When Dishonest Employees Aren’t Alone

It’s hard enough to think that one of your own employees has been stealing from you. It’s even harder to think that often, employee theft involves either multiple employees or an employee working with someone outside the company like a friend, a relative, or even a vendor.

Benjamin Franklin once said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It is so true when you are trying to prevent internal theft from happening. One of the most common forms of prevention is to use inventory control products like Checkpoint’s RF tags and labels. Their use sends a clear message to your employees that you are watching and you will not tolerate internal theft.

I remember an employee theft investigation where a cashier was ringing up her boyfriend. Underneath his cart was about $300 dollars in product that she did not charge him for. Because she did not want to draw attention to the items, she left them under the cart, and did not realize that the items had RF tags on them. When the boyfriend tried to leave, he set off the alarms at the door alerting everyone around to the situation.

Another employee theft investigation I resolved started out by watching an employee going up to a register with his arms full of merchandise and started to deactivate the clothing RF tags. The clue that made me realize I was looking at a case of employee theft was that there were no customers around. He then bagged up the merchandise and walked out the door. Had there not been tags to remove, I may not have been able to detect his activity.

SECURE YOUR FRAGRANCES, WATCHES AND JEWELRY

Fragrances, watches and jewelry can be easily concealed in a purse or shopping bag.  As a matter of fact fragrance gift sets that are widely available during the holidays just walk right out the door sometimes without being concealed.

I’ve seen it happen hundreds of times… literally!

If you want to stop shoplifting you must be proactively protecting your inventory and checkpoint labels are a good place to start.  RF security labels are similar to the RF security tags or sensor tags placed on clothing items.  They act as a physical inventory tracking devices and can be great deterrents to help stop shoplifting.

Most of the retailers I’ve worked for over the years use both overt and covert methods for tracking merchandise by using RF labels. You can place an RF label in plain sight on a merchandise tag or discreetly conceal it within a package.  You can even get creative and have RF labels customized with barcodes so they can be concealed in plain sight.

When merchandise is purchased the RF security tags are deactivated during checkout.  If the merchandise is not purchased and someone attempts to leave the store with an activated RF label the checkpoint security tag will alert the staff that someone has just shoplifted and you can take action.

Checkpoint labels are easy to apply and difficult to remove.  I’ve caught a large number of shoplifters trying to steal fragrance gift sets and watches over the years because the dishonest customers attempt to remove the RF security labels before they leave the store.

Attempting to remove RF labels will force shoplifters to reveal themselves and their true intentions.

Checkpoint Security System: Stops shoplifters in their tracks

In today’s retail environment it is important to have an effective anti shoplifting program place that will protect the assets of your business from dishonest customers that might come into the store.  This anti shoplifting program should be one part of an overall retail theft prevention program.  Retailers must be aware that theft will occur at their locations.  It is the goal of a retail theft prevention program to focus to focus on internal and external theft.

Retail theft continues to rise and retailers do not have the option of whether they will create a retail theft prevention program in their stores, but when they will.  A checkpoint security system combines an anti shoplifting system as well as an internal theft deterrent.  Checkpoint systems are designed with the retailer in mind.  The checkpoint systems are reliable and effective in reducing a retailer’s exposure to theft.  The Checkpoint Security system works in tandem with the Checkpoint security tags which are usually placed on high priced products in a store.  However, these checkpoint security tags can be placed on any item in a retail store.  Checkpoint systems are utilized across a variety of retail sectors.  This lets retailers know that checkpoint systems are trusted by a wide range of companies.

As a professional in the field of loss prevention, I often look at the retail theft prevention methods are being used by other companies.  In a lot of the stores I visit I see the checkpoint security tags in use protecting merchandise.  The checkpoint security system is used in a lot of retail locations and I understand why.  Retailers are not willing to simply let profit walk out the door. Being loss prevention professional I know the hard day to day fight to protect profits and maintain costs.  In my career I have seen the results of having a great theft prevention program in place produces.  Unfortunately, I have also seen what not being proactive against theft results in.

Picking the right Background Check Company can be hard.

It is not hard to find a Background Check Company, but it can be difficult to find the right one.  Pre employment screening and employee background checks are vital to any business.  When looking for a Background Check Company I recommend finding one that utilizes background check experts.

Some companies simply push information to the local police and say they did criminal background checks.  In reality a good Background Check Company will do much more than that.  They will utilize background check experts to query information from a variety of police departments.  They will also look at financial information and other factors that may be important to paint a good picture of your potential candidate.

A good Background Check Company will also offer a good pre employment screening service.  The pre employment screening can cover drug testing, personality tests as well as other aptitude information.  All of these things are important when choosing to bring a stranger into your business and entrusting them with your customers, your merchandise and your money.

Today, background checks are increasingly affordable.  Modern technology makes background checks much easier which in turn makes them a more affordable service to offer.  It also makes conducing employee background checks more sensible.  If you needed to put together a bookcase would you use an old-fashioned screwdriver or a new powered screwdriver?  Most people would use the newer option since it is available and makes the job easier.  To that end, you can simply rely on the old-fashioned interview and hope you pick the right candidate (which is not an exact science) or you can also add criminal background checks and pre employment screening to improve success in this process.  The decision seems easy.

Put it on your List

Can you believe how quickly the year has gone? Me either. The sales for the holidays have already begun. Store displays are up and sparkling in the fluorescent lights. Party invitations are being addressed and sent out as we speak. What’s next on the list? Shopping for presents, food and of course, the alcohol. In the midst of shoppers running around like crazy, trying to get their few last minute items, one thing is always overlooked. The shoplifter hiding in the back of the store waiting for his opportunity to steal your wares.

With so many things to remember, both at home and at work, liquor bottle security is often overlooked. With all of the distractions, wouldn’t it be nice to have something simple to handle bottle security? EASy Bottle by Alpha Security is designed to do just that. The one time placement of a bottle lock increases bottle security without the additional (expensive) overhead of added payroll.

The bottle locks come in a variety of types from clear to solid and can be used as bottle security for wine, as well as for liquor bottle security. The bottle lock is a cap that is placed over the top of the bottle preventing access to the contents within. Now you can focus on your task at hand, and have one less worry on your list this holiday season.

It Is Time To Tag!

Having clothing security tags or a clothing alarm on your most valuable product line just makes sense.  Placing security tags on clothes that are shoplifted more than others is a good clothing security measure.  Clothing security tags are relatively inexpensive and return large savings on a small investment.  When I was loss prevention associate I remember showing the store associates how to place security tags on clothes in their departments. In this particular store, we had a huge problem with our name brand clothing being stolen.

We would constantly find price tags and hangers from merchandise that had been stolen in the fitting rooms.  One of the first measures I took to stop the problem was to increase the number of items that had clothing security tags on them.  I wanted to improve the overall clothing security in the store.  I also asked my manager to install a clothing alarm.  After implementing all of the initiatives that I knew would make a difference, I began to see a noticeable increase in the number of clothing security tags that were being.  I was also able to track a decrease in the number of price tags and hangers being found in the fitting rooms.

The clothing security tags that we found to be the most reliable and tamper resistant were Checkpoint tags.  The Checkpoint tags were the most durable when perspective shoplifters would try and pulled them off in an effort to take the clothing.  During the stores inventory it was obvious that because we used more security tags on clothes we reduce the loss and improved the clothing security in the store. The Checkpoint tags and the clothing alarm were the right tools for reducing losses in the store.  It is really no other method more effective than security tagging clothes to reduce losses from theft.

Retail Anti Theft Devices: A winning solution to preventing shoplifting.

Employing the use of retail anti theft devices has always been the first line of defense in controlling shoplifting.  Every specific plan to dete shoplifting should contain a component that includes retail anti theft devices.  Shoplifters are using various methods in which they try and disguise their criminal activities.  It is not easy for associates not trained in loss prevention to know a shoplifter from a regular customer. This is why anti theft devices provide the best solution to preventing shoplifting.

Shoplifters want to appear to be your average everyday shopper.  The art of surprise is the goal of most perspective shoplifters.  One way in which retailers can turn the table on these shoplifters masquerading as shoppers is to utilize retail anti theft devices.  These devices have been proven method to prevent shoplifting.  Retailers have found that in order to prevent shoplifting that there must be a noticeable and pronounced deterrent.  Retail anti theft devices provides that observable deterrent.

In a time where budgets are tight and there is simply not enough employees to watch the store and make the sales, another measure is need to help prevent shoplifting.  If an associate has to leave her register or is distracted by a customer, it could be the opportunity a perspective shoplifter is looking for.  The use of anti theft devices would create another layer of security for preventing shoplifting.  It is impossible to expect associates to be every where or to see everything. Clothing alarms and similar anti theft devices provides protection when associates simply are unable to prevent shoplifting.  In all my years of loss prevention experience I have seen many shoplifters walk away from an area that used anti theft devices and look for other items in the store that was not protected.  I am convinced that any plan to prevent shoplifting must include the use of retail anti theft devices.

What’s in a label? RF Security Technology

There is a new wave of high tech security measures being implemented in the retail industry.  This wave utilizes RF technology.  Radio frequency radiates from a device or RF label and sends a signal to a receiver.  If an RF label is detected within a certain range, the RF label causes the receiver system to react.  After receiving a signal from RF labels, RF security tags or RF security labels the receiver will give off an audible alarm.  The new RF technology is the latest measures being employed to stop shoplifting.

RF labels and RF security tags are two of the most used devices.  These devices can be attached externally using a variety of methods.  RF security labels can be integrated directly into the product.  These fully integrated labels are used on a variety of products.  Some products that have commonly used RF security labels have been work boots, clothing and medicine.  RF security labels can be adapted and integrated very easily to suit the retailer’s needs.

In the fight to stop shoplifting, Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint security tags have been on the frontline.  The loss prevention industry has used Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint security tags to protect thousands of products.  It is important when using RF technology that there is a reliable brand of devices available to use.  Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint security tags have proven to be one of the most reliable on the market.  Retailers must take every measure they can to stop shoplifting.  RF technology will certainly be around awhile.  This technology allows retailers to place an invisible field of protection around their entire store. In my many years of working as a loss prevention manager, I have relied on the use of RF security tags and RF labels to help me stop shoplifting in my stores.  I feel that this technology is a must regardless of what other measures may be in place.

It’s An Inside Job: The True Drain to Business Profits.-Atlanta Georgia

It is a well known fact in the retail community that employee theft can result in major losses long before it is discovered.  Retailers go to great lengths to insulate themselves from becoming victims of employee theft.  Background checks and drug screening are some of the measures retailers’ employee to ensure that they hire honest and talented individuals.  However, even with the utilization of these measures, employee theft still persists in the retail environment causing millions in loss revenue to employers.

Internal theft has consistently accounted for the majority of retail losses.  The only way to effectively combat this pervasive problem is to employ the help of dedicated loss prevention professionals.  The use of an expert trained in loss prevention, allows a business owner to focus on their bottom line, while ensuring that if there is an issue of internal theft, they have an experienced professional conducting the employee theft investigation.  Conducting an employee theft investigation is a complicated process.  Employees who have come to a business to steal from that business are aware of the many ways in which their employers are vulnerable to theft.

Investigating employee theft may consist of dedicated surveillance or exception report analysis.  To the untrained eye the employee may appear to be working normally when in fact they are robbing the business blind.  An experienced loss prevention professional is able to look beyond what is seen and determine what is actually going on.  In this economy internal theft is on the rise.  Many employees are staying on jobs they would rather leave, but with choices being limited they are resigned to make the most out of where they are at, or take the most from where they are at.  Every employer must have a reliable partner that knows how to conduct an effective employee theft investigation.

You better watch out, shoplifters are coming.

Unfortunately, with the holidays also bring more shoplifters into the stores.  It seems hard to believe, but some shoppers enter your store to see how easy is it to carry something out without paying for it.  Shoplifters are always looking for those last minute gift ideas and they plan to get it at a steal.  Having an anti shoplifting program in place is critical during the holidays.  An anti shoplifting program is is a simple one to implement and can ascent any overall retail theft prevention plan.  A Checkpoint security system can add technology to any retail theft prevention plan.  Checkpoint systems are highly visible in many retail outlets I frequent.  After working in loss prevention for many years, I know the value of a checkpoint security system.  All retailers must commit to creating an anti shoplifting environment especially during the busy holiday season.

Checkpoint systems should be an integral part of an overall retail theft prevention program.  A Checkpoint security system utilizes checkpoint security tags which create a visible deterrent to a perspective shoplifter and also an audible reminder if the perspective shoplifter tries to exit with merchandise without purchasing it and getting the checkpoint security tags removed or deactivated.  When shoplifters see checkpoint security tags affixed to merchandise they know that they are not easy to remove without the deactivator or detacher that only come with checkpoint systems.  It is a no brainier, if they tamper with the checkpoint security tags they risk being in jail for the holidays.  There is nothing better than having shoplifters know that theft will not be tolerated and that the store will not make it easy for them.

Maintaining a good retail theft prevention program is one way to make sure you have a happy holiday. It is important ant to think theft prevention around the holidays.
