Is Time on Your Side? – Background Check Company

It does not make a difference if you are conducting pre-employment screening for a new employee or background checks for a current one. The question remains the same – what are your resources compared to those of a background check company?

I would start by asking myself how much time I have to spend on this task?

The next question I would need to ask is what other commitments do I have for that same time frame. If you are like most of us, we rarely are tasked with a single item at a time. There are ongoing issues to be dealt with, reports to run or create, stores to operate and sell in… You get the idea.

So I will ask again.

What is the time frame that I am working under?

The answer is usually a very slim time frame.

I don’t have time to conduct pre-employment screening twice. As long as nothing completely egregious shows up, I will be satisfied. I am also probably only going to skim the surface of what a background check company could do.

Now let’s ask those same questions of a background check company.

How much time do they have to run those same background checks? Do they have the time and or other resources to run a more in depth check?

Can they conduct pre-employment screening a second time if there is an error, or if something didn’t show up properly?

I would safely answer yes to those questions.

Rise Above the Challenge – Alpha Nano Gate

At a high-end retailer that I used to work for, the store had two levels with escalators going up and down in the center atrium. If anyone went up or down, we knew about it. There was no need to have anything like Alpha Nano Gate at the escalators because of our great visibility.

Where we could have used the Alpha Security Nano Gate was at the elevator. These were tucked away in a far corner right next to an exterior door.  To this day, I don’t know how much merchandise we lost out that door because someone picked up something on the second floor, went on the elevator and then scooted right out the door. It was because we had no way to prevent shoplifting in the elevator.

It was first brought to my attention when an employee had seen two women pick up several designer suits and hastily scurry toward the elevator. My employee was smart and called down to the department closest to the elevator on the bottom floor and told them to wait by the elevator and offer their assistance.

Sure enough, as soon as the elevator opened, the women were shocked to see someone waiting. They handed over the stack of suits and left the store with out trying on or buying anything.

A Hard Choice To Make – Checkpoint Security tags

One of the biggest deterrents for shop owners over the years has been the fact that the pins used on Checkpoint security tags are serrated. That basically means they have tiny ridges that help keep the pin locked into place. It is a part of anti-shoplifting standards used by Checkpoint Systems for retail theft prevention.

The reason why it is an unfortunate deterrent for shop owners is that these serrations can snag delicate or stretchy fabrics. These owners have been willing to take the risk of shoplifters over the risk of damaging their fabrics either while attaching the pins, or during the deactivation process. It is a hard decision to make; choosing between retail theft prevention and maintaining quality of merchandise standards for their customers.

Well there is good news for these shop owners. Checkpoint security systems have made a better option to help all shop owners stop shoplifting in their stores.

Now Checkpoint security tags come with the option of serrated pins or smooth ones. These smooth pins are much less likely to snag those problematic fabrics. This makes for a far better solution for retail theft prevention in these stores using the Checkpoint Security System for their own anti shoplifting needs.

Either Inside or Out – Clothing Security tags

When we think of loss prevention or retail security, we typically think that we have a need for security tags on clothes to protect our inventory and merchandise from shoplifting. However, most retail statistics account for about forty percent of their inventory losses due to employee theft. The sad reality is that a single dishonest employee can do more damage in a short period of time than some gangs of shoplifters can incur over an entire year.

That leaves sixty percent of your inventory losses coming from other sources. Don’t be so quick to think that the rest is from shoplifting either.

It is more realistic to think that only twenty percent of your shrink comes from shoplifting – maybe thirty, depending on your location and demographic. That means the other thirty to forty percent is unaccounted for.

This last category of losses would come from operational errors. That means your inventory losses are from things like incorrect shipments, damages, or incorrect sales or return information.

Any way you look at it, the majority of losses can potentially be avoided by adding clothing security tags. Checkpoint tags, being one of the most reliable forms of clothing security, are a worthwhile investment to help reduce your inventory losses due to theft.

A Reason for the Policies- Employee Theft Investigation

The most recent consultation I did was for a little convenience market. There were very few policies in place, which made it just that much easier for employee theft to take place. I sometimes do loss prevention consultations for small business owners; however, I usually don’t go in as loss prevention.

Generally I go in as an overall operational consultant. It is easier to offer my services that way rather than saying I am here to see who is stealing from you. No owner wants to hear they have internal theft.

This particular owner was too insecure about being a tough boss. He wanted to be easy going, and easy to work with. I think he was afraid that if he acted too much like a boss, his employees would leave, or he would not find anyone who wanted to be hired for his shop.

Unfortunately, because of his lack of policies, his employees took advantage of him. They arrived late for work and frequently called in unable to work. This caused animosity to the other employees who were held up waiting for replacements to show up and relieve them of their shifts.

The employees were also allowed to ring themselves up. Several employees again took advantage of the situation. Knowing no one would check their purchases; they started adding extra, unpaid items to their bags.

As a result of the employee theft investigation, half of the staff was terminated for employee theft. It also opened his eyes to the importance of having policies in place.

In A Constant State of Fluctuation – Bottle Locks

We, as a store, spend more time merchandising than any other task. We are constantly restocking our shelves, making the bottles front faced and full on the shelf. We make sure that our Alpha Security bottle locks are in place and that they are not a negative impact to our visual directives.

How do you spend your payroll hours? For most of us, we do everything we can to maximize the productivity that we can get from our employees while on the clock. For me, the biggest use of my employees’ time is stocking and merchandising. That includes insuring our bottle security procedures are followed.

That is one of the things I like best about the EASy bottle locks. They do the job they are supposed to do (bottle security) without impacting the job my employees and I need to do.

We can stock the shelves at maximum capacity, which makes it easy for my customers to find the items they are looking for in stock. It also means that the bottles can be front faced without any issues.

The locks are designed to be space conscious, by not having excessive bulk and reducing the amount of bottles I can put on a shelf. They have also made it easy to read the tax stamp, so I will have no issues passing my state audits.

Get Off To The Right Start – Employee Background Checks

Most people who have a spotty background or work history have a way of sniffing out companies who do not run pre-employment screening, or who do not call for references. This puts those companies and stores at a higher risk for poor performance, excessive absences, and ultimately a higher risk of cash and merchandise theft.

As a retail security manager, I have had the pleasure of working with some of the best companies out there. I have also had the misfortune of working with some of the worst, especially when it comes to pre-employment screening. It’s not that these companies were bad, it was more about the resources they had available to them and to their employees for conducting the pre-employment screening.

I noticed a significant difference in several areas depending on how thorough of an employee background check the company did. One of the biggest areas of difference was in turnover rates. The companies who spent the time and resources to run a better check ended up with employees who seemed to stay longer.

Their retention wasn’t centered on the employees’ happiness; it was more specifically about the termination rate by management of their poor performing employees.

I also noticed that there was a higher rate of inventory discrepancies and unexplained cash shortages in those stores and companies that did not conduct thorough employee background checks.

Simple Needs – Prevent Shoplifting

With all of the retail anti-theft devices on the market, it can be confusing and overwhelming to try and figure out what is the most useful for your shop. Just look at the Alpha Security line or retail anti-theft devices. There are more products than I can count and each one has its own special purpose.

Alpha Security designed their products with both Alpha 2 Alarm and Alpha 3 Alarm capabilities.

You can probably figure out which Alpha Security product you need to prevent shoplifting just by matching them up with the inventory item you are trying to protect. That’s the easy part to prevent shoplifting. Now it is time to figure out if you need an Alpha 2 Alarm or an Alpha 3 Alarm.

An Alpha 2 Alarm product will only activate if tampered with and the door alarms will sound if not deactivated. That is good for products where someone tries to take merchandise out of the box/ packaging to steal it, like electronics or power tools.

For an item like a high theft, expensive handbag you might want to use the Alpha 3 Alarm. This alarm will activate not only if the tag is tampered with, but will also provide an audible directly from the tag if the handbag is removed from the store without being deactivated. It is handy if the bag is concealed as the method of theft.

Components of a Label – Checkpoint Security System

There are many parts of Checkpoint systems, each doing their own special part in Checkpoint Labels.

Most people are more familiar with their counter part – Checkpoint tags. Checkpoint tags are easily identified and are used in the majority of retailers who sell clothes. They are meant to be visible so people are aware of them.

Checkpoint labels, on the other hand, and not meant to be visible. They are a much more covert part of retail theft prevention. Checkpoint labels are most commonly found embedded in a price or manufacturer’s tag. They are an inexpensive way for retailer’s to protect their product because many vendors will put these embedded tags on at the point of distribution. This is called source tagging.

Other manufacturers are putting these Checkpoint labels actually inside of articles of clothing. There is a major shoe and clothing brand that puts these labels inside the lining of their shoes so thieves cannot find them to remove them.

Lastly you can order rolls of labels to put on merchandise at your own discretion based on your store’s anti-shoplifting needs.

Good Fences Make Good Neighbors – Clothing Security

It is hard to be a small business owner. When I think of a quaint local boutique, I don’t think of Checkpoint Tags, I think of customer service and personalized shopping. Just as they say good fences make good neighbors, clothing security tags make for a great shopping experience.

The clothing security can be an expensive investment, and really, what is the point behind clothing security tags? Why should we go to all of the trouble to make sure we have security tags on clothes?

I don’t have a theft problem in my store. It would offend my customers if I were too overbearing. Either that, or I am afraid that they will suspect that I do have a theft problem and they will go somewhere else to shop.

The reality is that the times are changing. Demographics change, as do neighborhoods, and individual customer finances. The shop that you opened may not always be that safe and secure. It is better to protect yourself and your clients by making a proactive statement up front. You want shoplifters to know that you and your security measures will always be relevant. You will never be the victim, as you will always strive to be one step ahead.
