Lessen The Cases Of Employee Theft With Loss Prevention Seminars

250x250_2ndMost of the time, business owners are the last ones to know about the existence of employee theft within their business. There are a number of reasons to why this happens, and one of them is the fact that employees are not too comfortable with the idea of approaching their employers about what is happening.

In this case, it doesn’t mean that the employers are surly and do not have good working relationships with their employees. At times, it’s only an issue about employees being aware of the theft that is happening, but are reluctant to approach their employers on the matter. Providing a new way in which employers and employees can communicate with each other, employers can learn about these cases and take action about them immediately.

Now may be a good time to take part in some loss prevention training for your business. Through this, employers will be able to address the issue of theft in the business as well as talk about the issue with their employees. These loss prevention seminars have been specifically designed not only to address the issue of theft, but to make it easier for employees and employers to communicate when it comes to issues related to the business.

Loss prevention seminars will teach employers about how to broach the subject of employee theft to their employees. While some employees in the past may have committed theft, this does not mean that other employees will do the same as well. Not many people believe that theft exists in their workplace or that the crime has been committed by their workmates.

Soak Up The Profits – Checkpoint Labels

What many consumers are not aware of is Checkpoint labels actually go beyond the clothing department. Checkpoint Systems have retail theft prevention that is designed for specific grocery applications. The RF Soaker Pad is one of those products created for anti-shoplifting of fresh meats.

The nice thing about using these Checkpoint labels is that there are no additional processes that need to be conducted to stop shoplifting. The RF Soaker Pads are simply switched out instead of using the non-EAS pads. The production department puts these new soaker pads onto the Styrofoam package and then the meat goes on top.

The retail theft prevention comes from the Checkpoint labels that are pre imbedded into the soaker pads. This makes it easy for grocers to stop shoplifting fresh meats, which in turn helps to preserve and increase profitability.

From a more technical aspect, the Checkpoint labels that are imbedded in the soaker pad are designed to work after it has been in contact with the liquids. As long as at least half a pound of meat is placed on the soaker pad, the RF Soaker Pad is microwavable. This means there are no additional warnings or precautions that need to be made by the consumer if they chose to freeze and then defrost the meat via microwave.

Before the Problem – Liquor Bottle Security

I guess you really do have to know your market to determine whether or not you need liquor bottle security like EASy Bottle, made by Alpha Security. I would be concerned as time goes by, that you might need them down the road. Most small business owners will wait until after they have a theft problem before they feel the need to address it.

Liquor bottle security is frequently seen as an unnecessary expense. It is often  only after the inventory losses out number the financial investment required to get the needed quantities of bottle locks to mitigate those losses.

If an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, the same holds true for liquor bottle security. A small initial investment is potentially worth more than that same investment compounded by the incurred shrink losses.

Shoplifters and dishonest employees are hard to get rid of after a store has been deemed a “safe haven” for theft. Even after a security system is in place, it could still take months or even years to fully eradicate a swarm of shoplifters that are now plaguing your liquor store.

It is an unfortunate analogy, but shoplifters are really like a bad insect infestation. Sometimes it takes several fumigations to get rid of the problem. It is better to prevent the swarm from the beginning than to try and get rid of it after the fact.

What Do We Owe – Internal Theft

During an internal theft interview we get a chance to talk more in depth with the dishonest employee. Unfortunately we don’t always get the answers we need to questions like “why does internal theft happen”? I can say that there is one justification that most dishonest employees give us.

They tell us that they stole because they felt like they were owed something.

Sometimes they feel like they were slighted for a promotion. Others feel that the time and effort they put into the job is not adequately compensated.

It doesn’t matter that it might have been their choice and ambition to volunteer to work overtime or undesirable shifts initially. If, over time, they do not get the benefit (raise, promotion, recognition, etc.) they expected, they often ends up being a bitter and resentful employee.

We often discover that through the course of our employee theft investigation quite a few of the employees were at one time some of the best employees in the store or company. This can lead to an open door for employee theft. It is infinitely easier to steal if you have access to keys, alarm or safe codes, or overrides on a register.

One way to deter these thefts is to limit the access to all available resources. Can you put a check and balance into place through processes? Start using bag checks for all employees including yourself and your managers. Make sure the person making deposits is not the only one reconciling bank slips, shortages or overages.

Weed Out The Bad Seeds – Background Checks Experts

If you do not weed out the bad seeds up front, how much will their initial training and later on for the training of their replacement cost? What about your potential inventory or cash losses created from hiring a career criminal? Not every employer prosecutes for theft, even though they terminate employees for it. That means that running criminal background checks along side employment verification is critical to pre-employment screening.

Only you can analyze the costs of hiring background check experts versus accurately speculating the costs of potential employee theft.

Most companies find out that conducting some form of pre-employment screening will eventually balance out the costs associated with a single bad hire. Unfortunately, most of those companies figure it out only after a major case of employee theft has surfaced.

In order to conduct a realistic cost/benefit analysis, you need to be able to anticipate both the short and long term costs. In this situation, the comparison would be between the immediate or short term cost of paying background check experts, and the long-term costs associated with hiring and then rehiring a replacement for a bad hire.

When you hire background check experts, chances are they can investigate more points than you can yourself simply because they have the time and better resources. Once you factor in the time you would have to be paid to do the checks yourself, you might find the cost benefit analysis is swayed in a different direction.

The Game Changer- Alpha Jewel Lok

What if there was a way to prevent shoplifting that was designed specifically for jewelry? That would be such a game changer. Typically, retail anti-theft devices have not been designed with jewelry in mind. They are designed for clothing and have been adapted for jewelry and accessory usage only because there have not been other options available. As a result, these devices are usually attached to the packaging and not directly onto the jewelry.

This creates effectiveness issues as the retail anti-theft devices are easily defeated by separating the product from the packaging. Once the packaging is removed it is very easily discarded. That is why empty jewelry cards or tags found in a store are a clear indicator of theft.

Because the Alpha Jewel Lok is tailored for a specific product, the overall effectiveness is increased. Alpha Security designed the Alpha Jewel Lok retail anti theft devices to attach directly onto the product and not to the packaging. This makes it more difficult to steal the jewelry since the Alpha Jewel Lok provides a form of product denial. Without the detachers, it is virtually impossible to defeat the locks. It is more likely that you will destroy the jewelry before you can defeat the Alpha Jewel Lok.

New Technology Solutions To Reduce Shrinkage

theft (11)According to Wikipedia, organized retail crime indicates professional shoplifting, retail crime rings and other organized crime happening in the retail industry.  Organized crime refers to professional thieves that are not taking a pack of gum only, but that consistently visit stores and shoplift hundreds of dollars every time.  The FBI has estimated that the retail industry loses an approximate $30 billion a year due to organized retail crime. Retailers in South Dakota alone estimate that they loose and approximate $95 million a year due to organized shoplifting crime, depriving the state of the sales tax revenue they would otherwise collect and hurting the local economy.

Twelve Reasons Why We Need to Focus on the Fundamentals in 2014

Reflecting back on my humble beginnings in loss prevention, I can still remember the first lesson that I ever learned; a message fundamental to everything that followed. While it may have been shared in different ways or with different words, it was the same message that all of us have heard, still echoed today in companies across the country. In fact, they’re words that most of us have repeated – many times over. But they weren’t words of shrink, or partnerships, or Five Steps. That came with time, and was built upon with experience. The words were more primal, yet far more important. Do you remember?

“There’s nothing in the store that’s worth the risk of anyone getting hurt.”

2013 gave us far too many examples showing just how quickly that message can be lost.

Clearly, the shoplifter is making a bad decision when they make a conscious effort to steal from the store. Those actions have consequences, occasionally much more severe than might be anticipated. But sometimes the cost is much too high. People can get hurt, and lives can change forever. In some cases, lives are lost.

Retailers support tougher shoplifting law

Legislation to help prosecute organized retail crime in South Dakota will be proposed during the 2014 legislative session, which opens Jan. 14.

“This is an issue we’ve seen exploding around the nation, and it’s starting to reach into South Dakota,” said Shawn Lyons, executive director of the South Dakota Retailers Association, which is working with the state attorney general’s office to craft the legislation.

Existing statutes speak only to prosecuting the occasional shoplifter, Lyons said.

“Organized retail crime is not shoplifting,” he said. “It refers to groups, gangs and sometimes individuals engaged in (taking) retail merchandise through theft and fraud in substantial quantities.”

Panasonic Highlights Retail Technology Solutions to Enhance Operations, Reduce Shrinkage and Improve the Customer Experience at NRF2014 Expo

Panasonic System Communications Company of North America, a leading provider of retail business technology solutions, is today demonstrating the integrated retail solutions at NRF 2014 EXPO (booth #1539). Featuring a wide variety of technology solutions designed to help meet the needs of retailers from the sales floor to the back office, delivery truck and everywhere in between, the Panasonic exhibit space demonstrates how rugged enterprise-grade tablets and wireless solutions can connect the retail environment. This connection enables stores to manage much of their technology portfolio, including surveillance systems, digital signage, point of sale and more from one handheld screen.

“As technologies continue to converge onto one network, 2014 will be the year that retailers truly embrace reliable end-to-end technology solutions that will connect data to customers, employees and managers to create not only a best-in-class customer experience, but also improve overall employee productivity, boost sales and reduce shrinkage,” said Ed McCabe, National Sales Manager, Retail, Panasonic System Communications Company of North America. “This convergence will also enable retailers to manage these technologies from a single device – like our family of fully-rugged Toughpad tablet computers.”

Try Something New – Loss Prevention Workshop

You can never be too old to learn something new. Even if all you learn is that you are slowly becoming more out dated and obsolete as time goes by. That is why, professionally, I try to stay on top of the current shoplifting methods by attending a loss prevention workshop.

Even employee theft changes as time goes by. Yes, the basic principles are still there, but attending a loss prevention training refresher course never hurts. The loss prevention seminars will show you what is currently trending with the criminal element. There are high tech ways that people are incurring losses. There are also the same methods being used, just with new twists to try and stay up with the current technologies being used.

Updated training can also show you how to update your security, and your policies to reduce or potentially eliminate the losses your store might be incurring. Remember shoplifting isn’t just about defeating a security tag anymore.

There is a whole new electronic and digital way to sell stolen merchandise, which makes it even more difficult to track down later on. Online shopping is huge and if you do not know how it can affect you and your losses, you might want to reconsider taking a loss prevention workshop soon.

Slow Down – Retail Theft Prevention

What if there was a way to immediately react to and possibly slow down the rate of theft (or stop shoplifting altogether) without having retail theft prevention?

I suggest that everyone invests in Checkpoint systems or a similar form of anti- shoplifting deterrents. Checkpoint systems have an undisputable historical success in reducing theft in retail establishments. However, it does take time to get something installed. During that time, you don’t want to continue to experience the same rate of theft that you have been.

Merchandise only to your rate of sale with your high theft items. If you are only selling two boxes of razors in a week, for example, don’t put out five boxes. You don’t have the sales to support that larger quantity of product being on a shelf. It also gives the thieves access to a larger quantity of product to steal.

If you limit the razors to only two boxes, you might still lose two of them, but you won’t lose five boxes. Thieves will take what they can, especially if it is a small and desirable item. If you give them access to that many of an item, they will take it. If you merchandise only what you will sell in a specific time period, then you will have the merchandise available to your customers, and some extra in the back, just in case you do experience a theft.

You can always re-evaluate your shelf levels after the retail theft prevention package is installed.

Recently Promoted – Loss Prevention Training

One of the best pieces of advice they’ve given at a recent loss prevention training class, is something I have stressed in my own personal career for many years. In this loss prevention workshop, some recently promoted corporate loss prevention professionals spoke of the importance of learning other areas of the company or business outside of just loss prevention. It was a critical factor in their success stories.

They were talking about why it is so important to cross train yourself in different areas of a company or business. It shows your respect for those other areas. It is nearly impossible to try and guide or confer with another department if you don’t have any knowledge of their responsibilities and processes.

It is also important to broaden your horizons because your own working knowledge will make you more successful. The more you know about the full circle of your business, the stronger you are as a manager or a key player, just as these professionals did. The same thing goes for those out there that are going to loss prevention training to broaden their own horizons. The more you know about different areas of a business, the better off you will be.

How can you possibly know what to look for in regards to employee theft, for example, if all you know is selling? How can you be profitable if you don’t know operations? It all comes together with a full circle knowledge that comes from loss prevention seminars.
