Making Friends – Loss Prevention Workshop

While you can never find it on a syllabus or meeting agenda, making contacts is  one of my favorite parts of attending a loss prevention workshop.

Attending loss prevention seminars provides an opportunity to have an open conversation on this topic. If you have worked retail for any span of time, you will most likely come across a shoplifter or an employee theft situation. Even if you didn’t see the shoplifter, you were probably aware of their presence in your store at some point.

Loss prevention training gives you a chance to talk about your experiences with theft. How you handled it, maybe something that you started that worked, and maybe something that didn’t work.

Other attendees have a chance to regale their stories as well. That’s one of the best parts of a workshop.  The informal training allows you to learn from each other’s hands on experiences. I have always felt that most attendees learn more from these impromptu discussions better than a long drawn out training forum.

There is no need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to loss prevention. Most of the tactics used by or to prevent shoplifters are pretty universal. It is just a matter of being aware of them and knowing how to apply them to your store.

Everyone Else Is Doing It – Bottle Security

Not everyone wants to follow the pack, but sometimes it’s nice to understand what benefit other companies are getting by using certain bottle security.

Take the EASy Bottle brand of bottle locks, for example. There are the proactive benefits that come from using a bottle lock, plus the benefits that come from using the Alpha Security brand.

The two biggest advantages of using bottle locks is that they discourage both theft and in store sampling. That means you can keep your product directly on the shelf to increase sales and decrease the need for employees to constantly handle the merchandise.

You are also creating a work environment that is safe for your customers and employees. When you decrease the frequency of shoplifting incidents, you are eliminating the criminal element in your stores. If shoplifters are frequently victimizing you, you will eventually put your store at risk for bigger incidents of theft – like employee theft or robberies. Bottle security will help eliminate the downward spiral of incidents in your stores.

The product denial benefits of a bottle lock will reduce in store sampling – that damages your bottles and prevents you from being able to sell the bottle. It also helps reduce the likelihood of underage drinking, as minors will not be able to sneak some drinks from your liquor bottles.

Take the Advantage – Background Checks

For most small businesses, employee background checks are a luxury that they do not have. Small business owners and managers usually have to manually review a multitude of paper applications.

The plus side is that you might end up with a paper resume with the application. I personally feel that you can see into an applicant’s personality better on a paper resume than through an online, standardized application.

Electronic resumes usually are amended to the website’s fonts and formatting. By seeing a paper resume, you know that everything was hand made by the applicant. This gives an insight into your applicant that cannot be tracked through an electronic employee background check.

You get to see more of their personality. Is the resume formal or personable? What type of paper was it printed out on- stationary or plain typing paper? How about a bright neon color paper with a crazy hard to read font? Did they bother to spell check and proof read their writing?

This type of pre-employment screening shows how well they take care of their things- and eventually yours. If an applicant comes in with a folder or binder that is protecting their resume, you can reasonably assume that they understand the difference between being professional and showing up with a crumpled or folded resume. That professionalism is insight into how they function.

No employee background checks can replicate that kind of advantage as a potential employer.

Loosy Goosy – Employee Theft Investigation

I recently concluded an internal theft case that revolved around several employees and an unknown customer. I had been researching an unrelated transaction when I stumbled across a customer that seemed up to no good.

I noticed a customer who had been in and out of the store several times during the day. I thought he might have been a shoplifter at first because I never saw him buy anything. Over and over again, I saw the man coming up to the register. He would speak with the employees, who would give him a few loose cigarettes out of a pack that was mostly hidden by the registers. Sometimes the man would hand over cash or sometimes it was something in a bag that I could not identify.

I then suspected that this was internal theft of our cigarettes.  I went out and did a physical count of the cigarettes in question and compared it to what our inventory should have been. We were several cartons short.

As it turned out, the employees were selling loose cigarettes to this man, who in turn, would sell the cigarettes (and other store merchandise) in the parking lot – splitting the cash with the employees. The cigarettes were, of course, stolen from our inventory. The employee theft investigation turned up several thousand dollars worth of losses.

We also figured out that the manager had been covering up the cigarette shortages in her store. While she was not a part of the employee theft, she was terminated for falsification of company documents and poor job performance.

Cannon Ball! – Stop Shoplifting

For many retailers, the Cruise season is here! For those who don’t know, the term cruise season is the more common term for the dead of winter influx of swimsuits hitting the shelves. This change in merchandise needs to bring a change in our anti shoplifting tactics.

Swimsuits are hard to control. Small and easy to conceal, they are all too often a high dollar item just begging to be taken. It is common that they are stolen in a fitting room. Sometimes they are simply concealed in a purse or pocket on the sales floor. So what’s a progressive retailer to do? Well, look no further than Checkpoint systems.

Chances are you already have a Checkpoint Security System in place that uses the basic soft labels or hard tags. That means you already have a step in the right direction for retail theft prevention. The simple applications of anti shoplifting devices are sure to make the right splash in your swimwear sales this year!

I frequently see retailers avoiding the use of hard tags because they are afraid they will damage the stretchy material of the suit. The Lycra easily snags on the metal pins.

There are other alternatives to the traditional pin tags that do not damage the material. They make sure your retail theft prevention doesn’t do a cannonball this year.

Watch and Learn – Security Tags on Clothes

I was watching a suspected shoplifter over the weekend. She knew what to look for, as far as clothing security tags go. It told me that either she had done this before, or she had someone telling her how to decide which clothes to steal.

She was checking a selection of clothing for Checkpoint Tags. She would go through every pair of jeans, for example, and see if she could find a pair without a tag on them.

She would then remove the clothing item from its rack or table, proceed to a remote corner of the store, and shove it into her backpack. She would then scout out the area to see if anyone was visibly watching her. If no one else was in the area, she would go back to the clothing area and start looking through a new section of merchandise for security tags on clothes.

She repeated this process several times, until her backpack was almost bulging at the seam. When she could fit no more in, she would make her way to the exit. Since we were watching, we were able to make the apprehension. Unfortunately, after reviewing more video from the day, we realized that she had been in the store at least three other times. There’s no way to tell how much we lost in those stuffed bags of merchandise because our clothing security was not 100%.

After Prom – Alpha Shark Tag

If your local school hasn’t had their Prom yet, they probably will soon. As with every major dress event, it is not uncommon to see an influx of returns of special event clothing that has probably been worn – once. Now is the best time to take a look at the Alpha Security Alpha Shark Tag.

The Alpha Shark Tag is different from most of the traditional retail anti-theft devices that are designed strictly to prevent shoplifting.

This is a retail anti-theft device that is more like an anti-profit loss device.

This is a plastic tag that attaches to the garment. It is in an obvious place on the clothes that makes it unattractive to be worn, especially in a formal setting such as a dance. It is also in a place that would be had to hide or cover up with a wrap or jacket.

When the clothing is purchased, the tag stays on the clothes- again, different than retail anti-theft devices that are removed at the point of purchase. The sales person explains that the item being purchased can be returned as long as the Alpha Shark Tag is left on. If the tag is cut off, you can easily deny the refund- and any potential one-time uses of your merchandise.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store for Alpha 2Alarm, Alpha 3Alarm, Alpha Fashion2, Alpha Jewel Lok, Alpha Nano Gate,  Alpha Shark Tag, Alpha Spider Wrap and other retail anti-theft devices from Alpha Security to use in conjunction with your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system that can help you prevent shoplifting in your business.

Go Ahead, Have Some Fun – Loss Prevention Seminar

Let’s face it, lectures are boring- especially ones that have to be conducted by someone else’s department. For many store employees that are faced with the task of attending loss prevention seminars, they might feel like they are in for an extremely boring presentation about information that either doesn’t apply to them, or have a practical use for.

In some cases, that might be true. There are many presenters for loss prevention training that drone on incessantly about building employee theft cases or how to stop shoplifting. Neither of which may apply to your average store employee.

A good presenter, however, will give ways to spot shoplifting, and how customer service can prevent shoplifting. A good loss prevention workshop will also give ways to prevent employee theft before it happens through operational controls and awareness.

By making the subject matter relevant to the audience, your employees are more likely to walk away from the presentation with useful knowledge that they can actually apply.

There is nothing worse than sitting through a training program and discounting the presentation as it is going on. I think we have all been there, hoping to find a way to take a suggested method and apply it, all the while knowing that the criteria or resources do not apply to your specific situation.

Good For You – Loss Prevention Seminars

Attending loss prevention seminars is a good business decision that every manager or owner should make at some point in his or her career. It will provide valuable insight into ways you can reduce your losses. When you attend good loss prevention training, it is hard to know who will walk away with more – you or your employees. They will also give you a heads up on ways that both employee theft and shoplifting can occur.

I would encourage you to take your complete staff with you to a loss prevention workshop so they can benefit from the same information that you are getting. It will help their awareness of common losses that can occur in a retail setting.

It will be nice for you after the training is completed because you will have an open line of communication with your employees. By discussing some of the things you learned with your employees, they may feel more open about coming to you with concerns they have, or things that they have seen. Some of the best information I have received about losses has come directly from my employees.

These might be things like shoplifting or employee theft that they were uncomfortable talking to you about before. These open lines of communication provide you with additional eyes and ears on the pulse of your business.

After The Fact – EASy Bottle

I was asked recently to do a consultation for a liquor store. They were showing all  the typical signs of theft. Their profits were starting to decrease as their inventory costs were going up inexplicably. They noticed a change in the customers that were coming in, but the sales never seemed to justify their presence. They had very basic liquor bottle security, to say the least.

At the end of my consultation, we had determined that the store had a case of employee theft. Two employees were passing bottles to their friends and family, a buy one get five free sort of deal. It was several thousands of dollars worth of inventory gone.

I had a conversation with the owner about what comes next. First they need to be convicted in a court. That could take months. Then they would have to arrange a payment schedule for restitution. It is very unlikely the employee is just going to write a check for the total amount. Keep in mind, if they serve time, they are not employed and have no way to pay the money back.

We took a closer look at how his liquor bottle security could be improved. One of the easiest solutions we had was to use the Alpha Security EASy Bottle for his high dollar liquors. The bottle locks can only be taken off by the manager on duty who has validated the sale actually took place.
