Don’t think you can’t compete

As a small business owner, it can be very difficult to try and compete with larger big box chains. They often have more resources with buying power and price control than what you might. They also have a more recognizable name to draw in customers. One things for sure though, shoplifters aren’t just limited to the big boxes. They are more than willing to steal from you without a second thought.

Don’t be left trying to employ the same anti shoplifting tactics that work for the big box stores. Their budgets might price you out of the water, leaving you more vulnerable as you try to prevent retail theft. Instead, use anti theft devices designed with your budget in mind. Use cheap tags and cheap labels that are reliable and budget friendly.

You don’t need to spend extravagant money to protect your store from falling pry to shoplifters. Let the big boxes fritter away their money on the expensive name brand tags and labels. Use the low cost versions. They are low cost because they are made here in the USA, not because they are chintzy knock-offs.

Is It All About The Fancy Package?

When I was growing up, I remember seeing generic brand items in the grocery store. They were just a white-labeled can or box with the product in big, bold black letters. It was not a very attractive package to look at. Even at a young age, I was very skeptical about how good the contents really were.

Over the years, companies have realized that if they want to sell and item, they need to have attractive packaging. Now just about every retailer from food to clothes to gadgets and gizmos have their own store branded items; their generics, if you will.

Retail security is no different from all the other markets out there. You can find generic versions of name brand anti theft devices anywhere. Some are beautifully packaged, while some are still in black and white minimalism.

The key is to find cheap tags and cheap labels that are reliable. Be wary of foreign made tags and labels, as they may only look attractive on the outside. Their inner workings may end up being less than desirable.

Don’ t rely on just the name, or fancy packaging. Use a trusted source for your EAS labels and tags.

Too Hot For Coats

Now I know that the Northeast just had a big storm blow through with an unusual amount of snow for this late in the spring. For the rest of the country, it is time for us to put our heavy winter coats away for the season.

Clothing security is more than just shrink reduction plans and high tech anti theft devices. It is about the complete picture of how to protect your clothes from theft- both internal and external.

Being able to identify common traits in shoplifters narrows down your scope of vision. It lets you hone in on the real shoplifters, not the offbeat customers.

One of the traits I watch for is someone who is wearing a heavy or bulky coat during uncharacteristically suited warm weather. Now it is possible that they really are just cold, but chances are, they are trying to steal and need someplace to conceal your merchandise.

It’s not a completely fool proof system. It is just one that stands out in my head as we make the transition to summer.

A Disturbing Situation

Several months ago I began working for a department store that was unlike my other positions because they didn’t utilize any type of asset protection technology, while my previous employers all used some form of a Checkpoint security system. What was difficult about working for this store was not only did their retail theft prevention strategy rely solely on apprehensions, but as a result of their lack of security tags, the store attracted a distinctive type of thief that I had encountered sporadically in my previous years of experience, but not in this volume. The troubling situation I’m referring to is adult females shoplifting while their children are with them.

As I mentioned, I had encountered cases involving mothers and their offspring acting as accomplices and detained the occasional parent with their kid in tow. However, I had never witnessed the kind of neglect, endangerment, and blatant disregard for a child’s well-being as I did at this retailer. These women committed acts of retail theft that led to situations that confused and terrified their children and often jeopardized their safety during the arrest. One subject hid a pair of denim jeans under her baby carrier in the stroller, another threw a hat in her diaper bag, and one woman even concealed jewelry in her infant’s diaper. Upon detainment, we would have to not only deal with a difficult shoplifter, but also screaming toddlers and the question of what to do with them when mommy goes to jail with the police.

I believe that the frequency of these incidents were the result of this store’s lack of a comprehensive retail theft prevention strategy. These mothers could steal the high-price merchandise available at other department stores, but this retailer didn’t pose the problem of defeating a Checkpoint security system in front of their kids. In addition, shopping with children in tow tends to set the thief at ease that they don’t look suspicious and may deflect the attention of an inexperienced LP associate.

Don’t Feed The Strays

Growing up, I used to see stray animals around the house fairly frequently. My older brother would always try to stop me, as I would run into the house to try to find some food to feed them. At the time I thought he was being mean, nut I now understand why I shouldn’t feed the strays.

Shoplifters are like those stray animals. If they get what they are after the first time, they will come back over and over again until they are caught. Not only will they come back, but also each time they will be bolder and hungrier for more.

I like to think of bottle security like my older brother. It’s not there to make anyone feel bad, just there to offer a little extra protection. Bottle security like bottle locks make it easy to install and painless to use. No one has to go out of his or her way to kick a stray (or a shoplifter) to the curb. Bottle locks are just a silent signal that they need to move on down the road, because no one is getting anything for free here.

I don’t try to feed stray animals anymore. Because of the billions of hours I have spent catching shoplifters, I can attest that it really is better to send them packing before they even try to steal. Bottle security helps send them away.

Something To Prove

The sound of a clothing alarm going off used to haunt me in my dreams. It was for a couple of reasons. One was that the cashiers in my store seemed to forget to deactivate or detach the clothing security tags. Actually some would forget, others claimed they knew which pieces were tagged, so they only had to deactivate those items. Needless to say, the clothing alarms at the doors found a way to go off continually throughout the day.

The other reason was that I was new to the business and every time the alarm went off I would race to my camera system to see who set the alarm off. I was determined to catch someone in the act of stealing, even if they were already out the door.

That was many years ago. I no longer feel the need to prove something to myself or to my stores. I also learned how to train my cashiers better on the importance of proper deactivation. I knew how to explain all the parts of customer service and clothing security and how they are interrelated. I also knew how to explain that if they deactivate correctly the first time, it is that much less work for them later on.

It was a lesson just as much for me as it was for my cashiers. I took something away form those early experiences that helped my success throughout my career.

Avoiding Spider Bites

As I new homeowner, I spend a lot of my free time in one of two places; the hardware store and in the home décor section of big box retailers. Having worked for a home improvement warehouse in the past, my eye is still instinctively trained to watch out for the high shrink items as I walk around.

One of the things that my local store uses, which we did not, is Spider Wraps. These ingenious little devices are cords that cross a box like the ribbon on a present with a round attachment in the middle. They serve a few purposes in their role to prevent shoplifting.

The first is easy, any time you use a retail anti theft device to protect your inventory, your shrink will decrease. The next is when used on an item like a power drill; you keep the product inside its case and packaging. The Spider Wrap protects the case from being opened. I have numerous apprehensions where the merchandise was removed from its case and concealed in a bag or under a coat.

Finally, if the perpetrator cannot open the box, they may try to steal the entire thing. The Spider Wrap will do its job by sounding an alarm if the box is stolen. Don’t forget the squeal it will emit if the wrap is tampered with. All in all, it is safe to say that Spider Wraps are a highly effective tool to prevent shoplifting.

The Most Controllable Expense

It has long been said that payroll is the most controllable expense a store has. You have control over the wages spent, the hours worked, allowable overtime, and can increase and reduce as needed. Sounds like it makes sense.

I would have to disagree. When companies are reducing their work force to bare bones standards, some retailers are dangerously only having one employee in a store at any given point in time. I think that is just setting someone up to be hurt, or worse.

Instead of cutting payroll, try cutting out your shrink. It is easier than you might think. Using cost efficient cheap tags and cheap labels for your retail security is almost guaranteed to reduce your inventory losses. Anti theft devices are notoriously effective deterrents against theft.

Since most stores do not have any way to financially allow for an inventory loss, that dollar comes right off the bottom line. A significant reduction in shrink can make a huge impact in bringing those bottom line profits back up to par.

Don’t put your store and your employees at risk but reducing your payroll to the point where it is almost nonexistent. Reduce your shrink instead through retail security and anti theft devices.

Why The EAS System IS So Effective

Sometimes we just take things for granted. We know that certain things work and certain things don’t. How often do we ever stop and think about why something works better than something else. Take EAS systems like Checkpoint security tags and Checkpoint labels as an effective means to stop shoplifting.

Shoplifters ultimately rely on the need to remain inconspicuous and anonymous. A shoplifter’s greatest trait is to be able to dash into a store, under the radar, and get out before anyone notices they are there. When you say time is of the essence, no one can relate more than a shoplifter.

When you add another variable into the equation, such as Checkpoint security tags and Checkpoint labels, that precious time needed to make a successful theft starts to dwindle. If a shoplifter is now faced with the task of unauthorized removal of the tags and labels, they run the risk of being detected.

Since there is no easy, quick way to remove the tags without the proper deactivators or detachers, the addition of tags and labels are essential to being able to stop shoplifting. It is far better to rob a thief of time, than for a thief to rob you of your inventory.

The Green Solution

Many companies are making the transition into a more environmentally conscious mode. Whether it be all natural or organic foods, sustainable building designs or just reduction of waste, the green movement is sweeping the nation. More designers are using green materials in their clothes, so the next logical step is to use green anti theft devices for your clothing security.

Environmentally safe and inexpensive cheap tags are the ideal solution. EAS systems employ the use of hard tags to deter shoplifters. These two part plastic devices clamp a pin through the material creating an impenetrable bond. The EAS tags are virtually unbeatable without the proper detachers.

They are a green solution as the tags can be reused over and over again. If one half is lost, another piece can easily be used as all EAS tag halves work with each other. There is no need to create extra waste by disposing of the hard tags. The reusable nature of the tags also helps to keep the costs down by eliminating the need for continual reorders.
