In Good Conscience – Wardrobing Tags

When a customer buys an item of clothing that they have every intention of wearing to an event and then return it, it is called wardrobing.
This is a different action (and intention) than a customer who buys an item and tries it on at home, instead of in a dressing room at the store. The customer might still return the item, but they have not worn it to an event or for an extended period of time.
In the first scenario, the retailer is left with used product and cannot, in good conscience, sell the item for full price. To counteract this practice, retailers are more frequently using Alpha Shark Tags or a similar type of wardrobing tags.
The Alpha Shark Tag specifically is a red plastic tag that is attached with a pin closure. The pin clamps onto the merchandise. To be truly effective, the tags should be someplace conspicuous, such as the middle of the neckline on a dress or shirt. The tags are able to hold a small card or slip of paper that describes the return policy and the recommended removal method of these wardrobing tags.
The tags are easily removed with household scissors. However, they should only be removed once the customer is sure they are going to keep the item. This is how the retailer safeguards that this item has not been worn and can therefore be returned per company policies without having to question or second-guess the customer.

Get It Clean- Anti Theft Devices

On a recent shopping trip, I ended up leaving a store without making a purchase. It wasn’t because I didn’t want to spend money; it was because I couldn’t find anything in their messy store. This wasn’t so much an issue of employee engagement or merchandise recovery practices. It was about anti shoplifting practices being nonexistent.
Because this particular store had been completely ransacked in their jewelry department. It was almost impossible to find what I needed. There were earrings missing, or lying on the ground in complete disarray. Without the threat of anti theft devices, shoplifters were tearing the jewelry department up. They knew they could get away with whatever they wanted.
It was frustrating as a customer to not be able to find what I needed quickly. It was even more frustrating having worked with anti theft devices before. I know that the simple addition of cheap tags and cheap labels could have prevented some of this mess.
When shoplifters are not intimidated in a store, they will ransack whatever they feel like. This is why there was such a mess. It was the aftermath of multiple shoplifters. Having anti shoplifting tools will reduce the scope of the shoplifters mess and will leave the area easier to shop by actual paying customers. Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase Anti-Shoplifting devices and your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system from Checkpoint Systems to stop shoplifting in your store.

Commercially Driven- Liquor Bottle Security

Why do people steal bottles of alcohol? Why would someone try and defeat your liquor bottle security and risk getting caught just for a few bottles? The answer lies within the end result of the theft.
For some, it is an economic answer to an addiction. These are people who have substance abuse issues and steal to feed that addiction.
For others, the answer is that the theft is commercially driven. As you know, alcohol is expensive. Bottles can fetch a high price just in a liquor store, and an even bigger price when sold at a bar or nightclub setting.
If you have low liquor bottle security, you might be even more prone to commercially driven theft. That is theft that has a profit at the end. Stolen merchandise is sold in a variety of venues. Prestigious bottles can be sold online. Some businesses operate by reselling stolen goods, funneling this dirty money elsewhere. Bottles can even be sold from person to person.
To avoid this, Alpha Security makes a variety of bottle locks that can act as a strong deterrent against these commercially driven thefts. EASy Bottle locks not only deter the theft initially, but they also reduce the likelihood of a resale. It is much harder to sell an item on the street if the buyer cannot open the bottle.
Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase EASy Bottle bottle locks by Alpha Security and your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system.

Fit The Shoes- Clothing Security

Using the Alpha Security Mini CableLok instead of checkpoint tags offers more range for your clothing security. The Mini CableLok is a small 3” aircraft grade cable with an isolated sound chamber. The cable can be looped through straps or decorations that would secure the lock. By increasing the range of merchandise that can now be secured, to makes it harder for a shoplifter or an employee to sneak out the door.
Shoes always pose a problem for clothing security tags. The two biggest losses in the shoe department are inventory shrink losses from shoplifters or employees.
These theft losses are pretty straightforward. Often a shoplifter will come into the store with an old pair of shoes and try on a new pair. They put their old pair in the box and walk out with the new pair.
An employee might do the same, or they will be more likely to pass off the shoes at the point of sale to a friend or relative.
Using clothing security only partially solves each of these problems. Since the pin system only works when there is an eye to thread the stickpin through, many shoes cannot be tagged.
Strappy heels, dress shoes and sandals are prime examples. Without clothing security, it is just that much easier for a shoplifter to walk out the door unnoticed.

A Little Help From My Friends- Employee Theft Investigation

Employee theft is not always about just one employee working alone, as we might be prone to suspecting. All too often we find after we start digging into an employee theft investigation that there are multiple employees that work together to commit their crimes. Sometimes it is even an employee working with a vendor.
It is not uncommon for an employee who is in charge of receiving merchandise deliveries to be approached by the vendor to steal product. A common scheme is for the vendor to work with an employee. When the vendor show up with a merchandise delivery, the employee does not verify that all of the merchandise comes off the truck and enters the store.  That creates an overage on this vendor’s delivery truck, and leaves you with an inventory shortage.
From there, the merchandise is sold through various channels for cash or other goods. The vendor will then give the employee a share of those profits, compensating them for their role in the employee theft.
A variation is that all of the merchandise will actually come off the truck- to appease anyone watching, or any video that might be recording. From there, the employee might stash the merchandise in a trashcan, or in a box and take it outside for the vendor to pick up.
Either way, the employee theft has occurred and it is hard to trace since the invoices have been signed off as a full receipt of product.

Return to Sender- Checkpoint Systems

Our store uses Checkpoint systems for anti shoplifting. This helps to alleviate most of the criminal element from coming into the store to start with. Next, these same tools that we use to stop shoplifting help clue us in when someone tries a fraudulent refund. They come to the cashier and try to refund merchandise that still has the Checkpoint systems tags still attached, and no receipt.
Other stores that I know of do not use retail theft prevention devices for anti shoplifting. Since the theft of the merchandise was so easy, the store was viewed as an easy refund target within the community. They also did not have any sort of policy in place regarding refunds that did not have a receipt. As a result, refunders on almost a daily basis targeted them.
We started a policy of allowing customers three no receipted refunds within a six-month period before we declined the return. That gave the legitimate shopper an opportunity to return items that a receipt was lost, or they received the items as a gift.
The end result was that we were able to make accommodations to satisfy (instead of alienating) our customer base (usually the ones who did not return merchandise with retail theft prevention tags). For those that abused the refunds, we were able to capture data on who was doing the returns (asking for a picture ID) and track their movements and develop shoplifting cases accordingly on those suspects.

The Employee Break Room.- Alpha Nano Gate

Just because the Alpha Nano Gate by Alpha Security was designed for anti shoplifting, doesn’t mean it can’t be the perfect solution to thwart employee theft.
One area where retail anti theft devices fail to prevent employee theft is the employee break room. Due to privacy concerns, cameras are often not allowed (by law) in some of these areas.
That makes it a prime place for an ingenious employee to ferret away product. They can hide merchandise and take advantage of moments of quiet to remove devises designed to prevent shoplifting. Afterwards, it is just a short trip into the employees bag or coat and the merchandise will be walked out without ever raising a suspicion.
One of the biggest advantages of using Alpha Nano Gate compared to other devices is its relatively small design. That makes it the perfect gatekeeper for areas that have limited space to put larger EAS/ RF pedestals. By installing Alpha Nano Gate outside of an employee break room or office; you can prevent another avenue for employee theft. The gate will deter employees from entering these areas with unpaid for merchandise.

It Is A Small, Small World – Pre Employment Screening

Once upon a time, I had an employee. He was very good at certain aspects of his job. However, he was prone to drama in his life. Anytime the drama struck, his job performance would falter. Since his pre-employment screening did not show his weakness for personal drama, we hired him based solely on his job application.

Fast forward many years later. My husband received an application for one of his stores. The applicant seemed qualified on paper, so my husband had a phone interview with him. It was only after asking some questions, did it come out that this applicant may have worked under one of my friends supervision at a previous job.

When my husband asked me if she might know him, I actually said yes, and that I was also one of his previous supervisors. It’s a small retail world after all. Well, even though I knew I could not say much about his personal downfalls, I could speak to the position he held at my place of employment.

My friend also confirmed his position with her company. The interesting thing was that this applicant worked in a very different capacity than the job he was applying for.

This, unfortunately, is not uncommon; an applicant omitting details of their work history to seem like they have more relevant experience than what they really do. It was only by chance that my husband asked the right questions to get more information. Had he only relied on the information provided on the application, his pre employment screening would not have given him the information he needed to make an informed decision.

Clothes Make The Man – Clothing Alarm

If your store really does have great customer service, you might not need clothing security tags. The service level will discourage shoplifters from attempting to steal inside your place of business. That being said, it really won’t matter if you have security tags on your clothes, if your employees decide not to give everyone that superior service level.

Take a shoplifting incident we had. A well-dressed man came into the store. He greeted and waved hello to all of the employees he came across. Because he was so outgoing and friendly, the employees completely disregarded him and ultimately did not provide any customer service.

When the clothing alarm went off the employees saw this man walking out the door with his arms piled full of clothes that had not been paid for. Can you imagine their shock and disbelief at what happened? It was in their hesitation that this man made a clean get-away.

Had the merchandise not had clothing security tags, they never would have even noticed. There would not have been a clothing alarm that made them look up to see what was going on. This is a situation where the perpetrator was going to steal regardless of how much clothing security there was. The only thing that would have stopped him was an employee actually giving excellent customer service.

Show ‘Em What You’ve Got- Anti Theft Devices

When faced with additional obstacles to get the product out the door with out being caught, most of these non-professional shoplifters will either abandon the thought of stealing, or they will go someplace else to steal their goods.
Anti shoplifting tools provide the visual deterrent needed to do just that- prevent retail theft.
For some, it might seem counterproductive to give away your secrets as to what kinds of security you use to prevent retail theft. In reality, it is quite the opposite. You see, when someone is looking to steal, they are going to look for the path of least resistance.
If they do not see any anti theft devices, they assume the path is clear of any type of resistance. This makes a store a bigger target, or a product more likely to be stolen. When you start to prevent retail theft by using anti theft devices you are showing the potential thieves what they are up against in order to steal successfully.
