We’ve all seen them; we’ve all heard their piercing sound, those annoying little devices known as clothing security tags. Security tags on clothes can be especially inconvenient in the fitting room. Securing your removal keys is a no-brainer

Every type of security device is removed in one of two methods: the legitimate way using a corresponding removal key, and the illegitimate way which usually involves a pair of pliers or bolt-cutters. Savvy shoplifters know how to identify the legitimate tools and always look for opportunities to get their hands on them. Every so often they succeed thanks to the laziness, forgetfulness, or plain carelessness of an employee.

I’ve seen some companies secure the tools right to the cash wrap and others require their employees to carry them on their person or stash them in a register. For stores using Spider Wraps, 2 Alarm, or 3 Alarm retail anti theft devices only the last two methods are plausible as it would prove impossible to remove a Spider Wrap with a tool that was welded to a counter. In my experience, the best way to ensure the convenient removal of your Spider Wraps is to make it impossible for your tools to wander. Obviously there is no sure-fire practice as every store operates differently, but I am basing my suggestion on a fairly ‘textbook’ store setup.

In most stores there is usually a space (or cubby-hole if you prefer) somewhere directly beneath or nearby the register. Installing a small storage space, similar to a hide-a-key on the underside of the space provides you with a discreet area to protect your removal tools from prying eyes while also keeping them in an area your employees will remember since it will be so unique.

Better Awareness, Better Shrink

Shrink, or inventory losses, is not just about stopping shoplifters using elaborate schemes and tactics. It isn’t even about expensive retail security programs that some companies try to make you believe you have to have or you can never control your shrink.

The end game is all about awareness. Are you aware of what your top merchandise losses are? Sleek and Discreet

After spending years in Loss Prevention, I understand the need for discretion and stealth very well. With out either of these traits, I would not have gotten very far in my career. It is rather hard to stop shoplifting from occurring in your stores if you are loud and boisterous.

I remember a story my old mentor told me. He had been standing in a checkout line behind one of his shoplifters. This wasn’t just any old shoplifter either. He had been hitting the stores for months and my mentor finally had enough to make an apprehension.

They had stuffed a box with merchandise and were paying for only the box, not the contents. After the transaction finished, my mentor could make the apprehension as they left the store.

Well, sure enough, another associate was walking by and shouted “Hey! Have you caught any shoplifters today?” My mentor’s cover was gone and the shoplifter left without any product. The case had been blown. While the shoplifter never came back to the store, any chance of recovering the previously stolen product, or securing restitution was completely destroyed.

Discipline Breeds Morale

Companies have spent countless hours developing and executing policies and procedures for their stores. Protocol for every possible situation has been written down time and time again in countless employee handbooks. The thought is that discipline breeds morale.

When there is a tangible standard on how all employees are to conduct themselves and their business, it is easier to enforce those policies. When someone steps out of line, the rest of the work force knows there will be consequences for those actions. They also know that the terms of those consequences will be equal regardless of who violated a policy.

Years ago I worked for a company whose policies and procedures were lacking. Most operating procedures were made up as we went along, often reactionary to an issue that had happened. One such incident was a shortage in a cash register.

This employee theft investigation started when a random drawer audit was completed on a rarely used register till. I received a call stating we were almost $200 dollars short. When I started to ask questions, I realized that we had set ourselves up for failure.

The till was in a remote corner of the store. Even though the register was rarely used, we had been keeping a cash bank of $200 dollars in it. No one ever thought to pull the money out. No one every thought to do a daily drawer audit. Clearly it was an employee theft situation. The problem was tracking down who had figured out our lack of controls.

We didn’t even know where in the last three months to begin our employee theft investigation. It had been that long since the register had last been used for a cash transaction. Needless to say, the money was gone for good. This was a case where the employee theft got the best of us.

If we had clear procedures in place, the drawer would never have been unaccounted for. Even if someone did get the cash, we could have had a better chance of tracking them through a shorter window of time.

Not Just For The Shoplifters

Clothing security is generally spoken of in the context of shoplifters. It is easy to qualify programs in terms of external theft. I suppose it is more tangible. In some stores, the only time you see loss prevention employees is when they have a shoplifter in custody. Or when they are walking out with the local police department who has taken custody of said shoplifter.
