Where Do We Go From Here

When you spend a career in retail investigations, it is easy to sometimes forget how little you knew at the beginning. I remember several instances of employee theft where not only was I sure that someone was stealing, but that they should be sent straight to jail for their crimes.

It was only because I had the luxury of some really good mentors that helped me through the process, that I didn’t make some egregious errors.

I know now that some of my decisions, while they may have been with good intentions, would have put my employers at risk. It took someone with years of experience and knowledge to show me the right way to conduct an investigation. I was also shown the ethical and legal way to deal with those outcomes.

I feel for those who don’t have a mentor to help them through the processes. I guess that is why it is important to take part in loss prevention seminars that deal with employee theft.

Are shoplifters laughing at your LP policies?

There doesn’t need to be a battle between Customer Service and Loss Prevention.

Throughout my time working in Loss Prevention, I have observed a constant struggle between stopping theft and giving customers the best shopping experience. Securing Handbags is easy with Clothing Security!

I worked a case regarding a theft ring that was into designer handbags. I partnered up with one of the other retailers in the mall where we were anchor stores. They had suffered big losses in this department, and were sure that we would be next on the list.

Immediately we got to work on our clothing security. The checkpoint tags were already in the store for a different product group so the most obvious solution was to push clothing security into the handbag department.

In addition to the checkpoint tags, we talked to our handbag department, telling them to be extra vigilant. If they saw even the slightest thing that made them suspicious, they were to call us. We made extra visits to the department during our store walk-thrus and made sure our CCTV covered the area completely. We were sure we were set.

Sure enough, a week later, the ring came into our store. It was right at closing time when the associates were finishing up for the day. There were five of them. They came in, each grabbed as many bags as they could and ran out the door. I heard the clothing alarm, raced to the door, and saw as the last one exited. They had a car waiting for them.

Not wanting to face a five to one showdown, I contacted the local PD and gave them the license plate number from their vehicle. I knew exactly what had been taken and had the video to back it up. Because of the checkpoint tags setting the clothing alarm off, we had an immediate reaction to the theft.

The PD was able to recover all but two of the bags because of this timely information.

Can you tel the difference between a friend and an employee?

As a loss prevention manager, I never got to close to my store employees. There was always a professional separation. I never went out for drinks after work, or celebrated an employee’s birthday or holiday party. It was this separation that made me good at my job, especially when it came to employee theft investigations.

It is never easy to have to terminate an employee. It is even harder to have to terminate an employee and send them off to jail, this is particularly true when you consider the employee a friend. You know their lives, and future job prospects; will never be the same again.

Going over the top with Retail Anti-Theft Devices

The other day I was walking through a retail sporting goods store when I came across a display of football jerseys.  I had to stop and consider the display, not because I liked the team, or the colors, or even the price offered, but because of how ridiculous the jerseys looked while being festooned with four retail anti-theft devices EACH!  

Each piece of clothing had an Alpha 3 Alarm, an Alpha 2 Alarm, an Alpha Fashion2 hard tag, and an Alpha Shark Tag attached at various points of the garment.  Just by looking at them I could tell it would be nearly impossible for any customer to try on any of the jerseys without being bludgeoned into a coma by the amount of devices.

 I believe that if you have that many retail anti-theft devices on a piece of clothing you might have a few issues in your company.  First of all, you need to look at moving your store out of that neighborhood if the need to prevent shoplifting is THAT severe.  Secondly, your Loss Prevention or merchandising team has no idea how to properly attach devices to product.  Or, finally, you just have too many excess devices and no reasonable idea what to do with them.

 Here’s some advice; research each anti-theft device BEFORE ordering it.  That way you will know what can fit your company needs so your customers can try on the clothing and find out what fits them.
