Good Customer Service is Responding to EAS!

There aren’t many things that make me more proud than to have one of my employees come to me with their news of making a recovery. I am talking about recovering clothes from a potential shoplifter.

Every once in a while, one of my employees will respond to an EAS alarm and get a huge surprise. For example, just the other day a cashier heard the EAS go off and she went to offer assistance to that customer. Well, the lady that set off the alarm was so shocked not only because she missed the retail anti-theft devices on our merchandise, but because someone had come to assist her. Unfortunately, a lot of stores let their cashiers get used to ignoring the EAS system so when a shoplifter is actually stopped because of one it can be a bit of a surprise to them.

She saw the cashier getting closer, and quickly pulled several clothing items out of her purse, threw them at the cashier and ran out the door. The cashier was in total awe and it took her a moment to realize that the clothes had all of our tags still on them. She had no intention of stopping a shoplifter; she was just trying to give good customer service. It was that service that prevented a loss for our store.

Creating a Successful Anti-Shoplifting Program

The loss that a retail store can incur from shoplifting can be detrimental to even the largest of retail chains. That is why a successful retail anti-shoplifting program is essential to a thriving store. Through the proper use of retail Anti-Shoplifting tools, such as a Checkpoint Security System and checkpoint tags, a retail store can dramatically reduce their loss.

In 2009, a company that I worked for suffered a loss of approximately $3,000 in just video game loss in one location. In that same year I was able to detain my highest net detention from a video game theft. A couple came into our store and multiple other stores throughout the day and had removed video games from their retail anti-shoplifting devices. I was luckily able to catch them during the process of concealing video games they had removed from the shelf while on their last stop for the day. In the end, the couple had almost successfully stolen over $2,000 in video games from multiple stores in a single day. The following year, although we already had checkpoint security systems in place, the company I worked for began using retail theft prevention shelf locks for added security on all our video games. On top of the shelf locks, all video games were alpha cased with checkpoint tags inside. By the end of the year my total amount of video game detentions had decreased dramatically and our total loss for that department was equal to hundreds, not thousands of dollars. In one year we were able to decrease our loss radically by simply diversifying the retail anti-shoplifting devices that were previously in use.

This is just one example of many checkpoint security system devices that I have seen reduce loss for stores that I have worked for. However, truly successful retail theft prevention programs make use of a combination of checkpoint systems in order to increase their anti-shoplifting efforts.

Customer service should be part of your hiring process through Background Checks

Customer service has become the most important factor in the business decisions that we make today. From our policies and procedures to how we staff our buildings, the customer comes first. In a tough economy, this becomes even more important.

When a customer walks into the building they expect that we have hired the right people and completed thorough pre-employment screening of our employees. They expect that they are coming to a place where they can trust our employees and believe what we tell them because we are a business of integrity. If we do not complete criminal background checks of all our employees, we are opening up the door for this image to be tarnished. Most of all we want our customers to feel safe. Hiring a background check company gives us the confidence to know that our employees have never been convicted of a violent crime.

Background checks ensure we have the right people in place to serve our customers. Employee background checks make me comfortable that my employees are going to be honest with the customer and do their best to get the customer what they need. When I hire background check experts to conduct pre-employment screening it reassures me that I have made the right hiring decision, and that my employees are going to act with integrity.

For the security of my business and the safety of my customers and employees, I owe it to them and myself to conduct employee background checks on all of my new hires.

Keep a close Guarde on your Bottles!

Shoplifters can add shrink (or inventory losses) to your liquor and wine bottles in two general ways. The first way is to consume the alcohol right inside your store. The other is to physically remove the bottle from your establishment without paying –stealing it.

Bottle security is more than just hiding your bottles away behind lock and key. Liquor bottle security is about putting up your guard to theft in its various forms. Alpha Security makes a wide range of liquor bottle lock solutions in their EASy Bottle line of products.

One such product is Alpha Security’s EASy Guarde liquor bottle Lock. This lock has the best of both worlds in it. As a cap placed over the mouth of the bottle, it provides security to the contents. No one can open the bottle to consume the alcohol in the store.

The EASy Guarde is imbedded with an alarm if a shoplifter attempts to steal the bottle. This type of liquor bottle security is a similar form of technology that most retailers use to protect their inventory from shoplifters.

The S3 Detacher is easy for any of your employees to use. It is also easy to maintain control of the keys if you want restricted access by members of your staff.

Put your bottles on guard with the EASy Guarde bottle locks. Your profits will thank you in the end.

The good thing about missed tags…

It’s not an ideal situation, but you’ve got to be kidding yourself if you don’t admit that the occasional security tag on clothes is missed. While we try hard to ensure total accuracy, it can be difficult to be 100% all the time. Fear not, there is a bright side to this situation. Recently while watching cameras in my store I observed a subject with a large bag browsing the denim. What tipped me off that this subject was suspicious was that the subject wasn’t just browsing for the right size or color; they were looking for the pairs that didn’t have checkpoint tags attached. After further observation I observed the subject concealing the merchandise and I was able to apprehend and recover it.

Checkpoint tags are not easy to defeat by the average shoplifter. However everybody knows that as our technology in clothing security advances, so does the professional shoplifter. Yet again, there is a bright side! A few weeks ago two individuals came into my store with bags from another retailer. The subjects began grabbing a large amount of merchandise very quickly and we barely had a chance to clear the fitting rooms before they got in. There was no time to get a detailed list of what they grabbed and they paid no attention to whether of not the merchandise had clothing security tags on it. They must have known a way to remove the tags so that they didn’t set off the clothing alarm at the exit. All we knew was that they went in with about 30 items. When they came out it was tough to know for certain, but their bags seemed a bit larger. We rushed to the fitting room to find it a mess with about half the stuff they went in with. The biggest sign we had to know that they had stolen was the pile of about 10 clothing security tags hidden under some of the merchandise. After apprehending the subjects we were able to recover our merchandise and identify professional shoplifters that had been terrorizing the area for some time.

The ideal situation is for clothing security to protect our merchandise from theft every time. But the bottom line is that everything can be defeated, and the key is to use the flaws of security tags on clothes to your benefit.

A Successful Seminar

I just taught a loss prevention seminar for a new client. We focused on shoplifting in their grocery store. We split the 40 employees into two loss prevention seminars so the sales floor was still covered. I have to say, the two groups I taught were so enthusiastic that it motivated me even more. My style is high-energy, out in the group and interactive with everyone. I hate a training seminar where a speaker stands in one spot and drones on.

Well last week the General Manager called to tell me that the training was paying off. We were discussing the follow up she wanted to set up when she said “I got to go, call you right back” and hung up rather abruptly.

Well, come to find out, her staff had identified another shoplifter from the techniques I shared with them while we were talking. She approached the subject the way I trained her to and he indeed was a shoplifter. They got the merchandise back. The police responded and the shoplifter was taken as their “guest” for an all-expenses paid trip to the County jail.

I like to teach in a loss prevention workshop environment. This allows better interaction with everyone. It is easier to draw out the employees that are generally quieter and get them involved.

I also spent some time with management in a workshop environment training them on employee theft detection and prevention. I hope when I call the GM to follow up again the same thing does not happen during that call because of an employee theft problem. But you never know!

Nano Gates are no good without the right tags!

The other day I was in a store in a different part of the district that had not reported any tagging audits in over four months.  It just so happened that at that same point in history that store’s Loss Prevention department had been dissolved due to budget cuts, leaving all Loss Prevention duties in the hands of the store manager and his assistant managers.  Unfortunately they weren’t all that knowledgeable, or properly trained when it came to enforcing and adhering to LP practices.

I was there with a team of other LP associates to perform a sweep of the property and find everything that was being done incorrectly so that it could be corrected and to simultaneously instruct store management as to how to perform their required duties.  While there were a few major issues, such as no employee bag checks or failure to review CCTV footage, the biggest issue was found in the realm of what I was assigned to look for.

There wasn’t a single retail anti-theft device in place, anywhere.  Not a one 2 Alarm or 3 Alarm tag was being used.  Not even a Spider Wrap haphazardly attached to a bulk item.

 We were stunned.

This was a store that had a fully functional Nano Gate system at all of the entrances, but that was of course useless without any retail anti-theft devices to set it off.  When asked how they expected the Nano Gates to function, the store manager thought that all products arrived in store with security devices hidden inside them.

Affordable Retail Security is out there!

The fact is retail security is now more cost effective than ever.  Think about this:  When do you every buy name brand chargers or accessories for your phone or other electronic devices anymore?  The answer for most is never.  You can go online and find hundreds of options that work just as well for much less than the OEM prices.  The same principle applies to retail security items like retail anti-theft devices.

Can you spend a lot of money on name brand EAS labels and tags?  Of course you can.  Is it always necessary?  Not really.  There are options now for cheap labels and cheap tags that still get the job done.  As long as a product is quality and works then the name really doesn’t matter.  I guarantee shoplifters don’t stop to check the brand name on an anti-shoplifting tag.  All they care about is discovering if an item is protected or not.  If it has retail anti-theft devices (even cheap labels and cheap tags) then they are much more likely to leave the product alone and steal elsewhere. Don’t get caught unprotected because you can’t afford the name-brand retail security items.  Find a less expensive alternative and take the first step in fighting back against retail crime.

Green Clothing Security

Many companies are making the transition into a more environmentally conscious or “Green” mode. Whether it is all natural or organic foods, sustainable building designs or just reduction of waste, the green movement is sweeping the nation. More designers are using green materials in their clothes, so the next logical step is to use green retail anti-theft devices for your retail clothing security.

Environmentally safe and inexpensive cheap tags are the ideal solution. EAS systems employ the use of hard tags to deter shoplifters. These two part plastic devices clamp a pin through the material creating an impenetrable bond. The EAS tags are virtually unbeatable without the proper detachers.

They are a green solution as the tags can be reused over and over again. If one half is lost, another piece can easily be used as all EAS tag halves work with each other. There is no need to create extra waste by disposing of these hard tags. The reusable nature of the tags also helps to keep the costs down by eliminating the need for continual reorders.

Surprise! You’re Busted!

I have heard a lot of stories involving employee theft.  Some of them are immensely far-fetched while others are so crazy they have to be true.  This story is one of the latter.

A colleague of mine was having an issue with video games going missing in his store.  He had a camera in the area where they were kept but it was a still and had no way of being repositioned to a better locale so he tried everything from maintaining a physical LP presence there to rigging up dummy cameras to possibly scare off this mysterious thief.  His big break in the case came one night while doing a check of the stock rooms.  He found plastic wrappers and security cases for some video games stashed beneath a shelf in a stock room used for house wares.  With the new knowledge that it was a case of employee theft he now had to think of who it was and how he could catch the in the act.

Unfortunately the stock room provided no place to put a covert camera, nor did he have any solid leads as to who the culprit was.  Eventually he came up with an idea to apprehend the suspect that was so insane that he didn’t tell anyone else what method he was using.

Using a large cardboard box, one normally containing a do-it-yourself cabinet, he cut out a few discreet holes so he could sit in it and see outside it into the room around him.  He sat in the box for six shifts straight until his employee theft case came to a close when the suspect, a guy on his receiving team, showed up in the stock room, games in hand, and started opening them.  My colleague was so excited he leapt out of the box scaring the thief half to death in the process.

It may not have been the most practical employee theft investigation, but it worked.
