Lack of Funds- Clothing Security Tags

Clothing security tags are an effective deterrent against two groups of shoplifters that are not willing to risk too much effort, for fear of getting caught.
When times are good and parents have more disposable income, they are more willing to spend money on name brand items of clothing. As times get harder and money is tighter, the same drive to purchase these items decreases.
The flip side is that when a parent’s cash runs short, teens and tweens (who rely on their parents for spending cash) are left without. That means the designer jeans and fashionable accessories are not as easy to come by.
Just because there is a decrease in the income to buy the clothing, doesn’t mean there is a decrease in desire for the clothing. That means it is still important to maintain security tags on clothes.
What we end up seeing is a combination of one of two events. Well meaning parents spend what little income they can on their kids. They feel that they must be taken care of before the parent’s own needs. Because they still have their own list of wants that they are unable to afford, these parents might turn to theft to supplement their own wants.
The kids are in a similar boat. Because they do not have the extra income to buy these items, they might decide to make an attempt at theft. If they do not see any clothing security, they are more apt to steal than if there is something (like checkpoint tags) standing in their way.

Maintain Their Life Style- Internal Theft

Stealing fragrance and cosmetic items is a way to maintain, or enhance, a life style while decreasing out of pocket expenses. It was not uncommon for me to resolve internal theft where employees sought out employment at stores that carried their preferred brand of cosmetics just so they would have unending access to them.
Since one of the more common theft items for many retailers is fragrance and cosmetics, it is important to be diligent in protecting that inventory. Additionally, the internal theft of these items that can create a bigger financial loss than through shoplifters.
Let’s take a look at why these items are taken. We can begin with the price- for most major fragrance labels, even a small one-ounce bottle can fetch close to fifty dollars. Even though cosmetics can be a low price point, ask any woman how many different products they use.
It can be an overwhelming amount of different items of makeup, each with a five to ten dollar price- for the moderate drugstore brands. Higher end products can increase in price exponentially depending on the designer and type of product.
Beyond the initial price, these are consumable items. They need to be replenished with regularity ranging from once a month to once every four to six months. If you have employees that regularly wear or use these beauty items, they can potentially incur hundreds to thousands of dollars worth of product in a year’s time.

Looking Past the Clothes on the Rack- Retail Theft Devices

When you only think of retail theft devices for clothes, you may be surprised at the impact it makes to your bottom line. Clothing is not the only items that need protection using clothing security. Jewelry and accessories can often create losses that far exceed that of any other clothing department or product group.
Jewelry is a huge add- on item in retail, or in any small business for that matter. It is also a huge theft item by nature. Jewelry is small. It is easily concealed, and can be quite expensive.
Because of this, jewelry losses sometimes outweigh the profit margins built into these impulse buys. Retail theft devices should always be extended out to protect this high theft item. In fact, I worked for a retailer once that had jewelry losses that exceeded our designer clothing department two to one.
When you start to use Checkpoint labels and Checkpoint tags to protect your jewelry, you shrink losses should diminish dramatically.

Small Problem, Small Solution- Checkpoint Labels

The addition of Checkpoint labels will help reduce a significant amount of losses from the theft of small items of merchandise.  Because they are easy to steal, and frequently have a high dollar value, they make for a prime target for shoplifters.
These items can be found in practically every classification of retailer. Depending on what percentage of your store’s individual shrink comes from small items, it might be beneficial to focus on how to stop shoplifting as part of your retail theft prevention plan.
Checkpoint labels work simultaneously with Checkpoint systems that are already in place. These labels can be applied as a visual deterrent; you can even have the word “alarm” pre- printed on them. They can also be hidden covertly inside of a pocket or a sleeve of a wallet, for example.
Anti shoplifting labels are a great way to incorporate retail theft prevention tools on these small pieces of merchandise. The labels are available in a variety of sizes and shapes, making them a versatile solution for your store. You might even see a decrease in the larger items too. As shoplifters discover that the small items are monitored, they might assume that the larger items will be monitored too.

Employee Detection – Liquor Bottle Security

If you have recently (or ever) had an employee steal from your business, this is for you. You probably spent countless hours trying to make sense of why that employee did what he did. You might have even updated or enhanced your liquor bottle security. In the end, you probably just wanted to know why he stole from you.

The dishonest employee may have given you a reason like financial hardship. Perhaps a spouse lost their job, or the bills just got out of control. They needed a way to supplement. Maybe they have an addiction or substance abuse problem. Whatever their story was, I will bet money that they never said that the reason why they stole was because you made it easy for them to do so.

What? It’s my fault? Hey- I’m the victim here!

Yes, you are the victim and no one should have ever taken advantage of you. However, as a businessperson, why would you not go to great lengths to protect your assets? No matter what the employee’s motives for stealing were, they found a loophole in your system that made it easier to steal than to be caught.

That is a sad reality we have to face. Liquor bottle security needs to go beyond the Alpha Security EASy Bottle Bottle Locks. It needs to be about operational controls, checks and balances, and an environment where the employees know that if they step out of line, they will be detected.

Visit the Loss Prevention Store to purchase EASy Bottle bottle locks by Alpha Security and your Electronic Article Surveillance or EAS system.

Sneaky Pete – Employee Background Checks

Often when we are faced with dishonesty, our first reaction is to sneak around to try and gather as much information as we can. If it is a cheating spouse, we hire private investigators to covertly follow them around. Shoplifters are faced with undercover security personnel. A possible dishonest applicant gets the employee background check.

While it is completely legal to conduct pre-employment screening, there are certain regulations that need to be followed. The biggest thing is complying with the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

As an employer, there are a few points that relate specifically to what and how you can run these employee background checks. In order to protect the consumer, only certain people can have access to someone’s credit report. These people are specifically designated, and an employer is one of the people who have a legitimate need for this access.

However, this does not mean that as an employer you have carte blanche access to anyone’s credit report that you want. To further protect the consumer, they must first give a written consent for you to run their report (no sneaking off and running it without their knowledge).

Once the employee background checks are conducted, the employee has a right to know if they were declined employment based upon the information found within the report. This gives the employee an opportunity to determine the validity of the items reported. If there is an error, the employee has the right to have those items corrected and resubmit the report to the employer (you).

Drill Down the Reports – Clothing Security

I was recently talking to a national company who was incurring losses due to theft at the hands of major organized crime rings. They wanted to know how to reduce the losses and increase their clothing security.

I spoke with them about some of their basic operations to get a better feel for what we could do for them. As it turned out, most of the issues had nothing to do with clothing alarms or clothing security tags. The biggest complications came from their inventory ordering and management.

Their inventory relied heavily on special buys. These were large purchases of designer clothing that were either a second run or otherwise greatly reduced item. Once these items sold out, there was no rebuy of the merchandise. Inventory was taken once a year so it was potentially twelve months before a loss was identified. Needless to say, tracking their losses was a difficult task.

I suggested that they start by drilling down the sales reports. It is there that they would be able to see what was there but also what was not. If they were not selling in a particular area they might be experiencing theft issues, If you don’t have the product to sell, your sales suffer. Next is to evaluate the clothing security on those items and increase their usage accordingly.

Who Wants To Know? – Loss Prevention Seminars

When you attend good a loss prevention seminar, it is hard to know who will walk away with more – you or your employees.

Attending a loss prevention workshop is a good business decision that every manager or owner should make at some point in his or her career. It will provide invaluable knowledge about ways you can reduce your losses. They will also give you a heads up on ways that both shoplifting and employee theft can occur.

I would encourage you to take your complete staff with you so they can benefit from the same loss prevention training that you are getting. It will help their awareness of common losses that can occur in a retail setting.

After the training is completed, you will have an open line of communication with your employees. By discussing some of the things you learned with your employees, they may come to you more openly with concerns they have, or things that they have seen. These might be things like employee theft or shoplifting that they were uncomfortable talking to you about before.

These open lines of communication provide you with additional eyes and ears on the pulse of your business. Some of the best information I have received about losses has come directly from my employees.

Educating Your Customers – Alpha Shark Tag

How do you educate your customers so they know what they can and cannot do when they see the Alpha Shark Tag? The customers won’t have any idea what the tag is designed for. If they do not have any education, you can create customer issues.

Legitimate customers may automatically take the tag off when they get home, not knowing that it needs to stay on. If they later change their mind and return the item, you wouldn’t want a declined return from a customer who honestly had not worn the item.

The easiest solution is to attach a hangtag to the pin that holds the tag to the garment. The Alpha Shark Tag should now have a copy of the store’s return policy and the removal instructions attached to it. If you are looking for examples, Alpha Security has made one to be used.

Now, in addition to the cashier or salesperson verbally explaining the Alpha Shark Tag at the point of purchase, there is a written instruction physically attached to the tag. When used together, there should not be any confusion as to what the tag does, as well as how and when to remove it.

No Harm, No Foul- Wardrobing Retail

Many people underestimate the severity of wardrobing retail. Because the item is paid for and then refunded, the user feels like it is no different than any other refund that is conducted on a normal basis. Except with wardrobing, there is a difference- this time the item was worn before it was returned.
Just like with any form of theft or fraud, there is always a justification of why someone should carry out such an action. In the case of wardrobing, it comes down to the stance of “no harm, no foul”.
Retailer’s are often in a quandary on what to do with these items. Up until now, Nordstrom’s did not have a customer service friendly way to decline these returns.
They were then left with items that had been worn, and ethically could not be sold as new. The garments might have been fine upon the initial glance, but if you turned them inside out, there were often the tell tale signs of use- makeup or deodorant debris, perhaps a not so new smell.
Because there is not a defect, the retailer can’t send it back to the manufacturer for a credit. This leaves the retailer with having to take a massive discount to get the item out of their inventory.
These are the losses that people who are wardrobing retail habitually tend to overlook.
