Unless it’s you – Checkpoint Security tags

Best Wishes and Good Luck – Alpha Security

I read an article in a loss prevention trade magazine that was talking about one of the head honchos of the company Alpha Security is retiring. He was responsible for many of the new retail anti-theft devices that Alpha Security currently is using with enormous amounts of success.

This conveys that, as a company, Alpha Security values people and ideas, not just profits. It shows in their products. They are not designed to break the banks of small business owners. These retail anti-theft devices are designed to give small business owners a fighting shot at staying in business and not going down because they were the victims of shoplifters.

When so many companies are dead set on profits above all, it was heartwarming to see a story about more than just record setting profits. Seeing someone with such accolades being remembered for his personality and commitment to prevent shoplifting speaks volumes.

His peers all seemed to think he was a great guy, quiet and unassuming always looking for the next great innovation. He wanted to provide a valuable service to the industry. We should all wish him luck and best wishes in his retirement.

Misplaced Trust – Employee Theft

I ran a store that did a thriving mail order business. It was a great way to capture sales from customers not only in the area, but also some of the tourist shoppers as well. It was a little too late when I found out that one of my employees was committing employee theft through our postal process.

The employee that was running the mail orders had quit to find a job somewhere else. He had gone out with one of my other employees and had confided in them how much product he had taken and how easy it was to get away with it.

He had been shipping orders out to his home address and to the addresses of his friends. These orders were never paid for. Because we didn’t do an audit on 100% of the packages, his internal theft was undetected.

He would hold his personal packages behind until the mailman was about to come by. Then he would slip his packages in with everything else. There was no record of the packages, and there was only a slight influx in postage.

I keep kicking myself thinking that there should have been some glaring red flag telling me that there was an issue. Unfortunately, he was smarter than I was (or my policies). It was a matter of misplaced trust. He was going to find a way to steal regardless of what I did, or what a random employee theft investigation would have shown up.

Once Upon A Time- Clothing Security

When I first began my retail career many years ago, I was introduced to the idea of clothing security in the shoe department. As I walked through the stock room, you could see the carnage of old clothing security tags strewn about; missing pieces, blue ink splatter on the ground. It was not a pretty sight. Even worse, the reason we were there to begin with was from the number of customer complaints because the Checkpoint tags had been put on the shoes with the bulky part on the inside. Our customers could not try the shoes on without the tags being removed first. This was not the deterrent our store was looking for. This was not supposed to be a deterrent to our paying customers.

The New House Rule – A tale of Loss Prevention Training downfalls

If employee theft and shoplifting methodology were all that Loss Prevention Training was about, there would be no use for trainers. If you have ever taken Loss Prevention Seminars, you know differently.

I have a newfound love of cooking and baking. While it is a pastime I have always enjoyed, my family is not always better off for my new hobby. In fact, because of my hobby, we have a standing rule at the house that if I make anything inedible, we order out for pizza. No questions asked, and no ones feelings get hurt. There have definitely been several instances where the food was not anywhere close to the desired result.

Since I find most of the recipes online, it ends up being trial and error to figure most of them out. Written directions can often be misinterpreted. Without a basis to see the author’s meaning and techniques, directions can end up being inaccurate as a result.

The recipes that are more accurate the first time around are the concoctions that have a video attached. It is infinitely easier to be successful when you can see and have someone walk you step by step through a process, instead of trying to follow written directions with no one to assist you.

Reading a loss prevention manual, and going through a loss prevention workshop are two completely different ways of learning. A book can only take you so far. Having someone in front of you teaching you through a loss prevention workshop will greatly increase your chances of being successful.

Don’t Be The One To Get Schooled – Employee Background Checks

I used to look at job applications and marvel at the lack of education for these potential candidates. I used to think that maybe it was the area, or maybe it was because of the industry. As time went on, I started to notice how many more applicants seemed to not only have better educational backgrounds but also much higher degrees than what the job would require. The news reports at the height of our recession routinely would show master’s degree job hunters looking at jobs like waiting tables and retail stockers because they had been laid off and no one was hiring. Where is My Crystal Ball When I Really Need It? – Retail theft Prevention

How do you stop shoplifting when the shoplifter doesn’t know that they are going to steal? When opportunists are presented with the opportunity to steal they decide to take it. Well the reality is that retail theft prevention really can stop shoplifting by opportunist shoplifters.

A Side Business – Bottle Locks

I had been asked to come in to conduct an investigation at a neighborhood liquor store. They had suddenly been experiencing an influx in bottle shortages that they could not explain. It was those losses that prompted the investigation. Had the employees kept a better eye on the merchandise, the losses never would have happened, and no telling how long their new business would have gone unnoticed.
