Retail Anti-Theft Devices and Correct Application

In my years of working in loss prevention I have seen some ridiculous misuses of company resources. Most of the time it involves company employees pulling dangerous or inane stunts with equipment that they think is funny. I have seen people riding pallet jacks like skateboards and driving scissor lifts through coffee shop drive-thrus. While such things fall within our realm of responsibility as liability issues they are actually not the worst misuse of equipment we come across.

I am speaking specifically about incorrect or improper application of retail anti -theft devices. I have seen retail anti-theft devices ineffectively attached to items (like putting cable locks on detachable or unsecured appendages), overused (putting a 2 Alarm AND Spider Wrap onto the same piece of product), or completely unused (EAS tags left in boxes instead of put on product).

There is a reason for every policy…

One of the biggest ‘no-no’s in most every company handbook I have ever read is that employees are not allowed to cohabitate, date, sleep with, or be related to any superiors or subordinates within their home store. When such an event occurs, it usually results in the transferring of one member of the party to another department or location if not outright termination. However I have noticed quite a few companies turning a blind eye to violations of this policy and all I can say is that it spells trouble.

In one of my stores I have five employees who are all inter-related through blood or marriage. Two are supervisors and directly oversee the work of the other three. The company is aware of this and has done nothing to correct the issue. I myself have scrutinized all their actions closely as their working together provides the whole group ample opportunity to commit internal theft. With the supervisors in play they could circumvent LP schedules and systems to allow for untold amounts of internal theft and without a carefully and discreetly implemented employee theft investigation I would be none the wiser to any wrongdoing.

As of this writing their situation has not bore any fruit of the employee theft tree but just because it hasn’t happened doesn’t mean it won’t happen. As with any other employee theft investigation, if the warning signs are there, no matter how long you may have to watch the subjects you are better off doing so than letting them go without being observed.

Did you make all the right investments?

Do you know how to respond to an alarm going off in your store? If you are using a Checkpoint system for your clothing security, you probably already do. The next question is do your employees know?

Chances are, they may not. There is an element of confrontation involved when you respond to an alarm. It is not the same type of confrontation that a salesperson selling clothes is using to approach a customer.

The ROI for Bottle Locks can’t be beat

The other day I went into my local drug store today to get a few quick things, and it turned out to be a not very quick trip after all. I was unfamiliar with the layout of the store and got a bit lost. I spent way too long walking up and down the aisles looking for what I needed.

Eventually, I did find the right aisle, and made it on my merry way. While I was wandering through the store I did stumble across a very small section of liquor. It was located at the far end of the store, and was barely a four-foot bay’s worth of product. I had to wonder if it was really even worth it to be there.

I did notice, however, that they did not use any bottle security. Ugh, I had to shake my head as I walked past. I couldn’t help thinking about what a recipe for disaster this store had conjured up.

Back corner of the store, no visible employees, no bottle security, hmm, it wouldn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what would happen next.

Don’t let the hard times deter you from protecting your bottom line!

Small business owners are having a tough time in this economy but this is no time to forget about protecting the bottom line. In fact, retail security is more important than ever because when times are tough people will do what ever tey need to get by, including shoplifting.

When I am hired to do lp consulting for small business owners I have an uphill battle to help them spend money to save money. Most of these businesses are retailers selling a variety of products. My first pitch is an EAS system. Unfortunately many of the EAS systems are expensive and fall outside the price range these small businesses can afford. As the economy started to recede and the trend of small businesses to spend less on retail security increased I realized I needed to conduct additional research to see if there were any other companies out there who were making affordable retail anti-theft devices.

Adding Insult to Injury…

Over the years of catching and apprehending shoplifters, I have found that there are other losses that might not be picked up on during the initial contact with the shoplifter.

Let me give you a few examples. When I worked security for a home improvement chain, it was not uncommon for a shoplifter to pick up a bucket and stuff it full of 18V drill batteries and then walk out the door. The cashiers never thought a shoplifter would steal a bucket, so they just assumed it was theirs.

When I worked clothing security, I saw the same thing with purses and book bags. These bags would be packed full of clothes that had not been paid for, yet the shoplifters would calmly walk out the door with not only the stolen clothes, but the stolen purse or bag.

Not only were these people robbing us blind but were even stealing their means of carry-out. That is what I call adding insult to injury.

Everyone needs a background check, even seasonal help!

We respond to whatever is loudest, most pressing, and sometimes just the most irritating situation in front of us. All too often, it is a customer that is the squeaky wheel monopolizing our time.
