Using Integrity Tests to Enhance Employee Theft Investigations

There are numerous instances in business when it is necessary to perform the employee theft investigation.  The fact is – employees steal … a lot!! – this is the distressing reality. Research reveals internal theft (also called employee theft) accounts for 50-70% of retail shrink.

One of the most difficult aspects of investigating employees is the trust factor – we want to trust our employees.  It is especially troublesome to accept that one or more employees are stealing from you. Conducting an employee theft investigation is imperative when money and merchandise start missing in order to uncover internal theft.

There are several things to do during the employee theft investigation.  Reviewing reports is first on the agenda.  Many losses can be solved by tracking cash over and cash shorts, reviewing refund and void trends, and researching ordering and inventory change histories.

Cameras are great instruments for catching and verifying employee theft. We turn to cameras if reviewing reports does not produce results.  Either by standard cameras on the sales floor or covert cameras in offices, cameras can indisputably verify the identity of the thief.

Unfortunately, there are times when none of these methods work.  I have found myself at wits end on several occasions with strong suspicion of an employee, but no actual proof.  This is where an Integrity Shop can be of great benefit.

The employer can create a circumstance or set of circumstances providing an employee the opportunity to “do the right thing” in order to assess a suspected employee’s integrity; thus demonstrating integrity or lack thereof.

One may put extra money into the till or drop a gift card by the register and then watch cameras to see what that employee does with the money or gift card.  The employee should turn in the money or gift card since it does not belong to him or her. The employee proves whether he or she can be trusted by what they choose to do with the money or card.

If the employee keeps the money or card, they have given the employer the leverage needed when confronting the dishonesty as well as the other shortages in their work station.

A One-Two Punch – Bottle Locks

Using bottle locks can give you a one-two punch for your return on investment. The careful use of existing payroll combined with the sleek appearance of the bottle locks ensure you get the biggest bang for your buck.

While this is not an all-inclusive list of the features that are included in the locks, it is a great way to learn that this is a premium product.

Since there is no lengthy training involved, your return on investment isn’t diluted from spending countless payroll hours teaching your employees how to use bottle locks. Your payroll is also saved by not needing to have an employee retrieve every single bottle of premium liquor because they are locked up in a case somewhere.

Using the Crystal Guarde by Alpha Security has built in benefits from its visual appearance also. The clear top allows the tax ID stamp to be visible at all times. This saves your employees time if needing to show the stamp to auditors, and potentially facing fines for non-compliance.

The word “alarm” is clearly written on the bottle locks so shoplifters have a better clue that the bottles are being protected from theft and sampling. The smaller design makes it easier to maximize shelf displays and product placement. The clear top is also less visually distracting. You see more of the product than you do the bottle locks when you scan across the store.

Ask The Right Questions – Pre Employment Screening

My husband received an application for a high level position in one of his stores. The applicant seemed qualified on paper, so my husband did a little pre-employment screening via a phone interview with him. It was only after asking some questions, did it come out that this applicant may have worked under one of my friends supervision at a previous job.

When my husband asked me if she might know him, I actually said yes, and that I was also one of his previous supervisors and I could speak to the position he held at my place of employment. My friend also confirmed his position with her company.

The interesting thing was that this applicant worked in a very different capacity at both of our companies than the job he was applying for. Most likely, this was not a simple oversight on his application. This was an intentional omission in the hopes of avoiding detection during reference checks or other pre-employment screening.

This is unfortunately not uncommon – an applicant omitting details of their work history to seem like they have more relevant experience than what they really do. It was only by chance that my husband asked the right questions to get more information. Had he only relied on the information provided on the application, he would have missed some critical information he needed to make an informed decision.

Overcomplicated and Ineffective – Retail Theft Prevention

Loss prevention is often thought of as a very difficult and complex set of processes or policies that detract from an employee’s time to get their “real” work done. I see too many employees or managers who are over thinking their retail theft prevention strategies and the end result is that their plans often are not followed through or successful.

By simplifying an action plan, you can give that plan a better shot of being successfully implemented and used. I wonder how many of them would have been more successful had we simplified them down to three simple steps.

Think about a store trying to add Checkpoint systems into a store. If you can add these anti-shoplifting tags onto merchandise using three steps, don’t you think it would be more impactful to the employees to remember three steps instead of a complex twenty-step process?

  • Step one decides which merchandise needs help to stop shoplifting.
  • Step two puts the retail theft prevention products on that merchandise.
  • Step three moves the now-tagged merchandise back onto the sales floor to be sold.

By reducing the number of steps, you have a better chance of them working and ultimately to stop shoplifting from happening inside your store.

Plausible Deniability – Security Tags On Clothes

More experienced clothing alarm goes off. Since there is not a visual presence of any security tags on clothes, a responding employee must be extremely careful to not wrongfully accuse a customer of stealing.

Compare this scenario to a shoplifter carrying merchandise, or holding a bulging purse. The visual cue is present that there might be stolen product, which makes it much less discrete for a shoplifter leaving the store.

Concealing merchandise is about plausibly deniability. Even if the alarm responds to the concealed security tags on clothes, a shoplifter who is seen empty handed can blame the clothing alarm on something else. They can believably deny their attempt to shoplift.

When the shoplifters include the use of boosters or bolsters to conceal stolen items, they greatly increase their chance for success.

Boosters can include false casts on arms and legs. There are ways to add extra hidden pockets to an already puffy coat. Sometimes it is as simple as a booster under a woman’s dress that looks like a pregnancy belly, but is really a hollow shell designed to have stolen clothing stuffed inside of it.

An Easy Upgrade – Alpha Nano Gate

Your store probably has a basic EAS system installed already. You probably use antennas at the entry and exit doors and other retail anti-theft devices on your merchandise. Depending on your existing system, you might even have Alpha 3 Alarm products to prevent shoplifting.

Over time thieves (shoplifters or employees) will start to get creative in how they steal from your store. They might try to take merchandise into the restrooms or out of the back stock room.  Eventually, it is no longer as simple as protecting your main exit doors. You will need to find other tools or retail anti-theft devices to maintain or improve upon your current levels of inventory loss.

Since you already use Alpha 3 alarm to reduce theft it is easy to expand out and start using the Alpha Nano Gate to prevent losses at these alternative exit points.

The small design is the perfect fit for back exits and restrooms. The Alpha Security Alpha Nano Gate has a battery backup that prevents the system from being tampered with. That point is important for these areas since these back rooms are generally not monitored and have a low traffic flow. You wouldn’t want a product to be easily defeated in a high theft area.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store for Alpha 2Alarm, Alpha 3Alarm, Alpha Fashion2, Alpha Jewel Lok, Alpha Nano Gate,  Alpha Shark Tag, Alpha Spider Wrap and other retail anti-theft devices from Alpha Security to use in conjunction with your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system that can help you prevent shoplifting in your business.

Fit the Bill – Loss Prevention Seminars

They say that those that can – Do, and those that can’t- Teach.  Sayings like that must have been true at some point to have sustained the momentum to keep the saying alive; however, it isn’t always the case. Take these loss prevention seminars for example. Bill spent years doing, so now he can take his experiences and teach you.

In my experience, to be a successful trainer, you have to spend time honing your skills and your education. It helps you become an expert in your subject matter. It also helps you to comprehensively answer the questions that might arise during a Loss Prevention Workshop.

How would you expect someone to be able to answer questions on how to interview an employee theft case if they had never conducted an interview before? They would not be able to give you tips on getting the most beneficial information from that employee. They might also not know that there are certain safety precautions that should be in place in your office before you conduct the interview.

If it were not for the experience a full career in Loss prevention has provided, you would not be getting such a complete education during your loss prevention training course from someone like Bill.

One of Three Options – Bottle Locks

There are three basic categories that bottle locks can be placed into. Each has advantages based on the level of liquor bottle security you want to provide.

The most basic of bottle locks is the metal bottle wrap. It is just a simple metal band that wraps around the neck of a bottle. While it does not provide product denial, it does provide a visual deterrent against shoplifting. The biggest advantage is that the wrap will not damage any outside coverings. This is important for champagne bottles that have the metal/ foil covering over the cork.

Next is the Alpha Security Crystal Guarde. This lock has a smaller profile and a sleeker look. It is perfect for a more high-end display. The smaller design also makes it easier to maximize shelf quantities while providing liquor bottle security that detracts shoplifters and prevents unauthorized sampling.

Lastly is the basic bottle cap. Tough, durable and reliable, this bottle lock is attached directly on the top of the bottle. It provides product denial, as a shoplifter or underage drinker cannot remove the cap of the liquor bottle to sample the contents inside.

The bottle locks are designed to be reused. When a bottle is sold, the cashier removes the bottle lock and places it to the side. These locks are then taken to the next shipment of liquor bottles and applied before the bottles are placed on the retail shelves.

Are Employees Stealing Your Profits? – Employee Theft

The most sought after item that dishonest employees like to steal is cash. Unlike merchandise, cash can be used anywhere and cash is often the easiest item to steal.  It is small and easily hidden, employees handle it all day, and cash has no sensor tags applied.

Do you know if internal theft of cash is taking place at your business?  What are you doing to uncover this distinctively challenging form of employee theft and put an end to it?

There are a variety of situations and circumstances in which employee theft, involving cash, is likely to occur.  There are also a number of considerations when conducting the employee theft investigation around these losses.

The most uncomplicated scheme is simply taking money directly from the drawer.  The effect of this style of internal theft is blatantly obvious the next day when the accounting department discloses that money is missing from the drawer.

It is most effective to begin the investigation by reviewing “No Sale” functions when conducting an employee theft investigation.  Most associates do not take cash during an actual transaction because of the witnesses (i.e. the customer) present.

Instead, the employee waits until it appears that no one is observing to conduct a “No Sale” function, and then pockets the cash.  The employee wrongly believes that the absence of witnesses enables him to hide his or her actions.  In reality this type of theft is usually quite simple to pinpoint.

Another scheme to take cash is conducting voids.  This is more difficult to apprehend, but it can be accomplished with due diligence. The dishonest associate will void a transaction and take the cash in this particular form of employee theft sting.  Because the register now assumes the sale did not happen, it will then not show short since the cash “should not have been there” according to the register.

Prevention and discovery requires that the employer routinely watch for associates conducting a lot of voids followed by “No Sales”.  Since they voided the transaction the cashier has to use the “No Sale” function to open the drawer and make change for the customer.

The employer can also pull random voids and review the video to see if the merchandise stays in the store or, if in fact, the customer takes it out of the store.  The cashier is stealing from you if the customer takes the item out of the store.

There is no easy solution for internal theft; however, a thorough employee theft investigation helps eliminate problems and prevent future loss.

Leave It In Their Hands: Pre-Employment Screening

We have seen in some of the more tragic recent events, major companies whose pre-employment screening has been outsourced and ended up missing something big.

So why spend the money and take the risk of outsourcing your employee background checks? There is a lot of time and money involved in hiring a Background Check Company to conduct these employee background checks.

Simply put, if the background check company can’t always find everything, what makes you think you can do better? I am much more willing to let the experts spend the time to be as complete as possible because I know that I have a better chance of missing something than they would.

Do you have their resources, time or their technology to more thoroughly conduct these employee background checks? I know that I don’t, and realistically you probably don’t either. This is not a testament about how an outsourced background check company can fail. Rather this is a realistic look at how hard it really is to conduct thorough pre-employment screening.

I am much more willing to let the experts spend the time to be as complete as possible because I know that I have a better chance of missing something than they would.

These are the people who have nothing to do in their day but to follow up on leads, contact out of county or state jurisdictions and run traces on work and address histories. I am happy to let the experts take over such a difficult task than to try and muddle through it on my own.
