Why Should We? – Clothing Security

Really, what is the point behind clothing security? Why should we go to all of the trouble to make sure our Checkpoint tags are on all of our clothes? The clothing security tags can be an expensive investment.

I don’t have a theft problem in my store. It would offend my customers if I were too overbearing. Also, I would not want my customers to suspect that I do have a theft problem and lose them to another shop.

It is hard to be a small business owner. When I think of a quaint local boutique, I don’t think of security tags on clothes, I think of customer service and personalized shopping.

The reality is that the times are changing. Demographics change, as do neighborhoods and individual customer finances. The shop that you opened may not always be that safe and secure. It is better to protect yourself and your clients by making a proactive statement up front. You want shoplifters to know that you and your security measures will always be relevant. You will never be the victim, as you will always strive to be one step ahead.

Just as they say good fences make good neighbors, clothing security makes for a great shopping experience.

Why am I here? – Loss Prevention Training

There is nothing worse than sitting through a Loss Prevention training program and discounting the presentation as it is going on. I think we have all been there, hoping to find a way to take a suggested method and apply it, all the while knowing that the criteria or resources do not apply to your specific situation.

By making the subject matter relevant to the audience, your employees are more likely to walk away from the presentation with useful knowledge that they can actually apply.

For many store employees that are faced with the task of attending a loss prevention workshop, they might feel like they are in for an extremely boring presentation about information that either doesn’t apply to them, or they will never have a practical use for.

Unfortunately, In some cases that might be true. There are many presenters for loss prevention seminars that drone on incessantly about building employee theft cases or how to stop shoplifting. Neither of which may apply to your average store employee.

A good presenter, however, will give ways to deter shoplifters and how customer service can curtail shoplifting. Good loss prevention seminars will also give ways to stop and prevent employee theft through operational controls and awareness.

By making the subject matter relevant to the audience, your employees are more likely to walk away from the presentation with useful knowledge that they can actually apply.

EAS-ily Overlooked – EASy Bottle

I recently came across an bottle security and theft of alcohol. Well, this one was had nothing to do with alcohol or liquor bottle security.

This owner had been smart enough to use bottle locks for his bottle security- specifically the Alpha Security EASy Bottle. His inventory was right in line where it needed to be, at least in the alcohol department. He was having an issue with his mixers.

He kept a reach in cooler filled with mixers of various types, which also included some non-alcoholic drinks like sodas and energy drinks.

It seemed strange that he was ordering these mixers more frequently than normal. After a closer look, it turned out that his employees were grazers. A grazer is an employee who grazes throughout their shift. They will pick up random drinks, like water or sodas to consume during the course of their shift. They might also take items found at the registers like packs of gum, chips, candy bars and crackers to snack on.

Because these are such commonplace items, it is not as easily identified when employees take them directly out of the store’s inventory, versus bringing them from home.

The best course of action is to require employees to not allow food on the sales floor, and maintaining a close watch on your inventory, just as you would with the rest of your liquor bottle security.

High Performance Vehicle – Prevent Shoplifting

What do cars and clothes have in common? Both have alarms on them that people have stopped paying attention to. Retail theft prevention needs to find a way to get past the false alarm and really start to prevent shoplifting.

Alpha Security systems are designed with a retail anti-theft device (like their Alpha 2 Alarm or the Alpha 3 Alarm) and some sort of transmission system like a pedestal or the Alpha Security Alpha Nano Gate.

These components come in a variety of applications and specializations. They also provide specific levels of protection.

For an item like a high theft, expensive handbag you might want an Alpha 3 Alarm. The alarm will activate not only if the tag is tampered with, but will also provide an audible directly from the tag if the handbag is removed from the store without being deactivated. It is handy if the bag is concealed as the method of theft.

If your retail anti-theft device needs are simple, use an Alpha 2 Alarm product. It will only activate if tampered with and the door alarms will sound if not deactivated. That is good for products where someone tries to take merchandise out of the box/packaging to steal it, like electronics or power tools.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store for Alpha 2Alarm, Alpha 3Alarm, Alpha Fashion2, Alpha Jewel Lok, Alpha Nano Gate,  Alpha Shark Tag, Alpha Spider Wrap and other retail anti-theft devices from Alpha Security to use in conjunction with your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system that can help you prevent shoplifting in your business.

It’s The Little Things – Employee Theft

There is a growing trend among many small businesses and low volume stores that is a “little” concerning. It is the theft of small cash wrap items caused by employee theft.

As an investigator, I am usually tasked with an employee theft investigation only when large or repetitive cash shortages or merchandise discrepancies appear. It is not very common to look at small dollar internal theft cases.

What we are seeing, though, is that many employees are taking small items at the register such as a pack of gum or a candy bar. Sometimes it might be a drink from the store’s coolers. Often, the employee simply forgets to have someone ring those purchases because they were distracted after taking the item.

Most of these employees are cashiers, so they are close to these items throughout the course of their normal shift. They take the items while they are on the clock, which is why they get distracted easily when a customer comes up to pay, or the manager is busy elsewhere in the store.

It might only happen once, or it might be a few times before this employee realizes that no one caught his or her mistake. No one noticed that the pack of gum or soda was never paid for. It is in that moment that the employee will continue to take those items because they know that no one is watching.

Stop and Choose – Checkpoint Security System

When you are preparing to use the Checkpoint Security System for anti- shoplifting, there is one basic decision that you need to make. The decision is between using Checkpoint Labels and using Checkpoint Security tags.

It is not that you have to make a decision to completely use either the Checkpoint Labels or to use the Checkpoint Security Tags. It is perfectly acceptable and actually recommended to use a combination of the two in order to stop shoplifting. You have to make decisions on which of your products will use the Checkpoint Labels or the Checkpoint Security Tags.

Since the Checkpoint Security System is compatible with both products, it is easy to use them simultaneously. The Checkpoint Labels are great with merchandise that has a flat, hard surface. They work as price labels on a box or on an existing tag. The labels also are good on small items like a jewelry card, or a medicine bottle. They are easy to use in pockets of clothing or accessories like wallets or bags.

The Checkpoint Security Tags are great on items that are soft, like fabrics. Because they traditionally pierce the item with a dual sided tag and pin, clothing items respond well to this type of Checkpoint Systems.

It Wasn’t Me – Pre-Employment Screening

My brother recently graduated from business school. He went back to school a little later in life, nevertheless, we were all so very proud of him. Even better, he had been offered an ideal job right after graduation. How many of us can say that in this tough economy! Everything seemed to be coming up roses until his pre-employment screening results came back.

His potential employer had not used a reputable background check company to run their pre-employment screenings. In fact, they didn’t use a background check company at all. They used an in house program to search through the internet databases to get their results from the background check.

Well, his pre-employment screening turned up criminal hits from a state he had never even visited. Because of this, he had received communication from the employer that his job offer was being rescinded due to the results.

After much discussion and secondary verification, the problem was solved. When they ran the background check, they had only used his name and date of birth. There was a match to someone meeting these very limited search qualifications, and thus the problem started. After they used additional information like his driver’s license and social security numbers (and matching up his photo id to the mug shot on file) they were able to verify who my brother really was, and who he was not.

Put Passion In Its Place – Its Easy in a Loss Prevention Workshop

My husband hates meetings. I always chuckle to myself anytime he has to go to any sort of meeting, regardless of what it is. I have to agree with him, though. Meetings generally are no fun. It is a full day of being stuck in a lightless room, with monotonous presenters and ill prepared presentations. The only meetings I ever looked forward to, were the ones I presented at.

I think it was because not only did I have control over the pace and quality of the meeting, but I had an exciting topic to present about: shoplifting and employee theft.

Giving loss prevention seminars was fun because I could make it fun. I was passionate about my chosen field of work, but I was also passionate about helping people learn. You really need both.

A Loss Prevention workshop is nothing more than any other boring meeting if you don’t have someone who has passion. They can get the attendees riled up and interested in what is being said. If your employees are interested in the meeting, you have a better chance of them actually retaining parts of the presentation.

That is why they are at the Loss Prevention training to begin with. I doesn’t matter how many times you say the words shoplifting or employee theft. If your employees don’t retain the information then it was just a waste of time for all involved.

Control the Burn- Bottle Locks

Have you ever gone into a liquor store and stood in the aisle for what seems to be a seriously long amount of time? Yeah, I’ll admit, I have. It is usually when I am trying to decide between a few brands of a particular type of liquor I am not completely familiar with. It is even harder to decide when the store’s bottle security is keeping the bottles behind a locked glass case.

It is hard to decide on a bottle when all you have to go on is the products label. Liquor bottles aren’t like other products. There are very few graphics or descriptions. Some inexpensive liquors are reasonable, and some are inexpensive for a reason.

While some states are allowing for controlled sampling by liquor stores, there are regulations that must be followed. These regulations keep the bottles sanitary. They also check identifications for age and authenticity. Bottle locks keep these regulations in check as well as providing contact with the customer and the bottle.

There is no longer a need to keep the bottles behind a locked case when they are using the Alpha Security Bottle Locks. These EASy Bottle locks keep the liquor on the shelf when it needs to be sold. These same bottle locks also keep the contents of open bottles secured when they are being used for tasting purposes. It’s a great way to change your bottle security.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase EASy Bottle bottle locks by Alpha Security and your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system.

A Little Something For You – Alpha 2 Alarm

When I picture EAS alarms, I have images of hard plastic tags with pins designed for clothing stores or stuck inside of DVDs. These tags set off the alarms at the doors at the big retail shops that need them to prevent shoplifting. What doesn’t come to mind is liquor stores using retail anti theft devices for security in their stores.

Obviously, the little plastic tags and pins are completely ineffective on a glass liquor or wine bottle. As a small business owner with limited resources, there is no room for error or for the margin loss incurred by the theft of even one bottle. It is shame that these hardworking shop owners were left with minimal protection.

Luckily, Alpha Security changed all of that. They created several retail anti theft devices specifically designed for liquor and wine bottles. Alpha Security created a line of bottle locks that range from small clear caps to steel bands all embedded with EAS tags. Some of them even boast the alarms (think Alpha 2 Alarm) hidden inside.

The Alpha 2 Alarm will sound at the exit doors, as well as sounding inside the store if the Alpha 2 alarm is tampered with.
