A Quick Fix- Checkpoint Labels

Checkpoint Labels conveniently are used for retail theft prevention, but in a different way than Checkpoint Tags are. Where as the tags are designed to be visible to shoppers and shoplifters, the labels are usually hidden form view.
Checkpoint Labels are put in boxes, or inside of a pocket. Sometimes they are on the outside of a clamshell package.
Deactivated at the point of sale, but they are not removed from the merchandise, Checkpoint labels are the better solution for quick customer checkouts. Checkpoint Systems provides the deactivator pad that deactivates the labels. As long as the label passes over the deactivator pad, the label will be deactivated.
Checkpoint Tags on the other hand, are hard plastic tags used in almost every major retailer for retail theft prevention.
Apply the Checkpoint Tags before the merchandise is displayed on the sales floor. At the point of sale, an employee removes the hard tags with a Checkpoint Systems provided detacher.
The tags are removed in two parts- the pin and the button. Each part is put into a bin to be recycled for use with the next shipment of merchandise.
Since the Checkpoint Labels stay on the merchandise, they are not recycled onto new store merchandise like the Checkpoint Tags are.

The Same Standards Of Accountability- Prevent Shoplifting

While I am a firm believer that all employees need to be held to the same accountability and responsibility standards, it is critical to your business that any part time employees are properly trained and managed to ensure the success of your retail operations. In particular, any attempts to prevent shoplifting through customer service or retail anti theft devices must be monitored closely on a continual basis.
Part time employees might make for a better financial situation, but this is generally a case of you get what you pay for. Because part time employees are less likely to have guaranteed hours or might not be eligible for benefits, they are also less likely to be truly engaged in your business.
When the responsibility falls onto part time employees, retail anti theft devices generally are more likely to be used inconsistently. It can be a tedious task of applying retail anti theft devices, and then removing them during check out.
Part time employees simply do not care if a customer is inconvenienced by an alarm or if they actually contribute to the store security process. Even if they are held to the same standards as full time employees, there is a reality that the follow through of the part time employees might be lacking.

Up To You –Wardrobing Tags

There are some forms of return fraud that is very clearly illegal, however wardrobing retail is not one of them. Most state legislation only says that a retailer must post their return policy in a prominent location. They say nothing about how a retailer outlines what is acceptable within those policies.
Since there are still a fair amount of retailers that welcome back refunds of merchandise in any condition, it makes it even harder to form actual legislation on wardrobing.
Would you be happy if state laws outlined exactly how your return policy should read? Probably not. Because there are so many variables and variations, it would be difficult to find a universal return policy that retailers would find neither too strict nor too lenient.
That leaves it up to the individual retailers to create their own return policy as well as finding clear-cut ways to discourage wardrobing retail within their stores.
Some retailers have found success through having an “all sales are final” policy. Simple and effective; no one can abuse a policy that has no margin for exception. As this can potentially alienate a large, honest customer base, maybe a less strict policy can be utilized. Maybe a 30-day policy would work, or implementing Wardrobing Tags on all of your special occasion items can be effective in your situation.
Until that time that all retailers can agree on one policy, it is best for you to decide what your store would and would not find acceptable and then make sure it was clear to all of your customers.

Alpha Security takes great pride in the ease of use for these bottle locks. A one-handed removal process helps ensure an efficient check out process. Long Term Payout- Checkpoint Systems

One of my retail companies signed on with Checkpoint Systems for their installation and maintenance of their new door pedestals and the corresponding Checkpoint tags for anti shoplifting.
The contract they signed also included a service contract for their camera system and other video and recording equipment. They thought they were completely covered.
They knew that Checkpoint tags are pretty low maintenance, and the door pedestals generally have minimal issues beyond the annual servicing and testing. Where they really wanted the service contract was with the camera system. It had been patch worked together over the years as funds had become available to invest in a camera or DVR system.
As the cameras would slowly break down, they discovered that Checkpoint Security Systems are limited on what they could do to repair them. Because most of the cameras had been bought at a discount, they were off brands with limited warranties.
The end result was that we spent more to replace the camera systems with proprietary branded Checkpoint Security Systems components. Their products are more reliable and are covered under their service contract making them a more affordable investment over the years. Instead of spending money on unreliable and unserviceable equipment may have saved money initially, but ended up costing much more over the long term.

Not Always Accurate- Background Check Experts

When you contract with reputable and experience background check experts, you should not have to worry that they will try and make your business liable for errors found on pre employment screening. They need to stand behind their work and the background checks that they generate for you.
If for some reason, the background check company will not back their work, or pushes the liability back to you, you need to go elsewhere.  That should be an enormous red flag that these so called background check experts may not actually be in the business of providing accurate background checks.
When you conduct pre employment screening, your business can be held liable for the information that you find. In particular, if a potential candidate is declined employment based off of those findings, they can come back at you and your business.
If a potential job candidate feels like they were wrongfully declined, they have the option to contest the check, and bring potential litigation against your business if the pre employment screening was proven to contain misinformation.
When you contract background check experts, you push this liability back to them. They are now responsible for providing you accurate and timely employee background checks. If for some reason there is determined to be erroneous information, the liability is with the background check experts and not with you.
Employee background checks are not always accurate. It is in how the errors are resolved and how the potential candidate feels they are treated in the process that determines how likely they will be to start litigation against you.

Time Commitment- Clothing Security

Confronting or detaining a shoplifter takes an intimate knowledge of the crime. That means you have to personally witness the event. You have to know one hundred percent, undeniably, that the clothing the person has is yours, and they intended to steal it. While some of the larger companies have access to RFID tags as a part of their clothing alarm, smaller business still have to rely on being an actual eyewitness to determine which specific pieces of merchandise have been concealed.
During the initial detainment you have to make sure the shoplifter knows you have complete knowledge of their actions. That usually includes you stating “ I know you have Item A hidden in your bag (pocket, purse, coat, etc)”. By stating the exact item and the exact location the item was concealed, you have proven your knowledge of their theft attempt.
An accusation that has no truth to it can result in a wrongful detainment lawsuit from the accused, costing an enormous sum of money and time. You have to be able to dedicate your complete attention to watching a shoplifter. Sometimes that can be five minutes, sometimes forty-five. If dedicating that kind of time to reduce shoplifting losses just isn’t plausible for you, checkpoint tags are an effective deterrent.
They stop losses before they even begin. Clothing security, especially in the form of clothing security tags, pushes the shoplifters to a store that has no clothing security or security tags on clothes.

A Larger Audience- Loss Prevention Seminars

When businesses take a stand against shoplifting losses within their walls, the community takes notice. Instead of going somewhere else, the community comes to you. They begin to share a positive message of your stores, thus growing your business as more customers come to you for their shopping needs.
The question is, however, how do you take that initial stand against shoplifting?
Many larger retailers are encouraging their employees to get their Loss Prevention Certification from the Loss Prevention Foundation. These retailers are ones who have the luxury of employing full time loss prevention personnel.
This formalized training and certification is expensive, too expensive for most small businesses. It would be difficult to get the return on that investment, especially if you were looking for loss prevention training that could be disseminated to your entire team of employees and managers. That doesn’t mean that it is not beneficial to have this kind of training.
By attending more affordable loss prevention seminars, you can get your entire team involved and educated. Benefits to this kind of loss prevention training include better job performance by providing awareness of methods and kinds of losses that retailer’s incur. They can improve competencies needed to resolve shrink losses and implications. They can also improve the perception of your company or business within the community.
When you find loss prevention seminars that are affordable to your entire team, you will get the same information and knowledge that you would through the loss prevention certification. The difference is more employees can attend, and you can gear the loss prevention seminars to the information that you need for your stores specifically.

Fallen To The Wayside- Retail Anti Theft Devices

A shoplifter thrives on disorganization, unattended corners of a store, and a lack of employee presence. If you do not keep your store, clean, organized, and recovered promptly, a shoplifter can slip by undetected. Understanding how to prevent shoplifting requires a need to look past retail anti theft devices as the sole solution.
If you have a table of jeans that are thrown about and disorganized, you have no way of knowing if something is missing. A table of carefully folded and laid out jeans is more likely to be noticed if one, or several, jeans are missing.
The same goes for high theft items that can be taken to an isolated corner. Sometimes moving a shelf or a table can create a better sightline for your employees to see what is going on.
Similarly, your employees need to engage all customers. If they ignore your paying customers, you can be rest assured that they are ignoring the shoplifters too.
Retail anti theft devices play an important part in the overall success of a store’s ability to prevent shoplifting. Stores need to also realize that retail anti theft devices can only be so successful to prevent shoplifting if these other operational controls have fallen to the wayside.

Creating a Cash Overage- Internal Theft

It was by chance that we discovered our latest internal theft case. We had just received a shipment of a particular new product. A few days later, we were out of stock on that item, but we didn’t see the sales we should have on it.
After beginning to review the journal tape, we noticed that at the end of the day there had been several voided cash transactions. Many of which had involved this new item. When we started to suspect internal theft, we began to review journal tapes from other days.
We noticed a pattern. A particular closing manager would have several cash transactions voided out just before store closing. Some of the transactions were ones that had occurred earlier in the day before she even got to work.
We watched video from the cash office during her closing shifts and discovered that she would take money out of the tills and put it in her purse.
She admitted that she would search the journal tapes for cash transactions and then post void them out. She would take that dollar amount in cash for herself-, which is why there wasn’t a cash shortage. Because the customer was leaving with the merchandise the shortage came from the inventory losses.
In essence she had eliminated the sales causing the inventory to leave the store unaccounted for. Because the sales were originally paid for in cash, the transaction void caused unaccounted for cash in the register. The employee took the cash for her own thinking that she had eliminated the trail to her employee theft.
