Identify Your Stock – Checkpoint Labels

For many general merchandise businesses, health and beauty products are often a high theft item. These items can be taken for personal use. However, if you are missing large quantities (in particular all at once) then you are probably looking at a resale situation. Your anti shoplifting programs need to be able to identify and address this issue.
Shoplifters will steal an item in mass quantities (the entire shelf has been swiped clean of all of it’s merchandise) and find a place to re sell them for profit. This can be a pawnshop, ebay, or another local Mom and Pop store looking for a better profit margin.
Using Checkpoint Systems for retail theft prevention is an overall good solution to stop shoplifting.
Specifically, Checkpoint labels can be adhered to almost every box or package. They can also be pre printed with your own message.
Think about having Checkpoint labels printed with a message stating that this is an anti shoplifting label, if found for resale please call your store’s number. Then add your store’s name and phone number.
This will help identify stolen product as being yours. Additionally, this retail theft prevention identifies the item as being monitored, deterring theft to begin with. Lastly, any other business that might be interested in buying the stolen items will be hesitant, as they know they cannot sell the item out of their shop with that kind of label affixed to it.

Slightly Different Than The Others- Retail Anti Shoplifting Devices

It is important for retailers to understand the role Alpha Security Alpha Shark Tags play to prevent shoplifting. It is also important for retailers to understand that these tags are actually not retail anti theft devices like we normally think of them.
Alpha Shark Tags prevent a form of return fraud called wardrobing. They are meant to be left on after the point of purchase and the customer is instructed how to remove them at home. Only after a customer is sure that they want to keep the items should they remove the tags. They may be rejected for a return if the tag removed.
These tags do the exact opposite of an EAS tag. The Alpha Shark Tags are not imbedded with an alarm. There is no early warning system if the tag is tampered with. In fact, these tags are to be removed by someone other than a store employee, where as an EAS tag is specifically designed to be removed only by an employee.  Unlike EAS tags, which are meant to be tamper resistant, a customer can easily cut the wardrobing tags off with a pair of scissors.
Visit the Loss Prevention Store for Alpha 2Alarm, Alpha 3Alarm, Alpha Fashion2, Alpha Jewel Lok, Alpha Nano Gate,  Alpha Shark Tag, Alpha Spider Wrap and other retail anti-theft devices from Alpha Security to use in conjunction with your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system that can help you prevent shoplifting in your business.

Pass Them By- Alpha Shark Tag

Not all retail anti theft devices are integrated with EAS tags to sound an alarm. Take the Alpha Security Alpha Shark Tag for example, there is no EAS imbedded in the tag, but it is still an effective way to maintain store profits.
By design, the Alpha Shark Tag is designed to be a deterrent against customers who want to “wardrobe” an item. That means the consumer intends to buy a piece of clothing with the sole intent on wearing it once and then returning the item with a receipt for a full refund.
These purchases happen usually for special events (weddings, holiday parties, prom) and are either high end items or single wear items that a customer simply can not afford or want to keep (furs, ball gowns, tuxedos and accessories).
The Alpha Shark Tag is a small plastic tag that attaches to the front of a garment in a very conspicuous place. If the customer tries to remove the tag, they will not be able to return the item without visible damage to the tag. An unsuspecting shoplifter might bypass such an item because they assume the tags are also retail anti theft devices there to prevent shoplifting.

And a Bag of Chips – Employee Theft

The most recent employee theft investigation we conducted started out with a missing bag of chips.

We saw an employee eating a bag of chips and wondered if she had paid for it. When we reviewed the journal transactions, we saw that she did in fact ring up the bag of chips. However, she had paid for those chips with a store credit.

It was then that we suspected this might be an employee theft case.

This particular store credit was issued about fifteen minutes before the employee paid for her snack. When we went back and reviewed the refund that generated the store credit, we discovered that the employee had created a fraudulent refund.

She rang up an item that was sitting close to the register for the return. It was not her item to refund, nor did a customer initiate it. We knew right then that the employee theft was not from the chips, but from a fake refund transaction conducted by the employee.

We questioned the employee about the transaction and she admitted that she needed the money to buy food for her and her son. It was a very sad situation that she was in. Unfortunately, her pride kept her from asking for help. She decided that her only option was to steal to make ends meet.

While the theft was inexcusable, we were able to get the employee to some places that could help her and her son out until they could find better times.

Already In the Middle – Checkpoint Security Tags

Grocery items are turning into the next big add on for a lot of markets and general merchandise stores. Many are starting to add cooler systems to be able to sell fresh meats, instead of just packaged ones. This creates a great addition for the customers, but also adds a new opportunity for shoplifters. In turn, you must find a way to stop shoplifting of this new product.

What many consumers do not know is that Checkpoint Security tags actually go beyond the clothing department. They also have anti shoplifting tags that are designed for grocery applications. The RF Soaker Pad is one of those products created to stop shoplifting fresh meats.

The nice thing about using these Checkpoint Security tags is that there is no additional process that needs to be conducted for optimum retail theft prevention. The RF Soaker Pads are simply used instead of the non-EAS pads. The production department puts the new soaker pad on the Styrofoam package and then the meat goes on top.

The retail theft prevention food label that is imbedded in the soaker pad is designed to work after it has been in contact with the liquids. As long as at least half a pound of meat is placed on the soaker pad, the RF Soaker Pad is microwavable.

Only Worn Once- Alpha Shark Tags

It is extremely difficult to stay at the height of fashion when you have a large and unsightly security tag affixed to the center of your blouse or special occasion outfit. For many women, in particular, this might be a reality as the practice of wardrobing retail becomes harder with more retailers’ using alpha shark tags.
When someone is wardrobing pieces of merchandise, they are buying an item to wear one time and then return to get their money back.
This is all to frequent with special occasion items (for example) where the wearer can’t justify spending the money on the item that will be worn only once, maybe twice.
These women keep the price tags on, being careful not to spill on or otherwise soil the merchandise, and return the item soon after the event. The justification comes from feeling like they gave back an item that is as good as new, so the retailer could not possibly be out anything.
Since they have taken such good care of the item, they feel like they are free to continue this practice of wardrobing retail to stay at the height of fashion.
Yes, in some circles, it is still taboo to wear the same thing one more than one occasion. There is a social pressure to have the latest looks, or at least a different one than what was worn to the last soiree.
Alpha Shark Tags help eliminate this one time use process. Because the tags are too obvious to be hidden, wardrobing is no longer an option.

Which One To Pick? – Background Check Company

Finding a background check company can be a daunting task. You need to find one that is competent and legitimate. Faced with a barrage of information, both good and bad, can make it even harder to determine which one to pick.

It is important to conduct pre-employment screening to find the best-qualified applicant for your open jobs. When you have a background check company to do the digging, you will have more thorough checks completed.

One of the first things to look at is price. Each background check company will have a set of pricing guidelines. Even though you might be tempted to go with the lowest price company, you might not be getting everything you are expecting to have.

There is usually a reason why the price is so low. They may not verify information through a legitimate credit-reporting agency. That can put you into potential legal problems down the road. If they give you bad information that causes you to decline an applicant, you are the one that will ultimately be held responsible. An applicant has a legal recourse as they can verify and dispute this information.

The price might also be low because the company itself is a scam. They might want to steal personal information for their own usage. By keeping a low price, they are attempting to lure in unsuspecting customers who will hand over applicants’ information without question.

Finding a low price can be a warning that further investigation on your part is needed.

Don’t Taste That! – Alpha Security

Many local wineries rely on a customer’s ability to taste their wines as part of the selling process. If a customer can taste the product, there is a better chance that they will buy a bottle. In New York there has been a change to allow farm stands to sell wine as long as it is from a local winery. There is a provision that does not allow for tastings though. With these restrictions, there is a higher likely hood that without bottle locks customers will try and sneak a taste before they purchase.
Even though bottle locks do a very good job at protecting inventory from shoplifters, it is not their only function. They can be used for their product denial benefits. Because the design of the bottle lock creates an impassable barrier to the interior contents of the wine, they are a perfect solution for wineries and farm stands.
This particular bottle security need does not need to be linked up to an alarm system to work. Preventing against unauthorized tastings only needs the product denial from the bottle locks, not the alarming mechanism that deters shoplifters. That is the biggest reason why Alpha Security bottle security products works very well in a farm stand setting. It is an easier way to protect the wine bottles from unauthorized access without having to unnecessarily spending money to have an entire EAS or RF alarm system installed.

Keep Your Show Room Inviting- Anti Shoplifting

The Alpha Security Atlas Display is a great solution to anti shoplifting and show rooming. It will secure electronic devices while allowing a wider range of accessibility for the customer.
Show rooming is becoming more frequent as more shoppers are turning to online ordering and price comparisons. These savvy shoppers scour the internet sites for the best price of a particular electronic device they want. Rather than buying this item sight unseen, they drive to the closest brick and mortar store to visually inspect and understand the device. They are able to use the knowledgeable sales staff to answer any particular questions they might have. Unfortunately, these customers will then go back home an purchase online where the pricing is cheaper.
Inside the store, retailers need to provide displays so they have a fighting chance of securing the sale, instead of driving the already scarce customers elsewhere to make their purchases. In doing so, these electronic devices need to be accessible to the customer, but also need to be stop shoplifting.
The solution is to make sure that you have all of the displays working and accessible to the customer. If you are missing display, you can guarantee that the customer definitely will buy elsewhere. If you have the displays and knowledgeable staff, you have a better chance of convincing the customer why there is an advantage to buying the product then and there from your store.

What Did You Learn Today? – Loss Prevention Training

Every day I try and ask myself what I learned. Sometimes it is some completely mind blowing piece of information that will forever change my outlook on life. Sometimes it is just a bit of pop trivia in the news. Other times, it is a new skill or recipe that I learned (I am trying to be a better cook). Even after years in the Loss Prevention trade, sometimes what I learn is a new shoplifting or employee theft technique.

You can never be too old to learn something new. Even if all you learn is that you are slowly becoming more out dated and obsolete as time goes by. That is why professionally I try to stay on top of new shoplifting tools and techniques by attending loss prevention seminars.

Even employee theft changes as time goes by. Yes, the basic principles are still there, but attending loss prevention training never hurts. The loss prevention workshop will show you what is currently trending with the criminal element. It can also show you how to update your security, and your policies to reduce or potentially eliminate the losses your store might be incurring. Believe me, it is something that is much easier to do if you have the right loss prevention training vs. doing it all on your own.
