Labels or Tags? You Decide (cont.)

The benefits of using RF security labels are that they are easy to use, cost effective and with a plethora of different shapes and sizes, are ideal for many different applications. With the release of Checkpoint’s new EP (enhanced performance) RF label, you are able to receive the same detection capabilities that you would have gotten with a much larger tag in the past. Although the EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance) system is the same, changes in the design of the RF labels have improved the effectiveness of the detection. You can apply these Checkpoint labels to almost any item that you would like to keep from leaving the location without your knowledge. Also, these RF labels will not have to be removed at the time of purchase. When the item is scanned at the point of sale the RF security labels are automatically deactivated, causing a seamless transaction and not adding any time to the routine of your cashier.

There are a few things to remember when applying Checkpoint labels. They are not as durable as RF security tags because they are in sticker form and are not in a hard case. The RF label is also more prone to being tampered with. Also, for the RF labels to be most effective it needs to be placed on a flat surface. If you place the sticker label on a significantly curved surface it can cause the tag to not be detected properly from the EAS system.

These are just a few things to keep in mind when deciding which RF label or Checkpoint security tags will work best to help you stop shoplifting.

Labels or Tags? You Decide

Need help deciding which Checkpoint Labels you should use to help stop shoplifting? Here are a few things to think about from a Checkpoint security system certified technician’s point of view. The first decision you will need to make is whether you need reusable RF security tags or one time use RF security labels.

Checkpoint security tags have greater detection from a further distance than an RF label. This does not mean that you must have RF security tags for your system to work properly. A Checkpoint system is configured and tuned to detect RF labels from antenna to antenna without losing detection. One of the primary reasons for having Checkpoint security tags is that they are a visual deterrent. When a customer is browsing the merchandise, whether it is a pair of jeans or a nice purse, they will see the tag and know that if they try to steal the item an alarm will sound. Having RF security tags alone will help to stop shoplifting. The other benefits of using these tags are that they are more durable than RF security labels and are reusable.

The downside of using Checkpoint security tags is the same as one of the benefits they are easy to see. While it will help to stop shoplifting, it could also not be as aesthetically pleasing as some companies would prefer. There are also some products that it is not logical or cost effective to use RF security tags on. These items would be better suited for a RF label.

RF security tags. The latest in theft prevention.

RF security tags, also known as RF labels, are sensor tags designed to be placed on product in order to sound an alarm if someone attempts to steal the product they are placed on.  These tags work on a a radio frequency that is designed cut down on the annoying false alarms of the past.  A leader in RF label technology is Checkpoint systems.  With the new Checkpoint security tags in place you don’t have to worry about cell phones and keyless entry setting off your alarms and bothering your customers.  That is of course assuming you deactivate your own product first.

Did you know the majority of false alarms from RF security labels are due to user error?  A common misconception is that if the door alarm goes off then the “customer” must be trying to steal.  In fact, that is rarely the case.  In most cases the real thief takes one look at Checkpoint security tags and tries his/her luck elsewhere.  In general the cashier forgets to remove or deactivate the RF label and the good customer accidently sets the system off.  This is one of the reasons that employee response is so important.  It is a direct reflection of the stores customer service skills and your company.

The second reason to respond is the deterrent effect.  What makes thieves wary of Checkpoint labels is that they know, or should know, that it will bring them unwanted attention.  If they see your cashier waving customer on or not even looking up then you set up RF security tags for nothing.

There is never a substitute for alert employees, but when properly used, the Checkpoint security tags can make a large impact in helping you stop shoplifting.

Are All RF Labels Created Equal?

The short answer is “No” all RF labels are not created equally. Like anything else you get what you pay for. I have found this to be true not because I am a loss prevention professional, but because of what our customers tell us. We get new customers every week that tell us that the RF labels they have been purchasing  fall off their merchandise, do not trigger the system at the front door and simply do not work.

Most of these labels are manufactured in overseas factories that have tried to copy genuine Checkpoint security tags.  They do not have the quality control that Checkpoint has. OK, they are cheaper. But if you are going to take the time to tag your merchandise in an effort to stop shoplifting which costs you labor dollars not to mention the cost of the labels themselves wouldn’t you want them to work?

I have seen so many of these cheap RF security labels that are really not worth the paper they were printed on fail that it make you wonder. These companies use adhesive that is poor quality and dries out quickly. The RF label falls then off your merchandise or is easily peeled off. The shoplifters know this also.

If you want to be serious about your efforts to stop shoplifting you have to use serious RF security labels! If you would like free samples of Checkpoint labels contact us today.
