A Tried And True Prevention- Loss Prevention Seminars

If an employee is thinking about stealing, they know that the more people who are aware of methods and red flags will make it more likely to be caught. The less of an emphasis on security, operational controls and checks, and internal audits means it is easier for employee theft to occur.
One tried and true way of preventing employee theft in your stores is to send your entire team of employees through a loss prevention workshop. When you take your team of employees to these loss prevention seminars, you are actually showing them why they should not steal.
These seminars are designed to create more eyes and ears in an otherwise oblivious location that will now be aware of what is going on at the store level. By sending your employees to loss prevention training sends a message that you are raising awareness of all facets of your business. Employee theft adamantly will not be tolerated.
The businesses that are most prone to employee theft and embezzlement are the ones who have minimal employee awareness and lackadaisical operational controls. Any actions you can take to improve on these substandard business practices will reduce the risk you have of an employee knowingly taking advantage of you and your company’s assets.

What You Lose When You Aren’t Losing- Prevent Shoplifting

An open merchandising solution entails a customer’s ability to pick the product up at their leisure. It allows them to read labels, feel fabrics or materials, and inspect an item up close for quality.
When the customer feels like they have gathered enough information to make a purchasing decision, they buy the item. Some customers are turned off by the prospect of needing an employee to assist them.
Either they do not want to endure a barrage of questions about what they are looking for, or the customer simply does not have the time to track down an employee to get the item for them. Open merchandising allows the customer to take control of their purchase.
Each time a retailer tries to lock up their high theft merchandise behind a case, or some other form of employee control, sales go down. It has been proven time and time again from every product assortment and specialty niche that has undergone a locking solution. As a result, many retailers often miss out on the fact that while they are no longer missing inventory due to theft, they are missing out on valuable sales.
In many cases, the lost sales out number the losses from theft of these items.

Avoidance Behavior- Retail Theft Prevention

There is a new thought emerging around how customers shop at different locations based around their perceived safety. The studies are centered on a fear of crime in ordinary shoppers. The higher the fear, the more likely for avoidance behavior- basically a shopper will either altogether avoid a store, or will get in and out really quickly.
Both avoidance behaviors result in a loss of sales for the retailer in question. Obviously if customers will not even enter a store, there is no way to sell them anything. If a customer comes in, but rushes to get out, all carefully laid out merchandising plans, sales and promotions do no good to generate additional sales- the customer is simply oblivious to them.
What you can do to prevent avoidance behavior of this kind is to create a safe environment for your customers and your employees. Make sure parking lot lights are on (and working) when it starts to get dark. Use EAS tags and other kinds of theft prevention like cameras and domes to deter shoplifters and other criminals from even entering your store. Build a relationship with your local police department, so they routinely stop by to say hi and make sure you are safe.

New York, New Rules- EASy Bottle

New York is in the middle of a debate about changing its liquor laws. Many want larger grocery and mass retail stores will be allowed to sell wine. While this particular bit of legislature is still a long way off, there has been a change to allow farm stands to sell wine. Of particular interest is the provision that does not allow for tastings. As such, even a roadside farm stand can benefit from EASy Bottle locks.
Many local wineries rely on a customer’s ability to taste their wines as part of the selling process. If a customer can taste the product, there is a better chance that they will buy a bottle. With the restrictions that farm stand have, there is a higher likely hood that customers will try and sneak a taste before they purchase.
Bottle locks are not just used for bottle security to protect from shoplifters. They can be used for their product denial benefits. Because the design of the bottle lock creates an impassable barrier to the interior contents of the wine, they are a perfect solution.
Because the Alpha Security EASy Bottle does not need to be linked up to an alarm system to prevent against unauthorized tastings, it works very well in the farm stand setting. It is an easier way to protect the wine bottles from unauthorized access without having to unnecessarily spending money to have an entire EAS or RF alarm system installed.
Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase EASy Bottle bottle locks by Alpha Security and your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system.

Big Protection, Tiny Package- Clothing Security Tags

Shoes always pose a problem for clothing security. The two biggest losses in the shoe department are inventory shrink losses from shoplifters or employees.
These theft losses are pretty straightforward. Often a shoplifter will come into the store with an old pair of shoes and try on a new pair. They put their old pair in the box and walk out with the new pair. An employee might do the same, or they will be more likely to pass off the shoes at the point of sale to a friend or relative.
Using Checkpoint tags only partially solves each of these problems. Since the pin system only works when there is an eye to thread the stickpin through, many shoes cannot be tagged. Strappy heels, dress shoes and sandals are prime examples. Without clothing security tags, it is just that much easier for a shoplifter to walk out the door unnoticed.
Using the Alpha Security Mini CableLok instead of checkpoint tags offers more range for your clothing security tags. The Mini CableLok is a small 3” aircraft grade cable with an isolated sound chamber. The cable can be looped through straps or decorations that would secure the lock. By increasing the range of merchandise that can now be secured, to makes it harder for a shoplifter or an employee to sneak out the door.

Underappreciated Leads To Overcompensated- Internal Theft

When employees are not appreciated they will look for somewhere else to go. If their efforts are not being rewarded through praise or a raise they begin to question why they should even bother putting in the effort.
This is where most employees look at one of two options. They might eliminate the position they are in through a lateral transfer, promotion, or leave the company entirely.
Another alternative is when employees begin to feel like they have been robbed out of other compensations for their hard work, they may devise a plan to compensate themselves. Some employees compensate themselves by beginning to steal time.
They may start taking longer lunch breaks, leaving early or coming in late. They do not have the same loyalty and drive to be the best and their hours worked can start to reflect that change. Time theft is the most easily justified form or theft by employees.
When an employee sees other employees coming in late without recourse from management, they feel like they can do it to, and also can get away with it.
Other employees will begin to take company supplies, whether they need them or not. Extra pens, paper, can eventually escalate into company computers, tablets or other electronics. Even more employees will steal cash or steal merchandise. They might take it directly, or hand the products off to friends or family.
Theft created by employees is often the byproduct of feeling unappreciated. The employees will overcompensate themselves because they feel as if they are deserving of it.

Lowest Possible Denominator – Criminal Background Checks

In my experience, people will admit to the lowest denominator that they think they can get away with. Employees and shoplifters only admit to a fraction of what they actually stole. Other criminals will downplay the number of times they committed a crime. Do they really think that we will believe they were caught the very first time they did something wrong? No, they probably had done the action/ criminal activity over and over until it was so blatant that they were finally caught. Criminal background checks help to unearth if there is more activity than what a job applicant is admitting to.
I was recently looking to hire a new employee. He cam on a referral and the store managers wanted to rush to hire him, even to bypass the usual pre employment screening. I was hesitant to hire someone so quickly, but I told them to fill out the application first and I would see what I could do.
On his application, he put down that he had a DUI a few years ago. While I am glad that he admitted to his charge, I was still left with questions about his judgment.
Is this someone with a drinking problem, or just had a momentary lapse in judgment?
Can I rely on them in a high impact situation, or to have consistency in their day-to-day behaviors?
I knew then that I needed to have a more thorough criminal background check. As I suspected, this applicant had a ling history of DUI related incidents. He had thought if he admitted to one, I wouldn’t pursue other pre employment screening and see how many he really had.

Don’t Throw It Away- Clothing Security

Would you throw a hundred dollar bill in the trash for no reason? How about a twenty? No? Well maybe you would walk by a trashcan and throw a dollar bill into it without caring; it is just a dollar after all?
If you wouldn’t throw money away on purpose, than you probably keep pretty tight controls on your business’s cash.
You probably have register reports that tell you how much cash you should have at the end of the day. You probably also count the cash in your safe and any starting banks for your tills. You most likely have a bank deposit log for outgoing deposits, and balance that record against your account statements form the bank every quarter, if not every month.
How about your merchandise? Do you keep the same level of control on your merchandise as you do your cash?
Do you maintain inventory tracking and counting on a quarterly basis?  Once a quarter might be to frequent for some business, so how about conducting a full inventory once every six months, or once a year?
You have a locking cash register and understand the importance of securing your cash, so why wouldn’t you secure you clothing and other inventory products?
Because you spent your carefully managed and tracked cash on purchasing your inventory, would it not make sense that you should spend as much time and effort in protecting your clothing inventory from losses?

Too Much Is Never A Good Thing- Prevent Shoplifting

When you guess at your inventory levels, stopping theft is actually only one part of your worries. You need to be concerned also with how your business capital is being spent and where that money is going. Before you start to look at electronic article security systems and other inventory security, you need to have an idea of what you have and what you are missing.
Accurate inventory is about making sure you have the right products at the right time. I had worked for a company that was spending money on inventory they thought they were missing, instead of on things the stores really did need. They said that they had to cut funds to other things because so much of their revenue was going to replenish the missing inventory.
What we later found out is that the company was spending too much money on inventory they thought they needed, but really didn’t. If they had conducted an inventory, they would have realized that the missing inventory was at another one of their locations as the result of a delivery error.
By inventorying all of their stores, they would have found the huge overage, instead of over ordering the product and wasting their money.

Can’t Change Her Mind – Wardrobing Retail

As a retailer, it is our job not to try and change the perception of these customers. It is our job to eliminate the opportunity within our own store for wardrobing retail to take place.
Two ladies were talking about the interview one of them had later. One of the ladies was expressing her disgust at the other coffee shop patrons who were walking to closely to her with their cups of coffee.
She talked about how mad she would be if someone spilt even a drop of coffee on her new outfit. At first I sympathized thinking that if I had bought a new outfit to impress a potential employer, I would not want to show up with coffee stains all over it.
Then I realized that the lady was upset because she needed to keep the outfit nice so she could return it to the store the next day. It actually made me so disgusted that I personally wanted to “accidentally” spill my coffee on her. Then I realized- what good would that do?
The lady was so open about her actions that this very clearly was not her first time doing so. Unfortunately, this also would not be her last.
Wardrobing is a part of her lifestyle. It probably is something she had done for so long, that she no longer sees anything wrong with it, if she ever even felt any remorse or hesitation about it.
