Why do Cheap Labels and Cheap Tags work?

When you are looking for retail security devices and resources, one of the first things you will come across are EAS Labels and Tags. They have been the industry standard in retail anti-theft devices for several reasons. When you are making a decision to invest in any retail security measure, it is best to know all the potential advantages of using that item.

One of the biggest advantages is recognition. Because almost every big box retailer uses EAS labels and tags for retail anti-shoplifting, the typical American shopper knows what they are. They are aware that the alarm will sound if the labels and tags aren’t properly removed.

Shoplifters are also keenly aware of how hard they are to defeat. Without the proper deactivators or detachers, it is virtually impossible to defeat discreetly.

The labels and tags are easy to use. Labels are simple to attach to merchandise and come in a wide variety of applications. Same thing goes for the EAS tags.

Cheap labels and cheap tags are available for the budget conscious. There is no need to break the bank while trying to stop shoplifting.

Make a wise decision and use the tools that will give you the most well rounded resource available.

It’s important to cover everything…

When you look at clothing security for your clothes, chances are good that you will probably not use retail anti-theft devices like cheap labels or cheap tags on every single piece of your inventory. Most retailers spend their time and efforts tagging over a certain price point, or product group, depending upon their shrink results and trends.

That doesn’t mean that you will never find someone stealing an item just because it did not have any tags. I had a recent shoplifting instance where the shoplifter stole a shirt that did not have a clothing security tag.

What was more important was that we missed this suspect stealing a pair of jeans also. When they went out the door with the merchandise, the alarm went off. It wasn’t until later on, in our office, that we discovered our oversight.

The shirt we saw him take did not have a sensor tag on it that would have set off the alarm. We realized that he had to have something else; another piece of our clothing that did have a tag on it.

Without those clothing security tags, we never would have recovered the stolen jeans.

Is the Sale Worth it?

Have you ever gone to a store because you saw an ad for an item that was such a great deal that you couldn’t resist not going to check it out?

Of course it always seems like this great sale is in the most inopportune place imaginable. I have convinced myself that driving for 30 min to the store across town to get that great bargain will be will worth the extra hassle. After I have gotten there, I have often been severely disappointed in the inferior quality of the item. Sometimes, you really do just get what you pay for.

Other times, I have been so impressed with the sale that I can’t help but to rave about what a great find it was! It makes the drive and the time invested all worthwhile.

Cheap labels and cheap tags are the same way. Sometimes you find out that they are really just a cheap foreign made product not worth the time. Others like the cheap labels and cheap tags from RBC Retail Security Solutions make it all worthwhile. They really are your diamond in the rough.

What it takes to win…

I don’t watch much television, but I do have a few TV shows that are a guilty pleasure. One in particular, is a reality series that tests the contestants in sometimes completely bizarre ways. Mentally and physically challenging, the contestants are often asked if they have what it takes to win the competition for fabulous prizes.

Retail clothing security is often no different. Your mind and body are often tasked with an endurance challenge to see who will win- you or the shoplifter. You enter the arena with your skills, your business acumen and the desire to eliminate shoplifting from your retail store.

Now all you need is some tricks of the trade. In this particular contest, what you need to assist you are some retail anti-theft devices. Even better, are cheap labels and cheap tags for you to use with your EAS system.  They will maximize the potential financial return on your investment.

Armed with these skills and tools, you will have a clear-cut advantage to reduce your losses from shoplifters. You can truly rest assured that you really do have what it takes to beat your competition.

Are you using a “Known Theft” Tracking System?

One of the best ways for any retail store to enhance their retail theft prevention program is to establish a “known theft” tracking system. A good known theft tracking system is where you keep track of items that you know for a fact have been stolen, either through apprehension or acute inventory monitoring. This system is essential to anti-shoplifting efforts. The greatest thing about known theft tracking is it shows you the areas that need to be watched. It will also let you know high priced, high theft items that should have checkpoint security tags that may not previously be integrated into your checkpoint security system.

The known theft tracking method I developed for my store’s retail theft prevention program is percentage based. I broke up the store into numerous blocked sections based on the type of product in that given area. Any time employees find known theft packaging they log it for area it originated, area found, and day of the week. On a weekly basis I go through the log and find percentages for each section previously stated. Knowing where your product is being taken from and concealed gives your retail theft prevention team an insurmountable advantage in their anti-shoplifting efforts.

Adding to the advantage of knowing where your theft is coming from, tracking known theft allows you to see the individual merchandise being stolen in a straight forward, organized manner. This allows you to take defensive steps in protecting your merchandise by protecting high theft items with checkpoint security tags. Using your known theft to enhance your checkpoint security system will in turn decrease your known theft and increase profits. Checkpoint systems can only truly be successful if the correct merchandise is protected. The only way to protect the right merchandise is to know what the correct merchandise is.

Why should you perform background checks?

Hiring new talent is a time consuming and trying process that takes it’s toll on  the resources of any company.  While it is a frustrating fact of doing business, it is an unfortunate requirement to ensure you obtain quality talent to add to your company.  The problem is you still cannot allow your company’s staffing needs to be figuratively blinded by glowing recommendations and ten-page resumes chocked full of exemplary qualifications.

In these dire economic times people have become desperate to find work and the unsavory practice of lying about qualifications or work history has become more commonplace than ever.  If you or your human resources department doesn’t require any sort of pre-employment screening  or employee background you may find your company hiring a virtual lemon of an employee.  Without performing an employee background check on your new receiving hire you might never know that they have never actually operated a forklift before which could lead to a potentially deadly accident and a huge liability.  If you don’t perform a pre-employment screening on that supposed cash room veteran you won’t find out that they were fired from their last job for stealing to pay for a gambling problem.

Background checks and Pre-Employment Screening can protect your company from potential problems before they start (literally).  The reason background checks were created in the first place was to ensure people are who they say they are.  As loss prevention professionals (or managers looking to protect company assets) we can use this resource to our advantage and reveal who is worth hiring and who is simply padding their resume.

Feeding the Strays…

Growing up, I used to see stray animals around the house fairly frequently. My older brother would always try to stop me, as I would run into the house to try to find some food to feed them. At the time I thought he was being mean, but I now understand why I shouldn’t feed the strays.

Shoplifters are like those stray animals. If they get what they are after the first time, they will come back over and over again until they are caught. Not only will they come back, but each time they will be bolder and hungrier for more.

I like to think of liquor bottle security like my older brother. It’s not there to make anyone feel bad, just there to offer a little extra protection. Liquor bottle security like liquor bottle locks make it easy to install and painless to use. No one has to go out of his or her way to kick a stray (or a shoplifter) to the curb. Liquor bottle locks are just a silent signal that they need to move on down the road, because no one is getting anything for free here.

I don’t try to feed stray animals anymore. Because of the billions of hours I have spent catching shoplifters, I can attest that it really is better to send them packing before they even try to steal. Liquor bottle security helps send them away.

The Cost Effective Alternative

Retailers worldwide have felt the impact of the global economic crisis and cost effective asset protection initiatives have been developed to meet the demand. By reducing the rising cost of clothing security, the retail community can pass these savings on to the consumer.  Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) or other high-end technology can become expensive because they require installation, upgrades and constant maintenance.  The asset protection community now understands that clothing security tags are efficient and can deter theft while maintaining a commitment to outstanding customer service.

Placing security tags on clothes requires minimal training and clothing security tags or a clothing alarm can be easily adapted to meet the current and future needs of a merchant.  Clothing security does not adversely impact the commitment to customer service and placing security tags on clothes or using a clothing alarm will not damage the merchandise.  Clothing security tags are a simple and cost effective method to reduce internal and external theft through deterrence.

If you want to reduce company shortage and maintain your commitment to customer service, placing security tags on clothes is an affordable asset protection initiative.  To purchase clothing security tags or a clothing alarm please visit the loss prevention store.

LP on a Tight Budget

Maybe you have a smaller store, or perhaps just don’t have a huge budget for retail anti theft devices.  If such is the case there is a simple method to scare off a large portion of your potential ‘opportunist’ shoplifters; deception.

All it takes it creating the illusion that you have a bigger network of retail anti theft devices than what you actually possess.  As I have said before, the most common way to prevent shoplifting is to use your tools as a deterrent first and foremost and focus your hands-on work for the tried and true criminals.

First and foremost, install a Checkpoint System or Alpha Nano Gate in the front of your store in the entry way. Next install retail anti-theft devices on very visible and/or high value merchandise.  Be they Spider Wraps or Jewel Loks just make sure everyone sees that they are there.

Finally, you want to remove as many blind spots in your store as possible, and maybe even put up a few false cameras.  While YOU will know that they are not real, the vast majority of potential shoplifters won’t and will avoid trying to pull anything while they suspect they are being watched.

It may not seem like a great way to spend your loss prevention budget, but as I said before, with just a few Nano Gates and the overall illusion that you are more secure than you actually are, you can trick thieves into leaving you alone before they even attempt anything.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store for Alpha 2Alarm, Alpha 3Alarm, Alpha Fashion2, Alpha Jewel Lok, Alpha Jewel Lock, Alpha Nano Gate,  Alpha Shark Tag, Alpha Spider Wrap and other retail anti-theft devices from Alpha Security to use in conjunction with your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system that can help you prevent shoplifting in your business.
