Grocery Store In Need of A Bottle Lock

A small chain of specialty grocery stores was looking for bottle security. They contacted me and asked about solutions. A manager explained to me that recently, the stores had noticed an increase in theft of liquor. Liquor bottle security was something the stores had not considered in the past.

I went to the store and did a walk of the liquor department. Liquor accounted for a large part of the sales in each store. Walking down the first liquor aisle, I immediately noticed the holes on the shelves. I asked if the store was out of stock. They told me that in order to control the loss of liquor the store would keep the more expensive liquor in the manager’s office and wait for a customer to ask for it. This was no bottle security. I then went on to the next stores and aisles and realized a couple common misconceptions this store had on controlling liquor loss.

The stores need bottle locks. Locking merchandise up in a manager’s office and waiting for the customer to ask for it is not good for sales. I told the manager about Alpha security products that would increase liquor bottle security and allow him to stock the shelves. I explained how a simple bottle lock would prevent customers from “sampling” the merchandise while in the stores, and would deter the would-be thieves. Alpha security gave me a couple of test models to show the managers, and let them see how easy it was to install a bottle lock. I went on to recommend EASy bottle locks and gave them a little information on other retailers that use EASy bottle locks to protect their merchandise.

Over the next several weeks and after installing bottle locks, the stores monitored the liquor department closely. Each saw an increase in sales, one store saw as much as a 15% increase in liquor sales.

Experience Summer Profits with Clothing Security

School is out, summer is here, and people are taking vacations.  They are traveling, maybe taking some time off of work, and may have a little bit of extra free time on their hands.  So that may mean increased customer traffic in your business.  And it could also mean increased loss due to shoplifting.

The more people that come into your business, the more likely that some of them could be shoplifters.  We’d like to have that increase of business so we can be profitable, but at what cost if so much merchandise, especially clothing, is walking out of the door without being paid for?  Clothing security and security tags on clothes can help increase your profits and your in stock during these summer months, while at the same time reducing the loss you experience due to theft.

Clothing security tags are affixed to the clothing that you sell.  They are a visual deterrent to the shoplifter, showing that shoplifter that you are serious about clothing security.  Your employees can also easily remove security tags on clothes when the clothing is purchased, but they are not so easily removed if the thief wants to hide in a corner of your business and try to remove the clothing alarm.  Most won’t even try, and those that do will probably give up.  It is much easier to move on to the next unprotected business that does not have clothing security.

Take advantage of the summer months by actually having merchandise displayed for your customers, instead of empty racks left behind by your shoplifters.  Clothing security can help you out with that by protecting what you have worked hard to be able to display and sell.

Prevent Shoplifting – Change Attitudes?

Part of every retailer’s focus is to prevent shoplifting, which is the literal theft of the business by people who should know better.

What goes through a shoplifter’s mind when he or she makes the decision to steal?

First, the shoplifter has to rationalize the intent.  Is it inconvenient to have to pay for the merchandise?  Is the merchandise too expensive?  The store has so much, they won’t miss this one.  Whatever the shoplifter’s excuse is has no validity to the retailer, because it’s out and out theft to him.

Next, the shoplifter’s attitude has to be such that what he is about to do is OK because of a lax attitude of his peers, or lack of moral education (stealing is wrong, but shoplifting is not so bad).

Finally the threat of being caught has to be considered low or the penalty for being caught is minimal, and the merchandise being stolen (or the act of shoplifting by itself in some cases) has to be perceived as worth the risk.

Realistically, attempting to prevent shoplifting by the retailer can only concentrate on the final factor.  The retailer must increase the risk of being caught, or increase the penalty for the apprehended shoplifter.  He can do very little to nothing about the shoplifter’s rationalization or his attitude.  Those intangibles have to be learned in the home or through other avenues that instill a sense of right and wrong.

There are ways to increase both the chances of catching the shoplifter and to create the perception that apprehension is likely, or at least more likely at one particular store than another.

Some stores post signs warning that shoplifters will be prosecuted, and follow through with the promise when the opportunity arises.

A better alternative is to prevent shoplifting in the first place.

There are various means that retailers can use to reduce shoplifting:  increased staffing, merchandise placement, locking displays, reduced exposure of desirable items, closed circuit television, and audible alarms are common measures.

Ultimately, it’s up to the retailer to decide how far he has to go to prevent shoplifting in his own environment, because attitudes are unlikely to change.

Stop Shoplifting with Checkpoint Systems

Retail anti theft devices like a Checkpoint Security System are a must for a profitable business. We’d all like to think that we can display our merchandise so that it can be shopped by our honest customers, but reality is that we have to be aware of anti shoplifting techniques so our business efforts can be profitable.

There are many options available in the world of retail theft prevention. One of the best and most respected is Checkpoint security systems. Checkpoint tags and Checkpoint labels are affixed to your high theft and high end merchandise so that it is less likely to be stolen. Checkpoint systems offer a visual deterrent to the would-be shoplifter, and can help stop shoplifting in your business just by being there.

Shoplifters do not want attention when they come into your business to steal, so having a Checkpoint security system is a great way to give the shoplifters exactly what they do not want. A thief will see that you have an anti shoplifting system in place and may wonder what other retail anti theft devices you have that he or she cannot see. This may just be motivation enough for the shoplifter to move on to the more vulnerable, unprotected business.

Business owners cannot hide their heads in the sand and pretend that shoplifting is not occurring in their stores. If you are looking into retail theft prevention, you are probably already suffering losses due to theft and shoplifting. Hold your head high and proudly utilize Checkpoint security systems in your business. You’ll stop shoplifting, and see increased profits as a result.

Bottle Locks Stop Loss and Boost Profits

Bottle locks have been around for a few years now. Yet there are many liquor retailers that still prefer to sell their merchandise without any sort of liquor bottle security. Many still believe their customers are not stealing or are not “sampling” the merchandise.

A store manager I had recently spoken with was that sort of manager. He didn’t really believe his customers were stealing merchandise, or tasting what was on the shelf. We talked about his merchandise and more importantly what he thought was causing the loss. Bottle security was the least of his assumptions. He was more certain that the vendor was cheating him, or that the bottles were either damaged or lost during transit versus the customers actually taking them from his store.

I knew exactly what was happening in his store and the shrink numbers were proof of that. All of his beliefs were true, vendors do cause loss, bottles do get damaged during transportation, but even more relevant is shoplifting.  Bottle security and bottle locks certainly would help to stop any sort of customer theft, but the manager would have to be sold on the process of using a bottle lock.

After a more in depth discussion about bottle locks, the store manager was willing to bottle security.

Alpha security is solid provider of bottle security and other products designed to prevent loss from occurring in your stores. As a professional, I make daily recommendations on how stores can better stop loss and proactively prevent loss from occurring. In stores with liquor, there is never any doubt in recommending Alpha security products like EASy bottle tops, and other forms of liquor bottle security.

Here is a tip. If you are a business owner or manager looking to provide a bottle lock in your stores, check out EASy bottle locks from Alpha security. EASy bottle locks, in my opinion, are one of the most effective tools to help deter theft in your stores.

Clothing Security Adds Promise to New Retailer

A new retailer opened the doors to their new location without clothing security. This business was put together well, yet lacked the necessary security tags on clothes it needs to operate in its current location.

Working for this new retailer, my team and I helped them put to together a clothing security program that would help prevent theft from happening in the first place. First, we showed the owners clothing security tags and offered to install them on a limited number of items and test out the product. With them in agreement, we put security tags on clothes and set the merchandise for open sell.

As a two week period went by, the store claimed to have seen little theft occur in the merchandise, yet other areas of the store were hard hit. In fact, the store owner was so impressed with the performance of the clothing security tags, he placed an order with the vendor that very day.

As time went on, I monitored the progress of this retailer. I looked at the clothing security of other comparable sellers in the area and only a few could match the clothing security tags program this store had. One other retailer did stand out, as they were using a clothing alarm to protect their garments. I really think the clothing alarm is a cool feature. To this day, I get a laugh when I remember the look on the face of the first shoplifter attempting to remove the clothing alarm… the surprised look when the alarm activated.

It has been a couple of years now, this retailer has opened 2 more stores and is continuing with their success and they agree that clothing security tags helped boost their profits and keep them in the black.

Prevent Shoplifting with Customer Service

Those in business are able to prevent shoplifting in order to be profitable. Retailers lose billions every year to theft, by both their customers and their employees. You as the business owner do have options to stop some of that potential profit that is walking out of your door.

One excellent way to prevent shoplifting is by simply providing excellent customer service, and teaching your employees to do the same thing. Employees learn by example, so if your management team in engaged in great customer service, your employees will follow suit. Explain to your new employees the importance of customer service and its value towards being able to prevent shoplifting.

For example, shoplifters that come into your business do not want attention. They want to be able to come in, take what they want, and leave without drawing attention to themselves. Teach your employees to approach customers in their areas, and ask them if they are finding everything. A simple gesture such as that can go far to stop the losses that your store is experiencing.

Employees should also be taught to notice customers while they are working. If your employees are working with their heads down and never looking up from their work, the customers and shoplifters will be walking by unnoticed. Not only are your honest customers being neglected, the shoplifters now have an environment in which to thrive.

If building your business and building profit is your dream, make it a reality and prevent shoplifting to reduce loss.

Employee Theft Surprises Everyone

The true costs of employee theft may never really be known. However, in the retail world, employee theft can be prevented with the right loss prevention awareness program.

A small chain of stores that I oversee as a corporate fraud investigator recently went through an annual inventory process. The shrink numbers coming back showed obvious signs of internal theft. I went to each store to gather more information and to start an employee theft investigation. At the first store, I looked at all available exception reports, narrowing down issues that occurred on the registers. I reviewed hours of footage on CCTV and built a case file. Looking at schedules of all employees, I started eliminating the least likely. After, I compiled all associates I felt may be involved or have knowledge of internal theft.

This employee theft investigation exposed 5 different employees at one location. As my investigation continued, I interviewed each employee, asking questions of a general nature. The first employee admitted to theft and implicated other employees he knew were involved with internal theft. This employee also told me of a manager that was the ring leader in a big portion of this theft. I continued with the employee theft investigation, gather admission statements, witness statements and finalized the cases. Once all was said and done, I took the results of my employee theft investigation to the owners.

Employee theft was something no one at this company wanted to acknowledge. Employees at these stores were “honest”, and paid well… so according to the owners, these employees would have no reason to steal. Being the corporate fraud investigator, I showed them the results of the cases. They could not believe what the employees had been involved with. In fact, they were so surprised; they closed one store for 24 hours to speak with all associates about what had happened.

An Anti Shoplifting Mindset Can’t Hurt

Anti shoplifting efforts  aren’t on most retailers minds as they plan how they are going to arrange, display, and present their merchandise in the most inviting way they can to increase sales.  They are only forced to think about it when their shrink figures –the difference between book inventory and physical inventory – has become so large that it threatens the business’s profitability.  Then the reaction, after they realize that you can’t waterboard a shoplifter, is to take every anti shoplifting measure possible to drive the thieves away.

Awareness on the part of each employee is the first step of the anti shoplifting scenario.  The idea that there are shoplifters stealing the business has to become part of everyone’s daily thought.  This comes through training, training, and constant reinforcement of ways to control shoplifting.

Without going overboard, an EAS system by Checkpoint Security Systems goes a long way toward easing the mind of a retailer whose shoplifting problems have gone beyond the annoyance stage.  Checkpoint Systems has designed a device that uses RF (Radio Frequency) to detect merchandise that has Checkpoint security labels and Checkpoint tags attached as it passes out the door.

Either genuine Checkpoint security tags or Checkpoint labels will protect high-risk merchandise that is susceptible to loss because it is popular, expensive, or pilferable.  Checkpoint tags are attached to the merchandise by a pin that can only be removed with a detacher that is available at the point of sale.  The Checkpoint security tags are reusable and can be used over and over.  They cannot be easily removed without the detacher.

The Checkpoint labels are adhesive and used by attaching them to the merchandise or concealing them in the merchandise packaging.  When the merchandise with Checkpoint tags or labels attached passes near the Checkpoint Systems antenna, the antenna detects the device and emits an alarm, alerting the staff to address the situation.

A Checkpoint Security System deters shoplifters by its presence since shoplifters know the risk of detection goes up considerably with the presence of merchandise that is protected by Checkpoint security tags and Checkpoint labels.  The use of a Checkpoint Security Systems also reinforces the anti shoplifting mindset that retailers want to encourage in their stores.

Lazy Shoplifters and Bottle Locks

Why do bottle locks cause lazy shoplifters to leave one liquor and wine store empty handed and go to an easier target to steal?

Shoplifters are inherently lazy.  They had rather steal merchandise than work for the money to buy it.  If they are not lazy, at least they tend to take the easiest route in order to get their “free” stuff.  So is the goal of the retailer to stop shoplifting altogether, or to help the shoplifter go somewhere else to commit his crimes.  The most efficient way for the retailer to fight the shoplifter war is to “uninvited” him from the store and to visit a competitor.

Bottle locks are a great deterrent to any shoplifter, especially the lazy ones.  These are designed by their manufacturer, Alpha Security, to prevent shoplifting on several fronts.

The first bottle lock, EASy Bottle, makes the product unusable to a thief by preventing the bottle from being opened.  This type of bottle security denies the benefit of the contents of the bottle because the bottle can only be opened by breaking it.  The cap is held on tightly by the Easy Bottle bottle security.  An employee can only open the bottle lock with a key that cannot be duplicated.  Removing the contents from a broken bottle is work a shoplifter had rather not do.  This type of liquor bottle security also contains a detection device that can be sensed by an EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance) System at the exit.  The EAS System will emit an audible alarm as the bottle lack passes through the field.  Shoplifters recognize this and because they want to avoid detection, they proceed to an easier target retailer.

The steel grip liquor bottle security by Alpha Security fits tightly around the neck of the bottle and contains the detection device that will alert the sensors, and has a different look from the EASy bottle locks and lacks the product denial feature, but is an effective deterrent as well.

Using bottle locks will force your lazy shoplifters to exercise – by walking past your store to an easier theft target.
