A Mixed Bag- Bottle Security

Any store that allows customers to mix their own packs of beer or wine understands that it is an invaluable selling point. 
Customers can try a variety of tastes and brands that they might not other wise purchase. It also allows customers to try out multiple varieties without making a large commitment to something they might not like. 
Let’s face it; we have all had that five- pack of beer sitting around for months because we didn’t like the first one out of the pack.
For one price, a customer can pick their own six-pack or case of beers, as long as they are from a certain cooler, or designated area of the store. The same rules apply in which the bottles of wine are from specific vendors, or comparable price points.
The problem can arise if a customer starts to take bottles from other areas, or out of pre packed cases. When those cases or packs are tampered with, the store cannot sell the case as full. They might not be able to sell it as a case at all. They are then left with a shortage on that particular item, and might have to take a margin loss by selling the bottles cheaper in a mix pack.

Shoplifting Sandwich- Retail Anti Theft Devices

Our latest shoplifter gave us, and our retail anti theft devices a run for our money.
This particular customer came into our store and used a wheelchair and our handheld shopping basket in his lap. He would go about his business and come to the register to pay for the items. No matter how diligent my cashiers were when they rang him up; the EAS alarm was set off when he left. We would recheck for retail anti theft devices, but could not find them. As it turned out, he was hiding merchandise in one of the baskets, stacking the second one on top and adding more merchandise that he would pay for. When he left, he would leave with all of the extra merchandise sandwiched between our shopping baskets- unpaid for.

One of the biggest comments that I have heard form customers about continuing to buy wine from the smaller liquor store (instead of in a grocery store) is the personalized attention they can get. Small box stores have an opportunity to win their customers over with their knowledge and their selection. They can focus on specific bottles that might not be carried by a big box. They also can provide more in depth product knowledge than your average grocery store employee can. All of that, of course, is contingent on using the bottle locks to make ensure when a customer comes in for a specific bottle, you still have it in stock.

Long Term Business Relationship- Prevent Shoplifting

Looking through a local news report, I realized that I recognized one of the names of a suspect from a recent police sting operation. It was a habitual shoplifter that we had been trying to apprehend almost ten years ago. 
This particular shoplifter was stealing from several locations and would sometime return the items without receipt- using multiple aliases to get around our refund system.
Eventually we did apprehend her and ban her from our stores in addition to having her prosecuted. I guess that didn’t mean much to her, since she has continued with her life of crime all of these years.
What we didn’t understand at the time was that this shoplifter we had assumed was just a small time problem, was actually a major part of a local crime ring. Her entire life was dedicated to stealing product from retailers to later resell to other local businesses. 
She set herself up as a local distributor with lower than average pricing- making it an attractive low cost solution for these local businesses. Most of these businesses had no idea that they were actually buying stolen product. Many had been doing business with this woman for years without any indication of how she obtained her merchandise for distribution.

Looking through a local news report, I realized that I recognized one of the names of a suspect from a recent police sting operation. It was a habitual shoplifter that we had been trying to apprehend almost ten years ago.

This particular shoplifter was stealing from several locations and would sometime return the items without receipt- using multiple aliases to get around our refund system.

Eventually we did apprehend her and ban her from our stores in addition to having her prosecuted. I guess that didn’t mean much to her, since she has continued with her life of crime all of these years.

What we didn’t understand at the time was that this shoplifter we had assumed was just a small time problem, was actually a major part of a local crime ring. Her entire life was dedicated to stealing product from retailers to later resell to other local businesses.

She set herself up as a local distributor with lower than average pricing- making it an attractive low cost solution for these local businesses. Most of these businesses had no idea that they were actually buying stolen product. Many had been doing business with this woman for years without any indication of how she obtained her merchandise for distribution.

Can’t Keep Waiting- Clothing Security

I have spent countless hours watching shoplifters in the act of committing their crimes. One time I spent thirty minutes waiting and “cleaning” the fitting room, because there was a girl inside, who was going to steal a shirt, and kept checking to see if I left. We didn’t have much clothing security, so I knew that she was determined to take the shirt.
Just like every other store employee, at some point you have to stop watching in order to attend to another function of your job.
In this case, there was a hurt customer that I needed to attend to. So I left my potential suspect with the clothes that had no anti theft devices. It wasn’t long before I saw the girl leave. When I went to see if she left the clothes, all I found was a pile of empty hangers.
I knew that if we had used something, anything, even if it were just cheap tags or cheap labels for anti theft devices, this girl would not have left with our merchandise.
