Caveat Dominus: Employer Beware

When it comes to examining an applicant’s history, the mantra “the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior” has been the guiding principle behind this practice.  For employers to know what performance to expect from a prospective member of their staff, they will want to have a pre-employment screening process in place that will give them this insight. The potential repercussions caused by a bad hire are enough to make any business reluctant to take a chance on a new employee without a rigorous background check. Employee background checks are important and here is why: According to the 2010 National Retail Security Survey, internal theft cost retailers $15.9 billion and accounted for 45% of shrink. In addition, during a new associate’s first ninety days, companies can potentially invest anywhere between $5,000 to $75,000 in their training and development; this is motivation enough to make an employer not want to have to repeat this process too many times.

The potential hire selection process not only has shrink implications to consider, but staff members can also be potential liabilities for their employers. This is a prime example of why pre-employment screening is so important.  Legal actions involving negligent hiring practices and employers being held accountable for a staff member’s actions can be avoided if due diligence in hiring practices can be demonstrated. Also, in a society as litigious as ours, prospective hires that could jeopardize a business’ compliance with federal and state safety guidelines should be avoided. Lastly, employee background checks can assist in avoiding a bad hire’s potential damage to a company’s reputation, which can’t be measured in monetary losses.

The need for employers to perform background checks for prospective staff members is palpable and choosing the right background check company is a crucial part of the hiring process. When considering the right business to handle this, accuracy of information and timeliness are important factors. Choosing the wrong background check company for examining applicant backgrounds can nullify the steps an employer takes to avoid the potential hazards the appointment process can pose.

Liquor Bottle Security doesn’t have to be seasonal.

Every thing has its moment, its place in time, if you will. Liquors and their mixed drink counterparts are no different. They each hold their specific time in the spotlight. Sometimes that drink might be a seasonal drink – margaritas and pina coladas in the summer, hot toddies in the winter. Sometimes it could be a drink sensation that catches on over a matter of months or even years.

Bottle security, in order to be effective, needs to be able to have the same type of seasonality to it. Liquor bottle security needs to be transitional.

That is one of the nice things about Alpha Security’s liquor bottle locks. Once you make the initial investment in liquor bottle locks for your bottle security, there is no set application.

If you have an increase in sales and theft of tequila in the month of May, then you can focus your liquor bottle security on tequila. Need to make a switch to rum or wines in the winter, easy. All you have to do is move the liquor bottle locks to the area you want to focus on.

No more trying to franticly devise new and innovative controls to stop the theft in your stores. Just simply remove and reuse the locks wherever you need, whenever you need.

What’s your resolution?

I love hearing about people’s New Years resolutions. Some of them are so far fetched you know they won’t make it through the first week. Some of them are pretty typical, you know the ones, eat right, drink less, workout more. That’s the one that perks my ears when I hear employees talking about it,” workout more”.

Now I think it’s amazing to want to take charge of your life and your health. I also know that about this time of year, we get in fresh new shipments of athletic attire and inevitably we have at least one employee stealing their way into their New Year’s Resolution.

It’s because of this trend that I emphatically start putting security tags on clothes starting with the athletic wear. I know that clothing security tags are strong visual deterrent to the theft of that particular item. I like that the clothing security tags do most of the work for us. The majority of the employees stay honest because they don’t want to contend with beating a clothing alarm.

Clothing security doesn’t just stop there for us. We also talk about the high shrink departments every chance we get. Just as shoplifters avoid being noticed, employees are less likely to steal if they know the area is under constant surveillance.

After the initial resolution has either wilted or become a habit, I can put to rest my worries of protecting our athletic wear. I know its now time to move on to protecting the next target.

You’re never too experienced for new training!

When I first started out in loss prevention well over thirty years ago, there were very different concerns. I remember my first review of standards involved my closure and reduction of check fraud. Check fraud! Who even writes checks anymore, much less steals them? Criminals have moved on to far more sophisticated forms of theft and fraud than stealing or forging checks.

My point is that things change. Technology has changed, the methods of shoplifting and not to mention employee theft, have changed. If I was still working under the “rules” of a decade ago, I would not be successful in reducing my shrink, and I would probably have gotten myself and my employers into some pretty bad litigation.

It is important for my success to continue to educate myself on these changes. That is the only way I can make sure that when I do my loss prevention training, I know I am ahead of the game.

Most professional industries have some sort of continuing education or certification to stay employed in their respective fields. Why would loss prevention be any different?

With the wealth of knowledge and information available through loss prevention seminars and loss prevention workshops, it is a no brainer. Sign up for a class, grab a buddy or two and learn what else is out there.

What’s the point is using Anti-Theft Devices if you don’t use them correctly?

The other day I was out shopping with my wife at one of her favorite retail clothing stores.  It is one of those places that offers bargains and sale prices on big name items in the fashion community and has on hand everything from shoes, perfumes, clothes, handbags, and even cookware.  As I was staring off into oblivion (as I am unable to maintain interest in a store that offers nothing to those of us with a Y chromosome) I noticed something that actually roused me from my self-induced stupor.

It was as we were walking through the part of the store where they kept the handbags.  The bags are on racks and hang by their straps to save space and provide ease of access and, upon inspection I noticed the majority of them had Alpha 2 Alarm tags affixed to them.  In and of itself, the application of Alpha 2 Alarm tags, or ANY retail anti-theft device on designer handbags was nothing special.  Rather, it was HOW the Alpha 2 Alarm tags had been affixed that caught my eye.

On almost every bag I came across, the Alpha 2 Alarm tags had been placed on the most ineffectual part of the bag possible.  Rather than thread a heavy ring or loop of any of the bags, the tags had been secured AROUND the straps themselves.  This meant that anyone wishing to remove them would only need to unlatch one side of the adjustable strap and simply slide the tag right off the purse.

I doubt it had been intentional but it was so blatant I had to tell the store management about the oversight.  There’s no point having retail anti -theft devices if they aren’t going to be used effectively.

Anti-Theft Devices aren’t just for Merchandise!

One of the things that happens to plague most retail companies is employees “accidentally” going home with a piece of equipment in their pockets.  The items range in size and scope from pens and memo pads to pricing guns, mag-keys, and walkie-talkies.

The truth is that a lot of the time, it is simply a matter of an employee forgetting to turn in their gear at the end of their shift but what it does is creates issues when too much equipment has walked out the door leaving only a handful or no usable equipment left in the store to conduct necessary business.

By managing a log of who is assigned certain pieces of equipment a store can certainly lessen the impact of these disappearing items.  But to be certain the more important pieces don’t go for a stroll you should look into attaching a retail anti-theft device that will sound the alarm when something crosses the threshold that shouldn’t.  A set of Cheap Labels can cover most walkie-talkie units without lessening their effectiveness.  Same goes for mag-keys (as long as they are applied to the correct side).  As for price guns a Cheap Tag attached via a loop or around a part of the handle works just fine. I have even seen labels and tags attached to pens at the cash wrap so that customers don’t accidentally walk out with them.

Though things like pens and walkie talkies won’t do much for an actual thief outside of the business, making sure to use a cheap label on your removal keys is a great way to guarantee that your employees aren’t using your detachers and keys to remove items form other retailers…

Always keep an eye out for the Silver Lining…

For every bad or unfortunate situation, they say there is a silver lining. It’s just a matter of having to look hard enough. In clothing security, it is almost a literal truth. The silver lining we look for is an aluminum foil lining in shoplifter’s clothes or bags.

The purpose of using a foil lining is to try and prevent the anti theft devices on clothes from activating as a shoplifter passes through the EAS towers positioned at the exit doors. The shoplifter can sometimes slip out without the audible alarm drawing attention to them, if the EAS alarms do not register the anti-theft devices through the lining.

Most states have some sort of laws against the use of shoplifting tools like bolster bags and foil linings. The problem is that in order to enforce this type of law, the perpetrators need to be caught. That generally happens only after they have been apprehended for shoplifting. It will trump up their offenses upon arrest, but understand that it is not a proactive piece of legislation. Therefore, the best way to avoid falling victim to these types of devices is to keep a vigilant watch on your shoppers particularly during the busy holiday seasons when they are carrying more than one shopping bag.

Employee Theft can be committed by Anyone!

Employee theft is the most pervasive threat faced by any company.  As a company you rely on your employees to generate the goods and services needed to make a profit and pay their salaries.  However, as we in the Loss Prevention profession are aware, we cannot implicitly trust every single employee completely.  In a perfect world we wouldn’t need to concern ourselves with employee theft or needing to conduct employee theft investigations but this is far from a perfect world.

Everyone in the employ of your company, from the cleaning crew that shows up early in the morning every other day to the kindly retiree grandmother who works part time or the twenty year veteran manager is capable of, and has likely committed an internal theft at one point or another.  Employee theft is so common that there are entire branches of Loss Prevention dedicated to conducting employee theft investigations and terminating or prosecuting the culprits.  It is so common that there are dozens of tracking metrics used by every company with a product to sell or money to move to find who is stealing what or embezzling funds from where.

How do we stamp out this incredibly massive threat to our means of making a profit?  We don’t.  There is no way to completely eliminate internal theft.  Just like shoplifters who make their living by stealing from our respective companies if an employee WANTS to purloin something from your company they will find a way to do it.  They may even get away with it the first few times.  The only way to stop them is to conduct thorough employee theft investigations, to be vigilant, and to make an example of those you catch so that others who may consider taking something that isn’t theirs will think twice before trying.

Bottle Security is nearly impossible to defeat…

I love stores that have bottle security in place. All of those liquor bottle locks are like soldiers in a neat little row, little plastic caps glistening in the compact fluorescent lighting. They seem to call out to the shoplifters saying, “Go ahead, I dare you to take me”.

It’s like having a little warning label on each individual bottle. You would have to be seriously desperate to even want to try and attempt to steal a bottle with a liquor bottle lock on it, particularly if that bottle lock is made by Alpha Security.

Not only do the bottle caps prevent anyone from consuming the alcohol inside the bottle, but they also work in conjunction with an EAS system to create an audible alarm if the bottle is stolen.

No bottle lock is easy to remove without the proper detachers. Even on the off chance that someone could successfully get a bottle of alcohol out the door, they still couldn’t do anything with it.

I read a Q&A one time about a customer got home and the store failed to remove the cap. There were several posts about what to do. They all added up to about the same thing. Either you break the bottle, or you take the bottle back to the store (with your receipt) to have the liquor bottle lock removed.

Cheap Tags to replace your Broken ones!

Over the past few weeks I have been noticing more and more instances where there are piles of retail anti-theft devices stashed in some dark corner of the store, broken and mangled beyond usability.  It is the calling card of semi-pro and professional shoplifters going about their business of circumventing our retail anti-shoplifting measures.  On top of the cost of the items they stole there is the added cost of replacing all the destroyed tags.  The loss of ten or twenty every week may not seem like much but it adds up fast.  Before you realize it you have no retail anti-theft devices left to adhere to new stock and the price to order new shipments might be outside the constraints of your budget.

Beyond trying to do the impossible (which is to completely shutdown ALL retail theft) the only thing you can hope to do is mitigate your losses through renewed focus on your problem areas and looking for less expensive but still compatible replacement devices to supplement your retail anti-shoplifting needs.  I myself have had to replace almost every retail anti-theft device in one of my stores for the dual fact that so many had been defeated and they were so ridiculously outdated.
