Keeping Up With The Shoplifters- Alpha 3 Alarm

Using EAS tags to prevent shoplifting is a statistically sound prevention technique. Time and time again, retailers who use these retail anti theft devices see a significant reduction in inventory losses.
That does not mean that shoplifters simply walk away never to bee seen or heard from again. What we find is that shoplifters are continually trying to beat the system. Over the years since EAS was first used, shoplifter have spent their time trying to thwart these tags.
Shoplifters will tamper with the tags to defeat them. They also might risk setting off the alarm and leaving with the merchandise even though they might be noticed while heading out the door.
Either way, each time a shoplifter develops a new plan, there must be new retail anti theft devices designed to thwart them.
Alpha Security has come up with a different approach to in response to shoplifter’s continual attempts to defeat EAS tagging products. They developed the Alpha 3 Alarm. This is an EAS tag that has an extra deterrent for shoplifting.
The Alpha 3 Alarm added an audible alarm directly to the EAS tag that sounds when the tag passes through the store’s exit doors without being deactivated.
Visit the Loss Prevention Store for Alpha 2Alarm, Alpha 3Alarm, Alpha Fashion2, Alpha Jewel Lok, Alpha Nano Gate,  Alpha Shark Tag, Alpha Spider Wrap and other retail anti-theft devices from Alpha Security to use in conjunction with your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system that can help you prevent shoplifting in your business.

EASy On The Eyes- Liquor Bottle Security

Whether you have a theft issue with well spirits, top shelf or even higher end premium wine and liquor bottles you want liquor bottle security that will be aesthetically pleasing.
By using Alpha Security EASy Bottle for the preferred brand of bottle locks, any liquor store format will benefit from these optimal merchandising aesthetics.
The EASy bottle is a sleek design. Because it is not bulky makes it perfect for all retail environments.
For small liquor stores these locks will not create excessive bulk like other kinds of locks do. When you are forced to reduce your shelf quantities because fewer bottles can’t fit on the shelf you are loosing potential sales by being out of stock more frequently. You also increase labor hours because your employees are forced to restock empty shelves more frequently. The addition of these bottle locks will not create a significant reduction in the shelf quantity of merchandise.
For higher end liquor stores that are more concerned with the overall look of the store and the customer’s perception, you want to have a more subtle approach to liquor bottle security. Since these locks are primarily clear they are providing a better product display.
When the customer scans the store to find what they are looking for, their view is not inundated with views of liquor bottle security. They still primarily view the product’s bottles or packaging, which is what you want to have happen.
Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase EASy Bottle bottle locks by Alpha Security and your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system.

More Than One Holiday- Wardrobing

Wardrobing is a strong focus throughout the November/ December holiday season. Because of the strong presence of holiday parties, events and gatherings, an unfortunate number of consumers will attempt wardrobing their purchases. It is a way fro them to offset their gift buying or need for multiple outfits for multiple events.
What we are not focusing on is the lesser holidays that occur almost every month throughout the year.
Do you carry a special line of green for St. Patrick’s Day? How about fireworks themed or red, white and blue apparel for the Fourth of July? I would bet that you do.
Unfortunately, buyer’s remorse can often settle in with these holiday themed clothing items. Once the excitement of the day is passed, many shoppers realize the limits of the item they purchased. They know they would feel silly with a St. Pats shirt on in the middle of August, or a Halloween outfit in April. Even something as universal as a heart for Valentine’s day might seem out of place a month later.
It is then that these shoppers start to think about returning their purchase to get a refund. Since these holiday items are generally sold within a short span of time, the buyer would be within even a 30-day refund policy.
Using Alpha Shark Tags will help eliminate wardrobing holiday specific returns to your store.

What Do They Want –Stop Shoplifting

Rutgers University criminologist Ronald V. Clarke came up with an acronym for what kinds of products are susceptible to theft. He uses “CRAVED” for any of the hot products that a shoplifter might be interested in stealing. That means they are- Concealable, Removable, Available, Valuable, Enjoyable and Disposable. When you try to stop shoplifting in your store specifically, you should look to what is “CRAVED” to determine your next course of action.
Once you determine which products in your store are “CRAVED” most, you can begin to tailor your retail theft prevention towards those specific items. That could mean installing anti shoplifting systems like the popular brand Checkpoint Systems.
If you need a more immediate action plan to stop shoplifting, you should look to improving your customer service training and awareness. Some reports state that when a customer (or suspect) is greeted immediately upon entering a store, they are 64% more likely to not steal than if they are not greeted. The more customer interaction with your employees, the better that percentage gets- and your sales improve too.
Regardless of any specific application it all comes down to what is “CRAVED” in your store. That understanding can make a significant impact on effectively reducing your in store shrink and other losses.

On- line Ordering- Clothing Security

As on line orders become increasingly popular, brick and mortar stores are scrambling to adapt to these new consumer shopping habits. One of the current trends is to allow customers to place their orders on line, and then pick up the merchandise in the store. With this change to shopping habits come changes to our clothing security.
The “old fashioned” way of shopping was a customer actually had to come into the store, select their items and carry them to the register to be rung up. Any clothing security tags were removed at this point of sale.
Now, the customer has already paid for their items, and the employees are the ones to gather the merchandise and take it to a central check out location/ customer service area. Here is where a decision needs to be made regarding the security tags on clothes.
Do you remove the Checkpoint tags now, in an effort to expedite the customers wait (a big part of why they shopped on line to begin with)? If so, you run the risk of shoplifting or employee theft of readily accessible items that have the clothing security already removed.
Or, you can leave the tags on, protecting your merchandise from this easy access, and run the risk of irritating the customer who is expecting a smooth and quick pick-up process?

Without Conflict – Alpha 3 Alarm

When a shoplifter exits a store with an Alpha 3 Alarm secured item of merchandise, the exit doors alarm, and so does the actual the merchandise. The EAS tag has an internal alarm that emits a loud audible alarm if not deactivated at the point of sale. If the shoplifter continues to leave with the store with the merchandise, the audible alarm on the product will make it impossible for the shoplifter not to be noticed.
When we utilize Alpha Security Alpha 3 Alarm as part of our prevent shoplifting strategy, we are creating a situation where the shoplifters benefit by discarding the product on their own volition. When we attempt to interact with a shoplifter, specifically when we attempt to make a detention, we run the risk of a conflict situation escalating.
When a shoplifter is faced with confrontation they may come back to the store quietly. There is also the chance that they might try to run, or they might try to fight there way out of the situation. This puts you and everyone else around you in the risk of injury.
If you are using Alpha 3 Alarm retail anti theft devices, the alarm will encourage the shoplifter to discard the merchandise rather than continuing to hold onto something emitting a loud, noticeable noise. Once they discard the merchandise, the retailer can follow the sound until they find and retrieve the merchandise. All without further incident or risk of conflict.

The Dummy Case- Stop Shoplifting

I had a store that was having an extremely hard time with one of their packaged products being stolen. For an attempt at anti shoplifting the store started to put out dummy cases in place of live product.
A dummy case is basically an empty package that sits on a selling shelf. Sometimes it acts as a display, sometimes the customer brings the empty box to the register- then they get the actual product at check out. Video rental stores notoriously did the latter.
In our situation, the dummy case was more for display and retail theft prevention. Since the actual product was kept separately, we didn’t need to worry about the case being taken. I guess we forgot to let the shoplifters know because the next day I saw an employee putting out a new empty case.
When I asked why, he told me that someone came and took the box. Holding back my laughter, I told the employee it was ok, because the thief had worked really hard to steal an empty case. Imagine their surprise when they got the case open and discovered there was nothing inside.
Retail theft prevention doesn’t have to be complicated; it just has to be smarter than your average criminal.

The Next Level Of Searches- Background Check Experts

You might assume that an employee caught stealing from their previous employer will automatically appear on pre employment screening.
This is not always the case. An employee must be given the chance to prove their innocence in a court of law. If they are convicted and found guilty by those courts, then- and only then- will their crimes be committed to public record.
If you have hired background check experts to execute your initial employee background checks, you are assuming that they will be able to track down every little tidbit of information that they can.
For the most part, you are right. No matter how thorough the background check experts are, they can only discover so much, based on which reports they are searching.
If it is a rather egregious offense, the basic employee background checks should discover them. However, there are lesser offenses that are just as criminal, but do not show up on pre employment screening. If a company does not prosecute- for whatever reason- an employee’s misdoings will not become public record, therefore not appearing on employee background checks.
This is when background check experts must then do additional employment verifications or search agencies that document employee theft cases. They may charge an additional cost to potential employers to do these additional searches. Depending on the quality of the employees you hire on a regular basis, this may end up being money well spent- compared to hiring a known thief.

A Matter of Size- Bottle Security

Alpha Security has done an outstanding job of designing bottle security that individually suits the diverse assortment of liquor bottles found in virtually every liquor store. I have recently started using bottle locks in my stores. One of the most beneficial to me is the Magna Guarde. It has features that I can’t find on other locks that work to protect my two highest theft tequilas- Patron and 1800.
The extra large size better accommodates the unusual cap sizes found in many tequila brands. To better secure a proper fit, the Magna Guarde has a clamshell design, providing additional benefit denial protection. The clamshell’s internal hinge makes it virtually impossible to defeat.  A button on the bottom of the base adjusts to further create a secure fit; specific to the bottle you are using it on.
Alpha Security prides their self in creating bottle security that has easy applications and removal is key to customer satisfaction and employee compliance rates. The clear cap makes it easy to read bottle label and tax information. It won’t do you any good to protect your inventory and profits from theft, only to loose that money to fines from a failed state audit.
Bottle locks are not one size fits all, because the liquor bottles they are trying to protect do not come in one size fits all. This is one case where size really does matter.

A Difficult Subject- Employee Theft

As a business owner or manager you have probably seen your share of employee theft over the years. It is a difficult problem in many ways. Not only do you suffer the financial losses caused by employee theft, but you can also suffer the emotional loss caused by this employee’s betrayal.
Over time, you might be more desensitized by these emotional losses and can begin to develop a general distrust for most employees. This makes it hard to be a good leader and a good listener. If you are not approachable, your current employees may not feel comfortable coming to you with information about an employee theft situation.
Let’s face it; your employees are probably going to be more aware of this theft before you are.
It might be time to participate in some loss prevention seminars. They will help you come to terms with your store’s past theft issues. They will also be able to help broach the subject with your current employees. Loss prevention workshops are designed to open up the lines of communication.
You might not be jaded from past experiences and still not be viewed as approachable. Sometimes, employees who are privy to theft happening in the store simply do not know what to do with the information. By providing a new outlet for communication, you have a better chance of eliminating or responding quickly to these instances of theft.
