Remember Apollo 13

I heard at length the promotion of the “company culture” while working in soft lines retail. These words, overused at every meeting and conference call, quickly evolved into empty clichés. However, the fact remains that creating and sustaining a positive culture within a company or store produces good results and is well worth the effort to attain success in the ongoing endeavor.

Clothing security culture can be extremely volatile. Stores often either “nail it” or completely disregard clothing security; which means that anti-theft devices often are either not used to their fullest potential, or they sit forgotten in an empty corner of a stockroom. Neither clothes nor shipments should be sitting unaccounted for in a stockroom. Should we not have the same expectations of our EAS systems and devices?

Owners and managers lead their teams with the expectation of commitment to success when corporate policy creates a top down culture. In a winning culture, the entire staff from the top down reacts to operational breakdowns and works together to fix their shortcomings. Remember Apollo 13?

Where Do We Go From Here

When you spend a career in retail investigations, it is easy to sometimes forget how little you knew at the beginning. I remember several instances of employee theft where not only was I sure that someone was stealing, but that they should be sent straight to jail for their crimes.

It was only because I had the luxury of some really good mentors that helped me through the process, that I didn’t make some egregious errors.

I know now that some of my decisions, while they may have been with good intentions, would have put my employers at risk. It took someone with years of experience and knowledge to show me the right way to conduct an investigation. I was also shown the ethical and legal way to deal with those outcomes.

I feel for those who don’t have a mentor to help them through the processes. I guess that is why it is important to take part in loss prevention seminars that deal with employee theft.

By getting some much needed loss prevention training, you and your company can limit your risks associated with conducting a thorough employee theft investigation. It can also help you understand the risks, and benefits associated with terminating and prosecuting that employee upon conclusion of the investigation.

Clever Uses for Checkpoint Labels

Checkpoint labels are a common sight in retail theft prevention, those little white strips usually glued to the back of a fragrance or a plastic packaging for headphones, or even found tucked inside a DVD case. They are among the most versatile retail anti-shoplifting tools available to those who wish to stop shoplifting within their store.  The problem is that they are so common a sight that anyone who has ever walked into any retail establishment knows of their existence and those who are looking to steal from you know how to identify and sometimes defeat them.  The challenge is to find clever ways to hide the Checkpoint Labels so that it seems as though they are not present at all.

It is a theme present in one of the more fundamental concepts of retail theft prevention; creating the illusion that there is little or no security on hand to stop a theft from taking place.  Making use of the small size of the Checkpoint Labels, you can hide them almost anywhere; the pockets of a pair of jeans, the seam of a jacket, the brim of a hat, the possibilities are only limited by your vision.  By hiding these diminutive anti-shoplifting devices well enough you can create the illusion for shoplifters that they don’t need to use any tools or measures to defeat your labels which will prove otherwise when they pass through the gate of your Checkpoint security system.

Oh So Simple

Technology amazes me. Looking at the world and seeing the possibilities, information and access available literally, at our fingertips, is quite a phenomenon. But does basic human nature change at the same pace as technology? Maybe! I am afraid that the need to prevent shoplifting still remains.

Yet there are still innovations that have nothing to do with a computer chip, “the cloud” or an app that can completely change your life. They are simple by design, and at the forefront of leading technology. Some of these innovations are changes to retail anti theft devices.

Alpha Security, who is a trusted industry name in retail anti theft devices, is at the forefront of innovation and change. This is because Alpha Security products are reliable, and also because they simply work. Take a look at the Alpha Jewel Lok. It is a simple lock designed to disallow product access. You cannot take a piece of jewelry off of a card with an Alpha Jewel Lok in place. This leaves a shoplifter or dishonest employee with only the option to steal the jewelry with the Alpha Jewel Lok still attached and set the alarm off.

The last thing a shoplifter wants is to be noticed, so setting off an alarm is usually not an option. They will end up leaving the jewelry behind.

Are shoplifters laughing at your LP policies?

Do you ever feel like there are so many shoplifters in your store that is appears that catching them should be like shooting fish in a barrel? My job as a retail theft prevention manager was spent catching shoplifters which is one way to prevent losses. But it made me wonder why these shoplifters were hanging around our store.
I decided to conduct various post shoplifting interviews and a common thread appeared. The shoplifters all assumed it was easy to pocket the store

There doesn’t need to be a battle between Customer Service and Loss Prevention.

Throughout my time working in Loss Prevention, I have observed a constant struggle between stopping theft and giving customers the best shopping experience. As a person representing the anti-shoplifting side of retail, if it were up to me, everything in a store would be nailed down, in a case, or behind bars. This is why I don’t own a store and haven’t crossed over to a Customer Service department. Shoppers don’t want to be treated like criminals and they want to have an open merchandise experience where they can try on shoes, pick up purses, and test cosmetics. So how can retailers obtain a healthy balance between these two conflicting missions?

Enter Checkpoint Security Systems, a leader in retail anti-shoplifting solutions. All of the companies that I have worked for except one have used Checkpoint security tags to combat theft of live merchandise. While interviewing shoplifters at the retailer that didn’t utilize solutions from Checkpoint systems, all of them admitted that they chose our store over other retailers because we didn’t have any merchandise protection they would have to worry about defeating. While many professional shoplifters have tools to remove security tags, they still seek out stores that will make their job easier because their tools often don’t work on Checkpoint Security Tags.

Checkpoint security tags also allow stores to offer their customers a live merchandise experience without the suspicion and worry that I constantly live with. With both hard and soft tags offered, shoppers can freely test and try on merchandise without bulky sensors getting in the way or tangled cables preventing them from removing the item from a rack. Retailers and shoppers each have more positive interactions with each other, and guests leave the store happier. The battle between Loss Prevention and customer service is over, with both sides coming out a winner.

Re-Checking those Background Checks…

If you complete pre-employment screening for your new hires, chances are you still have some sort of signed agreement from them allowing you to conduct background checks whenever you would like. Often times we conduct criminal background checks on our employees during the pre-employment screening process and then never take a second look at our employees. But what about those employees that are conducting criminal activity once they have already been hired? Going to background check experts to conduct periodic criminal background checks can be a great tool to help you ensure that your employees are up to the caliber that you desire.

Employee background checks can be a great tool to use during an investigation into internal theft activity. If you are experiencing loss and you are not able to identify any potential candidates, employee background checks can help you narrow the scope of your search.

Feeling like you are losing money or product and just can’t figure out where it’s going? Look to the background check experts to help you identify those who may be stealing from you in your business.

Securing Handbags is easy with Clothing Security!

I worked a case regarding a theft ring that was into designer handbags. I partnered up with one of the other retailers in the mall where we were anchor stores. They had suffered big losses in this department, and were sure that we would be next on the list.

Immediately we got to work on our clothing security. The checkpoint tags were already in the store for a different product group so the most obvious solution was to push clothing security into the handbag department.

In addition to the checkpoint tags, we talked to our handbag department, telling them to be extra vigilant. If they saw even the slightest thing that made them suspicious, they were to call us. We made extra visits to the department during our store walk-thrus and made sure our CCTV covered the area completely. We were sure we were set.

Sure enough, a week later, the ring came into our store. It was right at closing time when the associates were finishing up for the day. There were five of them. They came in, each grabbed as many bags as they could and ran out the door. I heard the clothing alarm, raced to the door, and saw as the last one exited. They had a car waiting for them.

Not wanting to face a five to one showdown, I contacted the local PD and gave them the license plate number from their vehicle. I knew exactly what had been taken and had the video to back it up. Because of the checkpoint tags setting the clothing alarm off, we had an immediate reaction to the theft.

The PD was able to recover all but two of the bags because of this timely information.

Can you tel the difference between a friend and an employee?

As a loss prevention manager, I never got to close to my store employees. There was always a professional separation. I never went out for drinks after work, or celebrated an employee’s birthday or holiday party. It was this separation that made me good at my job, especially when it came to employee theft investigations.

It is never easy to have to terminate an employee. It is even harder to have to terminate an employee and send them off to jail, this is particularly true when you consider the employee a friend. You know their lives, and future job prospects; will never be the same again.

As a small business owner, you might not be able to have this same luxury of objectivity. That is why taking in a loss prevention workshop on employee theft will help you overcome these emotional ties.

Loss prevention seminars are designed to help you not only gain objectivity, but also useful information on how to identify employee theft, and then how to legally deal with it.

Going over the top with Retail Anti-Theft Devices

The other day I was walking through a retail sporting goods store when I came across a display of football jerseys.  I had to stop and consider the display, not because I liked the team, or the colors, or even the price offered, but because of how ridiculous the jerseys looked while being festooned with four retail anti-theft devices EACH!

Each piece of clothing had an Alpha 3 Alarm, an Alpha 2 Alarm, an Alpha Fashion2 hard tag, and an Alpha Shark Tag attached at various points of the garment.  Just by looking at them I could tell it would be nearly impossible for any customer to try on any of the jerseys without being bludgeoned into a coma by the amount of devices.

I believe that if you have that many retail anti-theft devices on a piece of clothing you might have a few issues in your company.  First of all, you need to look at moving your store out of that neighborhood if the need to prevent shoplifting is THAT severe.  Secondly, your Loss Prevention or merchandising team has no idea how to properly attach devices to product.  Or, finally, you just have too many excess devices and no reasonable idea what to do with them.

Here’s some advice; research each anti-theft device BEFORE ordering it.  That way you will know what can fit your company needs so your customers can try on the clothing and find out what fits them.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store for Alpha 2Alarm, Alpha 3Alarm, Alpha Fashion2, Alpha Jewel Lok, Alpha Jewel Lock, Alpha Nano Gate,  Alpha Shark Tag, Alpha Spider Wrap and other retail anti-theft devices from Alpha Security to use in conjunction with your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system that can help you prevent shoplifting in your business.
