The Smallest RF Label

When I say small, I mean small. This particular RF label is only the size of your standard postage stamp. There are a plethora of different Checkpoint labels available to fit your needs and this one is designed for smaller items that do not need big, bulky RF labels taking up an entire side.

While the postage stamp RF security labels are small and aesthetically pleasing, you do need to keep in mind that their detection is not going to be as good as some of the larger Checkpoint security tags. As I have stated in some of my previous articles, when it comes to RF security tags, size matters. This is why it is very important to know what RF security labels to use in what situations.

There is always going to be decisions to be made about which RF security tags to use on what products. Do you sacrifice aesthetics for better detection or sacrifice some detection for aesthetics? If the latter is your choice, then the postage stamp label is right for you.

The Checkpoint postage stamp label is available in three main styles. The first style is a simple plain white label that is very popular for obvious reasons. The second style is a faux barcode. This feature helps to disguise that it is a security tag even further than it’s already small size. In the third style the label is black. This helps the label blend into darker colored merchandise to help keep it from standing out.

With all of this in mind, I hope I have helped you decide what security label will best help you stop shoplifting from occurring in your store.

An Honest Mistake or a Dishonest Associate – Atlanta Georgia

In any employee theft investigation there is an important question that should be answered quickly.  Is this a case of an associate making an honest mistake?  I have found that associates that make honest mistakes will not develop a pattern of errors that become harder to explain the longer the employee theft investigation continues.  The purpose of the employee theft investigation is to uncover the truth about observed suspicious behavior or suspicious transaction based on exception reporting.

The reason it is necessary to conduct a thorough investigation is due to the tremendous amount of employee theft that has been committed and was caught far too late.  In the retail industries that I have worked in, employee theft accounted for more than half of all the losses the companies incurred.  The reason for such high losses is because of the time employee theft may go unseen.  Companies can be taken for thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, if employee theft is not disposed of quickly.

While working as a loss prevention manager, I remember when an internal theft case was discovered at one of the store’s distribution centers.  The internal theft case found that there was a pattern of receiving shortages occurring in several districts, all being serviced by this specific distribution center.  The investigation found that the distribution center associates were working with store receiving associates and stealing thousands in merchandise.  The receiving associates would always say that there was just an honest mistake when they unloaded the truck and that the merchandise did arrive at the store.  Thanks to the smart efforts of several loss prevention professionals and corporate loss prevention the case was solved.  This internal theft case included multiple associates in multiple locations.  The theft that was being done could have continued for a long time, if there were not quick and concise actions by the Loss Prevention Department.

Use a Checkpoint security system to protect your holiday spirit.

The holidays are upon us.  We can look forward to presents and family time.  As retailers we look forward to a great fourth quarter of increased sales and hopefully a nice fat bonus.  What can dampen this spirit of joy and merriment is theft.  Theft often makes us mad.  It dampens morale in the store.  It cuts into profits and sales (which directly cuts into that bonus we all want at the first of the year).  In order to prevent theft there are a few things we need on our Santa list.

Anti shoplifting devices are a must.  If we are truly going to experience retail theft prevention then we start with anti shoplifting devices.  Checkpoint systems is a great maker of EAS products.  The Checkpoint security tags are some of the more reliable and affordable tags on the market.  Checkpoint security tags are also known to shoplifters.  Shoplifters see Checkpoint security tags and will often leave the product alone and go steal elsewhere (which is exactly what we want).

Another option from Checkpoint systems are cameras.  Public view monitors are great at deterring both theft and robbery.  When potential criminals see that their activity is being recorded then they are much less likely to commit the crime as they know the police will have an easy case.  Covert cameras are also great for keeping an eye on associates, but since retail theft prevention is what we are after I like to let everyone see that we have video.

Finally, a Checkpoint security system is in order.  A Checkpoint security system will help protect your business when you are away.  We all want to be able to enjoy taking time off at the holidays and it’s nice to be able to relax knowing the store is in good hands.

The consequences of a bad hiring decision

Pre employment screening is a necessary part of the hiring process that cannot be overlooked because the consequences of one bad hire can be disastrous.  In most businesses employee costs are the first or second line item in your annual budget.  Employee costs can include anything from pay, benefits, training and much more so making good hiring decisions and conducting background checks is critical to protecting your investment.

Unfortunately most companies today spend more time and effort trying to decide on the best copy machine or competing wireless devices than they do in selecting qualified applicants or conducting background checks.  Background check experts believe that the fallout from a single bad hire can rise to more than twice the employee’s annual salary.

The long-term impact of failing to conduct employee background checks is numerous; lost customers and business, litigation, lost brand recognition or credibility, damaged employee morale, theft or destruction of property, workplace violence and so much more.  The possibilities are endless!

Most businesses do not have the time or resources to conduct pre employment screening in house so they hire background check experts that can save time and reduce liability.  Don’t let your workplace become victimized by a bad hire because you failed to employ a background check company to perform criminal background checks on your prospective new hires… or even your existing employees!

A background check company can conduct fast and affordable criminal background checks on your short list applicants before you make that critical hiring decision. The simple measure of conducting employee background checks alone could you’re your business thousands in lost time and revenue by keeping criminals out of the workplace.

Ring in the New Year with Bottle Security!!

While we’re all “popping the top” to celebrate the coming New Year, the thieves are doing the same.  The only difference is as a business owner you paid for BOTH!!  Don’t let shoplifting be a drain on your profits and sales.  Use Alpha Security to assist in all your bottle security needs.

Alpha Security has several bottle security options to assist you in protecting your merchandise from theft (both internal and external) while still keeping your product openly displayed for quick sell.  For your liquor bottle security I suggest the “EASy bottle” bottle lock.  The “EASy bottle” bottle lock is a cap that locks onto your liquor bottles and prevents thieves of getting to the product.  These bottle locks also work on your existing AM and RF EAS systems to sound an alarm if someone tries to walk out without paying for the protected product.

If you don’t need liquor bottle security, but need bottle security for other items, such as wines and champagnes, then Alpha Security still has you covered.  The “EASy bottle” bottle locks work on most any bottle so you can likely use these for the non-liquor items as well.  For really large mouthed bottles you may consider the “Steel Grip” bottle lock.  This lock goes around the neck of the bottle.  It too works with your EAS system to sound an alarm if a customer or employee is trying to leave with unpaid for products.

I know we are all watching budgets as we end the year, but this is a great product to consider investing in for 2012.  Alpha security makes a huge impact in my business and I know it can in yours too.

Focus on customers not shoplifters with clothing security tags!

Great customer service drives retail businesses. Without great service, customers won’t want to come back and continuing buying your merchandise. But how can you deliver great service if all of your focus is on shoplifters and potential thieves? Allow clothing security tags to deter the shoplifters and free you up to deliver the service that will drive customers to come back time and time again.

A few days ago at a store neighboring my work, a shoplifter ran out with several pairs of jeans that had no clothing security tags. The associates and managers were in a panic outside of the store calling the police and attempting to describe what the thief looked like as he ran down the street with their clothes. I couldn’t help but wonder how many potential customers could have received great customer service in the time the associates were busy with the thief. They could have sold hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise! If only they had clothing security.

Occurrences such as the one above could have easily been prevented had that store installed clothing alarms. Installing Checkpoint tags and clothing alarms throughout your store can free up your associates to fully focus on the customer. Not only can security tags on clothes deter shoplifters, they have minimal interference to the customer who can simply take them to the register to have the clothing security removed at the time of purchase.

Don’t be the store that is not protected. Install clothing security, such as Checkpoint tags, on your merchandise and allow your associates to focus on the customer.

What Are You Doing to Prevent Shoplifting?

Retailers must ensure that they are doing all they can to prevent shoplifting.  Shoplifting is a serious problem and must be met with serious solutions.  Retailers that create an environment in their stores that makes it difficult for shoplifters to conduct their criminal activities will be successful in reducing their inventory losses.  There are a few measures that retailers can take that will have an instant impact on reducing inventory losses and prevent shoplifting.

It should be the goal of every retailer to create an environment of shoplifter awareness.  Attentive associates are always the first line of defense in the fight to prevent shoplifting.  Associates should be trained in identifying suspicious behavior.  Shoplifters often have the same method of operation.  They will enter the store in hopes of catching an associate busy and unaware of their movement throughout the department.  The shoplifter wants uninterrupted time to steal the merchandise they want.  This is why attentive associates are important.

However, it is not always possible for an associate to be there to prevent shoplifting from taking place.  This is the reason smart retailers invest in retail anti theft devices.  These devices act as a visible deterrent to shoplifting.  Retail anti theft devices is great at deterring shoplifting.  Shoplifters know that these devices are not easy to get around.  Security tags that are attached onto clothing are impossible to remove from clothing.  Merchandise that has RF security labels integrated into them is hard to identify and the shoplifter may be detected by a RF security system.

Having a well trained staff and the right retail anti theft devices in your store can mean major reductions in inventory shortages.  It is imperative that both of these measures be apart of an overall strategy to reduce the losses from shoplifting in your stores.  Preventing shoplifting is the responsibility of every associate, but even good associates need help.  Retail anti theft devices provides the help they need.

RF security labels sewn in the clothes at manufacturing!? For real???

Yes.  You can now get your RF security labels and RF security tags applied during manufacturing so you don’t have to do it.  How amazing is that?  No more associate hours spent putting on EAS tags, but rather spent helping customers.  Isn’t that an innovative concept?

Checkpoint security is a leading maker of RF security tags and RF security labels.  Their Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint security tags can now be applied directly during the manufacturing process.  If you sell clothes you can have Checkpoint labels woven inside the clothes (much like the wash instructions).  The EAS deactivator at checkout will deactivate the tag and the customer can leave it alone or remove easily with a pair of scissors at home.  Besides helping to deter theft this can also help defend against wear and return customers.  If they cut the tags out you know they’ve worn and altered the product and can easily refuse the refund.

For many other items you can have the Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint security tags built in.  For boxed products they can apply the RF security tags either on the inside or the outside of the boxes.  If done outside it is more visible to shoplifters to let them know this item is protected.  If you are having a problem with ORC groups removing labels before stealing the product you can make it harder by having them put inside the boxes. It is hard to stop shoplifting, but using RF labels and tags will go a long way to helping in this fight.

Employee theft and Peer Pressure: a Dangerous Combination

As long as your business has employees, there will always be the possibility of an internal theft problem. Many business owners think it will never happen to them; however all it takes is one dishonest employee to dramatically cut into your businesses profits.

One recent employee theft investigation that I worked involved a dishonest employee and her friend. It was obvious from video and interviews that over the course of time the dishonest employee became more confident as she got away with discount abuse time after time. As her friend saw her get away with the abuse, she became involved in the discount abuse as well. She allowed many of her friends and family members to use her discount to receive merchandise for half off retail price. This type of internal theft heavily impacted the store’s sales numbers and after the two employees were fired we saw an increase in the store’s profits.

Employee theft like this highlights an important point: if other employees notice a dishonest employee getting away with doing something wrong, they maybe more influenced to become involved in dishonest behaviors as well. It could result from peer pressure or simply the allure of seeing someone take advantage of the system and not get caught.

The best defense against employee theft is to keep an open ear. An employee who talks about having no money but is constantly shopping is a major red flag. Another red flag is employees whose friends and family members frequently shop in the store on regular intervals. If you suspect you may have an internal theft problem, consider hiring an LP professional to conduct a full employee theft investigation.

Protect Your Leather Items with retail theft protection!

Leather items are expensive and heavily sought after by thieves. This is especially true at the retail store I work at. The high price tag equates to a higher resell value for those who want those items for free. That is why we always ensure we place Checkpoint security tags on those pricey leather jackets. The Checkpoint security system is an indispensable resource for keeping those items on the shelf. Without retail theft protection, thieves think it’ll be worth the risk of getting caught if they can get away with $200 jacket and that can severely hurt your business’s profits.

In my experience, the Checkpoint security tags by Checkpoint systems are an excellent fit for any heavier jackets especially with the winter months fast approaching. The security tags create a statement, telling potential thieves that this store is anti shoplifting.

The Checkpoint security tags are tough, too. Not only does the size of the tag allow for easy access for the customer, but the security tag material is not easily tampered with. Shoplifters are familiar with retail theft protection and they know the time spent attempting to disrupt the Checkpoint security system only increases the risk of getting caught. That risk is not worth the reward, so next time the shoplifter will choose the store without retail theft protection. Don’t be the store that’s not protected. Make it tough on the shoplifters and force them to go somewhere else.
