Safety First – Checkpoint Tags

Many years ago, a famous actress was arrested stealing clothes from a high dollar retailer. When she was apprehended, there was a cut on her finger. While that little detail might not mean anything to the common observer, to anyone in clothing security, it means all the difference in the world.

Shots All Around – Bottle Security

It was a Friday night and business was booming. There were people coming in to party and have a good time, the alcohol was being sold, and amazing profit was being made. All seemed like a successful Friday night in the bar, except for one minor detail – this was not a bar. This was happening in a liquor store with no bottle security.

It was only after a major investigation that resulted in several employees being terminated that we uncovered what was going on. This liquor store had a few employees working a late shift on the weekends that decided they needed to make more money. One of them came up with the great idea that they would start selling individual shots to customers. Since there was no bottle security, it was easy to take a handful of bottles to sell from.

Pretty soon word was out in the community. People were stopping by the liquor store on the weekends like it was the neighborhood bar. We started noticing losses in the inventory, not because of the bottles the shots were being sold out of (those had actually been paid for by the employees). It was from the customers who were coming in to drink. Bring it out of the red – via a Loss Prevention Seminar

If you have a failing business, call an expert! One of my favorite nights of TV watching is oddly enough on a cooking channel. They have a series of shows dedicated to failing restaurants. I think I like the shows because most of the story lines are very similar to what I see in the retail world. Many business owners have to deal with shoplifting and other loss prevention related topics.

Personal Expertise? – Background Check Experts

I am quite confident in my abilities and skills that have come from years of experience; however, I am not an expert in everything. I am also quite confident to know when I need to stop and ask for help. One of those areas is employee background checks.

A Visible Dissuasion – Checkpoint Systems

Anti-shoplifting takes many forms. There are so many different reasons why someone steals in the first place. A study done by one of the major credit card companies showed that shoplifting is secondary only to going out to eat as a form of personal reward.

At some point, the need for the lift has to be significantly reduced through the probability (not just a possibility) of getting caught. If you cannot provide enough incentive to NOT steal, the internal need to steal will overcome a potentially honest shopper. It’s a Special Occasion – Alpha Shark Tag

The Alpha Shark Tag differs from most retail anti theft devices that are designed strictly to prevent shoplifting.

What Are Your Resources? – Background Check Experts

It does not make a difference if you are conducting background checks for a new employee or a current one. The question remains the same – what are your resources compared to those of background check experts?

I would start by asking myself what is the time frame that I am working under? The next question I would need to ask is what are the other commitments that I have for that same time frame?

If you are like most of us, we rarely are tasked with a single item at a time. There are ongoing issues to be dealt with, reports to run or create, stores to operate and sell in… You get the idea.

So I will ask again. What is the time frame that I am working under? The answer is that it is a very slim time frame. I probably don’t have a lot of extra time to run background checks twice. I am also probably only going to skim the surface of background checks. As long as nothing completely egregious shows up, I will be satisfied.

Now let’s ask those same questions of background check experts. How much time do they have to run those same checks? Do they have the time and or other resources to run a more in depth check? Can they run background check a second time if there is an error, or if something didn’t show up properly?

I would safely answer yes to those questions.

He wore what? – Clothing Security Tags

One of my first experiences with a shoplifter was a man who came into the department store where I worked. He started looking at hoodies, which was not anything suspicious. What I did find suspicious was when he started looking for the clothing security tags.

Not all of our hoodies had clothing security tags; so it didn’t take him long to find one without any clothing security. He took the jacket off the hanger and went into a fitting room. When he came back out mere seconds later, he was wearing the hoodie. I first tried calling someone in the menswear department to get them to offer customer service, but it was too late. The man had already started to head toward the exit door.

Without a Checkpoint tag, I knew the clothing alarm would not go off and alert any cashiers or managers to this man’s actions. Because I was too far away, I couldn’t get across the store in time. The man had exited the store and sped off in a car waiting for him in the parking lot.

Security tags on clothes would have helped us prevent this theft. Without one, none of the employees could readily identify the hoodie as one of ours that had not been paid for.

What’s on your Program – Loss Prevention Workshop

Who doesn’t want to have fun while they learn? No one is really interested in sitting in a conference room for hours listening to some random guy speak. Just because I think attending a Loss Prevention Workshop is the most fascinating thing on the planet, doesn’t mean that everyone else does too. We need to be able to enjoy our education in whatever form it might take. It took a two year old to really make me appreciate that simple fact of adulthood.

My two year old has recently started taking an interest in cartoons; both on the computer and on the TV. As a new parent, I was totally against it at first. My child simply should not be in front of anything as bad as a TV, for whatever reason. After looking at what programming is available to her I started to change my mind, especially after seeing so many successful Loss prevention workshops.

While at first it might seem like that is a completely obscure reference point, Let me take a moment to explain. The shows that my daughter is most drawn to are ones that she was learning from. There were colors and numbers, songs to sing and things to learn about. This was, in essence, a way to begin to give her the world – begin her love of learning. She needs to be exposed to the things the world has created and has to offer. And she needs to have fun while learning. Those successful loss prevention workshops I mentioned earlier- They were successful because they were fun and educational too!
