In the retail clothing industry, it is not unusual to see product groups split down into macro and micro adjacencies. You might have a men’s department split in to four or five other mini departments. Even in small specialty stores or boutiques, macros and micros exist.

Anti shoplifting programs can save the day

Anti shoplifting programs are put in place to ensure that company’s assets are well protected. During my career I have been asked to help a few retail stores improve their Retail theft prevention program. These retail store’s shrink numbers were very high, so they needed a way to fix their problem. Once I looked over the store problem I uncovered that the stores were more of a haven to shoplifters than to customers. It Can Happen Anywhere

Coming from the world of retail loss prevention, I always knew the importance of running background checks, performed by background check experts at a background check company. It is one of the safe guards to hiring reliable, trust worthy employees. Employee background checks is the key to validating a potential employee’s resume or job application.

Recently, I realized that background checks and pre employment screening, when you utilize proper background check experts at a background check company, is something that all companies or employers should do. I unfortunately came to this discovery only after hearing a story from my mother.

She called one day just to chat and started to tell me of some local excitement. The church she attends had to fire one of their secretaries about a week ago. I knew it must be pretty bad if you are terminated from a church. I was right.

The employee, who should have had criminal background checks performed,  had been secretly writing checks to herself for the better part of a year. She was coding them as invoices for other miscellaneous work to be done on the church grounds.

This employee had a great track record of attendance and was well liked. She had gotten sick and was unexpectedly out of the office for a week. When another employee started to reconcile the books, the employee background checks that had been cashed showed up. After an investigation was conducted, the scope of loss totaled around a thousand dollars. She was promptly terminated as a result.

While pre employment screening may not have caught this employee, running a routine background check periodically would have shown her financial troubles. I recently read an article that had stories very similar to this. It’s more common than you think. If it can happen at a church, it can definitely happen anywhere.

While employed as an agent for a department store, one issue that we never stopped confronting was fitting room theft. It might be assumed that the amount of shoplifting that occurs in this location would probably be similar, if not equal, to the restroom because both places offer privacy. However, carrying an armful of clothing into a designated area for trying on apparel isn’t devious at all, whereas smuggling merchandise into a lavatory should raise some red flags.

The corporation I worked for expected fitting room attendants to count the merchandise going into the room and coming out and verifying that there were security tags on clothes. Coupons and Internal Theft

By now we have all heard of extreme couponing. It is where consumers go into a store with binders full of coupons and try to get out of the register by paying little to no money at all for items.

Overall, it’s really not a bad idea. Everyone wants to save a buck, and manufacturers are making it easier than ever before to get coupons. You can find them in newspapers, on line and off of social media sites. Who would think that it could ever lead to an employee theft investigation?

The key to proper couponing is to know your companies policies and to read the coupon’s restrictions. If a coupon says it can only be used for one item, employees shouldn’t take four coupons for that one item. If it says the customer has to buy two items, do the math, they must buy two.

In a recent employee theft investigation my employees were taking it a step further. They would take a coupon for an item with a big dollar off. They would then buy that item. Actually, what they did, was to buy a trial size of that item, which was against the coupons restrictions. Hence becoming internal theft.

They would then cash out the difference for the dollar amount, thus making money. A few ways this was costing us:

 

  1. Coupons do not have a value. No one should make money off of it.
  2. Because the coupon was used incorrectly, the vendors were not paying us back for the coupon.
  3. The shelves were now empty of these items. Causing customer complaints and a lack of sales.

Long story short, coupons- good. Employee theft– bad.

Take some time to make sure your employees are aware of the correct and incorrect coupon policies. Or else you might end up with some employee theft. You might just save yourself the trouble of an employee theft investigation.

You Are Not Immune

Retailers across the world all have one thing in common. Theft. No one is immune. Clothing stores all have shoplifters. Clothing stores all have employee theft. It doesn’t matter if you are a high-end retailer, or middle market, or even a discount dollar store. Each and every one has at some point suffered a shrink loss due to deliberate theft.

So what do you do? You can’t lock everything away! While that thought has crossed most loss prevention and store managers at some point, it just really isn’t a feasible form of clothing security.
