Can It Be Defeated? – Bottle Lock

I found a video on line showing how to defeat bottle locks. I was skeptical at first, as most of the bottle security I have used is pretty fool proof. This time, the person was able to get the bottle lock off of their bottle of alcohol.
They claimed that they bought the bottle at a local supermarket, which forgot to remove the bottle lock at the time of purchase. Once they made it home and discovered the lock, they were unable to return to the store since it had closed down for the night.
In some ways, it was actually a fascinating process to watch. The person had found four or five different tools to use in the process, as well as needing at least to extra sets of hands. They reduced the video time to a few minutes, but had actually spent two hours working, and twisting, and prying bits and pieces off of the bottle lock. 
The video showed them using various tools to cut, bend, burn, and mangle the lock off. Eventually they did succeed, but readily admitted that it would have been less frustrating just to wait until the store opened back up the next day.
The end result is that while it is possible to remove a bottle lock without a detacher key, the effort involved to do so is a deterrent in and of itself.

Just Don’t Do It- Loss Prevention Seminars

When I was growing up, my parents were notorious for telling me not to do things. They never really explained why not, they just told me not to. I can attest to the fact that this was not the most effective way to teach me a lesson. Now, as an adult, when I conduct loss prevention seminars, I go beyond just saying, “don’t do it” and actually share information to make a difference.
When employee theft is happening in a store, or is about to happen, you have to be more prepared than having a sign that says, “shoplifting will be prosecuted”. You have to train your employees that you are aware of different methods, and tactics used in employee theft. You have to be able to train the other employees to be eyes and ears when you are not there.
By sharing information on employee theft during loss prevention seminars you have the information to help your employees make better decisions. Employees who see the heightened awareness level in a store are less likely to try and get away with employee theft. 
The stores that have a blanket statement, but no training or awareness, are more likely to have theft issues. Without a clear understanding of how deep the awareness and prevention goes in a store, the more likely employees are to abuse the system.

Social Media To The Rescue- Clothing Security

Social Media is a great way to market a small business. It is free service that quickly and effectively communicates with and entices potential customers to come shop with them. In some cases, social media can be used as a secondary form of clothing security.
A woman went to a local clothing boutique and stole a dress. Afterwards she wore the dress and posted a selfie with her not only wearing the dress but indicating that it was a new dress.
About the same time, the clothing boutique owner posted onto his social media that a dress had been stolen. He had a picture and a description of the dress that turned out to be a one of a kind, distinctly patterned dress.
Someone saw the posting from the local clothing boutique, and also saw the woman’s posting wearing the same dress and notified local law enforcement. The woman was subsequently arrested and prosecuted for the theft.
Because of the distinct look of the dress, it was easy for the law enforcement to make a positive identification. Had the dress not been as distinct, an arrest may not have happened. It was a lucky break for the clothing boutique owner, since he did not have any other clothing security in place to prevent this from happening.
