Good thing I checked inside my jeans

I was looking through the pockets of a pair of jeans the other day as I was trying to get some laundry done. I am forever leaving random receipts or chap stick in my pants, so I make a habit of always checking before any thing goes into the washer.

Sure enough, I felt something as I was searching the pockets. Strange, I thought. I can’t get anything out. As I took another look, I realized whatever I found was actually on the inside of my jeans, not in the pocket.

As it turns out, there was a little pouch inside my jeans that was holding a clothing security tag. Now, since I haven’t set any clothing alarms off at any store I have been in while wearing the jeans, I can safely assume that the tag was properly deactivated at the register when I bought them.

I can also assume that the tag in question was more than likely a Checkpoint tag. Some of the cheap import knock off labels have a habit of reactivating themselves if they are not properly cut out and discarded, like my little pouch instructed me to do.

It’s Never Too Late to Think About The Prom

There is a high school around the corner from my house that is proudly displaying their upcoming prom on the billboard. As I walk through the produce section of my local grocery store, there are boxed corsages of orchids and lilies just waiting to be scooped up by an anxious young high schooler who forgot to order one in advance. The department stores have their ball gowns front and center to catch a girl’s eye as she passes through. Ahh, Prom Time.

It’s the time of year when young love is at it’s finest. It’s also a big time for overextended high school students to start wardrobing. Prom dresses and accessories are not in danger of being stolen. This isn’t a time to be concerned with how to prevent shoplifting. Not all internal theft is merchandise…

When it comes to employee theft there is nothing more irritating, more troublesome, than the theft of supplies. Many employees do it; some deliberately, some accidentally, but it is so commonplace it is almost universally accepted as a simple fact of life regardless of the business. The problem with it being so ‘accepted’ is that it is almost always disregarded and usually goes completely unpunished. It is that kind of mentality that forces companies to waste millions of dollars on supplies.

Not only is there the waste factor, but there is the inherent frustration aspect of your business being short, or completely out of, a supply when it really needs it. I can recall numerous instances where pens, paper towels, cleaning supplies, and even toilet paper has suddenly gone missing only to be discovered later that another employee had pilfered an obscene amount for their personal use.

A recent incident involved our warehouse becoming short on the store supplies of paper towels and water jugs for the water coolers. At first it was just once in a while, but eventually entire stockpiles were going missing within days of shipments coming in. After a lengthy stake-out and employee theft investigation we found that a ten-year veteran of the company had been moving large amounts of supplies to his vehicle over the course of his shifts at the beginning of each week and stockpiling them at his personal residence. When it was acknowledged as a case of employee theft and he was brought in for an interview he denied any wrongdoing even when confronted with hard video evidence. Eventually he admitted that he had been stealing supplies for years but claimed that he shouldn’t be punished since ‘everyone did it’.

Don’t allow your employees to think ANY kind of internal theft is okay. Send them a message that stealing is wrong even if everyone does it.

Take a pit stop

I do a fair amount of traveling in my free time. Whether I am in and out of airports, or travel stops on the highway, I see the same clothing security breakdowns time and time again.

Often these retailers are in an open area where there is a significant amount of foot traffic. The majority of this foot traffic is also transient in nature, as in all the shoppers are travelers from another city, or state, maybe even another country.

If the retailers have no anti theft devices on their clothes, it is very easy for someone to slip in to the store, take what they want and slip back into the passing crowds of people never to be seen from again.

It is an opportunistic nightmare. Most of those shoplifters probably aren’t on their holiday with the intention of finding a place to steal. They saw an opportunity present itself and get the better of them. The key rational is that they will never be back, so no one will notice them.

Keep your eyes peeled for the traveler. They may be trying to take your merchandise on a vacation too.

Retail security with limited resources

I have been brought into a new store recently as a loss prevention supervisor and have found my resources extremely lacking and my workload practically back breaking. The store has little in the way of available anti theft devices, no retail security cameras to truly speak of, and the staff is made up of people who are either internal theft suspects or completely clueless in the ways of shrink reduction practices.

I know that I am not the first loss prevention professional to encounter such a daunting situation upon being assigned a store. In fact it is not the first time that I, myself, have been put in such a situation. However there are those among our ranks, usually the newer members of the profession, who might balk or retreat when faced with such obstacles. For those in the latter camp I have two pieces of advice that might make things easier to tackle.

The first is common sense. No matter how bad things in your store might be, don’t try to tackle every problem at once. Take your issues one at a time in a priority of worst-case to easy-peasy and you’ll save yourself a ton of headaches.

Secondly, don’t let a lack of resources stop you. Rather, get inventive with what you have at your disposal. No cameras? Enforce a 100% tagging policy. Not enough staff? Let your cashiers be your eyes and ears. Improvisation is key to solving problems.

Preventing retail theft in a ‘big box store’

If you have never worked Loss Prevention in a ‘big box store’ you may find yourself wondering why exactly they would need such things like anti-theft devices in the first place. Most stores that are of the ‘big box’ model require memberships to shop there and the vast majority of their products are massive in size or quantity making the possibility of theft difficult. In a way such store models seem to prevent retail theft just by design.
