Keep It Flexible – Alpha Fashion2

There are now more skillful ways to prevent shoplifting. The Alpha Fashion2 Accessory Tag by Alpha Security is a small lanyard that can thread through even the smallest of details on a dress shoe.

The smaller overall size of the tag also helps keep it customer friendly so it does not take away from a customer trying the shoes on. I know from experience too. At my very first retail job I was assigned the task of retagging the entire shoe department because some inexperienced (or apathetic) clerk put the tags on the wrong way. The large, bulky ink tag part was on the inside of the shoe (instead of the pin) and no one could comfortably try them on.

The Alpha Fashion2 tag is better able to prevent shoplifting. This retail anti-theft device is better suited for more shoe applications. It is a small design – 1.8” x .55” x .80” so it does not get in the way of customers. It also has a sleeker design making it suitable for even high-end retail applications.

While no retail anti-theft devices will completely fit every single style of shoe out there, the Alpha Fashion2 Accessory Tag will be much more flexible with the variety of shoes it can be used on.

The Gift in the Lift – Retail Theft Prevention

A study done by one of the major credit card companies showed that shoplifting is secondary only to going out to eat as a form of personal reward. Yikes! It makes me wonder just how many people out there are shoplifting. It also makes more sense why it is important to utilize as many forms or retail theft prevention as possible.

Regarding shoplifting, getting a “lift” can actually mean two separate things. It is the literal shop-lift or the act of the theft that amateur or opportunist shoplifters are looking for. They can get also get the emotional or adrenaline lift from stealing and getting away with something. Just as there are shoppers who can get a similar lift from a great sale (think day after thanksgiving sale madness) these are people who get the psychological lift from getting something for free.

At some point, the need for the lift has to be significantly reduced through the probability (not just a possibility) of getting caught. If you cannot provide enough incentive to NOT steal, the internal need to steal will overcome a potentially honest shopper. Having retail theft prevention that is visible and eminent will help persuade them to stop shoplifting in your store.

Basic Trouble Shooting – Clothing Alarm

Security training is not just about proper placement of clothing security tags. It is about how the clothing security system works as a whole and the role your employees play.

You have to teach your employees how to use the system. The more they know about how the clothing alarm responds to Checkpoint tags the better they will be at merchandising and customer service. Show them what happens when clothing security tags come close to the exit doors.

How close can you get with Checkpoint tags before the clothing alarm goes off? It is important to know that customers can be shopping close by with no intention of exiting the store and still set an alarm off.  Your employees need to know the difference so they can reassure the customers that they simply walked to close to the doors, and no one thinks they are shoplifting.

They also need to know how close to the doors they can merchandise product with clothing security tags or they will set off false alarms all day long. It never fails to amaze me how often employees are convinced that the clothing alarm is broken when it goes off. The reality is that someone changed the merchandising and put a rack of with security tags on clothes too close to the doors. It doesn’t require an expensive service call to fix it, but moving the rack a few more inches away.

Never Gets Old – Loss Prevention Seminars

My two year old has recently started taking an interest in cartoons; both on the computer and on the TV. As a new parent, I was totally against it at first. My child simply should not be in front of anything so bad as a tv, for whatever reason. But after looking at what is available to her I started to change my mind, especially after seeing so many Loss prevention seminars.

While at first it might seem like that is a completely obscure reference point, Let me take a moment to explain. The shows that my daughter is most drawn to are ones that she was learning from. There were colors and numbers, songs to sing and things to learn about. This was a way to in essence begin to give her the world – begin her love of learning.

She needs to be exposed to the things the world has created and has to offer. And she needs to have fun while learning. That is where I made the connection with Loss prevention seminars.

Who doesn’t want to have fun while they learn? No one is really interested in sitting in a conference room for hours listening to some random guy speak. We need to be able to enjoy our education in whatever form it might take.

Sitting on the Back Porch – Employee Theft

In fact, we just had a case of employee theft where the employee was ringing up only one chair, but a stack of four chairs were going out the door. They had figured that we would not notice what was going on because he was ringing something up on the register.

He also figured that if we did notice a shortage of chairs, he could say that he didn’t know and it was a mistake. To a certain extent, that was true. When we did notice the shortage, we first thought it was an operational error and not internal theft. Perhaps if we had trained the employee to recognize how to properly sell those chairs, we would have prevented that shortage.

As we continued researching the chair shortages (because there was more than one) we realized that this employee was actually letting more merchandise go out he door unpaid. We knew then that we needed to resolve this by conducting a full on employee theft investigation.

The same “customer” came back for four more chairs, and some dishes, and some napkins, and some candles, all going out the door for the price of one chair. As it turns out, this “customer” was the brother of the employee. They had a new house and were making an outdoor dining area. The employee decided to take advantage of a known operational issue and thought he would slide right under the radar with his employee theft.

Better Security – Liquor Bottle Security

You will find some of the best security features in EASy Bottle bottle locks. They have a two stage locking mechanism, which helps ensure a solid lock on the product that will not come off in the hands of a shoplifter.

From an employee’s perspective, they are easy to remove and attach. This cuts down on the amount of payroll needed to ensure compliance. We all know that if something is easy to use, the chances of that product or process actually being used consistently (and properly) increases tenfold.

From a financial perspective, there is a good return on the initial investment. Alpha Security bottle locks are constructed from an extremely durable polycarbonate material, which makes them reusable. There is a very minimal ongoing maintenance cost. It is more likely that a bottle lock will be replaced because it was lost by an associate than because it was broken.

Some of the other benefits of using the locks for liquor bottle security are for a simple application; you gain maximum protection through product denial. It will protect you from in store sampling in addition to being a deterrent for shoplifting.

They also cover a wide range of bottle types making them a versatile application to fit all of your needs. Even the most unique sizes and shapes of bottles will be protected. It simplifies the liquor bottle security since there is only one type of lock to use and keep track of to protect all your bottles.

The X Factor – Background Checks

We all know better than to hire or not hire someone based on their age, but it is important to understand the current trend Generation X employees are setting. It needs to become clear why running background checks are so important. There is a lot more that can be uncovered during pre-employment screening that might not be found during an interview.

The Generation X age range is the section of employees that have had ample time to get their college education – this includes Master’s and Ph D levels. They are also the ones that have years of experience in their field, but still might take a job for less money. This makes them a desirable hire for the current workforce.

However…

According to a recent poll about 44% of all jobs are held by a Generation Xer. Of those, 53% are completely disengaged and an additional 19% are so unhappy at their jobs they feel the need to make everyone else around them miserable too.

The flip side is that once hired, these employees tend to become very unhappy. That makes them more likely to perform poorly, or even starts to cross lines into employee theft.

Background checks help you evaluate potential risk. They can uncover high frequencies in job changes and possibly a trend that they might be leaving jobs quickly due to theft or other job related investigations. Background checks have a better potential to determine if there is a habit of theft of performance related issues than simply looking at an application.

A Cut Above The Rest – Alpha 2 Alarm

When you attach an Alpha 2 Alarm retail anti-theft device, you want to be sure it is going to do everything it can to prevent shoplifting. That is why when Alpha Security made their retail anti-theft devices like the Alpha 2 Alarm, they thought about every single component.

One of the most impressive parts of the Alpha 2 Alarm tags is not the actual alarm or the technology that is carried inside of these little devices. What is really impressive is the security cable that wraps around the merchandise and connects the tag.

This security cable is specially designed to not be cut. There is an exterior coating that protects your merchandise from catches and snags. The interior is super strong while remaining thin and pliable. You could try to cut this cable with everything from kitchen scissors to wire cutters and the cable will remain uncut and undamaged.

When you put a retail anti-theft device on your merchandise you want to ensure that it stays put and can stand up against tampering. The Alpha 2 Alarm tags will do just that.

One in Three – Anti Shoplifting

I recently read an article that said approximately one in three shoplifters will steal again. It is very surprising that so many shoplifters will continue their path of theft even after an apprehension. It makes for an interesting perspective on the tools we use for anti-shoplifting.

After reading this article, I came to realize that it is not simply a matter of using something like Checkpoint systems to alert you and your employees to potential shoplifters in your store. It is really about making your store less than desirable for a shoplifter to even enter your store. The ideal is to stop shoplifting completely before it begins. Making the shoplifters go away from your store instead of victimizing it.

Anti-shoplifting tools are about prevention, more specifically, it is about prevention once a shoplifter enters your store. If you can, try to take those tools another step further. Put signs on your doors saying shoplifters will be prosecuted.  For example, how about having a sign that says you monitor the premises through electronic and remote surveillance? That would help further the impression that the store is monitored by someone who may or may not be visible in the store.

Keep It Off The Shelves – Clothing Security

Clothing security goes beyond just putting security tags on clothes in your store. It involves taking a second look at the opportunities your store presents. Can you reduce your shelf quantities and still make a positive impact on your sales? If so, do it. Take those items and back stock them.

By giving your store a different approach to theft prevention than just using Checkpoint tags, you will be better off. Reducing your shelf quantity is just another enhancement to your clothing security.

If you sell multiples of an item and need a large representation of this item, don’t sacrifice your sales through a shelf quantity reduction. However, those situations are generally more of an exception than a rule.

The right way is to look at your current sales and make a determination if you can make the reductions. Clothing security tags are very important to reducing your shrink losses on a permanent basis, but they are not the only way to go. By remembering that there are other enhancements that you can quickly make will only help you be proactive to specific issues as they arise.

If you notice that you are no longer shrinking an item, it is easy to increase the shelf quantities at that time.
