tags on footwear the theft and shrink in that department dropped dramatically.  The ultimate goal for anti shoplifting devices is the retail theft prevention aspect and Checkpoint systems makes that happen.

Go ahead and pop the top to a nice beverage. I dare you to try.

While you try I am going to stand back and enjoy the show because I know my liquor bottle security from Alpha security can’t be beat.  Package stores are often easy targets for theft as they usually are staffed with just enough people to man the counter.  This means that for the better part of the time there may be only 1 or 2 associates to checkout customers and try to watch the product.  The result is the customers get helped and the product gets taken.

That doesn’t have to be the case any longer.  Alpha security is a leader in bottle security.  The EASy bottle bottle lock goes over the cap of most any alcohol bottle to protect the product.  The bottle lock keeps the thief from being able to get to the contents on the inside.  Additionally, the EASy bottle bottle lock has a built in EAS tag that works with your existing EAS system to sound an alarm if someone is dumb enough to try to steal the bottle.

As mentioned, Alpha Security has more than just liquor bottle security.  Their bottle locks can be used as bottle security for high end wines and spirits as well.  Another great part about Alpha’s bottle security products is that they are reusable.  Unlike simple soft tags that have to be replaced, these bottle locks get removed at the time of purchase and then reused on the new product coming in.  Unless you do something to damage the bottle locks they will last you for a long time.  It’s much better to enjoy that cold one knowing your product is safe than needing a drink after looking at your profit and loss statement.

Clothing security tags … the next best thing to x-ray vision.

For those who work in clothing retailers you know how impactful shoplifting is to your business.  Perhaps the easiest way for shoplifters to steal clothes is by wearing them out.  The two most common ways are to simply exchange clothes or, most commonly, put the new clothes on under the old ones.  This makes it extremely hard to catch, especially if they are doing this in the fitting rooms.

In order to catch this type of shoplifting you need to put security tags on clothes.  It is illegal and unethical to place video cameras in fitting rooms or restrooms.  It is also not smart to peek over or under the door to see what your customer is doing.  To this end, the clothing security tags are the only thing you have to alert you to this type of theft.

You start by getting Checkpoint tags and installing a clothing alarm at the door.  You put the security tags on clothes and then wait for the magic to happen.  Now I never recommend making an accusation of theft based solely on the clothing alarm at the door.  Fact is, most alarms are created by the cashiers not removing the Checkpoint tags from the products at the register.  With that said, when the customer has no bags and the clothing alarm goes off then you at least have a good idea of what is going on.

Furthermore simply engaging the customer to see if they “need help with anything” lets them know that you know what they are doing and is likely to deter them from trying it again.  It also helps if you saw them take 5 items in the fitting room and only come out with 2 and then set the system off.  Process of elimination dictates they stole and you can safely make an apprehension at that point.

The key to prevent shoplifting is S3.

For those that don’t know, S3 is part of Alpha security’s line of retail anti theft devices.  Alpha has a great line of retail anti theft devices aimed at helping you prevent shoplifting.

I first became acquainted with Alpha security’s products a little over a year ago.  Now, I am a true believer in the quality and usefulness of their products.  Alpha products are designed for retailers who need more than the standard retail anti theft devices.  For example, hard line retailers in particular should love the ability to prevent shoplifting that these products offer.  Many times there aren’t a lot of great tools for boxed, large or odd shaped products.  Sensor tags work great for clothes, but how to you protect TV’s, computers, phones, cosmetics, razors, liquor bottles, handbags, etc?

Easy.  Keeper cases, bottle locks, spider wraps, S3 alarm tags, showsafe systems, etc.  Not only do all of these solutions work to prevent shoplifting of your high end products, but they are all designed with the goal of keeping your merchandise openly displayed and closer to your customer.  The result is increased sales without the sacrifice of security.  This is a truly unique set of solutions that will protect most any item you have to sale.  Did I mention they look good?  If not, let me say that I am impressed with the visual aesthetic of these products.  As business leaders we all know the importance of merchandising to “WOW” our customers.  Alpha keeps that in mind with their products and gives you the ability to still deliver that great first impression and prevent shoplifting.  Try it for yourself.  You won’t be disappointed.

Do you know how to stop shoplifting

There is no one answer to stop shoplifting in retail stores.  Most true solutions involve several components.  One central component necessary in all good models is the use of RF security labels and RF security tags.  RF labels and RF security tags work on a Radio Frequency.  They are sensor tags that you can apply to your product and they will set off an alarm at the door if the tag has not been removed or deactivated.

Many think that tags and labels are the same, but there actually is a difference.  Checkpoint security tags are hard tags that attach to product.  You will generally use the Checkpoint security tags for clothing and other soft lines products.  You can use lanyards to attach Checkpoint security tags to non-clothing items.  Checkpoint labels are what we refer to as soft tags.

Checkpoint labels come in several shapes and designs.  The traditional fashion is an adhesive sticker that you can put on boxed product or hid in non-boxed product.  By hiding, I mean putting the RF label somewhere inside the product.  Example: For wallets you can put a RF label on one of the advertisement cards inside.  This way if the thief takes the wallet from the box and puts it in their pocket or purse it is still protected by the RF label.  Checkpoint labels also can be sewn into clothing.  They are less noticeable and not as likely to be removed by would be shoplifters.

Whatever solution you use to stop shoplifting I urge you to make RF security tags and RF security labels a part of that solution.

Loss Prevention Professionals fighting employee theft – Atlanta Georgia

One of the biggest threats to a company is employee theft.  Employee theft, also called internal theft, is generally proven to be the number one shortage category in retail.  In addition, internal theft affects employee morale, benefits, and wages.  Employee theft also affects the ability of you, the business owner, to enjoy time away from work when you don’t know what is happening when you aren’t there.  For this reason I suggest using LP professionals to conduct a routine employee theft investigation to see what’s really going on in your store.

An employee theft investigation can take many shapes.  One way is you may know that you are losing a certain product or cash.  At that point the LP Agent can conduct an employee theft investigation to solve that particular problem.  Sometimes you may know who is stealing, but you either can’t prove it or you don’t know to what extent the theft is occurring.  Again, an LP Agent is trained to get these answers.  Finally, it is sometimes good to just shake the preverbal tree and see what falls out.

I have had a lot of success conducting integrity shops.  To do this the LP Agent will get someone unknown to the employees and set up a situation to test their integrity.  This can come in a variety of ways.  A common tactic is to turn in a live gift card and say it was found in the parking lot.  A good employee should turn the gift card into management.  What the LP Agent might find is that the employee keeps the card and uses it themselves.  The same basic tactic can be used to do several different situations, but the bottom line is it lets you know the caliber of the associates in the building and allows you to opportunity to “weed out” the bad apples in the bunch.

Anti-Shoplifting Devices: Saving You Profits and Making Customers Feel Safe

Shoplifting can put a major dent in your bottom line and these days many stores are turning to anti-shoplifting devices like EAS (electronic article surveillance) to help them safeguard their profits by deterring theft and boosting associate awareness.

Retail theft prevention devices such as EAS pedestals can also provide a visual deterrent against theft, sending folks that want to steal other, less well protected stores. As an added bonus, knowing you are scaring off the criminal element gives your customers a greater feeling of personal safety and security.

Where I currently work, we use a Checkpoint security system, which consists of Checkpoint security tags, deactivation pads at the point of sale, and EAS pedestals by the doors that alarm if someone tries to carry out our merchandise. As a loss prevention associate for a major retailer, I use anti-shoplifting devices regularly in my work to guard against major theft incidents like organized retail crime, where professional thieves come in and simply walk out the door with our high ticket items. The great thing about EAS systems, specifically Checkpoint security tags like the soft EAS tags, however, is they can also be used to target specific merchandise that seems to come up missing more often, which sometimes changes from season to season.

For instance, although theft of electronics, alcohol and fragrances might be high all the time and I might always have those products tagged with hard tags or Alpha spider wraps, the soft tags that are used with Checkpoint systems let me tag things that might be new that I think might be stolen or that are a new trend, like swimwear, drink mixes or baby formula, without investing in additional hard tags. The flexibility that I get from using retail theft prevention devices like soft EAS tags helps me more closely monitor my theft trends, keeps the criminals out of my building and helps safeguard my company’s bottom line.

Bottle Locks Protect Your Top Shelf to Save Top Dollar

Here’s a quick snapshot of what life was like for me before I discovered bottle locks. Maybe you can relate. You stocked the shelves just hours or minutes before with your best brands of whiskey or vodka or some other liquor and then walk by later only to notice an empty spot on the shelf. Trouble is you don’t remember selling it.

Liquor bottle security can be a huge concern. It only takes one or two theft incidents to very quickly lose lots of profits, especially when the brands and types that are targeted for theft are your most expensive, top shelf brands. If you have EAS towers in your store, I have found that liquor bottle security like the EASy Bottle bottle lock by Alpha Security provide a great visual deterrent to would-be thieves as well as a great way for your to protect your bottom line without ruining the visual presentation of the merchandise on the shelves. The bottle lock just snaps over the bottle lid and allow the bottles to beep when they pass through security towers just like tags do on clothing and items at other stores.

EASy Bottle locks from Alpha Security are simple to install and easy for cashiers to remove at the point of sale and not only save you money, but are also a great awareness builder around theft in your store. By placing the EASy Bottle locks on your top shelf, more expensive brands, it is easy for sales people to quickly identify which items might be more likely to be stolen and more able to help you drive profits in your business.

Security Tags on Clothes Deter Shoplifters and Save You Money

At the store where I work, we started using security tags on clothes slowly a few years ago after we noticed that the majority of our theft was in softlines merchandise. Not only was our merchandise coming up missing, it seemed as if every shoplifter we did apprehend was telling us it was easy to steal from our fitting rooms and take clothes because, as they put it, they didn’t “beep” going out the door through a clothing alarm like they did at many of the stores in the mall next store. After we began putting hard Checkpoint tags on our clothes to work with our existing EAS system, the results in our shrink have been incredible.

Because of the clothing security tags, our shrink was down in our juniors apparel in one year by almost 50%! As an LP associate my cases started to become more interesting and the police department also seemed to have more fun when people started coming in with tools to help them shoplift! Now they don’t tell me that we are easier to steal from than the mall as often as I am hearing that they couldn’t remove the Checkpoint tags without some kind of tool. Some of my shoplifters have even told me they changed their mind on stealing because we had security tags on clothes and would be ripped or destroyed if they tried to remove them.

I am so glad we took this easy step in increasing our clothing security. It has paid for itself over and over again because now we can sell the merchandise that was just being stolen before. I am really happy with the results and my police department is thankful for all the “silver bracelets” I’ve helped them hand out to criminals.
