Simple Needs – Prevent Shoplifting

With all of the retail anti-theft devices on the market, it can be confusing and overwhelming to try and figure out what is the most useful for your shop. Just look at the Alpha Security line or retail anti-theft devices. There are more products than I can count and each one has its own special purpose.

Alpha Security designed their products with both Alpha 2 Alarm and Alpha 3 Alarm capabilities.

You can probably figure out which Alpha Security product you need to prevent shoplifting just by matching them up with the inventory item you are trying to protect. That’s the easy part to prevent shoplifting. Now it is time to figure out if you need an Alpha 2 Alarm or an Alpha 3 Alarm.

An Alpha 2 Alarm product will only activate if tampered with and the door alarms will sound if not deactivated. That is good for products where someone tries to take merchandise out of the box/ packaging to steal it, like electronics or power tools.

For an item like a high theft, expensive handbag you might want to use the Alpha 3 Alarm. This alarm will activate not only if the tag is tampered with, but will also provide an audible directly from the tag if the handbag is removed from the store without being deactivated. It is handy if the bag is concealed as the method of theft.

The Best Accessory for Your Accessories – Alpha 2 Alarm

The Alpha 2 Alarm lanyard is a retail anti-theft device comprised of a small block (only a few inches long) that has a wire lanyard permanently attached at one end. The wire is a heavy-duty wire that prevents it from easily being cut. In order to protect your merchandise, the cable wire is covered in a protective coating. This makes sure the wire does not snag on any fabrics or decorative embellishments.

The other end of the wire remains loose until it is attached to the merchandise. Then the loose end is inserted into the block. There is a push button release for easy removal with a detacher at your POS.

Even though this is one of the best uses for this particular type of EAS alarm, the Alpha Security Alpha 2 Alarm lanyard lock is for more than just purses. This is a versatile type of retail anti-theft device that can prevent shoplifting of a wide variety of accessories. The lanyards are large enough to work with large totes and handbags. They are not so big that they would not work for the smaller wristlets that are in fashion right now. The lanyard can also be used for other suitcases and luggage.

Are we talking about Chili – Alpha 3 Alarm

I would like to feel that I am pretty savvy when it comes to technology. There isn’t much that I can’t do or figure out. I am baffled when it comes to what exactly are the Alpha Security Alpha 2 Alarm and Alpha 3 Alarm retail anti theft devices.

I know this isn’t like a 3-alarm fire or a good bowl of 3-alarm chili. It did take me a bit to realize that Alpha Security has come up with different levels of protection against in store theft.

The most basic level is the typical EAS system.  A product has a tag that alarms when the tag passes through the field generated by two towers at an exit door. We see that in just about every big box retailer out there.

That is a good start, but what if you are trying to prevent shoplifting by more experienced shoplifters? Your retail anti theft devices need to step it up a notch. This is where the Alpha 2 Alarm comes in. That is an alarm that comes directly from the retail anti theft device if it is tampered with.

Now if you still need more protection look for the Alpha 3 Alarm. It has the alarm capabilities of both levels one and two. But the biggest difference is that an Alpha 3 Alarm will sound if the retail anti theft device (and the product) leaves the store without being paid for. The alarm will continue to go off for up to ten minutes allowing you time to find where the shoplifter has inevitably discarded the merchandise.

Something For Everyone – Alpha 2 Alarm

When I think about EAS alarms I have images of hard plastic tags sticking off of clothing and accessories. These are the tags that set off the alarms at the doors at the big retail shops that need them to prevent shoplifting. What doesn’t come to mind is liquor stores having the same retail anti theft devices and security in their stores.

Obviously the little plastic tags and pins are completely ineffective on a glass liquor or wine bottle. It used to be a shame that these hardworking shop owners were left with minimal protection to prevent shoplifting. As a small business owner with limited resources, there is no room for error or for the margin loss incurred by the theft of even one bottle.

Alpha Security changed all of that. They created a line of retail anti theft devices designed specifically for liquor and wine bottles. Alpha Security has a line of bottle locks that range from small clear caps to steel bands all embedded with EAS tags. Some of them even boast the alarms (like their Alpha 2 Alarm) hidden inside.

The Alpha 2 Alarm bottle locks will sound at the exit doors, as well as sounding inside the store of the Alpha 2 alarm is tampered with.

What Level Is For You? – Alpha 3 Alarm

I know that there are different EAS tags and devices out there, but when I first started researching products, I didn’t know what exactly is the difference between the Alpha Security Alpha 2 Alarm and the Alpha 3 Alarm retail anti theft devices.

It didn’t take me long to realize that Alpha Security had created different levels of protection against in store theft.

The most basic level is the typical EAS system.  A product has a tag that alarms when the tag passes through the field generated by two towers at an exit door. We see this format in just about every big box retailer out there.

But what if you are trying to prevent shoplifting by more experienced shoplifters? This is where the need for Alpha 2 Alarm occurs. This device has an audible alarm that comes directly from the retail anti theft device if it is tampered with. So not only does the EAS device sound off at the door if it is not deactivated, but it also sounds if it is tampered with inside the store.

Now if you are still looking for the big daddy of alarms, use the Alpha 3 Alarm. It has the alarm capabilities of both levels one and two. But the biggest difference is that an Alpha 3 Alarm will sound if the retail anti theft device (and the product) leaves the store without being paid for. So the screech of the alarm will not stop at the doors. It wills stay with the EAS device – and more importantly the product. This makes the shoplifter even more conspicuous than what they want to be.

In a nutshell, the alarms signal the level of protection in preventing shoplifting.

Going over the top with Retail Anti-Theft Devices

The other day I was walking through a retail sporting goods store when I came across a display of football jerseys.  I had to stop and consider the display, not because I liked the team, or the colors, or even the price offered, but because of how ridiculous the jerseys looked while being festooned with four retail anti-theft devices EACH!

Each piece of clothing had an Alpha 3 Alarm, an Alpha 2 Alarm, an Alpha Fashion2 hard tag, and an Alpha Shark Tag attached at various points of the garment.  Just by looking at them I could tell it would be nearly impossible for any customer to try on any of the jerseys without being bludgeoned into a coma by the amount of devices.

I believe that if you have that many retail anti-theft devices on a piece of clothing you might have a few issues in your company.  First of all, you need to look at moving your store out of that neighborhood if the need to prevent shoplifting is THAT severe.  Secondly, your Loss Prevention or merchandising team has no idea how to properly attach devices to product.  Or, finally, you just have too many excess devices and no reasonable idea what to do with them.

Here’s some advice; research each anti-theft device BEFORE ordering it.  That way you will know what can fit your company needs so your customers can try on the clothing and find out what fits them.

Retail Anti-Theft Devices and Correct Application

In my years of working in loss prevention I have seen some ridiculous misuses of company resources.  Most of the time it involves company employees pulling dangerous or inane stunts with equipment that they think is funny.  I have seen people riding pallet jacks like skateboards and driving scissor lifts through coffee shop drive-thrus. While such things fall within our realm of responsibility as liability issues they are actually not the worst misuse of equipment we come across.

I am speaking specifically about incorrect or improper application of retail anti -theft devices.  I have seen retail anti-theft devices ineffectively attached to items (like putting cable locks on detachable or unsecured appendages), overused (putting a 2 Alarm AND Spider Wrap onto the same piece of product), or completely unused (EAS tags left in boxes instead of put on product).

If you are trying to prevent shoplifting then you need to be mindful of how to correctly implement your anti-theft devices in order to protect your assets and also make sure you aren’t wasting your time and money in the long run.

Our Shoes were Walking out the Door!

In one of my stores there is a problem that isn’t exactly unique to them but is somewhat of an epidemic.  They are constantly losing shoes to theft.

In their efforts to prevent shoplifting in their store they have tried every way possible to battle this issue, but in spite of their efforts their total shrink in that department is astounding.  They have done everything from ensuring one hundred percent tagging standards to twenty-four hour surveillance of the area, but still they get beat.

The problem seems to be that the retail anti-theft devices they were using had been beaten and the local thieves seem to have spread the word on the methods to do it.

After researching the problem we have come up with a somewhat unorthodox use for a different type of retail anti-theft device which so far has seemed to confound the culprits.  Now the department is required to use 2 Alarm locks on all footwear in the store, specifically running the cable through the eye-loops of the footwear itself or attaching it to a structurally sound part of the item.  Also, if possible, they are to run the 2 Alarm units through BOTH pieces of footwear, thereby ensuring that the pair is kept intact and should anyone attempt to defeat the 2 Alarm piece it will simply sound off alerting associates to possible purloining of product.

What’s the point is using Anti-Theft Devices if you don’t use them correctly?

The other day I was out shopping with my wife at one of her favorite retail clothing stores.  It is one of those places that offers bargains and sale prices on big name items in the fashion community and has on hand everything from shoes, perfumes, clothes, handbags, and even cookware.  As I was staring off into oblivion (as I am unable to maintain interest in a store that offers nothing to those of us with a Y chromosome) I noticed something that actually roused me from my self-induced stupor.

It was as we were walking through the part of the store where they kept the handbags.  The bags are on racks and hang by their straps to save space and provide ease of access and, upon inspection I noticed the majority of them had Alpha 2 Alarm tags affixed to them.  In and of itself, the application of Alpha 2 Alarm tags, or ANY retail anti-theft device on designer handbags was nothing special.  Rather, it was HOW the Alpha 2 Alarm tags had been affixed that caught my eye.

On almost every bag I came across, the Alpha 2 Alarm tags had been placed on the most ineffectual part of the bag possible.  Rather than thread a heavy ring or loop of any of the bags, the tags had been secured AROUND the straps themselves.  This meant that anyone wishing to remove them would only need to unlatch one side of the adjustable strap and simply slide the tag right off the purse.

I doubt it had been intentional but it was so blatant I had to tell the store management about the oversight.  There’s no point having retail anti -theft devices if they aren’t going to be used effectively.

Are your Keys Safe?

Every type of security device is removed in one of two methods: the legitimate way using a corresponding removal key, and the illegitimate way which usually involves a pair of pliers or bolt-cutters.  Savvy shoplifters know how to identify the legitimate tools and always look for opportunities to get their hands on them.

I’ve seen some companies secure the tools right to the cash wrap and others require their employees to carry them on their person or stash them in a register.  For stores using Spider Wraps, 3 Alarm, or 2 Alarm retail anti theft devices only the last two methods are plausible as it would prove impossible to remove a Spider Wrap with a tool that was welded to a counter.  In my experience, the best way to ensure the convenient removal of your Spider Wraps is to make it impossible for your tools to wander.  Obviously there is no sure-fire practice as every store operates differently, but I am basing my suggestion on a fairly ‘textbook’ store setup.

In most stores there is usually a space (or cubby-hole if you prefer) somewhere directly beneath or nearby the register.  Installing a small storage space, similar to a hide-a-key on the underside of the space provides you with a discreet area to protect your removal tools from sticky fingers while also keeping them in an area your employees will remember since it will be so unique.
