Keep Them Posted- Anti Shoplifting

A large part of retail theft prevention actually comes in the form of education. That means educating your employees on why you use Checkpoint Labels and Checkpoint Tags. It also means educating them on what behaviors a shoplifter demonstrates, and also what they can do to deter the shoplifter from stealing. The more information your employees have to be a part of the solution, the better the chances that they will make attempts to better your business.
Sharing this same information with potential shoplifters is equally as important as a deterrent. That doesn’t mean your employees shout across the store that they think a customer is a shoplifter and they are being watched.
It means that Checkpoint Labels and Checkpoint Tags are not hidden. They are placed strategically and obviously so shoplifters are aware that the store is being protected. While you don’t want to put these anti shoplifting devices in places where customer service and care will be negatively affected, a balance between the two extremes needs to be found.
The same thing goes with signage stating things like “shoplifters will be prosecuted” and “the premises is under video surveillance”.
These signs should be displayed prominently so the information can be readily shared with anyone thinking that they might come steal from your store. A front window is an ideal place, as is the inside of a fitting room. Be careful to not completely plaster your store with these signs and risk alienating your real customers.

A Mixed Bag- Bottle Security

Any store that allows customers to mix their own packs of beer or wine understands that it is an invaluable selling point.
Customers can try a variety of tastes and brands that they might not other wise purchase. It also allows customers to try out multiple varieties without making a large commitment to something they might not like.
Let’s face it; we have all had that five- pack of beer sitting around for months because we didn’t like the first one out of the pack.
For one price, a customer can pick their own six-pack or case of beers, as long as they are from a certain cooler, or designated area of the store. The same rules apply in which the bottles of wine are from specific vendors, or comparable price points.
The problem can arise if a customer starts to take bottles from other areas, or out of pre packed cases. When those cases or packs are tampered with, the store cannot sell the case as full. They might not be able to sell it as a case at all. They are then left with a shortage on that particular item, and might have to take a margin loss by selling the bottles cheaper in a mix pack.
Making a better designation between products can help employees readily identify a misplaced bottle, before the mixed pack is sold. Using anti theft devices on items not to be included in a mixed case is another good way to indicate that the customer has a more expensive bottle in the mix.

Shoplifting Sandwich- Retail Anti Theft Devices

Our latest shoplifter gave us, and our retail anti theft devices a run for our money.
This particular customer came into our store and used a wheelchair and our handheld shopping basket in his lap. He would go about his business and come to the register to pay for the items. No matter how diligent my cashiers were when they rang him up; the EAS alarm was set off when he left. We would recheck for retail anti theft devices, but could not find them. Not wanting to cause him any more inconvenience, we would let him go about his way. We knew the alarm was a way to prevent shoplifting, but we couldn’t see any indication of theft.
After about a month of this happening every time he came to shop, we started to get suspicious that something else was going on. We watched as he came in one day and realized that he had picked up two shopping baskets, not one.
At first we thought they had just stuck together, until we saw inside the baskets. As it turned out, he was hiding merchandise in one of the baskets, stacking the second one on top and adding more merchandise that he would pay for. When he left, he would leave with all of the extra merchandise sandwiched between our shopping baskets- unpaid for.
If it hadn’t been for the retail anti theft devices setting the alarms off, no telling how long it would have been before we caught on to his plan.
Visit the Loss Prevention Store for Alpha 2Alarm, Alpha 3Alarm, Alpha Fashion2, Alpha Jewel Lok, Alpha Nano Gate,  Alpha Shark Tag, Alpha Spider Wrap and other retail anti-theft devices from Alpha Security to use in conjunction with your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system that can help you prevent shoplifting in your business.

When Do You Think You Will Need Them? – Checkpoint Tags

Why should a retail business spend money on Checkpoint Tags, when they might not actually need them? The real question is why wouldn’t you want to spend money on Checkpoint Tags before it becomes a problem? If you wait until after you have a theft problem, you will end up spending more money to fix the problem than if you had initially invested in clothing security.
Some shoplifters are specifically looking for designer brands that they can resell easily on ebay, or in a flea market. Others are looking for personal usage of the merchandise. Whether they can’t afford, or simply don’t want to pay for new clothes, shoplifters often steal so they have something new to wear. Same thing goes for employees.
Ultimately, security tags on clothes are there for two reasons.
One is to deter shoplifters from taking clothing and other items from your stores. The next is to stop the theft that might be taking place already, that you are not aware of. Both of which can create a serious financial strain if left unnoticed.
In any case, Checkpoint Tags have been proven to reduce inventory shrink numbers by as much as 85 percent- more than what the cost of clothing security would be in most stores.

Employee Bag Checks- Employee Theft

The most basic employee bag check is one where all working employees have someone look in their personal bags and purses any time the employee leaves the store. This should include everyone, including managers. The thought behind it is that an employee is less likely to try and conceal stolen merchandise in their personal purse or bag when they know someone will be looking at the contents later.
A closing manager should have another employee look in their bag before they leave. It is both a deterrent for the managers and leading by example. Having a manager’s bag checked shows that no one is beyond the reach of this policy.
Some companies order a clear purse for employees to use while at work.  It is another way to deter employee theft. Everyone can see exactly what is inside the bag from any angle.
This may or may not work for your store. Some employees may feel like their privacy is violated because everyone, not just a manger, can see the employee’s personal items. These bags are also an additional expense that may cost you more than they are worth.
Along with just having an employee’s bag checked, purchases should also be checked against the receipt. Employees may be tempted to add additional items to their purchase after the transaction is done, thinking no one will question a bag of merchandise that they saw the employees pay for earlier in the shift.
Finally, if you have multiple doors to your building, make one door a designated employee entrance. It will make it easier for your managers to check all bags, and makes any violators looking to skip out on a bag check more obvious.

The Best Advice- Pre Employment Screening

Pre employment screening is highly recommended by the Small Business Administration. They realize that one of the most important factors in a small business’s success is its ability to hire and retain quality employees.
If a small business hires improperly, their chance of success are drastically reduce. A “bad” employee can do unending damage to a business.
When customer service is lacking, the company’s image is hurt. Customer’s stop coming in, and word of mouth takes care of any remaining customers who may have contemplated shopping with you.
A bad employee can be the root cause of such a change in your customer base.
A side step from bad customer service is bad employee morale. An employee that shows up late to work, doesn’t pull their weight, or disregards policy and procedure brings everyone down. Time is spent correcting their actions and playing damage control with the rest of the hard working employees. This is just one more disadvantage of a bad employee.
Finally, the most egregious of these employee infractions can pale in comparison to the damage an employee can do if they are stealing from you.
These employees can still turn away customers and fellow employees, in addition to causing financial disaster from cash theft, credit card fraud or inventory theft.
Pre employment screening and employee background checks help to weed out these potentially disastrous employees. The reports can contain vital information that might sway the hiring decision one way or another.
Because the Small Business Administration has seen the repeated advantages of using pre employment screening and employee background checks, they are strong proponents of using them.

Organized Retail Crime- Retail Theft Prevention

The point of organized retail crime is to take advantage of other retailer’s merchandise for his or her own benefit. These thieves do not care if they get their haul in one big job, or in multiple smaller ones. While major retailers have multiple locations and larger quantities of desirable merchandise making them attractive to organized retail crime, they also have more security and theft prevention resources available to help combat those thefts and inventory losses.
Smaller retailers, who may not have the most desirable selection of merchandise, may actually find themselves more prone to organized retail crime because their stores are more vulnerable without inventory security devices, or other EAS and camera systems.
National estimates are around 30 billion dollars worth of losses at the hands of Organized Retail Theft crimes. You heard that right, 30 BILLION dollars in losses.
That is massive. It is also indicative that these crimes are so widespread that they will affect every retailer, both large and small. The biggest take away is that organized retail crime will seek out the greatest path of least resistance.
If you have any merchandise at all that can be resold, or otherwise profited from, and you have minimal store security, you can bet that organized retail crime will be a factor in your store.

Seem Like Nice People, But… – Bottle Locks

One of the biggest comments that I have heard form customers about continuing to buy wine from the smaller liquor store (instead of in a grocery store) is the personalized attention they can get. Small box stores have an opportunity to win their customers over with their knowledge and their selection. They can focus on specific bottles that might not be carried by a big box. They also can provide more in depth product knowledge than your average grocery store employee can. All of that, of course, is contingent on using the bottle locks to make ensure when a customer comes in for a specific bottle, you still have it in stock.
If you are not using bottle locks like Alpha Security EASy Bottle, you may not have what the customer is looking for. If the customers are making dedicated trips to your liquor store to buy a particular item and then the item is unavailable, the customer is less likely to return. They will take their business to the big box store.
While having stellar product knowledge and helpful employees is an attractive benefit to shopping small specialty stores, it doesn’t excuse a lack of inventory. Ultimately, the customer needs to have the right product they are looking for.
I can’t tell you how many times I have gone somewhere and seen this type of situation. I always leave thinking they are nice people who have a genuine interest in helping me, but they are always out of stock. It’s only a matter of time before I, as a customer, quit coming back.

Long Term Business Relationship- Prevent Shoplifting

Looking through a local news report, I realized that I recognized one of the names of a suspect from a recent police sting operation. It was a habitual shoplifter that we had been trying to apprehend almost ten years ago.
This particular shoplifter was stealing from several locations and would sometime return the items without receipt- using multiple aliases to get around our refund system.
Eventually we did apprehend her and ban her from our stores in addition to having her prosecuted. I guess that didn’t mean much to her, since she has continued with her life of crime all of these years.
What we didn’t understand at the time was that this shoplifter we had assumed was just a small time problem, was actually a major part of a local crime ring. Her entire life was dedicated to stealing product from retailers to later resell to other local businesses.
She set herself up as a local distributor with lower than average pricing- making it an attractive low cost solution for these local businesses. Most of these businesses had no idea that they were actually buying stolen product. Many had been doing business with this woman for years without any indication of how she obtained her merchandise for distribution.

Can’t Keep Waiting- Clothing Security

I have spent countless hours watching shoplifters in the act of committing their crimes. One time I spent thirty minutes waiting and “cleaning” the fitting room, because there was a girl inside, who was going to steal a shirt, and kept checking to see if I left. We didn’t have much clothing security, so I knew that she was determined to take the shirt.
Just like every other store employee, at some point you have to stop watching in order to attend to another function of your job.
In this case, there was a hurt customer that I needed to attend to. So I left my potential suspect with the clothes that had no anti theft devices. It wasn’t long before I saw the girl leave. When I went to see if she left the clothes, all I found was a pile of empty hangers.
I knew that if we had used something, anything, even if it were just cheap tags or cheap labels for anti theft devices, this girl would not have left with our merchandise.
