Reducing Losses with Checkpoint Labels

With a tough economy, retailers are looking for ways to stop shoplifting without sinking all of their profits into the effort. Shoplifting takes away from our profits and is a frustrating cost of doing business. It is not a cost that you have to suffer without being able to do something to reduce it.

Checkpoint security tags and RF labels can go far to help reduce shoplifting in your business. Both can be affixed to your high theft merchandise, and an alarm will sound if the merchandise goes near your doors without being purchased. Knowing that this is a possibility can deter many shoplifters that do not want to take the chance of drawing unwanted attention.

RF security labels work on a radio frequency in order to alert your employees. They are deactivated at your registers when purchased in order to prevent false alarms. Your employees are trained to react to the alarms appropriately, as well as how to deactivate them properly at your registers. The RF label is a simple yet effective way to help stop shoplifting within your business, convincing shoplifters that yours is not a business to steal from.

Checkpoint labels are an industry leader in the loss prevention world and along with their reputation is the knowledge that you are doing something to help stop shoplifting in your business. RF labels can help get you on the right track to increasing the profits and reducing the loss. These along with a good loss prevention program, excellent customer service, and well trained employees can keep your business competitive for years to come.

RF Security Tags … An industry staple for a reason.

RF security tags have been around for years.  You probably are more familiar with the common name of sensor tags.  In reality the “sensor tag” is operated on a Radio Frequency, hence the technical name of RF security tags or RF security labels.  While many aspects of retail have changed over the years the one that has remained constant is theft.  Additionally, RF security tags and RF security labels continue to be the best way to stop shoplifting in you store.

There are many different type of retailers in the market today.  As business leaders you know that there are no cookie cutter solutions to individual business problems.  For this reason I suggest looking into Checkpoint security tags and Checkpoint labels for you business.  Checkpoint recognizes that every business is different and they have a large variety of Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint security tags that can be used to custom fit a solution for your business.

There is a key difference between RF labels and RF tags that you need to know when looking to stop shoplifting in your store.  A RF label is what is commonly referred to as a “soft” tag.  It is an adhesive tag that sticks the box or package.  RF security tags are what we consider “hard” tags that attach with a pin or clamp to merchandise and require a deactivator to physically remove the tag before the product can be used.  It is important that take a hard look at the type of product needing to be protected and work with your Checkpoint representative to pick the right RF label or tag for your specific needs.

RF security tags. More than your daddy’s old sensor tags.

For those who have been around retail for awhile, you have probably seen many different versions of sensor tags.  I remember, when as a consumer, I first started seeing retailers use sensor tags to stop shoplifting.  The systems would alarm at anything electronic.  Beepers, early cell phones and remote entry key fobs were all notorious for setting off the alarm as opposed to product.  That is not the case with Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint security tags.

Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint security tags are considered RF labels and RF security tags since the work on a Radio Frequency.  When you get your EAS system set up a technician will calibrate your system so that the door pedestals will pick up the specific frequency of your RF security labels and your RF security tags as opposed to all of those other items in the area.  So what does this mean for business owners?

One of the biggest positives to using RF security labels is actually customer service.  A) You increase customer service when you stop shoplifting and have the product your customers want available and ready to sell.  B) You increase customer service by significantly reducing false alarms.  With the old systems you never knew who was stealing and everyone was a suspect.  Now with the RF label you know the person setting off the system has product with a live tag.  Now they may be stealing or the cashier may have forgotten to remove or deactivate the RF label or tag, but you eliminate the false alarms due to electronics and other devices.  This equals the ability to still stop shoplifting and decreases the chance for a negative Customer Service situation.  Now aren’t you glad for modern technology?

Stop Shoplifting with RF Labels

RF security labels are an option that businesses can consider when they are brainstorming on ways to stop shoplifting.  Checkpoint security tags, such as an RF label, sound an alarm if someone attempts to steal the merchandise upon which the labels are attached.  This alerts store employees that a possible theft is occurring.

There are thousands of options out there, but Checkpoint labels have a proven reputation.  RF security tags attach easily to your high theft merchandise, and provide a visual deterrent to the customer considering shoplifting from your store.  And if the visual deterrent is not enough, the risk of drawing attention to themselves by setting off a store alarm can be just as convincing.  Shoplifters thrive on not gaining attention, so RF security tags can provide that unwanted attention just by being present on the merchandise you sell.

RF labels, which utilizes radio frequency in order to alert employees that merchandise is leaving the store, is a reliable way to protect your merchandise and help stop shoplifting within your business.  Unprotected businesses can merchandise well and train employees to prevent theft, but with the added protection of RF security labels, your profits will increase while your theft decreases.

By having RF labels, you are telling the shoplifters to move on to another business.  You are telling the shoplifter that you take loss prevention seriously and will not tolerate the impact shoplifting has on your business.  Checkpoint labels are a proven industry leader in loss prevention solutions, and for minimal investment your business can experience the profitability and shrink reduction effects of RF technology.

If You Don’t Tag, You’re It

While the use of RF security tags is widespread in major retail stores, only a handful of smaller, locally owned retailers have an EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance) system. The primary concern for small businesses is, of course, the upfront cost of the system. While EAS systems are not “cheap” neither is the amount of loss a retailer will see if they do not stop shoplifting from occurring.

The average retailer has a profit margin of only 2% once you include the cost for the product, labor, utilities and lease payment. This means that if a shoplifter steals one item that costs $30 the retailer would have to sell $1500 to recoup the money that was lost from one item being stolen. In all my experience, I have never met a retailer that could not recoup the cost of a Checkpoint system within the first year that the system was installed.

Checkpoint security tags and RF labels are easy to apply and become a part of your employee’s daily routine. You can attach Checkpoint labels and RF security tags to virtually any product or item that you do not want leaving your store. These items are not just for giant one-stop-shop stores but are for every store that decides that they want to stop shoplifting from erasing their profits. You might think that it costs a little more up front but if you run the numbers, an EAS system always wins.

Efforts to Stop Shoplifting Get a Boost With RF Security Labels

Shoplifting becomes more than a nuisance when it has a serious impact on the bottom line and calls for serious efforts to stop shoplifting by the shop ownership.

Shoplifting is so expected among retailers that it affects everything in the retail world from store design to merchandising to number of staff and the number of work hours scheduled.  Shoplifting is even a budgeted item (inventory reserve) because everyone in the business knows that retail theft is a given.

Retail anti theft devices (example: Checkpoint security tags and Checkpoint security labels) of varying degrees have been found to have a positive impact on the rate of inventory loss for the retailer and proven to be cost effective as a means to stop shoplifting.

Technology has played a great part in the improvement of retail anti theft devices, from closed circuit television to electronic surveillance that detects merchandise protected by Checkpoint tags and Checkpoint security labels as it leaves a store or department without being purchased.

Checkpoint Systems manufactures anti theft solutions for almost any application or budget.  Once only affordable by the largest retailers, there are now Checkpoint systems that pay a quick return on investment for any size store or boutique.  Checkpoint RF tags and Checkpoint RF security labels are designed to be used on merchandise of unlimited size and shape.  Boxes, soft goods, bottles, whatever needs protecting, Checkpoint systems, RF security tags and RF security labels are made to improve the retailer’s profit margin by preventing the potential profit to walk out the door courtesy of the five finger discount.

Some retailers restrict their effort to high theft/high value items by applying Checkpoint labels and RF security tags to such as baby formula or leather goods.  The storeowner or manager is the best judge of how to use his assets to stop shoplifting, including RF security tags and RF security labels made by Checkpoint Systems.

Reasonable Measures Taken Using RF Labels

Reasonable measures to stop shoplifting are those that will give a retailer a return on his investment and stop his profits from walking out the door, like using RF security labels and RF security tags on merchandise that is vulnerable to customer theft.

Every retailer experiences inventory shrink; it is a retail business fact of life.  The trick is to balance economic preventive measures with acceptable merchandising methods.

In some high crime areas, customers expect and understand merchandise that is under lock and key or behind glass.  In others, such means to protect merchandise would be over the top and turn shoppers off, as they expect to be able to handle and inspect the goods, as they are able to do with merchandise protected by Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint security tags.

One of the less obtrusive retail electronic devices designed to stop shoplifting is the Checkpoint Security System.  The system stands quietly at the entrance until it is needed.  When it detects active RF security tags or RF security labels on clothing or other merchandise that leaving the store unpaid, it alerts store personnel with an audible alarm.

The Checkpoint security tags and RF labels come in a variety of shapes and sizes for almost any application or type of merchandise.  Your and your employees’ eyes can’t be on every shopper all the time, but a Checkpoint Security System is always on.

The return on investment of a Checkpoint Security System using RF labels or RF tags is remarkably fast.  Not only will it alert staff to unsold merchandise going out the door, but also the prevention factor alone is a value in itself.

The greater the risk of being caught, the greater the chance that a shoplifter will avoid a protected store and go to an easier target.

Checkpoint Systems with RF security labels and RF security tags can greatly enhance your efforts to control or stop shoplifting at your business.

The evolution of Checkpoint security tags.

I remember when I first started working in Loss Prevention.  The company I worked for used Checkpoint security tags.  It was a hardlines retailer so we primarily used the “soft” Checkpoint labels.  These were stickers with a barcode printed on them so they looked like a product UPC.  In fact, on the bottom of the sticker was the Radio Frequency lining that made these RF security labels sound the door alarms when the product was stolen.

These are great and can still be used today.  In addition, there are many other RF security labels and RF security tags than can be used to accomplish the same task, which is to stop shoplifting.  In addition, to the standard sticker RF labels, you can now get Checkpoint labels that are built into the hang tags of your merchandise.  The RF label is actually built inside of the tag and most shoplifters don’t even know.  You can also get Checkpoint labels that are sewn into the clothes themselves if you work in softlines.

Most softline retailers rely on hard RF security tags.  For this you can still get a variety of Checkpoint security tags.  There are now a half dozen different sizes and shapes for RF security tags so you can find the right tag for each different type of product.  You can also get Checkpoint security tags that have ink inside that “pop” if a shoplifter tries to remove the tag without the proper device.

It has always been a challenge to stop shoplifting, but RF security tags and RF security labels have come a long way to help with this struggle.

This Just In: The World is Not Square

Come to find out, the world is indeed round. Not only is this great big planet we live in not square but also the majority of items in this world are also not square.

While the notion that you were not aware that the earth is round is ridiculous, what you might not know is that not all RF labels are square.

Several years ago the people at Checkpoint had a brilliant revelation that not all the products being tagged had squared off edges. Since this flash of genius these folks have created a plethora of different Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint Security Tags to help retailers tag items that don’t fit the generic inch and a half square mold.

In my personal opinion, the best RF label they have is a round label that is about an inch in diameter. This RF label can be applied to the bottom of medicine bottles, almost anything in health and beauty care or any other item that might have caused an issue with standard RF security labels. Not to mention that in a lot of cases it is also more aesthetically pleasing.

For the retailer looking for a more sleek and sexy design, Checkpoint labels also offer a clear polyurethane label that can be placed directly over a barcode. This allows you to place RF security labels on items without having to cover up any instructions or ingredients that are listed on the packaging.

These are just a couple of the many different RF security tags that are offered to help you stop shoplifting from occurring in your business.

Checkpoint RF Security Tags and RF Security Labels for Merchandise Protection

There is no one in a better position to make decisions the use of RF security tags and RF security labels than the business owner himself.  Of course the decision should not be made without a thorough analysis of the factors that contribute to the inventory shrinkage problem and gaining all the input he can possibly get.

The shoplifting problem may be obvious.  The owner/manager may receive reports from customers or employees that have witnessed customer theft.  Merchandise may mysteriously disappear from display.  Empty packages and price tags may be found hidden around the store. There are any number of signs that may point to a big shoplifting problem. The most serious problem is inventory loss that translates into lost profits.

One of the most effective solutions to stop shoplifting comes from Checkpoint Security Systems.  The use of pedestals from Checkpoint Systems, along with Checkpoint RF security tags and Checkpoint RF security labels will not only alert store personnel when an item that has not been paid for is leaving the store or department, but will deter most shoplifters from even attempting to steal from the store.

Pedestals from Checkpoint Security Systems can detect merchandise of all kinds, large or small.  There are Checkpoint security tags designed to protect everything from eyewear to shoes to golf clubs.  Checkpoint RF security labels are used to safeguard groceries, boxes, packages, and certain types of apparel.   Almost any style or category of high theft merchandise can be protected by RF security tags or labels from Checkpoint Security Systems.

No matter the size of the business, a Checkpoint Security System and the use of RF security tags and Checkpoint labels will be cost effective because the profit gained from the sale of merchandise that would have otherwise been stolen will quickly cover the cost of the system.
