Just a sip – Liquor Bottle Security

There are reported incidents of people trying to open bottles and pour the contents into other containers. Liquor bottle security is more than someone coming in and trying to shoplift a bottle. Some people actually try to consume the alcohol on the premises. These losses make up a very difficult problem that retailers face.

The inherent problem is that once a bottle is opened, there is very little that a shop owner can do to recover the losses. Not only is it hard to convince a customer to buy an open bottle, it is even harder to convince, say the health department, that it is sanitary.

Health departments tend to look down on unsanitary food and beverage sales.

So what is the business owner to do? You can’t always keep an eye on everyone that comes into the store. If someone hides in a back corner and opens a bottle, sometimes it is hard to notice. Opening a bottle is relatively quiet. It’s not like tearing open a package in a clothing store.

This is an example where liquor bottle security is useful for more than just deterring shoplifters. Bottle locks prevent these losses from occurring.

The Alpha Security EASy Bottle is designed for more than just being an alarm. The bottle locks provide product denial, which is to say no one can just come in to take a sip and leave.

Don’t Go Alone – Doing your own Loss Prevention Seminars

As a rookie LP agent, I had several manuals and study guides to memorize regarding shoplifting. It was several months worth of loss prevention training through self conducted Loss Prevention Seminars that had to be completed before I was released to detain a shoplifter.

Since I had no previous military or law enforcement training or experience, this was a whole new world for me. When I had completed my loss prevention training, I thought I was ready for any shoplifting scenario that would come my way or even dealing with employee theft.

The only thing left was to start detaining shoplifters with an experienced LP agent, and then I could go out on my own. I was itching to not only prove that I had learned everything I needed to from the manuals, but also prove I was just as good as the seasoned agent was.

It didn’t take me long to figure out how lucky I was to have someone else with me on that first shoplifting apprehension. I wasn’t prepared for what my loss prevention training manuals didn’t tell me. They didn’t tell me how nervous I would be. How my adrenaline kicked in wondering if there would be a fight, or if the shoplifter might pull a weapon on me. I wished I could have attended a loss prevention workshop and asked questions.

The manuals also didn’t train me on the emotional reaction I would have, because this shoplifter that I was so worried about, was a woman putting merchandise under her six-month-old baby because she couldn’t afford the clothes. Sad.

Having a trained and seasoned agent standing with me for back up helped me to remain calm and consistent with our store policies and procedures.

Asset Protection – Checkpoint security system

Several months ago I began working for a department store that was unlike any retail store in which I had previously worked. My previous employers all used some form of Checkpoint security system.

I was amazed when I realized that this store didn’t utilize any asset protection technology whatsoever – nothing, not Checkpoint security tags, not Checkpoint systems, not one ounce of anti-shoplifting technology. It was the perfect set-up for aspiring shoplifters.

As a result of their lack of security tags, etc. the retail theft prevention “plan” relied exclusively on apprehensions. What was most difficult about working for this store was the distinctive category of thief; one I had previously encountered sporadically in my years of experience, but never in this volume. The troubling situation I’m referring to is adult females shoplifting with their children present.

As I mentioned, I had encountered cases involving mothers and their offspring acting as accomplices and I had also detained the occasional mother with her children in tow. However, I had never witnessed the kind of neglect, endangerment, and blatant disregard for a child’s well-being as I did at this retailer.

These women committed acts of retail theft leading to situations that confused and terrified their children and frequently jeopardized the children’s safety during arrest. One subject hid a pair of denim jeans under her baby carrier in the stroller, another hid a hat in her diaper bag, and one woman even concealed jewelry in her infant’s diaper.

Upon detainment, we would have to not only deal with a difficult shoplifter, but also the terrified , screaming toddlers and the consequent question of what to do with them when mommy goes to jail with the police.

Without a doubt, this particular store’s lack of a thorough retail theft prevention policy led to the frequency of these incidents. These mothers could have attempted to steal the merchandise available at other department stores, but this retailer didn’t pose the problem of defeating the Checkpoint security system with their children in tow.

Shopping with children in tow also predisposes the thief to be at ease thinking that they don’t look suspicious and can easily deflect the attention of an inexperienced LP associate when Checkpoint security tags and Checkpoint systems  are not in place to act as anti-shoplifting constraints.

Building Blogs of an EAS Clothing Security Tags

Almost everyone has seen an EAS tag, but not everyone understands what they do or how they work. Clothing security tags, and Checkpoint tags specifically, consist of two pieces of hard plastic. One side has a steel pin attached. The other side has a tiny hole to receive the pin as it pierces through the material of a garment.

The checkpoint tags are virtually indestructible once clamped together. They require the use of a detacher to remove them. I have observed shoplifters attempting to pry them off, cut them off, and even burn the plastic off.  Few succeed and if they do manage to succeed, success is bittersweet.  Either the clothing is destroyed or the ink inside is busted in the process rendering the item useless.

The clothing security tags referred to as ink tags are hard EAS tags that contain two ampoules of dye in one of the sides. There is generally a blue dye and a glow in the dark dye that will stain whatever the inks contact.

EAS refers to electronic article surveillance. In basic terms, security tags on clothes contain an RF transmitter.  When this transmitter intersects the path of the clothing alarm – those big towers flanking the doors of a retailer – an extremely audible alarm sounds.

Security tags on clothes – also referred to as EAS tags – are used in the majority of large chain stores. It is equally advantageous for small boutiques and small box stores to utilize the EAS tags for clothing security.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase clothing alarm, clothing security tags, as well as Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system.

What Level Is For You? – Alpha 3 Alarm

I know that there are different EAS tags and devices out there, but when I first started researching products, I didn’t know what exactly is the difference between the Alpha Security Alpha 2 Alarm and the Alpha 3 Alarm retail anti theft devices.

It didn’t take me long to realize that Alpha Security had created different levels of protection against in store theft.

The most basic level is the typical EAS system.  A product has a tag that alarms when the tag passes through the field generated by two towers at an exit door. We see this format in just about every big box retailer out there.

But what if you are trying to prevent shoplifting by more experienced shoplifters? This is where the need for Alpha 2 Alarm occurs. This device has an audible alarm that comes directly from the retail anti theft device if it is tampered with. So not only does the EAS device sound off at the door if it is not deactivated, but it also sounds if it is tampered with inside the store.

Now if you are still looking for the big daddy of alarms, use the Alpha 3 Alarm. It has the alarm capabilities of both levels one and two. But the biggest difference is that an Alpha 3 Alarm will sound if the retail anti theft device (and the product) leaves the store without being paid for. So the screech of the alarm will not stop at the doors. It wills stay with the EAS device – and more importantly the product. This makes the shoplifter even more conspicuous than what they want to be.

In a nutshell, the alarms signal the level of protection in preventing shoplifting.

Is trust alone sufficient without Pre Employment Screening?

There is always some apprehension involved when one hires an employee. One needs to know that the new hire is both honest and hardworking and that the new hire will earn your confidence as well as confirm that you made a good hiring decision. The last thing an employer wants to discover is that a new employee is utterly unlike the person he or she presented during the interview.

Completing a thorough and detailed pre-employment screening is the most effective way to ease some of this apprehension. An effective pre-employment screening must include more than simply a question and answer session. An essential ingredient in an effective screening is a skills or critical thinking test – the perfect technique to get a more conclusive perspective of the candidate’s capabilities and skill set.

The employee background check is another effective tactic. This background check should include criminal and credit checks, if applicable. It is also important to take it a step further by verifying previous employment and education listed on job applications.

While the background check company effectively runs employee background checks, it is an excellent practice for the employer to run a practical background check. Simply pick up the phone and call the references listed. It is amazing how few people actually call references given by a candidate. It is also amazing what some references actually have to say about the candidate.

Let background check company alleviate your apprehension – allow them to perform pre-employment screening and you can rest knowing whom you can better trust to hire.

Pizza Tonight? – Advantages of Loss Prevention Training

There doesn’t seem to be a direct correlation between employee theft, shoplifting and Loss Prevention Seminars, unless someone is shoplifting a pizza- at least not a first glance.

I have a newfound love of cooking and baking. While it is a pastime I have always enjoyed, I have recently started to take it more seriously by experimenting with more difficult recipes and techniques.

While I have been enjoying the challenge, my family is not always better off. In fact, we have a standing rule at the house that if I make anything inedible, we order out for pizza. No questions asked, and no ones feelings get hurt.

While there have only been a few times the Pizza Rule has been called into play, there have definitely been several instances where the food was not anywhere close to the desired result. Runny Pudding and Biscuit Pucks and Crazy Spicy BBQ sauce were only a few of the mistakes in execution. Since I find most of the recipes online, it ends up being trial and error to figure most of them out.

The ones that are more accurate the first time around are the concoctions that have a video attached. It is infinitely easier to be successful when you can see and have someone walk you step by step through a process, instead of trying to follow written directions with no one to assist you.

It is the same thing as reading a loss prevention manual, and having actual loss prevention training. A book can only take you so far. Having someone offer verbal and visual loss prevention training greatly increases your chances of being successful. Cooking classes are like a loss prevention workshop.

RAT in Retail Theft Prevention

When investigating methods in order to implement an effective retail theft prevention program, it is critical to consider the process when attempting to understand why an offense occurs and why some measures are effective and why others fail to deter crime.

Routine Activity Theory (developed by Marcus Felson and Lawrence E. Cohen) draws on the principles of Rational Choice Theory and Situational Crime Prevention to address these issues.

A delinquent act occurs through the interaction of three necessary conditions: offenders (shoplifters), targets (merchandise), and locations where offenders and targets intersect (retail stores). Furthermore, each condition has a controller because the controller influences each condition: handler, guardian, or manager.

Handlers are individuals with whom an offender has an emotional attachment and can shape their actions. Guardians are responsible for protecting the targets, such as Checkpoint security tags or security guards. Finally, managers are the retailers, owners, and employees who affect the functioning of the retail environment.

According to RAT, a crime is likely to occur if an offender meets a target in a place that lacks controls. For the purposes of this particular anti-shoplifting analysis, guardians are the most crucial control in establishing retail theft prevention.

Most retailers are unable to direct an offender’s actions or determine if they have proper role models in their life. In addition, managers can only manipulate the environment to a certain degree without impeding an honest customer’s enjoyable shopping experience and risking undesirable consequences in this competitive and litigious society.

Retailers can most effectively deter shoplifting by applying the guardian controller to protect merchandise when using RAT to determine retail theft prevention procedures. The most valuable guardian is Checkpoint security tags when applying this controller in terms of anti-shoplifting endeavors.

Stores have less risk of becoming places where offenders and targets meet without controls when taking advantage of solutions offered by loss prevention experts who utilize Checkpoint systems.

Profit Killers – Internal Theft

I was taught three things cause shrink throughout my loss prevention career: internal theft, external theft, and paperwork error. The number one cause is internal theft, followed by shoplifting, then operational miscues.

Conducting an employee theft investigation is imperative to keep track of employees. These investigations take very little time to complete and are extremely beneficial in weeding out dishonest employees who are causing more harm than good to your business.

In order to prevent employee theft, store management together with loss prevention has an obligation to monitor and follow up on transactions that appear out of the ordinary. When dishonest employees are apprehended and their employment terminated, other employees take note. The end result is more employees who are disinclined to act dishonestly.

The impact is extremely powerful when an employee is considering stealing and observes a co-worker being escorted out of the store by loss prevention, or in extreme cases the police. When employees realize that their work is monitored at all times internal theft is prevented.

The worst cause of shrink is employee theft and unfortunately it does occur. However, with loss prevention initiating and concluding a proper employee theft investigation, the amount of loss is reduced and profit increases. Attending to effective loss prevention produces and maintains honest and productive employees in your business.

Road Trip – Never without Clothing Security

I just came back from a great weekend with my family. We took a road trip to visit one of the national museums that we had wanted to tour for some time. It was well worth the trip, even my toddler loved it.

We decided to take a quick swing through the gift shop on our way out after we had walked all seven floors of the museum. We observed that they had a large quantity of clothing for sale, but none of it seemed to have any clothing security tags.

It seemed quite unusual for a tourist attraction not to have any visible clothing security.  Upon closer examination, I observed clothing security in the form of soft labels imbedded into the price tags of the clothes.  Although they didn’t use clothing security tags, there was still a form of protection in place, but it wasn’t overtly obvious. I thought it was a pretty smart move.

No doubt this store has its share of shoplifters, but the number of false activations from their clothing alarm are greatly reduced because someone forgot to remove a hard tag. The soft tags are disarmed as soon as they are placed on the counters at the wrap stand.

The last thing one wants in a museum is to have a clothing alarm going off every few minutes. This individualized program for clothing security was very well designed to suit the unique needs of a specialty store.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase a clothing alarm or clothing security tags and an Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system and to get a system personalized to the needs of YOUR store.
