Dealing In Scarcity

Scarcity is created when demand for a product exceeds the natural ability to create that item.  When an item is scarce, it drives the price of that item up. It is the driving principal of supply and demand. In the case of wines and hard liquor, many of these items are scarce by definition as they may take several years, or decades, to create.

The more scarce or valuable these items are, the more desirable they become. Pure want is a harsh feeling to overcome. Often shoplifters or employees steal because of that pure want of something they deem valuable, or scarce.

Bottle security can play a dual role in this. Bottle locks, as a prominent form of liquor bottle security, show a would be thief that you are protecting your valuables from theft.

Having any sort of liquor bottle security will also reiterate that the items guarded are desirable and or valuable. Bottle security can create that intense want. What draws your eye in a store, some trinket thrown about on a display shelf, or the one that is closely guarded with obvious security measures surrounding it?

Of course you look at the items under lock and key. They now have a heightened perceived value compared to bottles that are not locked. You can reduce your shrink and drive your sales with bottle locks. By understanding the outlying principals, you can make scarcity work for you.

EAS Tags, Not Going Away Any Time Soon

Electronic Article Surveillance is at the heart of most retail theft prevention programs. Checkpoint security tags have been a long-standing staple in anti shoplifting devices, and rightly so. These little tags are widely known in the thieving community as problematic devices to avoid. They take way to long to deactivate, if ever. Checkpoint security tags draw way to much attention when they set off any of the Checkpoint security system alarms. These little plastic UFOs have thwarted many an attempt to steal.

Of course the days of Checkpoint security tags only being little round UFO looking things attached to the bottom of a garment are long gone. Now, thanks to the innovation at Checkpoint Systems, these hard tags come in a multitude of shapes, sizes and colors. Each tag is geared to fit an individual product’s unique challenges for anti shoplifting counter measures.

Every one of Checkpoint systems’ EAS tags is designed to work simultaneously within a Checkpoint security system of soft tags, hard tags, towers and antennas. Because the hard tags are reusable, you don’t have to worry about excessive replenishment expenses. The tags are also designed to be reliable each and every time they are attached onto your products.

There are many great features and benefits to using EAS tags. It is safe to say that they will be around for a very long time.

The Up Side of a Neutral Referral

One of the arguments against running background checks or pre employment screening is the lack of information garnered from neutral referrals from previous employers. A neutral referral started to become common practice in the 80’s and early 90’s. It all started as a way to avoid lawsuits based off of defamation of character. When a company risks those sorts of lawsuits from their previous employees, it does make some sense.

As a result, most employers now will only give the dates of employment and the last job title the employee held. Many feel that this limited information can render a background check for pre employment screening useless.

Background check experts know differently. The neutral referral can give quick and accurate information to the background check experts. When some companies are finding over 50% of applicants are not accurate in the information they submit on a resume, every little bit helps.

A neutral referral can shed some light on where a person was or wasn’t during an employment period. Sometimes gaps are discovered. Sometimes, after a few follow up questions with the applicant, the real reason they left comes out.

You can even determine if a person never held the job title they are claiming. It could mean they are actually under qualified for a certain position. They might actually be asking for too much money based on their previous experience.

Never discredit the importance of any information you can find, even if it is just a neutral referral.

Put Your Bottles On Guard

Shoplifters can incur shrink (or inventory losses) to your liquor and wine bottles in two general ways. The first way is to consume the alcohol right inside your store. The other is to physically remove the bottle from your establishment without paying –stealing it.

Liquor bottle security is more than just hiding your bottles away behind lock and key. Bottle security is about putting up your guard to theft in its various forms. Alpha Security makes a wide range of bottle lock solutions in their EASy Bottle line of products.

One such product is Alpha Security’s EASy Guarde Bottle Lock. This lock has the best of both worlds in it. As a cap placed over the mouth of the bottle, it provides security to the contents. No one can open the bottle to consume the alcohol in the store.

The EASy Guarde is embedded with an alarm if a shoplifter attempts to steal the bottle. This type of bottle security is a similar form of technology that most retailers use to protect their inventory from shoplifters.

The S3 Detacher is easy for any of your employees to use. It is also easy to maintain control of the keys if you want restricted access by members of your staff.

Put your bottles on guard with the EASy Guarde bottle locks. Your profits will thank you in the end.

Checkpoint Tags: Picking Up Where People Leave Off

I was alone at my first LP job when I started watching a woman on camera that entered with a crumpled, empty shopping bag. The previous day I finished training and was released to detain shoplifters. I hadn’t made a solo arrest yet; I was incredibly nervous and secretly hoped this was nothing. I wanted my first stop to be with another agent to assist with surveillance and back me up during the apprehension. Although I could feel myself shaking, I went to the sales floor to perform live observation; after all, it was my responsibility to maintain the store’s clothing security.

After locating the customer, I watched her check merchandise for Checkpoint tags and select a handful of tops without clothing alarms. She placed them on a rounder, held the shopping bag under the merchandise, and slipped each item off its hanger so it fell in. With this, I realized I must stop her when she exited. As she headed to the door, my nerves took over and I was hit with a wave of nausea. I was going to be sick and made a beeline for the restroom. I went to find the subject when my queasiness had passed, but of course she was gone. This wasn’t my proudest moment and while my boss was kind about it, I felt I had failed to preserve my store’s clothing security. Although I was trained and had good intentions, I’m still a human who is limited in my capacity to keep all merchandise from theft.

Employees can make mistakes; they call in sick, they take breaks, and no one can afford hiring enough people to watch all merchandise. Retailers that understand this utilize clothing security tags to fill in the gaps that naturally occur if a mission as significant as clothing security is left only to people. Clothing alarms are most effective when used uniformly and on merchandise that would hurt the store the most to lose. That way, if a rookie investigator has anxiety, it won’t break the business.

Do You Know What The Norm Is?

When you start out as a rookie Loss Prevention agent the world is filled with shoplifters. Every person that walks through the door is a thief. You are so ready to catch your first crook that any and every little flinch is a signal that they are about to steal. Unfortunately, the subtleties of distinction cannot be taught in a manual or computer training lesson. To really evaluate the red flags, you must first know what is normal human shopping behavior.

I always start my new trainees out by countless hours of surveillance. It gives them a chance to hone their skills.  It gives them a chance to really observe how we, as a society, shop for our clothes.

Some cultures try on clothing right in the middle of the selling floor, instead of in a fitting room. Others may use their forearms to measure a pair of jeans instead of trying them on at all.

Often my rookies will mistake that for a customer looking for the security tags on clothes. They are convinced that the clothing security tags will be torn off n a matter of seconds. I usually tell them to keep watching and let me know what happens.

Sometimes they will miss the security tags on clothes deterring a shoplifter because they see a customer put merchandise back down. They missed some of the other warning signs, and potentially would have given up completely on that case.

Training is important to be able to understand what to look for. Practical experience helps refine these observations to make accurate and effective shoplifting cases.

The Lipstick Index

Lately, our health and beauty section of the store has been seeing an increase in shoplifting attempts. It makes sense, I guess. When times are tough, people want something to make them feel better. I read an article about recessions and how everyone has their own indicators about how bad the economy is. One in particular that caught my eye was the Lipstick/ Nail Polish index.

The Lipstick/ Nail Polish Index is basically an influx in sales of lipstick, and now nail polish as well. That new pop of color can bring a smile back to a woman who is down on her luck for a rather reasonable splurge. She may not be able to afford a new pair of shoes or a new outfit. A tube of lipstick on the other hand is more financially attainable.

Same principle goes for shoplifters. A woman wants to feel a little better, but may not be able to afford the lipstick, so she steals it instead. Trying to prevent shoplifting of this nature is often tricky. These are the opportunists who don’t intend to steal, but are presented with an opportunity and her wants get the best of her.

This is where using retail anti theft devices is crucial. Because these are not your typical hardened criminals, the simple application of a retail anti theft device like and EAS tag makes a huge impact. The would be shoplifter won’t dare try to take that extra step to deactivate it. Their want will be put back into check and the customer will leave the store as a customer, not a shoplifter.

The Cheapest Route to Retail Security

Anti-theft devices come in many forms. Among those variations are spider wraps, coat cables, hard tags, RF labels, shark tags, ink tags, keeper cases, the list goes on. Many anti-theft devices can become expensive, especially for smaller retailers and it may be difficult to get started with a large amount of overhead when you are just starting to use anti-shoplifting devices.

The most vital and inexpensive way to secure your merchandise is with cheap tags and cheap labels. EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance) labels can be applied to almost any hard lines item, while EAS tags can be applied to almost every soft lines item. These two anti-shoplifting devices can be a great tool in retail security at almost any level of retailer and are very inexpensive and easy to use. They can be applied to any type of merchandise regardless of its shape or size and will not damage the product. EAS labels and tags are great deterrents to potential shoplifters, and can be a great way to alert you to potential theft activity in your store. If you are looking to just get started with retail security, or if you have been using anti-theft devices for years, cheap tags and cheap labels are where it’s at in retail security.

Who Do You Trust With Your Assets

Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint security tags are amongst the best in the business. Sure, you can go out just about anywhere and get some inexpensive knock offs, but why would you?

When you are making an investment to stop shoplifting losses in your store, trust only the best name in the business.  Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint security tags are reliable. They are individually tested to ensure consistent results. They make a point to not having any duds sent out with their name on it.

Often other RF labels and RF security tags are foreign imports that are quickly and cheaply made. There generally aren’t the same quality control standards. You can have multiple RF labels on a roll that do not work. Why pay for a product that is only marginally good? Expect the best for your merchandise.

If you are taking the time and effort to truly invest in a shrink reduction plan, do it right the first time. Make no mistakes in which you will trust with your most precious assets: your merchandise, your customers, and your store. You will be happier from the start. Quality products that are done right each and every time absolutely guaranteed.

All About the Customer Service

Very few things make me more proud than to have one of my employees come to me with their news of making a recovery. I’m not talking about recovering their area of the store, as in cleaning up. I am talking about recovering clothes from a potential shoplifter.

Every once in a while, one of my employees will respond to an EAS alarm and get a huge surprise. For example, just the other day a cashier heard the EAS go off and she went to offer assistance to that customer. Well, the lady that set off the alarm was so shocked not only because she missed the anti theft devices on our merchandise, but because someone had come to greet her.

She saw the cashier getting closer, and quickly pulled several clothing items out of her purse, threw them at the cashier and ran out the door. The cashier was in total awe and it took her a moment to realize that the clothes had all of our tags still on them. She had no intention of stopping a shoplifter; she was just trying to give good customer service. It was that service that prevented a loss for our store.
