Beware the Puffy Coat

If you spend any time in retail theft prevention, you know to watch out for coats in the summer. You also know that since the puffy coat became a clothing sensation, it is not only harder to see if someone is concealing merchandise under the coat, but the puffy coat is climbing its way to being one of the top theft items.

Now that the weather is getting colder, stores are again getting their fall shipments, including the problematic puffy coat. So how do you let your buying customers have access to your coats? By installing a Checkpoint security system.

The Checkpoint security system is the most recognizable of all the Checkpoint systems designed for anti shoplifting. It is composed of towers or pedestals at the doors, and the use of Checkpoint security tags on the clothing. When one of the Checkpoint security tags goes through the towers, an alarm goes off.

While great customer service will always be the best anti shoplifting tactic, integrating the Checkpoint system will do wonders for your inventory control. Whether the puffy coat is being stolen, or it is concealing other merchandise (or both!) Checkpoint security tags will help you deter and detect your potential thieves.

Use a reliable Background Check Company from keeping the preverbal bad apple from spoiling your bunch!!

If you have spent any amount of time in a work environment then you know how much employees impact all aspects of your business.  Having the right employee brings you much productivity, makes your job easier and keeps employee moral high.  Conversely, having the wrong employee can undermine your whole operation.  While good interviews are great we have all seen a candidate who is much better on paper and in an interview than what we end up with punching the clock.

To this end I recommend using employee background checks and a pre employment screening to aid you in weeding out the bad candidates so you get the right person for your business.  There are many different background checks you can use depending on the Background Check Company you use and the position that you are hiring for.  One basic type is criminal background checks.  This looks for local, state and possibly federal criminal histories in an effort to ensure your candidate has not been convicted for or even arrested for a crime.  Another option I like my Background Check Company to run is past employment and educational background checks.  These are two of the most falsified items on an employee’s resume.  They can also be hard to track down yourself as many companies no longer give references to other perspective employers.

Finally, pre employment screening for things like sex offender status and financial history can be important.  Would you hire someone to handle your company’s funds who can’t manage their own?  Do you want a sex offender working in a capacity that would bring them into contact with client’s kids?  All of these things bring risk to your company and quality employee background checks can help eliminate these liable hazards.

“It’s not important to put security tags on clothes”, says the sucker!!

Anyone who thinks it is not important to put security tags on clothes will not be in business long.  Clothes are perhaps the easiest items to steal.  Think about it.  The most obvious shoplifting advantage is fitting rooms.  Only clothing retailers have fitting rooms where shoplifters can conceal product in complete privacy.  All other retailers force shoplifters to at least steal on the floor where they can be observed either in person or on camera.  Secondly, no one questions the clothes people wear.  This means shoplifters can simply change clothes or put unpaid for clothes on over what they are wearing and it draws no attention.

In other retailers shoplifters have to carry bags, dress unseasonably or walk around with huge bulges under their clothes (where they have concealed product).  All of these things are dead giveaways to store personnel who are trained in shoplifting detection.  So with all that being said, it is definitely important to put security tags on clothes.

One of the top options to add clothing security to your store is by using clothing security tags.  One maker of clothing security is Checkpoint.  Checkpoint tags are a very reliable product that is well known by shoplifters.  When used with the clothing alarm, the Checkpoint tags will set off the clothing alarm when someone tries to leave with unpaid for merchandise.  This will give your associates the ability to potentially recover the merchandise or at least recognize the shoplifter and be ready the next time he/she comes in.  The other benefit is the deterrent effect.  When a would-be shoplifter sees an associate respond to a clothing alarm it lets them know up front that they will be noticed.  This in many cases will cause that person to leave your products alone and attempt theft somewhere less risky.

Did you know Public View Monitors actually prevent shoplifting?

Stores have been using camera systems for decades in order to catch and prevent shoplifting.  One popular component of camera systems is the use of Public View Monitors (or PVM).  The Public View Monitor is a video monitor that is placed on the sales floor where customers can see themselves on the screen.  This shows them that they are, in fact, being recorded.  The main reason for using retail anti theft devices is to prevent shoplifting and that is precisely what PVM’s can do for you.

We use a variety of retail anti theft devices in our stores.  All have a different purpose.  For example, we use sensor tags because it will cause an alarm and bring unwanted attention to a shoplifter.  We use Keeper cases and Spider wraps in an effort to keep shoplifters from walking out with product.  We use things like ink tags so that if tampered with the merchandise will be rendered unusable and thus not worth the thief’s time to try.  The PMV’s are used for a different reason.  These are used to show shoplifters that they will be recorded on video and that we, and quite possibly the police, will know exactly who they are.

Shoplifters don’t want to be known.  They know that just because they don’t get locked up today doesn’t necessarily mean they got away free and clear.  I have had success prosecuting numerous thieves by filing a police report and turning over the video of a theft.  The police are then able to link the theft at my store with someone caught elsewhere or even pulled over for a traffic violation.  With that said, when a would-be shoplifter knows they are on video they are much more likely to go to another store where perhaps they are not being recorded.

TRACK YOUR INVENTORY TO STOP SHOPLIFTING

The use of checkpoint labels is a proven method to stop shoplifting.

 Why?

Most theft is conducted by opportunists who looking for vulnerable merchandise.  To stop shoplifting and retailer must limit the number of opportunities a shoplifter has to steal something.

Major retailers will use an RF label to track accessories like jewelry and watches or fragrances because they can be concealed easily.  Grocery stores will typically place RF security labels on expensive meats in a cooler or wine on display.

Checkpoint security tags are successful because they alert a staff member when someone attempts to leave the store with unprocessed merchandise.

Checkpoint labels and RF labels are easy to use and cost effective.  During the course of merchandising your products all you need to do is place the RF labels or checkpoint security tags on each item you wish to track.

RF labels can be attached to merchandise using a fast drying adhesive that make them difficult to remove.  When a customer purchases a piece of merchandise the RF label is deactivated at the checkout counter.

A company I once worked for placed RF security labels on all accessories merchandise.  One summer afternoon last year 6 teenagers skipped school and decided to do a little shoplifting in our store.  They selected close to $500 USD in silver pendant bracelets and attempted to leave the store by placing them on their body to give the impression they had been purchased.

When they walked through our sensors the store alarms were activated.  The teenagers were so scared they started removing the merchandise as quickly as possible.  They eventually “dumped” the merchandise at the entrance to the store and ran out of the mall.

We never saw them back in the store after that incident.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase Checkpoint labels, Checkpoint security tags, and other RF labels that can help you stop shoplifting in your business.

Employee Theft: The Quiet Threat Of The Retail Industry

Employee theft like external theft is an unfortunate reality for the retail professional.  Many small business owners and large corporations are looking to new and traditional methods to reduce their exposure to internal theft.   Although, technology increases and new methods of detecting employee theft are developed, traditional employee theft investigations can be an effective method of removing this element from you business.

The traditional employee theft investigation aims to not only remove the individual form your operation, but also attempts to identify any control failures or preventable loopholes in your business.  These employee theft investigations usually involve the work of the entire loss prevention and management teams.  The investigations most often begin with a tip, an observed behavior, a cash shortage or just general suspicion of an employee.  When the loss prevention department receives this information they begin their employee theft investigation.  Commonly, the in store loss prevention team begins by monitoring and working with the store management team to effectively schedule the employee in question.  This gives the team the opportunity to watch the employee and identify how they are causing a loss to the organization.  This not only provides the method, but also what controls the store needs to change to prevent these actions in the future.  Once the internal theft is identified, the employee theft investigation moves on to the interview.

The internal theft interview is a controlled employee theft discussion.  This allows the loss prevention professional to discuss the situation surrounding the loss and allows the individual engaged in the employee theft to provide a reason why.  The interview often results in corrective action, up to and including termination or prosecution.

While most large organization have a department that is solely dedicated to deal with the internal theft issues, smaller businesses do not.  So what is the small business owner to do?  There are many organizations that can provide this service and an effect price.  This service can have a large impact on your business and improve your general moral.

Don’t let shoplifters be the scariest part of your Halloween. Use Retail Theft Protection.

With the holidays fast approaching, many businesses are gearing up for the increase of sales that comes with the busiest time of the year. The increased customer base can translate to more money for your business, but it can also mean more people trying to get your merchandise for free. The last thing you want to be worried about is theft. One of the best ways to utilize anti shoplifting tools is through retail theft prevention devices such as Checkpoint security tags by Checkpoint Systems.

With a Checkpoint security system, you can be more worried about ghosts and ghouls than shoplifters. At the stores I cover as a loss prevention agent, the managers and associates want to place their full focus on ensuring the customer has an excellent experience in finding the right clothes for their loved ones. Not all stores have the resources for a full loss prevention team so utilizing Checkpoint security tags can make a huge difference in putting a scare on the wannabe holiday shoplifters that can plague your store.

Checkpoint security tags are easy and quick to install. They work with the entire Checkpoint security system to sound an alarm when someone attempts to take your merchandise outside of the store. Shoplifters are familiar with these anti shoplifting devices and they would rather go somewhere else than risk getting caught removing the security tags. The devices keep the merchandise on the shelves so your customers can find the perfect presents.

Instead of letting the shoplifters put the “boo” in your night, install a Checkpoint security system and scare those thieves away!

Employee Steals $41,000. Criminal Background Checks Would Have Prevented!

I recently conducted an investigation into a very expensive employee theft loss where adequate background checks were not conducted. As I was interviewing the employee it hit me that had this company been conducting criminal background checks none of this would have ever occurred. The employee would have never had the opportunity to steal $41,000 because she would have never been hired. She had been caught before, TWICE!

Background check experts know what to look for and how to obtain it. In many cases a background check company can locate records that are not easily obtainable. Many times when we conduct employee background checks we look “between the lines” of what the candidate told our client. We will find not only criminal records that they lied about or omitted but we will also find serious facts that would curl the hair of any potential employer. Pre employment screening has revealed that applicants have not just stolen from one but many previous employers. We have also found violent crimes including sexual assault and robbery just to name a few.

As a background check company we have also conducted background checks on people who have outright lied about their education. Pre employment screening of this type has revealed candidate who not only did not finish a degree but never even attended the school.

Besides criminal background checks and education employers should look at credit histories, driving records, SSN validations and sex offender records just to name a few. Many employers believe that they have staff that can conduct employee background checks and be their own in-house background check experts. That would be like trying to be your own doctor. It takes special skills and abilities to make this process cost effective and complete. Do not risk YOUR business!

The addition of alcohol and wine to any shop’s inventory is a great way to increase your margin, and ultimately increase your bottom line profit. The down side, is that liquor is a high theft item. Alpha Security makes a very reliable form of bottle security, and not just for liquor bottle security.  EASy Bottle brand bottle locks work with liquor and wine bottles through the concept of product denial.

The bottle lock is a cap that fits over the neck of your bottle and locks the product safely away. Without the use of a key to unlock the cap, the alcohol inside is virtually unattainable. No one wants to have to have the inconvenience of putting bottles, in particular the expensive ones, behind a glass case. That only creates more work for your employees, and leaves a bad taste in your patrons mouths.

The use of the EASy Bottle system puts the feeling of good will back into your store as customers can freely shop all of your products. A happy customer always brings good sales, and good word of mouth, one of the best (and cheapest) forms of advertising. Its a win-win situation. Increased sales, increased customer count, increased margin, and increased profit.
