There is a new thought emerging around how customers shop at different locations based around their perceived safety. The studies are centered on a fear of crime in ordinary shoppers. The higher the fear, the more likely for avoidance behavior- basically a shopper will either altogether avoid a store, or will get in and out really quickly.

This is where most employees look at one of two options. They might eliminate the position they are in through a lateral transfer, promotion, or leave the company entirely.
Another alternative is when employees begin to feel like they have been robbed out of other compensations for their hard work, they may devise a plan to compensate themselves. Some employees compensate themselves by beginning to steal time. 
They may start taking longer lunch breaks, leaving early or coming in late. They do not have the same loyalty and drive to be the best and their hours worked can start to reflect that change. Time theft is the most easily justified form or theft by employees. 
When an employee sees other employees coming in late without recourse from management, they feel like they can do it to, and also can get away with it.
Other employees will begin to take company supplies, whether they need them or not. Extra pens, paper, can eventually escalate into company computers, tablets or other electronics. In my experience, people will admit to the lowest denominator that they think they can get away with. Employees and shoplifters only admit to a fraction of what they actually stole. Other criminals will downplay the number of times they committed a crime. Do they really think that we will believe they were caught the very first time they did something wrong? No, they probably had done the action/ criminal activity over and over until it was so blatant that they were finally caught. Criminal background checks help to unearth if there is more activity than what a job applicant is admitting to.
I was recently looking to hire a new employee. He cam on a referral and the store managers wanted to rush to hire him, even to bypass the usual pre employment screening. I was hesitant to hire someone so quickly, but I told them to fill out the application first and I would see what I could do.
On his application, he put down that he had a DUI a few years ago. While I am glad that he admitted to his charge, I was still left with questions about his judgment. 
Is this someone with a drinking problem, or just had a momentary lapse in judgment? 
Can I rely on them in a high impact situation, or to have consistency in their day-to-day behaviors?

Can’t Change Her Mind – Wardrobing Retail

As a retailer, it is our job not to try and change the perception of these customers. It is our job to eliminate the opportunity within our own store for wardrobing retail to take place.
Two ladies were talking about the interview one of them had later. One of the ladies was expressing her disgust at the other coffee shop patrons who were walking to closely to her with their cups of coffee.
She talked about how mad she would be if someone spilt even a drop of coffee on her new outfit. At first I sympathized thinking that if I had bought a new outfit to impress a potential employer, I would not want to show up with coffee stains all over it.
Then I realized that the lady was upset because she needed to keep the outfit nice so she could return it to the store the next day. It actually made me so disgusted that I personally wanted to “accidentally” spill my coffee on her. Then I realized- what good would that do?
The lady was so open about her actions that this very clearly was not her first time doing so. Unfortunately, this also would not be her last.
Wardrobing is a part of her lifestyle. It probably is something she had done for so long, that she no longer sees anything wrong with it, if she ever even felt any remorse or hesitation about it.
