Dealing In Scarcity

Scarcity is created when demand for a product exceeds the natural ability to create that item. When an item is scarce, it drives the price of that item up. It is the driving principal of supply and demand. In the case of wines and hard liquor, many of these items are scarce by definition as they may take several years, or decades, to create.

The more scarce or valuable these items are, the more desirable they become. Pure want is a harsh feeling to overcome. Often shoplifters or employees steal because of that pure want of something they deem valuable, or scarce.

The Up Side of a Neutral Referral

One of the arguments against running background checks or pre employment screening is the lack of information garnered from neutral referrals from previous employers. A neutral referral started to become common practice in the 80’s and early 90’s. It all started as a way to avoid lawsuits based off of defamation of character. When a company risks those sorts of lawsuits from their previous employees, it does make some sense.

As a result, most employers now will only give the dates of employment and the last job title the employee held. Many feel that this limited information can render a background check for pre employment screening useless.

Background check experts know differently. The neutral referral can give quick and accurate information to the background check experts. When some companies are finding over 50% of applicants are not accurate in the information they submit on a resume, every little bit helps.

A neutral referral can shed some light on where a person was or wasn’t during an employment period. Sometimes gaps are discovered. Sometimes, after a few follow up questions with the applicant, the real reason they left comes out.

You can even determine if a person never held the job title they are claiming. It could mean they are actually under qualified for a certain position. They might actually be asking for too much money based on their previous experience.

Checkpoint Tags: Picking Up Where People Leave Off

I was alone at my first LP job when I started watching a woman on camera that entered with a crumpled, empty shopping bag. The previous day I finished training and was released to detain shoplifters. I hadn’t made a solo arrest yet; I was incredibly nervous and secretly hoped this was nothing. I wanted my first stop to be with another agent to assist with surveillance and back me up during the apprehension. Although I could feel myself shaking, I went to the sales floor to perform live observation; after all, it was my responsibility to maintain the store’s clothing security.

After locating the customer, I watched her check merchandise for Checkpoint tags and select a handful of tops without clothing alarms. Employees can make mistakes; they call in sick, they take breaks, and no one can afford hiring enough people to watch all merchandise. Do You Know What The Norm Is?

When you start out as a rookie Loss Prevention agent the world is filled with shoplifters. Every person that walks through the door is a thief. You are so ready to catch your first crook that any and every little flinch is a signal that they are about to steal. Unfortunately, the subtleties of distinction cannot be taught in a manual or computer training lesson. To really evaluate the red flags, you must first know what is normal human shopping behavior.

I always start my new trainees out by countless hours of surveillance. It gives them a chance to hone their skills. It gives them a chance to really observe how we, as a society, shop for our clothes.

Some cultures try on clothing right in the middle of the selling floor, instead of in a fitting room. Others may use their forearms to measure a pair of jeans instead of trying them on at all.

Often my rookies will mistake that for a customer looking for the security tags on clothes. They are convinced that the clothing security tags will be torn off n a matter of seconds. I usually tell them to keep watching and let me know what happens.

Sometimes they will miss the security tags on clothes deterring a shoplifter because they see a customer put merchandise back down. They missed some of the other warning signs, and potentially would have given up completely on that case.

Training is important to be able to understand what to look for. Practical experience helps refine these observations to make accurate and effective shoplifting cases.

The Lipstick Index

Lately, our health and beauty section of the store has been seeing an increase in shoplifting attempts. It makes sense, I guess. When times are tough, people want something to make them feel better. I read an article about recessions and how everyone has their own indicators about how bad the economy is. One in particular that caught my eye was the Lipstick/ Nail Polish index.

The Lipstick/ Nail Polish Index is basically an influx in sales of lipstick, and now nail polish as well. That new pop of color can bring a smile back to a woman who is down on her luck for a rather reasonable splurge. She may not be able to afford a new pair of shoes or a new outfit. A tube of lipstick on the other hand is more financially attainable.

Same principle goes for shoplifters. A woman wants to feel a little better, but may not be able to afford the lipstick, so she steals it instead. Trying to prevent shoplifting of this nature is often tricky. These are the opportunists who don’t intend to steal, but are presented with an opportunity and her wants get the best of her.

All About the Customer Service

Very few things make me more proud than to have one of my employees come to me with their news of making a recovery. I’m not talking about recovering their area of the store, as in cleaning up. I am talking about recovering clothes from a potential shoplifter.

Every once in a while, one of my employees will respond to an EAS alarm and get a huge surprise. For example, just the other day a cashier heard the EAS go off and she went to offer assistance to that customer. Well, the lady that set off the alarm was so shocked not only because she missed the anti theft devices on our merchandise, but because someone had come to greet her.

She saw the cashier getting closer, and quickly pulled several clothing items out of her purse, threw them at the cashier and ran out the door.
