Be Prepared, They Are

Every shoplifter that has ever walked into a store with the intention of stealing has probably had a dry run in their mind of how it’s going to go down. They have systematically thought through what they want to take, from what type of clothing to size quantity and possibly even color. They know about where in the store the items are located. They also know how they are going to get out, and whether they are using the merchandise for personal use or if it will be a resale (pawn, e-bay, etc).

Clothing security should have the same amount of thoughtfulness put into it from your end. If a criminal is going to make an attempt at your store, you should make it as difficult as possible for them to succeed. With the right clothing security in place, you may even prevent the thieves from ever stepping foot in your establishment.

The usage of clothing security tags alongside a clothing alarm has statistically been proven as a reliable form of clothing security. Countless retailers from a variety of sales and geographical demographics have proven their reduction of shrink is directly tied to the installation of a clothing alarm and security tags on clothes.

Don’t let the criminal mind get the best of you. Plan and prepare security tags on clothes to give the criminals a run for their money instead of yours.

Preventing shoplifting vs. Stopping a shoplifter

When most people think about store security they think that their job is to catch shoplifters. But in reality a better way to safeguard retail store merchandise is to Prevent shoplifting. Retail anti theft devices are one way to prevent shoplifting, but there are other methods that can be addressed to help in this matter.

Obviously store security will apprehend suspect shoplifter when they are caught in the act of shoplifting. But as a business owner you also want to have a way to deter shoplifters from even attempting to shoplift. Retail anti theft devices come in various forms to deter theft such a placing RF security tags, RF security labels on clothing and other hi value items or keeping hi value items under lock and key.

But one of the most valuable anti theft weapon that a business has is the staff. Training your staff properly on methods to prevent shoplifting is one of the best ways when combining it with retail anti theft devices can deter theft. Most shoplifters do not want to enter a store that has observant and a staff very skilled in customer service. If a shoplifter sees that the staff is very observant in the department and approaches them seeking to help them. They aren’t able to remove the retail anti theft devices from the merchandise. So the shoplifter would rather leave empty handed than take a chance of being apprehended.

Keep them shopping

Why is retail security so important to running a successful business? Anti theft devices are often seen as a time consuming hindrance and bad PR instead of a valuable tool. The number one reason is customer satisfaction.

It may seem like customers would be more likely to use the ignorance is bliss mantra when they shop. If there is no apparent sign of retail security, then they should assume they are perfectly safe, right? Not necessarily. If you do not have any visible theft in your store, it could really just be a matter of time before you become a target for shoplifters.

Shoppers want to feel safe when they shop. A relaxed shopper will take their time and walk the aisles seeing what you have to sell. They are more likely to try on several items in a fitting room instead of just one. They are also in a better mood. That makes it easier on you and your staff to increase your ticket average and decrease your customer complaints.

A customer that does not feel safe will not do any of those things. If they even decide to buy anything, it will be quick and to the point. Don’t allow petty criminals to scare off your good business.

Some thieves are just brazen

So you think that just because you have every piece of inventory tagged with RF labels or Checkpoint security tags that you are absolutely protected from shoplifters?  I hate to be the bearer of bad news but if some scumbag professional thief wants to steal from you, they will, and they might not even try to conceal their efforts.

As an example, on the second floor of my store there is only one entrance/exit, not including access points from elevators or escalators.  Along the walls of said entrance are walls of product, on one side clearance items and the other side high-end children’s clothing.  For two weekends in a row, the staff working that floor discovered a particular section of the high-end product suddenly emptied out of everything.  This prompted us to mandate that any product being placed in that section be affixed with a Checkpoint security tag, regardless of whether it was within guidelines.  The next weekend a man was spotted by a store employee coming into the store with a large shopping bag, going directly to that previously hit corner, and loading the bag with everything he could get his hands on.  In less than twenty seconds he had cleaned out the section and made for the door when the employee tried to call out to him, which prompted him to run.

We still haven’t caught him on camera and there is literally only twenty feet separating his target section with the doorway.  It has required us to think outside the box.  Applying RF labels or security tags only helps when the shoplifters are worried about getting noticed.  This particular guy doesn’t seem to care.

How to stop employee theft on a satellite property

This doesn’t necessarily apply to everyone company out there, but if your store or company possesses an employee run satellite property like a warehouse or shipping site you may want to give this a read.

Catching employee theft in your immediate vicinity is tough enough as it is.  If you give said employees a building all to themselves with nothing but product and time they will figure out a way to fleece you good.  Even if you implement standard methods of catching internal theft like installing cameras or making random inventory counts they will still find some way to get around it.

My store in particular has an off-site warehouse which is manned for eight hours out of the day by two members of the stock team.  It is a dull post and the warehouse is filled to the rafters with expensive product ranging from appliances to overstock clothing.  After a few reports of large quantities of items going missing my team conducted a full inventory of the property and found the stock levels were all wrong in comparison to what was in the system.  We tried reviewing the tapes from the warehouse cameras but came up with nothing.  Instead we used a more ‘old fashioned’ employee theft investigation to uncover the truth.

With an agreement from a nearby fast-food restaurant we established a rotation of stake-outs.  It is just as it sounds.  A member of my team, armed with a pad and a long zoom camera would sit in the parking lot across from the warehouse and watch it.

It took only two days of this to catch someone in the act.  It amounted to was a massive internal theft case that resulted in the prosecution of three employees because of their parts in the matter.  Sometimes it takes a more traditional approach to employee theft investigation to get results.

In Like A Lion

There is an expression about the month of March. It says March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb. While my March has not been very lion like, I can relate the theory to clothing security.

Using anti theft devices on clothes makes a powerhouse statement. It says that clothing security is here to stay. Using economically feasible cheap labels and cheap tags lets you create a roar to the thieving community.

The more labels and tags you use on your clothes, the louder your statement is. It will be stronger and stronger driving away the bad seeds that were previously infiltrating your stores. The more you start to incorporate into your clothing security plans the better chance you will have of reducing your shrink losses.

The word will spread. While you will always have to stay vigilant with your shrink reduction plans, you should be able to start to breathe a sign of relief. You can then go out like a lamb and care for your paying customers.

Crowd control in the loss prevention game

I learned a series of valuable lessons on Saturday.  The most important of all of is that if you are approaching a suspect and they are with a group of other people you have to separate them from that group no matter what.  If not, your endeavors to ensure proper retail theft prevention may prove for naught.

A perfect example of this occurred this past weekend.  A suspect was spotted on the floor, followed throughout the store via cameras by myself and the LPM as she selected a fragrance and used her nails and teeth to remove the plastic anti shoplifting shell from the item.  Once that was accomplished she discarded everything but the perfume itself in various parts of the store until she left where she was stopped by another member of the team under orders of the LPM.

The problem took place when she was being escorted back inside.  Before she had been stopped she had rendezvoused with several friends who were not only following her back inside the store, but also creating a scene.  At one point I thought they would start a riot.

While this was occurring she was claiming she no longer had the item.  I directed my LPM via radio to the locations of the anti shoplifting shell and the other discarded pieces but she insisted that the perfume was still in the store.  A friend of hers directed the LPM to a display rack and produced the missing perfume.

We were shocked and under the immediate assumption it was a bad stop until I reviewed the video.  Not once had the suspect come within ten feet of the display.  That led us to the conclusion that while the group was creating a scene one of them planted the item there AFTER returning to the store.

The moral of this story of retail theft prevention: kick the crowds to the curb and just take the suspect.

How It All Adds Up

The term Background Checks is really a multi dimensional set of sometimes-complex data that only truly competent and reliable background check experts can disseminate. A seemingly generic background check is usually made up of smaller more specific parts including a criminal background check, an employee background check, and other parts of pre employment screening.

A criminal background check will look for any felony or misdemeanor convictions. While most companies a really looking for felony convictions, if someone has a vast string of misdemeanors, it’s good to watch out for the pattern of wrongdoing. This type of check can include any traffic violations. Even if your potential employee is not required to drive for the job, it might give insight into how they operate outside of work.

Employee background checks can be specifically geared toward previous work history. Did the applicant really work for the company for the last five years, or did they only work four and a half and are trying to cover up an employment gap? Did they really hold the last position stated on their resume, or was that an embellishment?

The final piece is other pre employment screening. Can you run a name and address check? Have they changed their name? You may want to run a previous name to see if there are any negative items that come back. What about previous addresses? If they have moved frequently is there a reason?

While one or two things on their own may not seem so bad, the more information you can gather, the better picture you can create of who is really applying for your job.

It Not Just About You

People do some crazy things when they are drunk. I have some wild stories about a few college buddies. It seems like they always start with “ Yeah this one time we were out drinking…” While some of them are pretty down right funny, others can be a little scary.

Over the years I have apprehended my share of shoplifters who stole under the influence. Generally when we called the local police in, they would discover that the liquor had been stolen from another retailer as well.

While I typically try to focus my shrink reduction strategies around my own store, I do think about how another retailer’s losses are directly related to mine.

If the liquor store down the street was using some sort of liquor bottle security like bottle locks, would we be seeing the same amount of losses?

I know that Alpha Security makes a comprehensive line of bottle locks and other forms of liquor bottle security. Would it really be that hard to use them on your product? Sometimes I want to go over and volunteer my services. I want to tell them to do us all a favor and increase their bottle security.

I am sure that if I am suffering losses, so is every one else in the neighborhood. One small step for them could make a huge impact for the rest of us.

Once Upon a Time

Once upon a time, I worked for a high-end retailer. It was a very different atmosphere as the entire staff was basically scared to death of their clientele. They were so afraid that they would offend a client and the client would never shop with them again. To a certain extent, I understood. A large majority of the sales associates were commission based and a loss of client could mean a serious cut in their paycheck each month.

What I struggled with was convincing the employees, and sometimes the management, that clothing security was a necessity that if done correctly would not impede their mission of world-class service.

We half-heartedly put security tags on clothes. Fitting room doors were routinely left unlocked because it was easier than having tan associate be available to unlock them. It really was no surprise that we routinely found price tags stuffed into corners of the fitting rooms.

I talked till I was blue in the face about the importance of clothing security. I would walk the store locking doors and putting security tags on clothes.

It wasn’t until one night when a gang of about five guys walked into the store grabbed every designer purse they could carry and ran out the door. They all came crying to me as if I had a magical way to bring all of their product back. I unfortunately had to tell them that they would be without those sales to their customers.

Because they didn’t listen to my initial advice, they had to turn away customers because they were out of merchandise. It was a hard lesson for everyone to learn.

The positive side was that I now had the full attention of the store, and together we created one of the best clothing security programs the store had ever seen.
