Checkpoint Labels and how to hide them

They are a common sight in retail theft prevention, those little white strips usually glued to the back of a fragrance or a plastic packaging for headphones, or even found tucked inside a DVD case.  They are Checkpoint Labels and they are among the more versatile anti-shoplifting tools available to those who wish to stop shoplifting in their store.  The problem is they are so common a sight that anyone who has ever walked into any retail establishment knows of their existence and those who are looking to steal from you know how to identify and defeat them.  The challenge is to find ways to hide the Checkpoint Labels in such a way that it seems as though they are not present at all.

It is a theme present in one of more fundamental concepts of retail theft prevention; creating the illusion that there is little or no security on hand to stop or watch a theft take place.  Making use of the small size of the Checkpoint Labels you can hide them almost anywhere; the seam of a jacket, the pockets of a pair of jeans, the brim of a hat, the possibilities are only limited by your vision.  By hiding these diminutive anti-shoplifting devices well enough you can create the illusion for shoplifters that they don’t need to use any tools or measures to defeat your labels which will prove otherwise when they pass through the gate of your Checkpoint security system.

An Employee Background Check Could have prevented $41,000in theft!

Recently, I conducted an employee theft investigation into a very expensive loss where adequate background checks were not conducted. As I was interviewing the employee it hit me that had this company been conducting criminal background checks none of this would have ever occurred. The employee would have never had the opportunity to steal $41,000 because she would have never been hired. She had been caught twice before!

Background check experts at a reputable background check company know what to look for and how to obtain it. In many cases a background check company can locate records that are not easily obtainable. Many times when we conduct employee background checks, we look “between the lines” of what the candidate told our client. We will find not only criminal records that they lied about or omitted but we will also find serious facts that would curl the hair of any potential employer. Pre-employment screening has revealed that applicants have not just stolen from one but many previous employers. We have also found violent crimes including sexual assault and robbery just to name a few.

As a background check company we have also conducted background checks on people who have outright lied about their education. Pre-employment screening of this type has revealed candidate who not only did not finish a degree but never even attended the school. Besides criminal background checks and education, employers should look at credit histories, driving records, SSN validations and sex offender records just to name a few. Many employers believe that they have staff that can conduct employee background checks and be their own in-house background check experts. That would be like trying to be your own doctor. It takes special skills and abilities to make this process cost effective and complete. Do not risk YOUR business!

What to do when they start stealing the cheap stuff too…

In the bottle security world we find that as we fix one problem another may pop up. We get reports from time to time from clients that they have protected the “good” stuff but now the shoplifters are stealing the less expensive liquor and wine.

This is normal and a part of fixing the overall problem. Think about it, the shoplifter is accustom to stealing from you. They expect it and have come to depend on the free stuff they get from you. Now that you have a bottle security program in place and are beginning to squeeze them out of your life they are not happy about it. Some will simply go to your unprotected competitor. Some will change to stealing product that is not protected or secured with a liquor bottle lock.

This is actually good as it is telling you that your efforts are working. Now let’s fine tune the solution. You have liquor bottle locks on the good stuff like Grey Goose. But there has been an increase in the theft of the less expensive stuff. Maybe the mini bottles are disappearing or the less expensive full size bottles. What do you do?

You have several options. You can do nothing and absorb the losses. But that still means that you will be losing money. What you need though is an option that is cost effective. You could place a liquor bottle lock on $5.99 vodka and that may work especially because the liquor bottle locks are reusable.

But another solution could be to put a Checkpoint label on the bottle and deactivate it at the time of checkout. Checkpoint labels are very inexpensive.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase EASy Bottle liquor bottle locks by Alpha Security and your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system.

Alpha High Theft Solutions1 Alarm, 2 Alarm & 3 Alarm Devices for Clothing Security

We are frequently asked what the difference is between Alpha Security devices that have 1 Alarm, 2 Alarm and 3 Alarm features. In the Clothing Security world we can use those devices in conjunction with a Clothing Alarm and other clothing security tags. These devices are used for merchandise that we have a more serious theft problem with or that shoplifters have targeted that may not be able to utilize traditional security tags on clothes.

Alpha Security 1 Alarm – These types of Clothing Security tags or devices will only trigger the antennas at the doors. A regular hard tag or label will do this. However, Alpha also has Spider Wraps, Cable Loks and other items that will cause an alarm and can sometimes be more conducive to your packaging needs.

Alpha Security 2 Alarm – A 2 alarm device will do what a 1 alarm device does plus it will “self-alarm”. Self-alarm means that if a shoplifter tries to remove the device by either cutting the cables, prying the device off or damaging it, the device itself will go into alarm. These 2 alarm devices have a built in sounder that produces about 90 dB of sound. That will immediately draw attention to the shoplifter. Normal repeated use by customers and store personnel will not cause an alarm. These devices are very robust.

Alpha Security 3 Alarm – These devices do everything that a 1 and 2 alarm device do plus when the shoplifter tries to leave the property the 3 alarm devices built in sounder, again about 90 dB goes off. The shoplifter then has a choice they can run down the street or mall with this sounder going off, attracting attention to themselves or they can drop the merchandise. The sounder will last up to 10 minutes once the shoplifter passes through the antennas.

These Clothing Security tags are as durable as any Checkpoint Tags or Alpha Clothing Security device. They have excellent construction, solid plastic welds and high quality electronic components. Of course the added benefit is that they are reusable over and over saving you money and labor. Alpha High Theft Solutions are not intended to be for all merchandise. It is clearly more cost effective to use Checkpoint Tags for the bulk of your merchandise. But remember your Clothing Alarm is only as good as the security tags on clothes.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase Checkpoint Tags, a Clothing Alarm, Clothing Security or Clothing Security tags to put Security tags on clothes and an Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system.

Shoplifting can entertain and teach!

Over the years I have run into some pretty weird situations with shoplifters. In a company’s effort to prevent shoplifting we must apprehend the thieves that are stealing.

In one situation I stopped and detained a middle aged woman for shoplifting about $300 worth of new tennis shoes that I had witnessed her switch tags on to a lower priced shoe. She had a pretty heavy Eastern European accent. Again while police officers were taking her into custody she stated that I was discriminating against her because she was European. The police officers taking her into custody, whom I knew very well started laughing. She looked at them with shock when they told her. “Lady this store is owned by a French company and he (pointing to me) is married to German citizen (I met my clearly better half when I was in the Army stationed in Germany). They then reminded her that she had the right to remain silent and that they would prefer that she exercise that right.

Another time I apprehended a guy who had stolen a framed picture of Christ. He did not fight me, resist, run or anything else that we are always prepared to deal with. But when the Police arrived at the store and we were switching handcuffs on the shoplifter he turned to me and said, “This is not a very Christian thing you are doing to me”. This guy STEALS a picture of Christ and I am the sinner!

Another all-time favorite is the guy who stole a $1.00 fishing lure from a sporting goods store. That was all he took! I stopped him and took him into custody. When I got him back to the Security Office I emptied his pockets (he was handcuffed) and was bagging it up for the police when I discovered a “wad” of cash well over one hundred dollars. I was shocked (still naïve then) and asked him why he stole a minor $1.00 item when he clearly had the cash to pay for it. He said, “I wanted to see if I could get away with it”. I just shook my head and told him that it was good that he had the cash on him, as he would need it for bail.

I have found over the years that you can prevent shoplifting and be entertained at the same time. My Loss Prevention Seminars and Loss Prevention Workshops explore these types of incidents and many other situations.

Find the equipment to fit your needs

The other day I was walking through a certain retail sporting goods store when I came across a display of football jerseys.  I had to stop and consider the display, not because I liked the team, or the colors, or even the price offered, but because of how ridiculous the jerseys looked while being festooned with four retail anti-theft devices A PIECE.

You did not read that last sentence wrong.  Each piece of clothing had an Alpha 2 Alarm, an Alpha 3 Alarm, an Alpha Shark Tag, and an Alpha Fashion2 attached at various points of the garment.  Just by looking at them I could tell it would be near impossible for any customer to try on any of the jerseys without being bludgeoned into a coma by the amount of devices.

I believe that if you have that many retail anti-theft devices on a piece of clothing you might have a few issues in your company.  First of all, you need to look at moving your store out of that neighborhood if the need to prevent shoplifting is THAT severe.  Secondly, your Loss Prevention or merchandising team has no idea how to properly attach devices to product.  Or, finally, you just have too many excess devices and no reasonable idea what to do with them.

Here’s some advice; research each anti-theft device BEFORE ordering it.  That way you will know what can fit your company needs so your customers can try on the clothing and find out what fits them.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store for Alpha 2Alarm, Alpha 3Alarm, Alpha Fashion2, Alpha Jewel Lok, Alpha Nano Gate,  Alpha Shark Tag, Alpha Spider Wrap and other retail anti-theft devices from Alpha Security to use in conjunction with your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system that can help you prevent shoplifting in your business.

Preventing Return Fraud in 3 Visits or Less

Using retail anti-theft devices can be an effective tool in preventing return fraud in stores with return policies geared toward providing good customer service. Return fraud has been and continues to be a major problem in retail security. ORC (Organized Retail Crime) groups target merchandise that is valuable and easy to steal, which is typically merchandise lacking retail anti-shoplifting devices. The groups take non-tagged merchandise in order to appear legitimate when making a return of the merchandise they had previously stolen.

Return fraud, when conducted in ORC situations, will usually occur in several visits to the store. When dealing with a chain of stores, these visits may occur one after another as they travel a central interstate or highway.

The first visit may only involve a subject staging merchandise in a specific and secluded area of the store. The merchandise will probably be the highest valued, easiest to conceal, non-tagged merchandise that they can find. This subject may stage the merchandise in bags prior to leaving.

The second visit will consist of the concealment and/or theft of the merchandise that was previously staged for them. This visit will probably take no longer than five minutes in the store and is difficult to detect.

The third visit is where the fraudulent return takes place where the subject will return the merchandise that was previously stolen. These visits will often consist of several different subjects, and all three steps may happen simultaneously with several sets of merchandise. The easiest way to combat return fraud is to protect your merchandise with retail anti-theft devices.

Last Year’s Losses…It was an Inside Job!

The people that you work with day in and day out, the people you hired off the street and trained, the people who say good morning to you every day, the people who you may have gotten to know personally… these are the same people who are ripping you off behind your back. Sadly, employee theft is responsible for at least half of your losses in any given year. In my twelve years as a Loss Prevention Manager, I have had detailed conversations with these employees. After conducting an in depth employee theft investigation, we were able to determine the facts. Facts like how many times a week the employee stole, how much in dollars of internal theft we lost due to this one employee, as well as what method they used. During the course of the interview with the associate you will learn other facts, like why they committed the theft and how long they have been stealing from you and your customers.

I have seen cases that totaled more than $100,000 and involved internal theft with multiple employees being involved. Also some of the largest dollar value cases are going to come from your most trusted employees. Managers and security personnel have access to more merchandise than anyone and no one tends to question their integrity.

An employee theft investigation can unveil some shocking finds about any one of your employees. Experts can quickly identify your problem areas and target certain areas to expose employee theft; saving your profit and setting the tone that you will not tolerate theft inside your place of business.

Don’t let your Profits Shrink!

They say that the clothes make the man. I have to wonder what kind of man do stoles clothes make? Sure you might be wearing some mighty fine duds, but how do you walk around all day wearing something that you know is not rightfully yours?

Clothing security works to prevent clothing from being stolen. The use of cheap tags and cheap labels help defer the initial costs associated with procuring retail anti-theft devices.

It has been proven by many retailers that the simple addition of security abels or tags greatly reduces shrink. Shrink is the term commonly associated with loss of merchandise by a retailer. It does not generally include straight cash losses.

When retailers suffer shrink losses, a huge impact is taken on the bottom line profit. Even if there is an allotted budget for shrink, the thousands of dollars lost can destroy even the best sales production.

Having accessibility to cheap tags and cheap labels offsets the loss in shrink thereby allowing you more profit from your clothing sales. You work hard for each of those dollars earned, you should be able to reap the benefits.

Liquor Bottle Security for Washington State

The State of Washington is in the process of privatizing liquor sales. This means that there is a huge opportunity for retailers in the state! It also means that that are shoplifters looking forward to new opportunities. Bottle security is critical from the start. Retailers that take liquor bottle security seriously before they open their doors to liquor sales customers this year will be ahead of the pack.

Liquor bottles locks like the EASy Bottle, EASy Guarde, Crystal Guarde and Steel Grip from Alpha Security will keep your profits in store by denying shoplifters the ability to steal your product. Liquor bottle locks can even deny shoplifters the ability to open and consume or pour off your merchandise into a flask before they leave the store.

Washington State retailers will be facing these same issues just like other states have. The great news is that the liquor bottle lock solution works and works very well. Alpha Security basically invented the liquor bottle lock and produces the highest quality liquor bottle locks made. They are built to stand up to wear and tear in a retail environment. A liquor bottle lock is simple and easy to apply and remove, by store staff.

A liquor bottle security program is easy to set up and maintain. It is clearly cost effective. Consider the loss of one bottle of Grey Goose. Shoplifters do not target less expensive brands they go right for the expensive stuff. Securing these bottles behind a counter has a negative effect on your good customers. They cannot shop and compare as easily. Keeping all product on the sales floor and available it the principal behind a wine and liquor bottle security program.
